    • @morganlee2806
      @morganlee2806 7 місяців тому +3

      What prevented the trick from working on the hot dog guy and why it worked on the jewelry store guy seems fairly simple to me: one guy was actually listening intently and the other wasn't.
      It's a big part of the job for a clerk at a high end jewelry store to be well spoken and attentive to their upscale customers. It's ass kissing, really. Thereby, with a mindset like that, they'd be a lot easier to get sucked into something like this.
      The hot dog vendor just flat out didn't give a shit what he was talking about and was only focused on the money. He didn't get sucked into the conversation so he couldn't be fooled.

    • @NarratingFox
      @NarratingFox 8 років тому +55

      Kehozer Well put in a different way, most tools you can find at a hardware store are diamond tipped, as diamond is the sharpest material in the world (I think).
      Diamonds can actually be made by compressing carbon material with heat, which is insanely common. This process is getting cheaper and cheaper as more efficient ways of generating heat are found.
      The reason jewelry with diamonds cost so much is that manufacturers limit how many get shipped out to affiliated companies so they can shove the prices up. In reality, they likely have mountains of them waiting.
      It's also why if you try returning a ring, you get offered so much less than what you initially paid for.

    imo, the "just take it it's fine" phrase is NOT the key to convincing merchants to accept blank paper as money. it's only the trigger. there's obviously a tremendous amount of prep work that derren doesn't disclose in these videos that goes into making these situations pay off. this prep work is the key. because he doesn't disclose it, that's why so many people are skeptical that such simple tactics would work in real life. if you tried simply what's disclosed in this video to pay for stuff in philly (i.e., saying "just take it it's fine" a few times and handing someone blank paper), you'll get punched in the face 999,999 times out of a million.
    derren undoubtedly had a team prep the jeweler through dozens of subliminal messages over a course of many hours prior to his visit to the store. once derren's team had subconsciously primed the jeweler to accept the blank paper as money upon hearing certain "trigger" words, this is where this video STARTS.

      @SuperiorityQomplex 8 років тому +69

      +smartknowledgeu Not really. It's just conversational hypnosis. You really don't need to prep someone at all. Just a bit of confusion to distract the conscious, a command of 'take it' to the subconscious, and off you go. If he did more prep time, the person wouldn't come out of the trance so fast after he left.
      But ya, there have actually been hypnosis robberies caught on camera and they do similar techniques. Distract the conscious, command the subconscious, be calm and casual so as not to reawaken any suspicion and off you go...

    • @DaveDexterMusic
      @DaveDexterMusic 8 років тому +21

      +smartknowledgeu I doubt your claim of "undoubtably." Clearly "just take it" isn't the key, just as moving my hands on a guitar is not the key to playing it. The key is Derren's years of experience and making it look, for the most part, effortless. I don't watch a video of Brian May or whoever and think "X is the key to his playing", I think "so he spent thousands of hours to be able to do this."

    So what happens here is: He basically thinks for them because of the confine work space they are in. When they're in their workspace, they aren't surprised of their surroundings, making them not as perceptive as they would be if they were working in a Hot Dog stand, and no. The reason it didn't work for Darren is not because he thought he thinks he would be 'mugged', but it is because he is aware of his surroundings- especially because he is outside in the open; in public, and every gesture used would add up for him.
    So he has figured out which people to target, and so he does. He enters the Jewelry shop to buy the ring. He asks the price and Derren shows him the wallet. I don't know what type of wallet design he specifically used, but it must be a wallet that defines the persona Derren is trying to put on. Derren shows him his wallet, the shopkeeper looks away to avoid any awkward eye contact with the wallet, and the money in the wallet. As soon as Derren pulls the money out, whether it be plain paper or just the actual money to pay for the ring in general. Derren distracts him as uses his 'keywords', where your conscious decides its conversational, like a tone, and you just go along with it...like music sort of. However, whilst your conscious is at work, your sub-conscious is doing something completely different. The keywords Derren used are imprinted in your subconscious. And however these words are structured around the original conversation, impact the decisions made on your brain. Or at least it distracts you and makes you perceptive of everything else except the money Derren decided to give you.
    That's my theory about this and it makes sense to me. I'm not really educated in this whole 'how your mind works' kinda thing, I just take anything I can pick up from

    After having read some his books and watched every show there is to watch, i have to say, I can almost understand what parts he keeps 'hidden' from us viewers. Such as the parts where he gets those people to register in their minds phrases like 'take it it's fine and subway stations'. We never see the entire conversation he has with them, which can last somewhere between 2 to 10 minutes. So the trick he does is to register those words while flipping his wallet infront of their eyes, so they can register in their minds that a)he has a wallet full of money b)he is going to pay cash. Of course he picked those guys after an extended investigation from a partner or many partners of him Before his appearance. Maybe those people helped register the words in their minds. In case you are foolish enough to believe that the second one failed, keep in mind that the first rule in a Trick is to make the audience believe you. So in other words he stood no chance with the hot dog stand and he knew it, but threw it in the show as an extra for YOU to believe that he is actually 'trying'. So that you will want him to succeed. And he does after carefully 'hypnotizing' his 'victims' PRIOR to the meeting (maybe even days or months before) in order for him to go and make the final step of the trick. Every trick takes preperation, and the most complex ones take a good amount of preperation, such as learning your 'victim', having ready made blank money notes, and so on.. Derren is Smart, but he finds people to fool of a certain 'brain state' (i don't want to use the word dumb). Anyone who had watched his shows knows that. A smart/alerted 'victim' is no good for him. So, in other worlds he is a very good methodical manipulator of less alerted/smart people. Fun fact : The wallet at the end is empty, meaning that he KNEW exactly how much he was going to pay. ;)

      "My fence is not 6.2 feet high" - An example he explains when training regular people to pull off a similar stunt in an old special on channel 4. It is about interrupting a thought pattern to confuse, by saying something you have to think about to understand, as you end up thinking "what does that have to do with anything?" or "What do you mean?", and therefore force someone to stop what they were thinking. So that phrase was extremely carefully chosen.

    I believe the reason it did not work on the guy selling the hot dog was because he relies so much on all the small transactions during the day to make his living. He has no interest in customer service. He serves a greasy hot dog and cherishes every penny he is paid. People working in fine establishments assume customers are able to pay, especially walking in wearing a nice suit. They focus more on customer service and the money is only a minor part in the transaction of selling.

      From what I understand of his tricks he basically got the vendors to take the blank paper as money by doing a few things. Firstly as soon as a price was decided the focus on the money was taken away, he asked questions about the city and the vendors which obviously took their train of thought elsewhere. The second thing he did was (like you said) subconsciously tell the vendors to take the money, and he did this by saying the phrase take it in a rather powerful and repetitive way. The last thing that I found interesting was on the last vendor who sold him the ring for $4500, he used the phrase "I've been thinking the wrong way'. This suggests to me that he was almost trying to completely rearrange the vendor's ideas about what was valid money and what wasn't.

      And also touching helps... usually the hands, arms, or head work, but depends on the user. if they flinch, you do a different spot, and as you are saying the 'suggestive' words you gently tap them so the rest is blurred out and they focus on that moment. I watched a documentary about that once, but forgot the guy's name. typical.

    Just play with a 20 dollar bill in your hand, well on sight, when having a friendly conversation with the cashier and subtly pay with a 10 dollar bill. You'll often get change for a 20.
    Works better if you're not American. All American dollar notes stupidly look the same. :)

      @tiffanysketches 9 років тому +1

      Josianne Comptois That's why they look the same, so you have to look at the numbers. Although, we managed to get one of our registers $90+ over one evening because one of our workers accidentally gave change for a $10 instead of a $100. The guy never came back for the correct amount, so we all split it as tip money. Moral of the story: count your change.

      Just so you know, cashiers usually get paid close to minimum wage, and at the end of their workday the money they have left is counted and compared to what should be left. When money is missing, they likely get at least a slap on the wrist.
      So by tricking these people, you're maybe saving 10 bucks, but the cashiers get a bad closing day with their boss in return, which affects their livelihood.

    Here's a method which doesn't require any mind control at all: There is a cut between the examination of the ring and the jeweler putting the item in the box. Darren could have ended buying a much cheaper piece, something that might be only $20. Darren hands the jeweler some bills with paper wrapped around them (almost like an envelope). Notice how the jeweler squares the stack up by the side away from the camera. The crease could have been on the side facing the camera. In fact if you pause at 3:05 it looks like there is a crease in the paper. This is essentially a pocket with cash in it.
    The Jeweler thumbs through the pocket when someone walks in front of the camera and takes another quick peak a moment later. The item is cheap and the jeweler sees money in the pocket, so he doesn't yell for security when Darren quickly takes the bag and leaves. The jeweler counts the money and realizes Darren has over paid. Or maybe Darren actually did the rob the store and underpaid. Maybe this is why the jeweler talks to the woman and looks concerned. Either way, he goes outside to see if he can catch Darren, who is long gone.
    I'm not saying this is how he does it. But if my options were that vs. spending decades mastering mind control, then spending weeks conditioning a shop owner, and then stealing something valuable enough that it might send me to prison.... I'd probably go the easy route. That's just me though.
    Oh, it could also be totally faked.... But that couldn't be. A man who deals in deception would never deceive his audience like that, would he?
