She didn't really say what she does as an editor though! She was half getting into it and then she started telling about the copy editor.
Other than that, I did really like the video and am looking forward to the next ones!
You never let her explain what the main job of an editor is... :(
As a self-published author, I LOVE hearing from the editors and more about their jobs!
I'm a little sad that she didn't get to fully answer some questions I wanted to hear because you kinda railroaded her to name another question that was related but never got back to the initial :/ overall this video was super helpful though
Fancy new intro. Love it! Thank you so much for this Tea Time. I'm an English major right now and I'm so worried that I'm not picking the right classes to get a career at a publishing house (like Harper Collins ;-)), but this really took the stress off. I don't know if it would be possible but could we have a tag-a-long video? Where we just follow you at work, seeing what goes on? Haha
If you have a question for Sarah Kaufman, a cover designer at HarperCollins, leave them here for the next episode!
I love illustrating and designing book covers in my own time and I want to know How Do you become a cover designer? and do you have any tips on how you design a cover related to the story?
Hi, I am really interested in book cover and layout design. I was just wondering is being a book designer a hard job to attain? Do a lot of book designers freelance? And what did you study at university? Thank you.
How do you get into this career?
I would love to watch your live shows but its one am in my country :( Do authors get much say in thier cover? Do cover designers read the book? What is the difference between cover designers and artists and their role?
How do you get an editor to look at your book?
I'm in love with all this changes to the epic reads channel I love the new editing I love the new topics I love the quality of the camera I love the end plate I love the music in it I'm just so excited to see this years epic reads I love the changes that have happened just so much it looks amazing and I can't wait to see more this year
"Main character that plays the violin", made me think of If I Stay. Quite a good book and the movie was pretty good.
I just want to tell you how much I appreciate this simple video. I've been at a career lull, not necessarily sure of my next big career move, or even where I envision myself in the future, but this video absolutely sparked an interest in Copy Editing! Nit-picking small details and consistencies in books and movies is what I live for!
This interview was great. It gave me the motivation to pursue editing as a carreer. Jen was simply amazing. She seems so fun to be around. Thanks so much for your answers.
Love the Tea Time revamp! Really it was a smart move
This was totally awesome! I loved hearing about her job as an editor specially because she loves books! On that note I love to read because English is my second language and books really introduced me to the language better!
Question for next week: Have you ever kept a poster of a book cover you loved and which is it?
I'm sad there's no more live TeaTime, but this was really informative, thanks!
Can we get an interview with a publicist or whoever deals with bloggers and ARC copies!?!?!
I have wanted to be an editor since my freshman year of college (im now nearly 2 years graduated), and let me tell you, the fact that I am a voracious reader and love YA and know it's market did not get me a job. I barely got any interviews (and I have been told by an editor at HC that my resume is impressive, so that's not the issue). I don't really know why, and it's frustrating. I'm at a law firm right now bc I needed a job bc $$. I still want more than anything to get that coveted editorial assistant job and won't give up! I freelance edit and copy edit in my free time and love editing and stories with all my heart, so one day it will happen!!! It's been my dream for years.
as someone whose dream is to work at a publishing, this is terrifying. Is there any update? please tell me that things are looking up:(
So many of my questions have been answered! Thank you so much for this amazing video!
Ohmygoodness this was so helpful! I've always wanted to be a vet, but reading has always been my passion, so the job role as editor has always fascinated me. It's just that the term "editor" has been so vague that I never really looked into it. Thank you for this!
Please make an interview like this with a publisher!
That was like totally neww and impressive! Something I would ask is what does an edtior schdeule look like?
I have questions for the designer !
I'm currently a graphic design major with a focus in Print Design, and I always said designing book covers would be my dream job because it fuses two things I love most: books and design :)
With that said I have a few questions,
1) How did you get your job at HarperCollins?
2) When your designing for a book do you work with a team of other people, or is it a solo project ?
3) Can you tell us the whole process of designing a cover from beginning to end result ?
Thank You!
I love this interview! It's so interesting and Jen was lovely! I really like this new sort of Tea Time 2.0 :)
Tea Time has changed my life for the better. It has made me love books even more and increase my TBR pile. It even made me want to work in publishing.
This video has helped me learn more about it.
THANKS EPIC READS
Love hearing about the behind the scenes going-ons of the book publishing world! Thanks Epic Reads!! Keep doing what y'all are doing ;)
First of all, I love the cover for Red Queen. The blood effects on the crown are great and I especially like the font choice and the spine! But, here's my question: When a designer works on a cover design do they usually do everything on their own, from creating the concept to making the actual piece to prepping it all for printing and such, or are all these jobs put on different people?
I love love love this episode!! I feel like my IQ just went up a notch, as it does every time I watch your show!! Can't wait till the next one!! Thank You!!
great stuff. good, good, good. Shout out to Aubry, nice cubicle. Was excited to see that 2 weeks were up and so were you.
*begins to cry because I miss the liveshows*
I really liked the liveshows :
I know it bums me out that they're not live anymore
HarperCollins editor! :D YAY! Thank you for the awesome interview! :)
omg sweet valley high and babysitter club where like the only good young readers book my high school library had!! I LOOOVED THEM
Aubry, I missed you in this episode! Margot, you did a great job hosting by yourself this week though! Really neat to see this interview with an editor.
I love tea time! Your videos are so fun!
Every year on the teatime anniversary Margot and Aubry should do a live stream, just kick it back old school💙
For the cover artist:
1. How do you determine what elements to infuse from the novel onto the cover?
2. How do you know if there's too much on a cover or too little?
3. How do you know what's right for the cover, whether to do a full cover design or go for something more minimal (Like, A Thousand Pieces of You vs Red Queen).
4. How do you get that crisp, CGI-esque effect that most covers have lately?
5. Do you have a favorite cover? If yes, why? Is it one that you personally designed?
6. How much does the current competition determine how you go about designing a cover? Would you say you create more with the novel in mind or marketability?
7. How much say does an author have during cover conception?
Thanks!
this is soo much fun. The 15 minute duration felt like tease. I wish it was longer though. Nonetheless, I learn a lot. Wow! y'all have such an amazing dayjob. :))
I'm really missing Live Tea Time and watching Aubry fiddle with her hair. Is it truly gone forever? Say it ain't so!!
This was so great and informative. Thank you
Great interview! I loved hearing more about how to become an editor.
sweet valley, babysitter's club and choose your own adventure were my childhood. :)
thanks! this was very helpful :)
nice opening & section titles. I don't know if I feel compelled to watch the uploads straight away now that they aren't live and only available every two weeks. More Margot! The lovely ladies have awesome rapport & feed off each other. Miss that dynamic. Still a great video! #bookshimmy
Love the new opening! :D Where is Aubrey though?
Yay, Die Once More! I want to read it so badly!
This video was so much fun watching, can't wait for next weeks episode!
Even though Aubry wasn't in the video she was missed! But still this was a great video epic reads team!
Ahhh I'm seriously excited about the Designer :D
I'm studying Design too and i would like to ask:
1. how did you get the job at harper collins to design book covers?
2. any tips or tricks for people who really want to design book covers in the future?
Sorry for my English i'm from germany :)
I love this show, and I miss it being live and weekly! Anyway If you are in charge of the cover design, are you also in charge of the spine and pretty much the whole dust jacket?
Before I get into my #AskTeaTime questions I just wanna say daaaaayyyyuuummm that intro was sooooo good!
Question Time!
1) How do they decide if the cover is gonna be? Is it gonna be illustrated or a cool photo? What would be the color scheme? What font will be used? What would the texture be?
2) What software is used in making covers?
3) Do you read the book to get ideas or does the author/editor just tells you about the plot?
4) How long does it usually take to design the cover?
5) Which cover that you made are you most proud about? Why?
6) What do you suggest to take in college to get into cover designing?
Thanks!
i really wanna know what margot and aubrey do, like what are their jobs?
Hey! So Aubry literally has my dream job. I'm a social media strategist and I LOVE to read. Could you maybe do an interview like this one with Aubry?
OMG thank you so much for this! I'm a senior in high school and next year I'm going to university in english! A book editor sounds very interesting! (Also Aubrey's desk is beautiful!) I live in canada and I really want to work at a publishing company but there aren't any in Canada! How do you end up working at epic reads or random house? I love how she says to get into publishing you need to love books. I love books so much. I'm always reading a book, I don't remember a time when I wasn't reading! Books are my favourite gift. Whenever I get a book in the mail my heart gets so happy. I don't think I like anything more that I like books (maybe the exception of my puppy.)
The intro is amazing!! I love it!
I feel like this is not really Tea Time anymore. For me it was sort of like at get together with books and fangirling and the liveshows made it more personal. :/
I agree :(
I would love to work in publishing and this was extremely interesting and helpful and overall awesome! I am really looking forward to the interviews with more amazing people from all the departments.
Geek girl is like in my top 5 book series ever its sooooooooooooooooooooooooo good
Oh my gosh, this made me want to be an editor. I have my BA in English and I'm getting my MAT in Secondary ed now, but this sounds so awesome!!!
OMG you have a opening thingy!
Did anyone else notice Margot's mug? xD Love it SO much! 💜💙
Editors get to see the greatness before us reviewers. Really cool. Reason I like ARCs
Best place _ever_ to intern with! My love for HarperCollins runs deep!
Super like on this interview! I loved it! Very interesting :)
I'm a Graphic Design student. I would love to know what how is, how long and what it takes the cover design process of a book. How, What and How much is involve the author and the editor in the process. And what really determine what cover is chose.
This was such a great video! It's my dream job to be an editor and I'm going to college for English and Creative Writing :) Thank you so much!
Really interesting video and good job but i really miss the old epic reads and aubrey was missed - without the banter. But you guys are great and was good to understand what you do.
How do you get your inspiration? Do you read the books? Or do you get summaries to work with? What are your Top Five Favorite Designs you have created?
Just discovered these videos, now preparing for three days of non-productivity and video marathoning
I like this new Epic Reads.......
Loving the new intro!
How do you decide to put people or objects in the covers? Do you have to think about the covers of the books that come next if it is a trilogy or a series, to make them match?
I want to know why the cover of a hardback changes when it's published as a paperback, who makes this decision and what are the repercussions on the designer's work? :)
9:21 Jen felt so embarassed she was like: "Oh sorry I didn't mean it".
These videos are awesome.
Falkoff is an excellent surname. Falkoff.... I'm reading!
I started my english degree a couple of weeks ago in hopes of one day being an editor at HarperTeen. I hope my dream can come true.
Question for next week: What was your favorite cover that you have designed? And What is something that you love about designing book covers?
Hi, I am currently a Graphic Design student, and working in publishing is one of the areas I'm interested in, and my questions are, how did you get into designing books, or how does one get into it, and when hiring, what do they want to see in a portfolio? I was also wondering what your process is when designing a cover. Thanks!
(also, the Red Queen cover is absolutely gorgeous)
im just going to comment in case of answer, and say hi yo you my fellow designer
I just got my copy of Red Queen today and I wanted to also ask if you also did the end papers
Do you get some say in what the cover looks like? If yes, what do you like to contribute?
Or, do you have to be a good artist to be a cover designer?
When you design a book, do you take into account what the author might have imagined or is it a case of leave it to the professionals...you!
You probably watched the "Interview with a Cover Designer" but they said both the author and editor wanted a crown on the cover for the Red Queen book. They probably do take it into consideration, but they do have to make something that will sell.
How involved are authors in the designing process? I want to be an author and I always have clear visions for covers for the stories I write. Sometimes I even imagine the cover before I imagine the plot and that is what inspires me.
Questions for the designer: What was your major in college? Where did you go to college? What did you do before you worked at Harper Collins (i.e., were you a graphic designer in a different industry, different company, freelance, etc.)?
Are these exclusively about YA books? I like the access and info, are there any like this for general or literary fiction?
Go Emerson!
Questions for Sarah: How did you land your job at Harper Collins? What was your portfolio like at the time? What would you suggest for a soon-to-be college grad have in their portfolio if they are interested in book design? Thank you!
It's a Sky-bison (The floaty thing from avatar) :D
And to designer: Does someone actually need artistic (drawing) ability or is it more photography and computer skill to be a cover designer?
What sort of education do you need (or suggest) for a job in book design?
For Designer: How many times do you redesign a cover? How many people are involved in the process?
How do i begin working as an editor?
How does the working process of designing covers work, and how does one begin working as one?
Nice mug
Nice new intro!
Avatar's floaty dandelion seed thing is called "atokirina" (Na'vi name) or woodsprite. That's what she meant, right?
Do you work with books in Spanish? I have a book I have been working on, but it is in Spanish, and I heard some editorials have Spanish branches.
My degree is in English. I need to get a job there! LOL
For the designer:
Do you usually read the whole book to figure out what you want to do with the cover or do you just read the summary?
How closely does the designer work with the author to create the book cover?
Haha I love your British accent! Hilarious, yes we all sound like that ;)
QUESTION FOR NEXT WEEKS VIDEO: what is the design process? Do you make a folio and pitch it?
How long does it usually take to design a cover?
How do you figure out what you want the cover to look like?
More or less, how long it takes to design a cover? (That includes the developing of the idea and making it real).
pstd: Will be more episodes of Things I've learned in YA?
4:50 I'M SO JEALOUS!!!
A Sky Bison? (For the flying avatar thing)
2:34 You could have said 'Outlandish', hehe!
I want to be an editor! I would like to know:
how I can be an editor?
I don't want to be a freelance editor, what are requirements to become an editor?
Do I have to be an editorial assistant before being an Editor?
thanks 💜
This video was great as always, Q for the designer: What has been your favourites projects and why?
