  • The 381-series trains are one of the oldest trains still operating in Japan, and are also one of the last Japanese National Railways-era express trains still in service in the country. However, their days of operation are quickly coming to an end, with their replacement trains scheduled to enter service starting in April 2024.
Though we have covered the experience on these trains before, during his December trip to Japan, Richard YS took the opportunity to obtain final footage of these trains, and to take one final ride on them before they are gone for good. Join him on the Limited Express YAKUMO as we witness golden sunrises, stop at a mountain town for train spotting, and follow rivers, mountain ridges, and lakes, whilst bearing witness to the final days of the 381-series trains.

At least the new 273 series will be pushed back to April 6.
Edit: that said, the 381s are kicking around until the Fall at least (but not the ones painted in revisionist liveries).

May wanna start paying attention to Toritetsu twitter/X once the Super Yakumo livery is retired April 6.
Edit: now that makes me curious what they will do with spare Thunderbird 681/683; I think one of 287/289/681/683 will be re-allocated to Yakumo service unless there is a service reduction. Can’t replace 62 381 series cars with 44 273 series cars.
