Street Fighter X Tekken had a cool concept where characters dressed like someone from the other series (ie Cammy dressed like King). It'd be cool if other crossover fighters pulled that off.
I often joke that if I spent as much time in Soulcalibur playing that actual game as I did customizing the outfits, that I'd be one of the top-ranked players. For real, I love me some alternate character costumes in games of any genre - but when they're customizable, I get obsessive about that stuff.
Regarding Smash, Project M/+ has some fantastic alternate costumes. Some are references of course, but some are also original, while still being fitting for the character. Ice Climbers have the comrade climbers outfit, ROB has the different console head outfits, Lucario has a karate gi, etc. It's a great example of what the official Smash games could be doing with their alt costumes. On another note, custom colors are awesome, and I wish more fighting games had them. Really glad CotW is gonna have that as a feature.
Problem is making all those unique alts takes a lot of time, especially with model changes. Unfortunately the Smash team doesn't have all the time in the world to make all the special alternate costumes for every character, and only most important ones get these Mario, Link, Pikachu, Kazuya, Sora, Cloud. While they would be nice, alternate costumes are not the dev team's priority, and of course a fan-made mod made by people who have tons of spare time and have access to pre-existing models have more freedom to do this.
So just some silly trivia; GBVSR will re release Battle Pass costumes, they said so during EVO 2024 interviews SamSho 2019 had Japan exclusive Puzzle and Dragon outfits for Genjiro and Shiki KoFXV also does the Arc System thing of it animates the clothes along with attacks so Garou Terry and Classic Leona are actually different characters, early balance patches tried to nerf Terry, only for the Garou version to not be affected for a while lol
FighterZ does crazy manual manipulation of the 3D models (sometimes frame by frame) in order to simulate it's anime aesthetic However, unlike something like GG, it's meant faithfully recreate existing source material from a manga/anime IIRC alt costumes were theoretically possible, but the amount of work it would've taken to completely remake a character's model and carefully re-animate it just for a single costume was comparable to basically just creating a new character instead. So it was basically either a new character or a single alt costume.
Oh, the NRS part of this video's gonna be _great_ Dissdia 012 had fantastic alternate and DLC outfits too, with the DLC ones being really affordable, and the in-game unlockable ones being just as intricate. Only problem was that some costumes were never released in certain regions or outside of specific promotions: Gilgamesh's Type-0 outfit was distributed through a Japanese magazine (?), Lightning's Aya Brea costume and Cecil's SNES sprite design only came as first print bonuses with 3rd Birthday and FFIV complete, and Squall's KH costume was a another Japanese magazine giveaway but also part of the EU Collector's Edition. If you wanted the costume and lived in the US, you were assed out.
I remember being blown away by how many costumes DOA2 Ultimate for Xbox had and the fact they could all be earned in-game (best method being getting all the items for each character in survival mode) was icing on the cake.
I still play DOA2U to this day; all those outfits! My mom saw me playing it back in high school she sad "I thought you said you're gay." I had to explain to her it's not about finding the costumes hot or sexy, for me it was a fashion show.
What makes the SNK situation is even more unfortunate is when you factor in the Maximum Impact series: Each character would have a standard and an alternate costume along with a slew of color options. The colors were as complex as the ones from games like Skullgirls, to the point that some costumes even had added details like little items.
I'd also point out for DOA5 that pretty much everything that was a legacy costume was a free unlockable you could get just playing the game save a few, and I think they're the best and most fitting outfits for the cast too. So in that regard I think that's something it has over the current FGs' handling on alternate outfits.
The whole fiasco with Magneto’s alt costume in Marvel vs Capcom 3 was pretty funny. It’s like, with all the Magneto costumes to pick from, they picked the one costume that got Marvel Comics in trouble. You also got to imagine they had to run that by Marvel. My only guess is they probably thought they were in the clear because it’s not exactly the costume from the cover that got them in trouble; that and Marvel only got in trouble for the cover; like they didn’t have to pull the House of M comics they were selling. But why temple fate? It really sucked they never replaced it with anything. Like OK, you messed up, you had to pull, at least replace it though. Also sucked the alts in that game didn’t have color options, I remember that being a surprise after I bought the DLC costumes. When Marvel vs Capcom 3 was in development, costumes Magneto had that they could’ve picked where: - Xorn - Two different Age of Apocalypse costumes (the main one and the one from X-Men Omega) - The M costume - That New Mutants headmaster costume - The variant of his main costume he has while on the New Mutants and in some of the Acts of Vengeance event - Two different Ultimate costumes - The living Magneto from the Marvel Zombies - The different Zombie Magneto from a cover of Marvel Zombies - Movie Magneto (someone make a mock MVC3 costume of this that looked pretty cool) - X-Men: Evolution (looks a lot like the X-Men Omega costume) - Joseph (Onslaught or Shi’ar) - Planet X
I wasn't expecting you to bring up playstation allstars but thank you, it was a pleasure for allstars to get some credit. As for smash you're right it comes down to licensing but also mandates for some characters due to their respected companies. For example sonic has to be the blue blur with is why "majority" of his colors has blue as the primary in the RGB Hex code cause sega demands it. For further proof look at sonic color's multiplayer mode in order to have a green & red sonic, the avatars you're controlling in multiplayer are robots. For Pacman he is the synonymous yellow cheese wedge with is why we didn't recieved any inky, blinky, pinky, & clyde colors. Not to mention that whole Ms. Pacman rights debacle going on, once again a mandate by namco. Then you have Final fantasy 7 characters with emo versions of colors i.e. a dull pink, or a dull green, or a moody blue etc. Due to square enix believing that this is what final fantasy 7 is, a moody franchise. Last but certainly not least is Pokemon. The pokemon company really, really, REALLY doesn't want you to have a shiny charizard as an alternate color or any shiny pokemon colors. PERIOD. For further proof look at poken tournament's alt color. It's because of colors & costumes, that got me studying colors in the RGB. I've mastered primaries & all the way to quinary colors. The reason? I loved 99% of all the alts of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, yes including those stuck in the original MVC3 such as the black & green spidey suit. But 1 alt drove me into pure madness & spite. It was the astonishing xmen wolverine color AKA bleached wolverine. The reason why I hate it? It's because it's so similar to default wolverine. Yes I know the origins of that particular alt but I also am aware of other wolverine alts they could've picked from 2010 & prior. But I must thank that hideous alt. For it drove me further into colors & I know so much more than ever before. Which is why my video game projects I have a color director as a role within the company. The main job of a color director, particularly fighting games is to make sure the colors aren't too dull like MKX but not too saturated. To help guide the player/s without them knowing. For alternate colors I have a picture of bleached wolverine on the wall so staff members can see THAT & know to never make a color such as that. There's also a sticky note next to it letting staff members know that "no the ink on that paper is not dried, it's just that alt in particular". But enough of me rambling. Thank you Baberuthless.
@@baberuthlessWell not quite. This was for DISSIDIA 012, as a cross promotional thing as in Japan the game released close to Parasite Eve 3. It's not Lightning turning into Aya Brea, but Lightning using Aya Brea's PE3 costume. Also makes sense as both Lightning and Aya are voiced by Maaya Sakamoto. Funny enough Lightning using the costumes from other characters would become a common thing on LIGHTNING RETURNS. She get's a Cloud costume, an Aerith costume (they are also both voiced by Maaya Sakamoto), a Yuna costume (promotional with the close reléase of FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD) and Lara Croft.
despite the low number of DLC costumes in KOFXIV, SNK added some cool visual and sound touches to them classic Kyo- has the sound effects on his hit/block from KOF94 Nightmare Geese- audio is distorted to make him sound demonic ‘98 Athena - more sparkles on her psycho based attacks pajama Meitenkun - his pollow is a cat pillow that makes a “meow” when you send it
Maan, your videos are so good! The pacing is perfect, and you never linger on a topic for too long. The lengths of the videos are perfect for listening to in the background while I work on projects. In an era where everyone seems to be creating more and more short-format videos, your content is really refreshing!
the reason a ton of games in the 360 and PS3 era had to roll out patches as free dlc was because Microsoft had a policy where developers were only allowed to push updates to their games a handful of times and selling patches on the store was a workaround.
I don't play any modern fighting games and I hardly even pay attention to any series outside of Street Fighter, and I still had a lot of fun watching this even though I don't interact with almost anything in it! I appreciate going through each franchise (or multiple by the same developer) individually rather than just talking about random games here and there and jumping all around.
During DOA2Us active years, one weekend night I sat and played Arcade/Time Trial nonstop to unlock EVERY character's costume. Lasted a while, and when it was over my wrists and hands were in complete pain.
Also with regards to KOF XV and presumably City of the Wolves, thanks to the Unreal engine, KOF XV has gotten a hell of a lot of mod support, replacing the eight colors with separate costumes referencing a bunch of different outfits for characters, shoutout to CalypsoDynamo's Utimate mod packs, Amaso's skins, and of course everybody else who've contributed a bunch of developer-quality costumes to KOF XV. I'm willing to bet we'll get a similar treatment with CoTW as well when that comes out
Something I've always loved is when they actually do alt costumes in 2D games. In Street Fighter Alpha 3, the X-ISM style changes your character's mechanics to work like Super SF2 Turbo, and actually changes some visual aspects, like making the Hadouken use it's old sprites, but Chun LI gets her whole SF2 look in X-ISM. In King of Fighters after '98, there was a strangely sizable genre of characters that basically existed to be an excuse to add Kyo's older looks into games, be it 2D like KYO-1 and KYO-2 from '99 and NESTS Kyo from 13, and even Kyo Classic from Maximum Impact, which was 3D
To this day, I still think the wildest costumes in fighting games are all the "Another" skins from the KoF Maximum Impact games. They were so heavily themed and over the top, some of the characters didn't even look like themselves, it was like having brand new ones
THANK YOU. I love MK1 and I’m like low key scared to say it online. 😂 I love pulling up a podcast to listen to and then playing invasions, then going to dress up characters with whatever I unlocked and then even snapping some pics. Great video!! ❤
People seem way too hyperbolic on their MK hate. I love the series and MK1 I have a lot of fun with. It’s got its issues but so do the other popular ones
Me seeing an Xrd player complain about Strive 4 years in a row: First Time? (To be frank, every franchise has this mindset. I don't doubt we've seen a Street Fighter or Tekken player with a "hot" take).
Fun video. I love seeing people make mods but they’re usually of the crossover variety. Mind you, those absolutely have their place, I just like having bespoke alternate outfits that feel like something the character(s) would wear in their off-time.
It’s interesting to realize how many games are weird with alt costumes (like KoF barely having any, NRS always making getting them a chore, etc.) Getting the costumes for Akira was the only reason I kept playing SFV for so long lol. Hopefully SF6 will make more and they’ll have better currency increments. Great video as always!
KOF Maximum Impact 2 had a great emphasis on alternate costumes and colors, with the entire cast having wildly different designs as their "Another" variant. You could unlock extra colors by playing the challenge modes or by beating the story, and as a final reward, the last color of the normal version of the characters would always be a third secret costume, with them usually being references to other SNK games (Like Ralf and Clark being dressed as Marco and Tarma from Metal Slug, Rock being Kaede from Last Blade, so on.)
The one thing Tekken 8 does that I kinda don't like is that instead of the defaults being broken into different customization slots like in Tekken 7, it's an entire outfit that can't be changed or altered besides accessories or color options
Babe, when you talk about Skullgirls alt color references, I think about Pocket Bravery alt colors, they are also full of references and a very smart way to implement some kind of alt outfit in a sprite-based fighting game. I'd love to see you cover this game in the future, it is great!
great video! I'd love to do a deep dive into the visual power of being able to link a certain unique fit to like a player in your friend group or local or top tournament level. Personally, I think there's two ways about it. For the single player experience into fighting games, various costumes and customizations are really exciting. For multiplayer, I rather there be a wide range of colors (freely) available so no matter whose system you're on people can have their choice. I love how SoulCalibur does customization, and I think it's at the same time way more cost effective for developers to just have random shapes and structures that can be freely altered, and also very expansive in the amount of creativity it offers those types. I'd love if most fighting games could get that system and it'd be like the old WWE game days where people can upload the recipes online, and people could rate their favorites and download them.
The Deadly Alliance skin for Sub-Zero is 5 dollars, only in the first few seasons of M1K it was 10 dollars for skins. But now all costumes in the store are 5 dollars or 500 dragon crystals. You can also get 75 dragon crystals for free each week now. And obviously the dragon crystals to collect from base characters.
2:39 Cygames and Arcsys are VERY aware of this and have stated multiple times that they wish to bring these items back as they are mostly against FOMO in video games. The reason they haven't is mainly because they haven't found a concrete way to sell them that would both make players happy and supply substantial monetary gain. But they have let us known that they will bring these costumes back to be purchased at some point.
Just wanted to add some insight to the Netherrealm DLC Patch VS Compatibility pack discussion. Back in the early days of online gameplay, patches were relatively difficult to get approved and pushed through to live on XB360 and PS3. That's why a lot of games at the time (Saint's Row, Gears of War, Mortal Kombat) had compatibility packs that were basically empty shells containing the new assets, as getting a DLC approved was less hassle overall. Nowadays, the patching process though still slow, is a lot faster for consoles. One small part of why games are so huge (See Warzone clocking in just under 200 gigs. You need to have the assets for every single skin/gun/character that's ever been released built into the game.).
2:38 Calling out here, they did announce when showing off Versusiw that they were “looking into” ways to bring back the battle pass costumes. Nothing has come of it yet, but there is a very good chance these costumes will become available the regular way in the future.
I want to mention that in Street Fighter alpha 2 there is an alternate costume for chun li that gives her her original street fighter 2 outfit :D to select it you need to have the cursor on chun and hold start for 5 seconds followed by any punch or kick button
Dead Or Alive 2 Ultimate totally spoiled us back on OG Xbox with like a million unlockable costumes for everyone. Nowadays the series is infamous for its DLC costumes totaling over a grand USD if you wanted everything (which like… no, there’s no world where that could ever be worth it). SoulCalibur also was neat. Everyone had an alt, with another unlockable for most characters, and starting with 3 you could also make fully custom costumes.
Ahh costumes, always a treat when games have them, and I'd say that's mostly the case with fighting games, even if sometimes it gets screwed up, as with some highlights in this video. (Like wow, I didn't even know that's how M1K did costume selection, to quote Kano, "F#$%in' whoops") As for some highlights I'd like to bring up; Well Soulcalibur 2 had unlockable 3, and sometimes 4P's which was awesome. (Like for example, Sophitia and Cassandra had costumes that referenced Dower of Druaga and Valkyrie, or Link having blue, and purple tunic's unlockable, like the rings in the OG Legend of Zelda, along with his red one being his 2P) And X-Men Vs Street Fighter having Street Fighter Alpha Chun-Li be a sort of secret character is also pretty cool. I also have some thoughts on games touched on in this video too though. First off, Prison Superman isn't the only skin you need to use the mobile game to get, you also need to rate it to get Knightfall Bane, you need to get a Batman card to get Batman Beyond, you need to finish a bonus battle to get New 52 Green Lantern, and you need to get a Joker card to get Arkham City Harley. (Despite the fact that there's an Arkham City skin pack with Batman, Joker and Catwoman already. >_> I don't even like that outfit all that much and that still ticks me off) I'm pretty sure you also need to log in with your WBID to get New 52 Flash as well. And while it is neat that all the Playstation All-Stars characters get at least two alt outfits aside from the default, (And some characters like Kratos, Nathan Drake and Jak having four is awesome) you can definitely tell they were struggling with some characters. (Like Dante just has him without his coat and shirt on, or just without his coat on, while still wearing his shirt; or Nariko having just an extra bit of armor and a face mask, and a dress that still doesn't really change much)
SC6 was the first SC game to allow you to use guest character movesets for created characters for Haohmaru, 2B & Geralt. A complain many had before for Ezio, Kratos & The Apprentice/Starkiller.
On the granblue battle passes: i forget when but the devs have talked about bringing the skins back either as reruns of old battle passes or just straight buyable like the other skins
Another great video! I agree tekken has the best customization but just wish you could put some of the items wherever you wanted instead of set locations
Just wanna note that for injustice 1 that you can not get Arkham city Harley either. Also they did not give those costumes out after the shut down of that stuff unlike MKX where they did give them out after a while. Edit: I am talking about the ultimate edition
Something I might add is that (for at least on Switch and PC) MK 11 did eventually let player 2 use custom variations for local versus, I picked up my copy of the game a year or two back so I never really noticed so I never knew it initially being player 1 only until this video.
Really nice video @Baberuthless. For some reading this comment it probably will not make much sense to them but bear with me. I can no longer see the screen but yet I care about the costume my character is wearing. So for instance if a classic costume for a character is available I will more than likely apply said costume. This goes back to when I could see the screen I guess, I can still see them in my mind so I choose that costume. If this is not the case then I will use an AI app on my phone to describe the costume for me, hit or miss I know but it's the best option I have at the moment. I like You @Baberuthless am really enjoying Mortal Kombat 1 at the moment. I was not a fan of how they priced their costumes in the beginning but I think they are doing slightly better now. Still I did pay £10 for Deception Nitara, go figure. I like the costume but that is a shocking price. So why does someone who can't see the screen care so much about costumes? I think in part it's a form of expression, which is something I, like everyone else, cares about. Other than that I have no idea, I do care about it, quite allot.
They probably could of imported snk heroines outfits into KOF if they wanted to. Athena Asamiya changed costumes often in different games Nitroplus blasterz is the only sprite game with 3 characters with alternate costumes, where they actually redrew every frame. Homura, Heart, Sonico bikini outfits. originally DLC on ps4 that came free with predorders. they were completely free at start during the steam release of the game.
For example on what 2XKO can do, you might want to look at what Multiversus is doing, the OTHER f2p fighting game. It have some amazing costumes, like the rowdyruff boys skin for the powerpuff girls, which includes completely new voice over from the original voice actors of the boys. Of course these costumes costs more, but it also have some more simpler and cheaper costumes, many which can be get for free as prizes for the season (which you can choose for whose character you get the skin)
I really wish Fighting games would ditch the battle passes. FOMO cosmetics really doesn’t fit the genre. But KI really had one of the best ways to customize some of the fighters. Arbiter and Jago being my favorite of the selections
I always kinda thought those formats were perfect for fighting games, since the best way to Git Gud at those games is to actually sit down and grind and practice regularly... So a carrot to actually get you to actually play the game regularly to actually get better would help a lot, and a battle pass does put that pressure on you to do so
When capcom released the nova dlc costume in ultimate marvel vs capcom 3, it caused a stir. The new nova comic was supposed to release first, but capcom put the costume a month before
iirc, in Street Fighter Alpha 2, you can play with Chun-Li wearing her Street Fighter 2 outfit, which is different from her with the SF2 outfit and SF2 moves
Hot take: I never liked customization in Tekken. All that time and resources could be spent on making more standard alts for the characters. Plus, rarely you'll see custom alts that look cool since most of the options just look like clownshoes type garbage. By far the worst offender is SC6, where characters don't even have alts anymore, just color swaps. We're going backwards. The golden standard for costume alts is Dissidia 012. Not only would the alts show on the HUD next to your health, but many of them would also change the character's appearance (if only marginally) during EX Mode. That's dedication and attention to detail that I greatly respect.
I love SNK But they really drop the ball with alternate outfits and I hope that they fix that in the future especially when you consider Snk All-Stars The mobile phone beat them up game RPG that had a ton of different alternate versions of characters with different outfits and they never used inspiration from that game for their main titles
From what I recall, the 7th Gen thing of "compatability packs" had to do with Sony and Microsoft's *fees* for hosting patches. There was basically a tax every time you put a patch out, but there wasn't if you put out a DLC that effectively served *as* a patch? Ultimate Alliance 2 did this, Soulcalibur V did this, Sonic Unleashed put patches in PAID dlc funnily enough, it was a very weird thing that existed through the entire generation.
I really love Street Fighter 6. It's so good that literally after 1 beta I could not enjoy playing the fully costumed SFV that I'd bought a couple months earlier. I also love World Tour Mode and have put over 100 hours into it. But the costumes are the biggest dropped ball in this entire game, next to the sad 4 character seasons. It's criminal that *COLORS* for base outfits are locked behind Drive Tickets and the costumes not allowing Drive Tickets is a disappointing confusion. I paid $90 for my preorder, no way I'd spend another $100 on costumes for just the base roster. Especially when there's a stupidly expensive "Play against other players on Street Fighter 6" fee called PS Plus that I can't pay for right now.
Playing Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 so early in my fighting game fandom kinda spoiled me, as many of the characters had a pretty robust selection of outfits. Wanna play as Goku with a torn gi? Krillin with hair and tan sweatpants? A look that was in one anime filler episode? Alternative outfits are one of ny my favorite things about fighting games that use 3D models, and it makes me really sad that they're almost always either paid or in a Battle Pass... the latter of which is just about my *least* favorite things in video games. Also, the Mortal Kombat 1 segment made my head hurt LOL
In SF6's case, I think Capcom is trying to avoid getting into the same situation they got with costumes in SFV: There were too many of them, and some characters got just a few while others (mainly Chun-li) got a full wardrobe
I kinda wish that in MK1 since the story of the game is that we're having all these different timelines invading that for costumes we would've gotten the various default costumes for each character on the roster from each game that they appeared in, like for example if you pick Kitana you'd have every default costume that she's had from MK2 to now so that that if say MK9 Kitana is your favorite version of her you could pick her or if MK4 is your favorite you can pick MK4 Kitana and to have all the various alternate costumes be DLC like say that Summer Kitana skin from MK11 or her Deadly Alliance alternate.
In my experience in Tekken you pressed square or X to chose a different costume. In the case of Mortal Kombat you bought alternative suits in the Krypt with in-game tokens.
Thumbnail reminded me of "Cooking with Scorpion" 😂
Learn about Chopping.
That would make another great video.
Miss when mk used to do dumbshit like that
That was my favorite thing about Deadly Alliance as a kid! Laughed my ass off at the goofy Krypt unlocks lol

Virtua fighter kinda does but they look exactly like the character instead of making it their own like SFxT
Not only that but you could change the color of individual parts for ALL the costumes.
Madelyne Pryor alt for Morrigan would fund Capcom for years
King as Alex was such a cool fit

"Like many ideas Tekken had, it was taken from Vritua Fighter" was nasty work lol

SamSho 2019 had Japan exclusive Puzzle and Dragon outfits for Genjiro and Shiki

Thank you Baberuthless.
the Pokemon company is really weird with shinies
For final fantasy Dissidia they had a costume for lightning that changed her to aya brea from parasite eve
Wait really?!
@edgarlozada3858 Well, that and Aya in turn got a Lightning costume in The 3rd Birthday.
24:29 “Your Sunset” is one of my favorite songs from Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
despite the low number of DLC costumes in KOFXIV, SNK added some cool visual and sound touches to them
classic Kyo- has the sound effects on his hit/block from KOF94
Nightmare Geese- audio is distorted to make him sound demonic
‘98 Athena - more sparkles on her psycho based attacks
pajama Meitenkun - his pollow is a cat pillow that makes a “meow” when you send it
That’s awesome! Useing audio with the costume like that is a great idea. I’m surprised more games don’t do that
XORN MENTIONED let’s go!! great video as usual, keep up the great work!
Fantastic video as always! I love how in-depth you get with the various topics!
Maan, your videos are so good! The pacing is perfect, and you never linger on a topic for too long. The lengths of the videos are perfect for listening to in the background while I work on projects. In an era where everyone seems to be creating more and more short-format videos, your content is really refreshing!
Thank you ☺️ that means a lot!
the reason a ton of games in the 360 and PS3 era had to roll out patches as free dlc was because Microsoft had a policy where developers were only allowed to push updates to their games a handful of times and selling patches on the store was a workaround.
The UMvC3 costumes are so cool!
Perfect choice for a Halloween time topic 🎃
Awesome video. I appreciate the palettes and customized skins, but having to buy them feels savage.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I try to keep it as organized as I can 😁
It’s nice to hear someone appreciate Mk1 I love it I play towers and online while at work so it works out but I love all the skins
During DOA2Us active years, one weekend night I sat and played Arcade/Time Trial nonstop to unlock EVERY character's costume. Lasted a while, and when it was over my wrists and hands were in complete pain.
Haha That’s just the grind we had to do then. Which I prefer over spending cash
She's at it again ❤🎉
Also with regards to KOF XV and presumably City of the Wolves, thanks to the Unreal engine, KOF XV has gotten a hell of a lot of mod support, replacing the eight colors with separate costumes referencing a bunch of different outfits for characters, shoutout to CalypsoDynamo's Utimate mod packs, Amaso's skins, and of course everybody else who've contributed a bunch of developer-quality costumes to KOF XV. I'm willing to bet we'll get a similar treatment with CoTW as well when that comes out
Gen fu not having a lot of costumes was always baffling considering he’s consistently a strong character
Great Halloween special!
Haha it’s costume month 😉
I don't doubt we've seen a Street Fighter or Tekken player with a "hot" take).
adding this to the endslate of my color palette video, since i feel these vids are peanut butter and jelly-compatible pieces |3
I really wish Smash had more alternate costumes. I would have even taken some DLC costumes as long as they were cheap like the Mii outfits.
I believe the first time Street Fighter series had an alternate costume was in Alpha 2. There is a code that lets you choose her classic costume.
Really loved your video. I spend so much on alternate costumes.
Great video!! I miss the old days of unlocking colors or color creators
I hope more folks do color editors. Happy to see fatal fury doing it!
Very comprehensive and enjoyable video!
The one thing Tekken 8 does that I kinda don't like is that instead of the defaults being broken into different customization slots like in Tekken 7, it's an entire outfit that can't be changed or altered besides accessories or color options
The perfect video for Halloween!
Babe, when you talk about Skullgirls alt color references, I think about Pocket Bravery alt colors, they are also full of references and a very smart way to implement some kind of alt outfit in a sprite-based fighting game. I'd love to see you cover this game in the future, it is great!
I’ve heard of pocket bravery but never played it! I definitely will check it out
great video!

Cygames and Arcsys are VERY aware of this and have stated multiple times that they wish to bring these items back as they are mostly against FOMO in video games. The reason they haven't is mainly because they haven't found a concrete way to sell them that would both make players happy and supply substantial monetary gain.
But they have let us known that they will bring these costumes back to be purchased at some point.
Companies are foaming at their mouths with your spending habits LMAO 😂
That NRS section was so dire Jesus
MK1 was probably my main inspiration for this videos existence
I am gonna eat up the color edit mode in City of the Wolves. I remember in VF5 Final Showdown spending so much time creating outfits
"fingers crossed it's not shit" lol
I want to mention that in Street Fighter alpha 2 there is an alternate costume for chun li that gives her her original street fighter 2 outfit :D
to select it you need to have the cursor on chun and hold start for 5 seconds followed by any punch or kick button
23:24 my only problem with the DLC pack there was no to have a no my Go-Go no Samurai Pizza the Cat and of course no Battle of the planet
If only we got the pizza cats for TVC too 🥲
Dead Or Alive 2 Ultimate totally spoiled us back on OG Xbox with like a million unlockable costumes for everyone.
(Like wow, I didn't even know that's how M1K did costume selection, to quote Kano, "F#$%in' whoops")
As for some highlights I'd like to bring up; Well Soulcalibur 2 had unlockable 3, and sometimes 4P's which was awesome.
(Like Dante just has him without his coat and shirt on, or just without his coat on, while still wearing his shirt; or Nariko having just an extra bit of armor and a face mask, and a dress that still doesn't really change much)
Just finished work for the day and barberruthless upload too???!!!! YIPPPPEEEEEE 🤩🥳🤩🥳😝
🤞
Another great video! I agree tekken has the best customization but just wish you could put some of the items wherever you wanted instead of set locations
Just wanna note that for injustice 1 that you can not get Arkham city Harley either. Also they did not give those costumes out after the shut down of that stuff unlike MKX where they did give them out after a while.
Edit: I am talking about the ultimate edition
I kinda love Taskmaster’s original goofy look. Of course, the UDON Studios redesign rules too.
Granblue Fantasy actually will have all the battle pass Costumes return and be purchasable/ Earnable.
We don't have full details but its confirmed
Thank god!
Something I might add is that (for at least on Switch and PC) MK 11 did eventually let player 2 use custom variations for local versus, I picked up my copy of the game a year or two back so I never really noticed so I never knew it initially being player 1 only until this video.
Xbox Series/PS5 too so i'm guessing it's the same for all platforms
Wake up, y'all. New Baberuthless video just dropped ^^
20k :D
I’m blown away by the support 😭
@@baberuthless you deserve it, your videos cover many interesting facets of fighting games!
Thank you 🙏🏼🥲
Damn, do you play like every game? You are a beast!
Great points about those predatory battle passes too.
I was like "wait, she ain't mentioning Virtua Fighter 4!?" and then you did 😂
I finally acknowledge VF exists
@baberuthless im guessing you're not a fan of the series
I do like it, I just keep forgetting about it 😅
@@baberuthless understandable its not like sega doing anything with the franchise besides the ps4 port
They probably could of imported snk heroines outfits into KOF if they wanted to. Athena Asamiya changed costumes often in different games
Nitroplus blasterz is the only sprite game with 3 characters with alternate costumes, where they actually redrew every frame.
The last thing you wanna be focusing on in injustice 2's gear system is how it looks.
Stats are the important part.
I really wish Fighting games would ditch the battle passes. FOMO cosmetics really doesn’t fit the genre. But KI really had one of the best ways to customize some of the fighters. Arbiter and Jago being my favorite of the selections
KI had an awesome system! That’s a gear system I can get behind
The new nova comic was supposed to release first, but capcom put the costume a month before
19:39 When peacemaker came out, p2 could use p1 costumes, but the next update later broke that.
That aspect seems to work as of now. Maybe they hotfixed it?
iirc, in Street Fighter Alpha 2, you can play with Chun-Li wearing her Street Fighter 2 outfit, which is different from her with the SF2 outfit and SF2 moves
Soul calibur costumes are my favorite especially Ivy and Voldo 😁
11:33 AKA green scorpion
I think that’s his legal name
Hot take: I never liked customization in Tekken. All that time and resources could be spent on making more standard alts for the characters. Plus, rarely you'll see custom alts that look cool since most of the options just look like clownshoes type garbage. By far the worst offender is SC6, where characters don't even have alts anymore, just color swaps. We're going backwards.
The golden standard for costume alts is Dissidia 012. Not only would the alts show on the HUD next to your health, but many of them would also change the character's appearance (if only marginally) during EX Mode. That's dedication and attention to detail that I greatly respect.
also that golbez costume is /sick/
I love SNK But they really drop the ball with alternate outfits and I hope that they fix that in the future especially when you consider Snk All-Stars The mobile phone beat them up game RPG that had a ton of different alternate versions of characters with different outfits and they never used inspiration from that game for their main titles
Modded costumes are fantastic.
2:41 fomo or gambling lol
Ed Boom can’t pleased us anymore.
Costumes w/ scorpion
This was such a nice video.
Ah yes, the Magneto costume of our previous king which is now exiled in Abu Dhabi because he has legal problems in Spain.
I’m still waiting for haviks 2nd alt from deception
In my experience in Tekken you pressed square or X to chose a different costume. In the case of Mortal Kombat you bought alternative suits in the Krypt with in-game tokens.
Not a fan of costumize your character options because it's usually irrelevant or it's use for ridiculous options.
I love customizing outfits in tekken
