When i got my hands on a 12400f i used the stock cooler, temps werent amazing, but what really got the temps down for me was a cheap chinese socket bracket. The cooler was so firm to the processor it became a real pain just to get it off. At one point i thought that i would just crack the cpu, but 65 C max on load really speaks for itself when using it. Just goes to show how much proper mounting matters
He's right, those Thermalright coolers he mentioned are really good. It may just be anecdotal on my part, but I have used both the single stack Assassin and the double stack Peerless Assassin and they are both cheap and effective coolers.
On a system that is being stressed in hotter temperatures, even a couple of degrees improvement can mean the difference between full and stable clock boosting or thermal throttling. I am a big fan of putting a higher end processor's stock cooler on a lower end processor. Eleven years ago, a friend of mine and I built a brand new computer for his parents and brothers. It was an AMD Athlon II X4 which came with its own little stock cooler. I had helped my friend build his own personal AMD Phenom II X6 machine and he went with an upgraded aftermarket cooler for it. We put his Phenom II x6 cooler on his parent's machine and that Athlon II stayed 15*C cooler under load than with its own cooler. 8 or so may not seem like much but, it really is.
Hi Steve! Another temperature test I would like to see. This is with the use of those RGB lights. Two options I am looking for. Red and Blue! Same configurations, same tests, but only one of these colors to shine inside the case. In my opinion with blue light it should be cooler in average. But let's see, if the idea is right. Thanks for all the wacky tests you've done.
That thing looks amazing. Noctus needs to make one like that, tall with a 120mm fan i bet temps would drop like crazy. And hey 8°C is a damn decent drop.
I honestly think that stock coolers are the best route to go with for budget systems. They are designed to keep CPUs cool enough under realistic loads rather than stress tests so you can have a guarantee that your CPU will not overheat. It is best to not overclock while using a stock cooler, as it has led to some Ryzen 5 3600s to fail over time, but if you're rocking an Intel CPU, that's not a problem anyway because all non-overclockable CPUs are the only ones to get a stock cooler.
LOL! I have no RGB in my system maybe I can get more FPS with a light show. Its just like a flame job on a car, definitely makes it go faster!! Love your vids! Cheers.
it is heat-pipe free and takes airflow to the VRM heatsink, so it is actually a good CPU cooler, you don't need worried about the chassis is horizontal or vertical.
my oldest intel stock cooler is a now 14 years old intel lga 11xx pattern cooler by Delta (yes, the same Delta as the once celebrated PSU-maker) and the thing is built like a tank. it has a copper core, those push pins, a .6 amper dc motor and has survived countless refits (but i'd say at least 30) just during the time it was with me. it still is mine, but sits on a shelf nowadays.....
I recently picked up Arctic's Freezer 36 air cooler and it's really good for the price. I went for the ARGB version which was £22. Comes with MX-6 paste though I'm not sure if it's that much different to the MX-4. It certainly keeps my 5700X nice and cool. I've seen it reach as low as 28C at idle.
It's nice that Intel has finally updated their box coolers to where they are actually pretty good because I remember them not being very good for years.
I’ve wanted a video about this since it got released with the 12900 some years ago. I haven’t seen it stand alone in my country but I’d probably buy it for 10 pounds. The standard fan is good enough for the 12400F though.
I would like to see a build that uses as little power as possible without compromising on performance. Undervolting everything, turning of lights, reducing fan speed and whatever else comes to mind.
The RH1 being sale for £9.99 and is actually excellent for the money and looks good with its illuminated core and fins. I did look for it a while ago but it was originally only supplied on i9 CPUs and not sold individually so I understand. The recent sales may be to remove stock because intel is going to no longer supply cooling fans with all its processor lines very shortly.
I have one of the stock coolers for LGA1700 since it was free. I didn't use it but it's probably enough for a 1700 i3 or i5, 12th gens. I like the less noise that slapping on a TR budget cooler gives for under 20 USD.

Why don’t you buy the 20g tube of MX-4? I‘m for sure doing far less part swapping than you and for me it’s worth it much more. And also, I would love to see comparisons to thermalright products, bought a couple of their coolers in the past years an I have nothing to complain about.
I got yoked. My 12400 came with a super cheapy that still fits the socket. What gives? Looks like it's 10th gen. I had a PCCoolers 180 Watt TDP cooler collecting dust so I used that instead anyway. Thing is, if the stock cooler looked as nice as either of these, I would have just used that.

Nice looking cooler for around $13 U.S. It's kind of pricey here in the U.S. I got my daughter an i5-12400 for her build and the stock cooler it does a decent job of cooling. Would love to get her one of these, but I don't want to pay $30 for it.
2:42 VERY NICE
Why don’t you buy the 20g tube of MX-4? I‘m for sure doing far less part swapping than you and for me it’s worth it much more. And also, I would love to see comparisons to thermalright products, bought a couple of their coolers in the past years an I have nothing to complain about.
I'm not an Intel fanboy, but that heatsink is actually quite... Ugh, I'm going to say it... sexy.
I wonder if it would be able to handle the 120W PL2 for the i5 12400 at 100%?
I got yoked. My 12400 came with a super cheapy that still fits the socket. What gives? Looks like it's 10th gen. I had a PCCoolers 180 Watt TDP cooler collecting dust so I used that instead anyway. Thing is, if the stock cooler looked as nice as either of these, I would have just used that.
Wait why is green the color for the coolest temperature? Wouldn’t blue be the obvious choice? That seems bizarre. Is it a UK thing?
Would of been better to have a 3 way comparison between the 2 intel coolers against an equivalent priced after market cooler
I bought an artic 36, for only 32 pounds. honestly the best air cooler ive ever used. i have a new i5 14400 and it was hitting 85 on 100% load on the stock cooler, i doubt these are enough for anything above a i5 13400
I'll be sticking to my existing water cooler AIO with 360mm radiator. Even with that the CPU hits up to 80C, so any less cooling would be bad
Actuslly is a nice design
I wonder how it does compared to the RM1 with a higher wattage part?
8 degrees , rgb, and quieter fan all for 10 bucks is pretty good
Makes me wonder how it would stack up against axp90-x53, its 17£ on amazon
I dont know where you got them for a tenner. Most of the place online i saw sold them for $30 minimum. At that price, it's better to get tower coolers.
damn the RH1 is rather... impressive for a higher end stock cooler.
