Elden Ring is set in a dark fantasy world called the "Lands Between." The world was created by the Elden Ring, a powerful object that has been shattered, leading to chaos and turmoil. In that scene, Marika was stepping into the Erdtree. The opening looks the same. The Erdtree has a lining of gold around it. The Ertree roots always have bodies embedded in them. The Erdtree is made up of bodies, possibly from the war in the land of shadows. The bodies are concealed with Marika's gold.
Wouldnt it be so cool if we beat the dlc and the erdtree just turns into a pile of corpse!
Heres my lore theory. The betrayal is Marika betraying the previous god of the world. Seduction and then killing it in its moment of weakness to consume the essence of the elden ring to be come the next god. And Messmer could be an amalgamation type of character. Perhaps he's made from the union between Marika and this god and is also influenced by the creation of Radagon during Marika's ascension. And from a union of two gods, Messmer becomes basically the ...anti-thesis of the coming age. Able to use fire, associated with serpents.
I really think this theory! I know everything we're told about Messmer is evil, but ive just got this gut feeling theres so much more to him!
This is my thought as well! My tinfoil add ons are that the previous god/lord was the gloam eyed queen... and Marika used Radagon to seduce them and birth Messmer - main reason being the very draconic/snake like appearance of godskins (related to GEQ), also his fire and the impaling he does is very death-like.. (plus red hair)... Also used this union to create the mending rune in the GEQ, like Fia, before Marika took it (after using Maliketh and sealing death) to create the golden order

I'm starting to think Miquella only exists in spirit form now. My best guess is they divested of their flesh completely. The haligtree may have naturally tried to regrow him, but he didn't care whether Mogh took his flesh or not. Saying the body in the cocoon is related to Miquella but not Miquella really bugs me. It would make sense if miquella became a god, given the surname "the kind." Marika is The Eternal. This could mean messmer was an empyrean and is a god as well.
Not saying you are wrong in your assumptions, but i disagree with the "title equals godhood" thought. In the lands between every self acclaimed lord and their mother (pun intended) has a title: Godrick the golden; Radahn the starscourge; Malenia the blade of Miquella; Ranni the witch; Soldier of Rick the god etc. The titels in my oppinion are more kinda like a surname.

Well godrick is a bitch pretending to be something. Doesn't ranni technically rise to god hood with her ending? Otherwise, I don't remember radahn being referred to as the starscourge. There's also no the in Malenias name either, and she becomes a goddess in the 2nd phase of her fight.

With the Dancing Dragon type thing, it got me thinking...
Tanith was a dancer from a far away land. Maybe she came to the Lands Between knowing what Marika had done to her home, and she wanted to create an uprising of Recusant Fingers to take back what Marika stole from the Land of Shadow.
When you look at Rykard with all the hands poking out (also the Blasphemous Blade), it looks like all the arms and hands we see poking out of the split tree in this trailer right?

Yeah, I know previous From games have mentioned characters who come from lands we never visit, but Patches gives us the Castanets to give to her... For what? I believe it's a nod to something more because it would be a useless item otherwise, despite Patches being a troll.
During the Lord of Blasphemy half of the Rykard fight, all manner of visceral arms and hands protrude from him like we see in the split tree. They're also on the Blasphemous Blade itself... I think Volcano Manor has strong connections to what's going on

my guess is that golden/red hair and masculine body depict radagon being born as marika was ascending to godhood. perhaps greater will knew marika couldn’t be trusted and created radagon to keep her under control.

Saw a few others fighting that no way it was radagon but I think it is but he still has Marikas hair color ( doesn't he get cursed later for it to turn red? )

I think when the narrator says that Miquella abandoned her fate when showing st. trina, tells how all emperyans are fated to transition to a different identity. This makes more sense when you consider that Ranni wanted to rid herself of her emperyan flesh in order to rid herself of this fact. This can also explain the relationship between Marika and Radagon. Perhaps Marika was transitioning to Radagon until she was trapped in the erdtree and also why we fight radagon and not marika. Milicent also mentions how she removed the golden needle in order to kill herself in order to prevent herself from blooming into a rot valkyrie. We also see Malenia go through this transition into the rot goddess. So Maybe when miquella divested himself of his flesh, he also prevented himself from fully transitioning into st. trina

You're totally right! This was what I was trying to say in the video, but what you've just said imo has confirmed it
Okay, Marika, I had not thought about. My thought was the blond person was Godwyn the Golden. Miquella is often referenced to be distraught about Godwyn's murder, him becoming the Prince of Death and not finding proper rest. He is buried at the roots of the Erdtree where many corpses are lying but he is still bound to the Tree and the living world. Hence the mountains of corpses around the figure in the trailer and him holding to the strains of gold.
We know Marika has 5 children that are referenced in the Lands Between. Two sets of twins and Godwyn. What if Messmer is the twin to Godwyn and purged from history? It would be an explanation for his question to the mother. The favorite twin has fallen and he mocks Marika for it, because Messmer is still there and fighting while the golden child has lost his status.

The shape of the golden doorway Marika stands in front of looks exactly like the enteance to the Erdtree. Im thinking the pillars of bodies is actually the trunk of the Erdtree and its showing visually how it was born from mass sacrifice.

I think the narrator saying that Miquella divested himself of his fate while showing St Trina could mean that St Trina was what Miquella was supposed to become (like how Malennia was supposed to become the Goddess of Rot).
This could mean that Miquella’s outergod might be a god/goddess of sleep

Or it could equally mean that becoming a whole new person (St. Trina) was his method of abandoning his fate. As we know where Miquella's withered body is, we still haven't seen St. Trina in person, my theory is that he already became her when he was in the cocoon.

Something I'm wondering is:
1. Shadows Lands is the place Marika first set foot in.
2. Messmer seems to have always been in the shadowlands for ages.
3. Reason why some of Marikas children have red hair was because of Radagon.
4. So does that mean Radagon already existed in the shadowlands?
5. Since Mesmer has red hair?
6. But since Radagon first appeared in the Liurnian War, long after marika's entry in the shadowlands.
7. So if Mesmer existed before Radagons inception ( Liurnian War )
8. How did Mesmer get red hair if it's not from Radagon?

I also believe that Messmer is there eradicating any force that opposes the Erdtree and is helping his mother get rid of anything that has to do with the Crucible.

This theory is a lot more believable than anything pointing at him being against Marika or being banished for “blasphemy”.
I'm gonna discard this theory completely because that would make him just another Morgott which would be boring. They have much better writers than that and they wouldn't just redo a story that was already done in the main game as the main plot for DLC.

Here’s my prediction on Messmer. Beholding to the whole light and dark theme; Marika stole the grace from the womb to create the Erdtree. Thus leading to whatever was held within to be born devoid. In turn creating Messmer, who in his Blasphemy, seems to be a literal Shadow Of The Erdtree…

That fleshy opening has the same shape as the gate of the Erdtree where you fight Radagon.
On the guy on the portrait…who’s to say that guy in the portrait isn’t just a previous husband of Marika? Correct me if I am wrong but I don’t recall hearing Godfrey was actually her first husband. Just the first Elden Lord.

We *know* that what is now known as the Land of Shadow used to be physically a part of what is known as the Lands Between from a Miyazaki interview. He said that we will get to know how those two lands became separated in the DLC.
I believe we see the separation event in the beginning if this trailer. The great purge that couldn’t be put to song is sure to take place after the separation and that is the reason why we don’t hear about it in the base game.
What remains of the Land of Shadows now in the Lands Between might just be stories of distant land and foreign kingdoms, such as the place that the Numen, Tanith or house Marais are said to be from.

5:50 I think someone made an astute observation that the corpses are actually skinned, and that this is then the Godskin Hunt, which would explain the Cocoon being the Gloam Eyed Queen - I believe in fact that the "cocoon" at 1:34 is coated in a fabric that is the same pale colour as the Godskin Robes. Its why Marika was so merciless against the enemies, even at 9:39 there's a Godskin-esque spiraling spear being held by a woman. There can be no doubt that this area is related to the gloam eyed queen.

My schizo crazy theory about the actual LAND of shadow is that the land of shadow is the actual link to the deeproot depths and the giant branches;
- Godwyn dies beneath the erdtree, no visual effects on the actual erdtree yet the other tree looks as if it's being strangled by death blight.
- The siofra river map looks unfinished, the primary area beneath the massive cloud which is speculated to be where the DLC could take place.
- It's also speculated that getting into the DLC will be from the hand crushing you and killing you, which would imply that death takes you to the shadow realm. To get to the deeproot depths you have to go through a coffin, which is obviously synonymous with death.
Only issue with that theory is that you can get to the deeproot depths through the frenzied flame prescription area, but it feels like there's too many similarities for it not to be atleast a little significant.
I love these theories! Maybe considering so many died in the frenzied flame area that acts as a substitute? A permanent portal if you will? Something that I’ve been thinking is maybe that thing at the start is mass sacrifice for something, if death plays an important part like you think… then that adds a lot more credibility! The overall theme from the trailer definitely borrows alot from the dark souls series. In it, the corpses and souls(wills) became the very bedrock of the world itself.(Dregs)
We've seen that from elden ring with the crucible story, with all forms life being burned to create the erdtree, the God and root of life in the current lands between.
The trailer truly reminds me of the crucible, but I don't think it is the crucible itself. But it does seem like the trailer was a war to sacrifice the city to the erdtree, in a way to make the new age like you mentioned.

Great vid bro! I'm 1k thousand percent Hyped for Shadow of the Erdtree! I think in the Shadow realm, we'll follow in Miquella's steps and instead of sites of grace, there's going to be Miquella's great rune and that's where we'll encounter the new leveling system Miyazaki was talking about in his interviews.

I'm not much of a lore guy but, now that you say that Rykard was at one point in the lands of shadow, it makes me wonder if that happened before the business with the snake or if he actually fed himself to the snake in order to die and/or defile the gold/grace out of himself, like Miquella supposedly did with the cocoon, thus gaining a way to the lands of shadow.
I hadn’t thought of this, but I now you’ve mentioned it, I’m in love with this theory!!!!! I think imo this is the most likely answer!
There's also the fact that Marika's HALF-BROTHER, Maliketh, is half-beast. In one of Miyazaki interview, he said that we will learn more about a ''beast civilisation'' that was here prior to the Erdtree. So I'm pretty sure we will have some infos about Maliketh father, or mother.
Unfortunately I only found this out about a week ago, but that’s actually a mistranslation, In Japanese it translates to “sworn brother” :(

I kinda feel like this trailer points at Miquella/Melania being born much earlier than the main game seems to suggest. It seems highly unlikely that Miquella would know about what happened in the lands of shadow unless he lived through it, with how closely kept a secret the whole incident seems to be.
My current crazy fringe theory now is that Miquella and Melania might not be twins! If Melania was anything like her buds before the blue swordsman helped her keep the scarlet rot in check, it would've been extremely easy for someone like Miquella to convince her of such at a young age, essentially making it a guarantee that Melania would be loyal only to him, seeing him as both the person trying to cure her, as well as he beloved twin brother.
I have zero proof that this is the case, but something about their relationship paralleled with Gowry's own relationship with Millicent and his other "daughters" makes me think it's a possibility. Hell, Gowry himself sends us after Miquella's needle if I recall correctly, and even seems to have the know-how to repair it. Feels like too much of a coincidence.

Just an observation, the soldiers of Messmer seem to be heavily inspired by Roman soldiers, mostly a mixture of their gear troughout the ages. Heart plates of early republic, mail shirts of late republic and helmets of the late empire. Overall marching with spears also just gives organized war machine vibes.

Marika is holding the veil in the sky in the Land of Shadow, I think it's not the Elden Ring. Marika's shadow is Maliketh, they were raised together as siblings. Radagon supposedly only appeared after the war against the Fire Giants but who knows maybe he does have something to do with Land of Shadow and Messmer. After all, Messmer has red hair like Radagon. What I most liked about your points is the bracelet in Marika's arm symbolizing a snake meaning Marika has some connection to snakes. Cause Messmer is connected to snakes and the snakes are associated to sin and sin is associated to the burning of the Erdtree.

It is generally agreed upon in the community that Marika was a Numen and that she did not always possess godhood. If I am not mistaken, Miyazaki mentioned in an interview that the Erdtree was created in the Lands of the Shadows, so it is not too far-fetched to assume that what you see in the beginning is Marika creating the Erdtree and becoming a god. This is also supported if you examine the beginning with all the flesh; it can almost resemble the roots of bodies, and we now know that the roots of the Erdtree are, in fact, made out of bodies.

I think that Marika tried to grasp power through various means in that land before the elden beast meteor struck the ground. that is through various affairs with powerful people. But when she discovered the elden meteor and got the elden ring, she created a new land and hid the lands she came from so that none would find anything about her past. Messemer is her child from one of the affairs she had with powerful people in the shadow land.

I love that ritual scene of Marika holding those hairs, is lile the massive ritual of becoming a god and at the samd time looks like the massive incantation of Marikas veil being created, the fabric of reality being bent, and she needed lots of bodies for that, maybe Mesmer proccured those bodies for her

In terms of who Messmer's father I actually think its very possible its a fire giant. We know there are or were fire giants in the land of shadow due to ones face being on a messmers giant baskets of fire in the gameplay trailer. This could also go a long way to explain how messmers is gifted with his unique fire.
It could be that 1. This is a more ancient form of fire incantations or 2. The combination of Marika's and this fire giant's genes resulted in Messmer being born with this flame from birth.
This is the second time I’ve seen this thrown around, and I honestly love it, it makes ALOT of sense! Could also explain why Marika eventually set her sights on the fire giants!!
My theory is that Marika was once married in an era of blood, death, and chaos until the Elden Beast’s recruitment which lead to her first betrayal. At this point she may already have children of her own and my theory points to Melina and Messmer (Death and Fire - hence the smoldering butterfly symbolising them both as Empyreans). Here onwards Marika would then be romantically involved with Godfrey (the seduction) that sired Godwyn following the war to defeat the Gloam Eyed Queen, eradicating the Godskins, and the horned beings, thereby as shown in the first scene where Marika finally establishing the first of many golden “Order” before traversing into the Lands Between, leaving Messmer behind to “clean up” the remaining threats
Note: i look at lineage with Marika more than hair colour as tat seem more reliable in terms of influence and relevance to the story (Melina, Malenia, and Miquella have diff hair colour but are empyreans)
Calling it now. The "Shadow" referred to at the beginning of the trailer is the Gloam-Eyed Queen. Those corpses around her all look to have been skinned.

You did not mention the scene with messmer and the bodies "impaled" in the background, you can see 3 of the Lion Dancers impaled on the poles.. you can also see the arms and legs of the puppet master.

What if the one who Marika seduced is Placidusax and Messmer is the product of that affair?
As you said at the end the land of shadow was part of the Lands Between before the Erdtree, so during the age of the Crucible. It's proven by the large amount of characters having horns (the lion puppets, the big bear spell, the image dropped a few days ago). Also, in the first trailer our character is able to cast the flying move belonging to the Crucible knights.
We know Placidusax was the elden lord before the Erdtree, most likely during the Crucible Age.
We know dragons were able to assume human form and I can see Marika "seducing" (as stated in the trailer) the lord of the moment and then "betray" him and his people with his own son, who by the way has also draconic eyes.

Why Messmer cannot be Marika's brother? We know that she has a father, with whom she was close, she has his hummer, so there was mother too, and i think it is Formless Mother, which was close to Messmer. The war in trailer, that cannot be in songs - the war for power and control GreatTree of Shadowlands, where Marika lost, and run in Lands between. Messmer have power of blood, fire and snakes, all that Marika stated as enemy symbols and blasphemy in Lands between. Hair color may not be the same, because Mikella and Malenia are twins and have differend hair color, the same can be to Marika and Messmer. And the general - Marika showed up in Lands between from Lands of numen, and after that she met Hoara Lux, bourn all known her childrens. In Lands between any mention of Messmer, such powerful son and demigod, simply non exist. So if she contacted with Messmer, it was before her existing in Lands between. And if Messmer her son, he bourned before she became god of Golden order in Shadowlands, and why she leave motherland and her child then? It seems not likely. But if Messmer her rival brother and she lost war for power in Shadowlands, ithink it explain almost everything

I wonder if the Shadowlands was the original destination for the First Tarnished. It was never found bc of the veils and they ended up in the Badlands 🤔 I don’t think Marika was ever planning on rectifying the Shadowlands, she wanted to imprison Mesmer, the Tarnished, and everything else within in an Eternal War until all was self-consumed. Marika loves slinging out curses like it’s loose change so this wouldn’t be unusual for her. It seems all her effort into hiding her past, maintaining her new order, and trying to defy the Greater Will has been her undoing, I can’t wait to play this!
I think that after this trailer, the Gloam-Eyed Queen is actually Marika.

The seduction/betrayal/affair could also have a more nuanced meaning as well - as in the Blackflame Monk items describe them as Fire Monks unable to resist the seduction and taboo of the black flame (GEQ). We know Marika is/was a Numen of the Eternal City - perhaps she was seduced by the promise of power and the dazzle of gold, took it on in a form of comingling with the Elden Beast seed, ultimately betraying her own people even to the point of banishing/sealing them underground after usurping their Numen Lord of Night Dark Moon who guided the stars. The forbidden shadow inside, well that she could not fully rid herself of even after removing it from the Ring itself. Those traits passed down to some of her children in the form of a Gloam Eye, a Dark Moon and Sleep. Sealing that shadow affected the children born with those traits. Melina burned and her eye sealed, Ranni rebelling, Miquella losing Trina. Those gloam touched children all ended up bodiless, ridding themselves of Marika in varying degrees. She betrayed her people, herself and ultimately her own children such was her lust for power. Her sin.

My two crazy takes:
1) Marika is the deathbed companion of that crusty old Elden Ring Rune guy from which the elden ring is being taken. Messmer, their child.
2) Marika seduced Placidusax and got Messmer as a byproduct.
Hope neither is true as I cannot wait to be surprised by the story.

Here's my theory. I think it's Marika at the beginning, removing the grace of the gold from Messemer as a baby. Messemer's father is the old man from the original trailer who tries to pull the sword out of himself. I think once Messemer grew up, he wanted to wage a war against his mother which is what we see in the story trailer.

Messmer may be the misgotten son of a literal affair that was needed for Marika to gain her power, but he was sealed in the realm of shadow to erase this sin from history and not sully the golden order, as well the horrible war and possible mass sacrifice.
Miquella may have needed to relinquished his body to even enter that world, to go on a path of atonement for her wrongs. Perhaps the demigod offspring of Marika are physically unable to enter otherwise?? Speculation.
Maybe he can also save Godwyn in this way, but there may not even be a way to revive Godwyn at this point. So all he can do is honor his memory

@@theemeraldgecko310 I'm not completely on board the triplet theory myself, but we really don't know when Radagon came into the picture. Therefore, we have no idea exactly when the children of Radagon and Marika were born. I don't see how Messmer's unseen war following Marika's affair of gold proves anything regarding what else happened in between those events. Also, we don't know who Messmer's parents are for sure, but if Radagon turns out to be his father, then it is possible that Miquella and Malenia were born around the same time as Messmer. Neither the proximity of scenes in the story trailer nor the omission of certain characters from it disproves the theory.
For a while now, I've suspected that Marika somehow got the elden ring from the previous god before her... We know the previous god had left or disappeared, leaving behind their lord (who is a dragon). And looking at Messmer and his dragon communion connections made me think...
So my new theory is Marika seduced the previous god by using Radagon which creates Messmer. She then betrays the god somehow, stealing its power for herself. Thus attaining the elden ring and godhood.
I think Marika is opening a portal, in the new trailer, when she's holding those kind of threats in her hands.
The sky left and right (the sky right of the portal can't be seen in every example of the trailer i've seen so far) on the outside is kinda gloomy, while it looks golden where Marika is standing.
This could be a portal to the lands between or the realm that exists in the Erdtree itself.
Could definitely see this being the case! Only problem is there’s an impact shockwave and the elden beast theme, I really do think this is the start of the golden order! But I also do like this theory!

Malenia/Miquella are said to be born after radagon left Rennala to my knowledge being the youngest known demi-gods, imo the timeline is too far apart for Messmer to be apart of the trio
