I have always been told that if you cramp during exercise your either not in shape enough or low in potassium or both, that is why I think your mustard is helping. People back in the day used to drink pickle juice because that is also high in potassium. I myself have always had issue at night cramping and I was taught it’s caused by low magnesium I have been taking magnesium for some time now and it’s no longer an issue. I am older 64 but still do lots of long distance backpacking. I have to train much harder than I did when I was young like you but I still put in fairly big days. I go pretty light, my base weight is about 8 pounds. I also carry that extra Smart water bottle cap. I have never lost one but I certainly have misplaced it way to much because I am generally a mess lol .
Magnesium, potassium and sodium are the electrolytes most prone to imbalance with the exertion of backpacking and the resulting muscle cramps. When replacing magnesium don't go too heavy on it as too much can cause you to get the shits which is no fun out in the wilds with cat holes, limited water etc. LMNT is a product that has all three and is light to carry and tastes great too.
It's also good to carry a spare water bottle lid to put over the top of your tent stakes as you push them in with your foot - protects your shoe from damage. I usually use the flip top lids on my drinking water, but if the hinge part breaks, I can see that would be a problem. Looks like I'll have to carry a spare of that type too. I like the shower idea that E-Clampus shared - I bought something like that for watering my indoor plants. That'll be coming with me in the future.
Heat up a needle and poke about 8 holes in the smart water bottle cap. Use this cap to convert your water bottle into a shower. Great for washing dirty feet. You can always use tape to plug the holes if you need to use it as a replacement bottle cap.
learning experiences. Next time, we just chop a few inches out of your legs. lower your stride length a bit, so we might keep up a little bit. And so you'll fit in really popular ultralight gear.
HAHA! I have footage of you on that trip trying to get dressed in that tent...It's just your hunched silhouette and then parts of the tent being poked out from the inside! lol!
@@BACKPACKERish didn’t even have enough room for a pack of mustard in there lol. But it was pretty darn light and easy to pitch. Really good piece of gear if you’re under 6’ tall.
The mustard trick is a definite winner. A second reason to carry a few packets is that it also helps with acid reflux. Been using it instead of tums or rolaids for years. Works great and is quick acting.
For the water bottle lid, I just use the sport top. Just flip it open, I don’t have to take it off. It also stays cleaner since you don’t actually have to touch it while drinking. BUT keeping a spare is a good call.
I was told about the mustard for leg cramps, and thought it was crazy. But after multiple times, I’ve learned it is absolutely effective - and fast! I’ve only used it for regular leg cramps at home, not on the trail.
An old man at hunting camp told me about the mustard years ago. In my 40s and with some injuries, I also carry a lacrosse ball in case I need to work out some tightness.
👍👍👍 Whine: "My bottle top can get / gets lost." Ans: "Go thirsty." Pack Notes .. she is definitely a 'keeper' .. cherish her 💕. Mustard. Good to know, together with the comments generated .. thanks. Take care ..
Mustard works! My upper, inside leg muscles cramp. Sometimes one leg, sometimes both. It's crippling! A couple of visits to a couple of doctors turned up zippo. Ongoing googling showed me story of two doctors who were long distance kayakers. One got a leg cramp far off shore. They began studying the phenomena and researching ways of stopping the cramping. They were pushing mustard as an almost instant relief. I don't do anything or go anywhere now without mustard.
love the lanshan 1 pro but i agree there is a height restriction. i sleep fine in it but yeah, i cant sit up in it without touching the walls too much (which is shitty if theres condensation build up, who wants to touch a wet tent first thing in the morning?). so, looking into getting an XMID 1P (or even the Pro 1 if i can save enough flo for next year).
one thing to do is to guy out the sides to get some more headroom, don't stake the guy lines directly into the ground, rather wrap the guy lines around a 4ft stick then stake out (but you probably already knew this)
Yeah, as a tall guy (6'5"), I agree there's definitely no sitting room in the Lanshan 1 tents. You can only sit in the middle, basically with your legs hanging out in the vestibule. It's still a great option for sleeping though. I've only got three tents, so I'm no expert, but it's definitely my favorite of the three. Having said that, I did switch to a hammock and will probably not go back to the ground. I haven't invested the big money to get lightweight in a hammock yet, but I'm just too old to be getting up off the ground these days 😂
@@MattyOutdoors I've got a standard, not a pro, mostly because I was planning on getting both the 3 and 4 season inners. Being tall, and perhaps not an expert in pitching the thing, I do this just to keep the inner off my face. It's a "must do" for tall people imo, but yeah... It doesn't add any seating room.
Never knew about the mustard hack. I will put some in my diddy bag. I will be honest. When i saw the Thumbnail I thought to myself " Oh my god! Don't tell me he is spritzing his butt with a mustard bottle bidet now? " ... I am glad this is not the case.. :D

always have mad respect for folks in their 60s, out backpacking still!

would be nice on a long trip
@@MattyOutdoors Or a short one.
yeah, really short if it was an accident. But I'm giving you the credit for the joke.@@E_Clampus_Vitus
As soon as I saw the clip with the tent, I just knew 😅. Appreciate having a good friend to borrow gear from and test out 🙌.

Cool tip with the mustard. I also carry a spare water bottle cap along with an extra Sawyer Squeeze o-ring. 👍
the sawyer oring falling out is brutal!
The mustard tip is new to me. Good to know Matty!

I’m an ultralighter, so I will take POWDERED mustard for my husbands cramps. Thanks so much Matty!
Can you tell me which roller ball you use? Couldn’t find it in the info…
its just a cheap foam lacrosse ball i stole from my kids stash

tried that, and it didnt seem to help much. its definitely a small tent inside

wont catch this guy spraying his butthole with anything
Solution to losing Smart Water bottle caps: replace with tethered caps from CNOC. Haven't lost a cap since.
i wish they made those with sport caps!
Pickles/pickle juice is good for cramps as well
a jar of pickles might be a bit heavy for a backpacking trip though
@MattyOutdoors true but the do have the single packaged pickles in stores. Could always carry a couple just in case or if you simply like pickles. Lol
My Nephew dropped his water bottle and broke his lid, I gave him my spare. ... I must try the Mustard trick. ...
always worth carrying a spare
38? Hell! Try it at 67!!!
thats the goal
