Ah yes. The classic case of "we're super inclusive! Unless you're 'x demographic'." Yeah, maybe that DM has had issues in the past of dudes trying to hook up through D&D, but to advertise a game as lgbt friendly and then immediately exclude someone because they're a guy is super hypocritical.

I am even suspecting that if there was an “incident” it was closer to “bi guy who said from the start he was bi knew Sapphic leaning bi fellow player was probably a no, but made a polite overture that he immediately accepted, and DM being bi-phobic decides he has never actually had a moment’s crush on a male or even thought “that David sculpture has some really nice musculature that I appreciate outside a “I want that on me” way. No, the social media posts with ex boyfriends over a decade were staged to get into women’s spaces. Basically she’s kind of JK Rowling for someone running an LGBTQAI group, in my theory, just attacking the Bs, Ps, and As to start and it goes like kudzu

First story: That poor guy! I really hope his confidence improves and someone gives him the wake-up call he clearly needs.
Second story: Oh, DM… Nobody needs to have all the lore of any setting memorized, but if you’re going to run a game in a setting, you need to prepare at least the basics. Maybe try a premade module?
Third story: Good god, what a sexist prick! OP really dodged a bullet with that game.
Fourth story: Once again, bullet dodged. If that player was such a nightmare in session zero, imagine how awful she’d be if she actually played.

I honestly think the DM just had a fetish for trans / NB people and was doing the whole thing in order to "fish" himself. It makes an odd kind of sense that he would actually be the one doing what he accuses others of. Plus, creeps and predators fetishizing trans or NB people like this is unfortunately a real thing and the respective communities have tried to find ways to defend themselves against that stuff for a while now. Honestly, the entire Story and the DM's really weird and really specific selectiveness just reek of something like this going on.

That first story hit some things really close to home. My GF is an aspiring writer (a good one too), and she spends a lot of time on writing forums, and they've made her damn near neurotic. There's so many people with the thinnest of skins and biggest of chips on their shoulders in the writing community who will vilify others for the smallest perceived slight that she's terrified of "not offending anyone," to the point of not writing stories she otherwise wanted to.
I'm talking stuff like "I wanted to have a character be Native American but I'm not Native American and they were saying on the forums that you shouldn't write a character who's ethnic group you aren't a part of." Or even "I'm not pansexual so I can't have a pansexual character even though I really want to and I've done research and talked with pansexual people for their input." Or even "I'm not sure I should publish this because I'm white and there's too many white authors already."
I know it's not exactly the same thing as this story, but the whole paranoia about not upsetting ANYBODY for any reason, no matter how small or unreasonable, is a real problem, especially if you're terminally online.

    • @songbird6414
      @songbird6414 2 роки тому +10

As someone who’s also an aspiring writer and plans on writing about anything and everything, this mindset pisses me off. It’s not your gf’s fault at all, but I mean, come on! If we only wrote about what we know, there’d be next to none LGBT, ethnic, or gender representation outside of straight white males. And by that logic, should none of us write about fantasy anymore? After all, no one I know has fought a dragon or held a magic wand. Come on. I’m all for standing up against bigots, but so many people take it so far and all it does is close off potential talent.

I am a 27 year old white dude from the UK and I'm writing a story where the lead is a young, darks skinned girl from a desert people who happen to have scorpion tails. If the forums she is frequenting are that toxic, I'd suggest she look elsewhere. Also, you cannot please everyone. Write what you want and fuck anyone who complains. Absolutely nothing you do will ever please people like that, so dont waste your time. Seriously, tell your girlfriend that and then get her to sit down and write what she wants to write.
Not wanting to offend people is fine, but not to the point where it actively starts to have a negative impact on you. Just by living, you are probably going to annoy someone for some stupid reason. The only people who you should care about offending are those close to you, not random jackoffs on the internet.
Alright, I think thats my irritation at that gone, it infuriates me whenever I see creativity stifled because of racist morons on the internet. And make no mistake, the idea that someone cant do something based on their skin colour IS racist by definition.

"You shouldn't write a character whose ethnic group you aren't part of" is such strange advice to me precisely because I know where the people saying it are coming from. Obviously, it's not easy to represent the perspective of a very different culture than your own adequately and respectfully, even when you've done your research. But not allowing for that at all is just a death sentence to the demand for representation, and in fact, it'll hit smaller and more marginalized ethnic minorities far harder than larger ones, which really isn't what people interested in good representation should want. I get that the ideal solution is probably consultation, but that might not always be possible either. Maybe there aren't always good solutions for this, but not even trying *definitely* isn't one.

That first story was really sweet. As someone who sits in perpetual fear of becoming "that guy", I greatly empathize with the introvert. For me, having the reassurance that I'm not that way, and even if I crossed a boundary or two, that we could talk about it. Session 0 is the solution to so many of these horror stories, moreover a proper session 0. At least an hour long, with lots of opportunity to get to know yourself, and the other cast of characters in the campaign.

Re. the Star Wars story. There is a lot of pressure 'out there' telling GMs they have to be able to run games without prepping, going on about the importance of improvisation skills, and the like. I'm wondering whether, like the "Anti-That Guy'" in the first story, this GM had taken what he'd read/heard/watched about being a good GM too far and thought that improvising from nothing was something he was expected to do. If you're already anxious, then "Don't over-prepare," and "Improvisation is a key GM skill," can easily warp into "You're a terrible GM unless you can always pull plot, NPCs, and lore out of your arse at a moment's notice."

Story 1: Poor guy, this is the same thing that happens when you watch too much Critical Role(the Matt Mercer Effect). To quote a character from Skyrim here: "If you live in fear of what may go wrong, you'll end up doing nothing." I feel really bad for this player as the old sins of previous That Guys cast long shadows over his D&D experience. r/rpghorrorstories is a good guideline of TTRPG Dos and Don'ts, but be sure to just let the pedal go sometimes, if you're doing something wrong, someone will tell you and there's no shame in that.
Story 2: There's a couple of things they drill into you when you take Animation/film classes in college. One of them is research, when basing your game in an existing fictional universe, it's important to do your research, as not only does it ensure that you actually know what the actual nerf herder's breakfast you're talking about, but it will help you to build the setting up to make it engaging for your players. As he wasn't a Star Wars expert, making a Star Wars based game was a terrible idea from the start. But I'll give this DM the benefit of the doubt and hope he learns from his mistakes.
Story 3: Hypocrites like this make my blood boil wherever they are. As being LBGTQ+ friendly includes Gay men as well, this is most definitely gender discrimination as the DM automatically assumed OP was straight because he wasn't Trans/NB. It's okay to be a hypocrite in some places, especially when it's a matter of changing your mind, but this kind of hypocrisy is just toxic.
Story 4: What a muppet. Step number one when joining a D&D game is to read the setting. If the DM isn't forthcoming with a setting, that's a big red flag, but when a player asks to break that setting for their own purposes, that's a completely different red flag. It's always a sigh of relief when these flags appear at session 0 or before that, as having them pop up mid-game can easily kill a campaign.

At the time I knew next to nothing about Harry Potter, but one of the players was really into it and asked for this setting/game. All I have to say about one of the stories is this.. just because a table is lbgtq+ friendly doesn't give them the right to discriminate against anybody would there be a game man or someone who's straight. I understand having a safe space but blatantly excluding people is a form of discrimination no matter how you look at it. Equality is not supposed to be a double standard but a lot of the time it seems that way. Also I agree with d&d Doge that the DM for that campaign was probably a very volatile and probably wasn't going to be a fun person to play with anyways.

At least the first story, the guy was self aware vs someone that comes to the table and makes every else miserable lol. That "inclusive" story. WTH? LOL. I have red flags, anytime anyone says safe space, inclusive, diversity, made for a modern audience, they really mean only if you think or feel like them. I don't care about people's sexuality, be you. Just don't use it as your personality/identity or same for your character.

1st Story: Not really a horror-story IMO, the "problem player" was only a problem due to trying not to be a problem, but even the "problem" he was causing wasn't really an issue in and of itself. I hope the next time he plays, he allows himself to relax and just enjoy the experience, though it is a welcome change of pace from the usual horror stories with people who lack self-awareness.
2nd Story: I honestly kinda feel bad for the DM. It's clear that he had no idea what he was doing and even less idea on how to run a game, but by the time he realized he was in over his head, he was in too deep to back out. Running a bad game sucks, even more when it kills a campaign, but I hope that the DM eventually tried another hand at running a game and came out of this learning something to prevent this sorta thing from happening again.
3rd Story: The DM honestly did OP a favor by kicking them before the game even started. Chances are, it'd end up being a horror story either way, but one where the DM advertised his table as being LGBTQ+ friendly and a safe space for women, only for it to end up being the most offensive crap that anyone has ever seen, either because they lack self-awareness or because they made the game specifically to troll people from those specific groups. Any table that advertises itself as "safe" or "inclusive" most likely isn't.
4th Story: As was stated during the story, if they had to encounter someone like that, it's better that it was discovered during session 0 and not during the middle of the campaign. I can't even think of anyone who bothered memorizing each D&D spell and even if they did, trying to list them all during the middle of the campaign was too much to ask for.

I think it more that the DM has a fixed idea of what a gay man should sound and act like, in other words a flaming queen, it Also examples why they asked if op was trance. So anyone who does not fit this stereotype must be faking it to harass women, it also sounds like if op was straight he would have been kicked regardless, for as you know all straight men are evil 😒 What do you think.

I suppose that one Star Wars one could've just read a few things? I've dabbled in a few franchises like that, like Halo. Until recently I'd only really read the occasional wiki page or learned some things via Red vs. Blue (which is semi-related due to using the games to create the show, but very broadstrokes-y.) and I honestly don't know how to pronounce half the alien species names yet. I'd probably botch a Halo-RPG just as bad.

So it’s just a matter of preparing yourself before the game and doing some research.

Story 1: Poor guy. I had heard of this before but not the addendum.
Story 2: That title made my neck go snap. WHAT!!!!!!! These sound like rookie DM mistakes and he could have asked for help and not put too much pressure on himself. This is sort of my fear in my home-brew that I am writing up. Good luck DM. Just... stick to the basics and keep is simple for your first time as a DM.
Story 3: OMG! Like, you sound like a man and not like a feminine male and so, like, you can't join. So p*ss off! This is like the fourth lgbq+ etc of letters that I can't remember story that wasn't all that inclusive despite being saying so. Granted the first one was a genuine trap; the other three had been suite bad.

"I wanna run a star wars game, don't correct me you gatekeeping nerds!"
oh please. I have a hard time believing anyone hasn't seen at least one film, but this player could have watched the movies, could have seen an episode of clone wars, could have browsed the wiki. we live in an era where disney is shilling his media hard and is eager to get people into it despite star wars having lost its soul since it was sold to disney.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I know three people that's never watched any of the films; two were women that my parents tried to fix me up to get married to (Indian/Guyanese culture for the curious). One knew what they were, but "had no interest to watch science fiction", and another only watched Indian movies; no Western media at all. The third was an American person I briefly knew in college, but they were hippie/country and willingly didn't own a laptop. They did watch movies, but most of that was stuff like the Notebook, Westerns and romance movies.

Second story: Getting into DMing from being a player is hard, but you need to go with what you know. You need to start off with a setting that you're comfortable in and going straight into being a DM without being a player first really requires you to hit the ground running. My advice is to first run a one shot or a super sort campaign. Let your hair down a little with your first time because you're going to make some bad calls at some point. DMing even with years of experience isn't easy because you need to constantly run with curveball after curveball. In a one shot there are no long term consequences so you can learn from what terrible calls you made without having to spend ages trying to run a game where those past mistakes can haunt you.

@@DnDDoge You don't have to wait, you can just invite your players on a different day to give it a go. Like I said, I would very strongly advise starting off with a one shot. Plus, there might not be an end in sight to the current campaign. Like the one that I'm running, which is just about to hit the three year mark, I intend to just keep that going for as long as possible.

To an extent I can understand where the DM in the third story was coming from in wanting to make their group a safe space for female and non-binary players, but they needed to specify that in the advertisement. You can’t claim a group is inclusive and then get mad when someone you didn’t expect applies. There was absolutely no reason for their blatant rudeness toward OP after finding out he was a man.
