  • "Greasy Coat" played on fiddle by Lee Hammons (1883-1980) of Pocahontas County, W.Va. Photo and recording by Brad Leftwich. Dwight Diller took me and my friend David Winston up to visit the Hammonses (Sherman, Maggie, and Burl) in the summer of 1973, and David and I stayed with Sherman several nights. In addition to the siblings, Sherman took us to visit Lee, who was a friend but not a close relative.

Lee Hammons was my Grandaddy and I grew up sitting at his feet in the evenings after supper, listening to him play his fiddle and banjo. Grandaddy Hammons was the first love of my life.

Brad, I've got many videos I've made back in the early 1990s at Clifftop, Augusta, and other festivals. I've thought about putting some of them on UA-cam, but am concerned about violating the rights of the heirs of the artists. Obviously, I wouldn't be making any money off it, but I guess UA-cam would be, so it would be commercial use in a way. What is your opinion about it?

It's a valid concern, Gordon. Here's my take: I don't know how UA-cam works exactly, but I don't have ads on my clips and I'm not sure how they'd make money from them. If the material is traditional/public domain, the venue is public, you made the videos and you're not trying to monetize them, I'm not sure what legal issues there would be. I believe in respecting people's wishes, though, so if I were contacted by a family member who wanted me to take down a clip, I certainly would do so.
