  • Allan John Clarke (born 31 July 1946 in Short Heath, Willenhall, Staffordshire) was one of English football's greatest goalscorers who shot to fame in the much-admired and feared Leeds United team of the 1970s.
Clarke peaked at Elland Road and he scored 26 goals in his first season (and earned the predatory nickname "Sniffer", which stuck throughout his career) as Leeds United chased a dream "treble" of League championship, FA Cup and European Cup though ultimately they won nothing. Clarke hit the post in the FA Cup Final at Wembley (with strike partner Mick Jones following up to score the rebound) and then went on a mazy run through several Chelsea defenders in the replay to set up a goal for Jones again, but Leeds United still lost. The title had already gone to Everton on the last day of the season, and the European Cup campaign ended with defeat to Celtic in the semi-final.

a world class striker. what a legend, and what an understanding with the much under-rated Mick Jones.

Being an international meant something then. The team that Revie built was quite astonishingly brilliant, and it is a feat that will never be equalled again. To build a team that good at a club that was struggling against relegation in the 2nd division, it's just remarkable

@@Arunisrelativelycool No comparison Leeds did it for 10 years with virtually the same players never finished lower than 4th after promotion when it was a far better and harder playing field with other great teams.

Yes Clarke..good player very thin and looked weak, but made up for it with guile and ablility, underated player. cannot recall him being hacked down by Harris et al, so in hindsight was quite durable.

I grew up with Allan. Always was a great player. Far to quick for any of us at Short Heath Playing fields. all of the boys in the family wer good, especially the eldest, Frank.
