The silver people on the shoreline are in radiation proof suits watching the survivord sail away after the nuclear holocaust. Anything by them is excellent, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash without Neil Young. Each artist is pure genius in their own right as well. I also recommend Steven Stills "Tree Top Flyer"!
@ Jim Wilcox Yes, it's my understanding that the purple berries refer to iodine pills used to combat radiation sickness. The significance of the wooden ships is two-fold. They signify a return to a simpler more natural way of life, and wood also doesn't retain radiation as long as steel.
I agree, and it reminds me of Neil Young's _“All in a dream, all in a dream, the loading had begun: flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun”_ (After the Gold Rush).

I received this album as a present on my 19th birthday. I'm 70, now and still listen to it regularly. Let's just say that after playing this album the first time, everything changed. It reflects the times in which it was made and has remained timeless. It could be called Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Elliott. If it had not been for Mama Cass, it probably never would have happened. She brought them together and she it's on the album, but not credited. With a good set of headphones, you can hear her singing backup harmony...Particularly on Pre-Road Downs.
Amazing band. A 70’s, kind of Folk-Rock, Hippie, proto-grunge music that was simultaneously lyrically piercing and intricately crafted. Each one a cutting edge singer-songwriter of their time and whose harmonies sound like they were raised singing together.
These guys were genius together. Created some of the best music of all time...They all had great careers both together and otherwise...Very little lulls in their careers, overall.
CSNY were the soundtrack of my youth. I was too young (15) to understand some of the lyrics of this song but to me now it is about the folly of colonization. Please listen to Ohio, a song released mere days after, and about, the Kent State shootings that left four students protesting the Vietnam War, dead (one young student, Allison, was actually not even part of the protest but walking through a parking lot when hit by a bullet). CSNY and CSN were EPIC. Others below have suggested songs as well. And please check out Buffalo Springfield, from which Young and Still came. They are astonishing. You will NEVER tire of them. Another 'sea' song...Southern Cross. It'll make you cry.
They are great. This is Stephen Stills on all the electric guitars, on bass AND on vocals. And don't sleep on Bob Dylan if you like lyrics that are deep and take some unpacking. There's a reason he has a Nobel Prize for literature.
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. And I absolutely loved your reaction! It was very moving and right on! I picture two guys in a war opposing sides coming up on each other and realizing that they are both just men, just humans and can share some common ground and compassion. And they can share communications like smiles even though they don’t speak the same language and they aren’t representing the same sides. And as they are going through their struggles, they realize they don’t even know one, nor do they probably even care anymore. This has always just been my personal interpretation. I realize that we all interpret things differently. I love deep lyrics. And the instrumentals and harmonies are amazing.I can’t wait to see what you are going to show a reaction to next! Can you please do another reaction to a Neil Young song called Needle and the Damage Done?
This song is about the Vietnamese boat people - Vietnamese boat people, also known simply as boat people, refers to the refugees who fled Vietnam by boat and ship following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, also known then as Indo-Chinese refugees.
Just subscribed to your page Brother! Love your reactions, and so glad that you are covering a wide variety of music. I'd love to see you along with Rock music, react to 70's Soul and funk like Curtis Mayfield, and others along with some Blues tunes to get our heritage some play. You will love lyrics and production there as well! Keep up the great work, and I will check you out daily now! Peace!
There was a somewhat short lived style of music we used to call "Psychedelic Cowboy Music". David Crosby and Neil Young were in that world for a while. The Grateful Dead around this time were in it. The New Riders Of the Purple Sage were certainly part of that movement. This song drifts that way. Gives you that stoney/trippy feel, with a touch of "country" and some deep, philosophical lyrics thrown in for good measure. It has the gift of being a "protest song", or at least a warning song, without hitting over the head with their message.
Yep. Crosby, Stills & Nash are the real deal. They were the first "super group," as it were, formed by former members of The Byrds (Crosby), The Hollies (Nash), and Buffalo Springfield (Stills and Young), who performed together for the first time at Woodstock. I recommend listening to "Carry On" a.s.a.p. and would add a few of their songs that others have overlooked -- "Teach Your Children", "Long Time Gone", and "Helpless" (distinct from "Helplessly Hoping") -- as well as the Stephen Stills classic "Love the One You're With". PS. Also check out "Bluebird" by Buffalo Springfield when you can. It's a total jam -- right down to the banjo interlude that finishes it off.
They were super group from the 60s Crosby from the birds Nash from the Hollies Stills & Young from Buffalo Springfield there are three part harmony was Magic
Listen many times in fact - awesome song. LOVED the reaction Abra! Truly incredible song here and they have a BUNCH of them for you to enjoy. Do that when ya can...
That's been my theme song for decades. I actually was listening to the song in my car, and looked in the rear-view mirror and saw a police car, back in about 1978.
David Crosby, Steven Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young are all brilliant artists on their own but together they were magical. The best of folk rock with a touch of jazz. This was an antiwar song about people fed up with the government's war mongering and after the nuclear war leaving the planet for somewhere else where all people could live in peace. Neil Young also wrote Ohio which was a song about the four students that were killed by the National Guard at Ohio State University during an antiwar demonstration. The four that were killed weren't even part of the protest. Please check that song out as well of you haven't already.✌
Another band to check out if you like interesting lyrics is the Tragedy Hip, they are a Canadian icon. New Orleans is Sinking, At the 100th Meridan, Grace Too, Wheat Kings. Wheat Kings is a song about David Milguard who was lmprisoned for 20 years for a crime he did not comment here in Canada. ✌
The Jefferson Airplane version is superb too, in fact I slightly prefer it, either way its well worth a listen. Think it was written by members of both bands Crosby, stills and Paul Kantner
Neil Young wasn't on this first album. Also, Stephen Stills played most of the instruments on this album. He's a damn genius, and an incredible guitarist!
Crosby Stills Nash & Young did INCREDIBLE music! Killer harmonies! This is a great song! Check out their song...CARRY ON. It will blow you away! Excellent song! ♥️♥️🎼🎶🎶🇨🇦🇨🇦
Oh and "helplessly hoping" are the best harmonies and best lyrics I maybe ever heard. Acoustic chill song. Folky though. Do get folky but also rock and RnB like this. They do it all
Ohio is a must listen by them! It's about the tragic incident at Kent state university when the National guard shot down 4 people at a Vietnam war protest.
It was definitely tragic. When it happened, I was mad at the National Guard, but I've since realized that they were kids just like the demonstrates, and probably just as scared.
So many great songs in their catalogue, but if you like wooden ships, you will really dig Carry On. Also: Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Helplessly Hoping, Woodstock (written by Joni Mitchell), Marrakesh Express, Ohio. So many great tunes. Great harmonies.
The lyrics are regarding a nuclear holocaust. Silver people refers to men in radiation suits. Purple berries are the iodine pills meant to keep you from getting sick. One of my favorite bands of all time.
This is an amazing song.It was written by Stephen Stills, David Crosby and Paul Kantner while they sat on David's sail boat. Paul Kantner was with Jefferson Airplane so there is another great version by Jefferson Airplane. That is Stephen Stills guitar work that you loved on this song. It was written during the war in Vietnam. The song is about people surviving after nuclear war.
Neil Young was only with them for a short time. He provides a unique edge. CS&N produced great music without Neil and as solo artists. They have MANY fine tunes to enjoy. Steven Stills production talents created many gems. Really glad you experienced this and happy you will explore further. Peace ✌️
Although I have never truly taken the time to analyze the lyrics to this song before, at this moment I believe it speaks of one's spiritual journey through life with the hope of coming out a winner with one's sanity intact. Silver can represent people's emotions among many other things such as a reflective agent of one's soul. The true meaning of the term apocalypse is to uncover, reveal, or to disclose, much like a revelation. The boat may symbolize a spiritual journey, with us as the vessels, on the turbulent sea of life. One cannot get anywhere by remaining on an island, such as Patmos where John was banished. Also connects with the Ark of Noah that was lifted by the waters to where it came to rest on the mountain top, representing the ascension to the highest elevation of spiritual maturity, or the heavenly realm of one's conscious state of being. Once achieved one can rest easy and sail through life with peace of mind as Heaven and Hell are merely states of the mind and being.
Just my two cents for what it's worth. Catherine's comment inspired me to dig a little deeper into the song's meaning. BTW, 'For What it's Worth' is another good song to react to, from the group named Buffalo Springfield in which Crosby, Stills, and Young were all members of at one time or another.
Oh, and wood can represent that which is natural, abundant, and valuable, and versatile for its many good uses. It stays afloat on the water. Water has many correlations, one is truth.
The Horror and death I have always taken as a reference to the Vietnam war. There was a lot of dissent about this. All the protests and draft dodging by those not willing to take part in it. A lot of young men wanted to escape from it. Had to live off grid to escape it. CSN&Y Surely are the stuff. There was a lot of anti war and peace politics from them. They got a lot of death threats for it. Crosby often the lead singer, was particularly worried about it. He is on record as saying that every time he went on stage he didn’t know if he would die there, it only takes one guy with a gun to stand up and that’s it. They were also famous for their vocal harmonies. I have loved this song for more decades than I care to number. You must do “Almost cut my hair”.
Another band you might like that's in a very similar vein is America- Their most famous song is "Horse With No Name"- You've probably heard it somewhere
David Crosby is crusty and unrepentant band and still communicates with his fans on twitter @thedavidcrosby . He survived drug addiction , a liver transplant, multiple heart stents, diabetes etc and toured until the pandemic shut him down at 79 years old. In He had a late renaissance with some good solo albums the last few years. Lately people sends him pictures of their home rolled blunts and he critiques them.
That's EXACTLY how I used to feel when I first heard the name, but then I bought the Woodstock album, and realised how brilliant they are and I've loved them ever since.
Oh my Abra, I am so glad you found out what many of us older folks found out a long time ago. This group is multi-talented - lyrics, harmonies and arrangements. Thanks for this memory.
I'm going to echo some of the comments below. If you check the song credits you will see Paul Kantner listed as one of the writers. Paul was one of the founders of The Jefferson Airplane, and they do an absolutely killer version of this song on their absolutely killer "Volunteers" album!! Wooden Ships deals with visions from a post apocalyptic world, where two from the "other side" meet up. "Can you tell me please, who won?" Eating purple berries to stay alive, etc. The lyrics will make more sense when viewed in this light. There is actually no Neil Young on this song, he comes along on the next album, "Deja Vu". If you pull the track from the "So Far" album, it will be shown as a CSNY album, since that is a compilation, greatest hits, type album, and does contain material with Young. All of the Crosby, Stills, Nash album, Deja Vu, and CSN are absolutely essential listening!
Neil Young is not on 'Wooden Ships,' which is on the first album, 'Crosby, Stills & Nash' ; the second album, 'Deja Vu,' is Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. As well, it was written by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane, who also recorded a version for their album 'Volunteers.'
Here are a couple lines you might like from "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. "Fear is the lock and laughter the key to your heart." and "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now." I first heard those lines over fifty years ago and I still randomly think about them now and then. "Wooden Ships" is a song written at the time of the Viet Nam war and is about people surviving a nuclear apocalypse. The "silver people" mentioned in the song are people on the shore wearing radiation suits.
CROSBY STILLS NASH AND YOUNG... THE BEATLES OF THE 70'S..."WOODEN SHIPS"... BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF WOODSTOCK... THEY WERE CONSIDERED THE BEATLES OF THE 70'S... "SUITE JUDY BLUE EYES", "DEJAVU", "WOODSTOCK".."ALMOST CUT MY HAIR", THEY ARE ARE ALL IN THE HALL OF FAME, PLUS INDIVIDUALLY... AND MEMBERS OF OTHER BANDS...

Yes, it's my understanding that the purple berries refer to iodine pills used to combat radiation sickness. The significance of the wooden ships is two-fold. They signify a return to a simpler more natural way of life, and wood also doesn't retain radiation as long as steel.

Got it , just saved it
Another band you might like that's in a very similar vein is America- Their most famous song is "Horse With No Name"- You've probably heard it somewhere
Soon as ivread the title , a tune popped in my head , still will react to make sure if its the tune i think
Aftermath of nuclear war, my guess is that the silver people are military in hazmat suits.
"Teach Your Children" a must listen
That's a great one.
Got it
@Tom Waits
'Woodstock' was written by Joni, 'WS' was written by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Paul Kantner.
@Tom Waits
You're welcome. It's an easy mistake to make because of the shared similarities: WOODstock, WOODen Ships.
Gotta check out Almost Cut My Hair by them.
For sure
David Crosby is crusty and unrepentant band and still communicates with his fans on twitter @thedavidcrosby . He survived drug addiction , a liver transplant, multiple heart stents, diabetes etc and toured until the pandemic shut him down at 79 years old. In He had a late renaissance with some good solo albums the last few years.
Lately people sends him pictures of their home rolled blunts and he critiques them.
Lighthouse and CPR are fantastic. Dave’s even been doing stuff with Snarky Puppy.
Wow
That's EXACTLY how I used to feel when I first heard the name, but then I bought the Woodstock album, and realised how brilliant they are and I've loved them ever since.
I’d say on your own, watch this live at Woodstock.
The sound is all the genius of Stephen Stills...
Hope we get to see the art you make!
Great reaction to a great band. Definitely a band worth diving into.
Oh my Abra, I am so glad you found out what many of us older folks found out a long time ago. This group is multi-talented - lyrics, harmonies and arrangements. Thanks for this memory.
I'm loving the era , wish i had a time machine
It's in my top 10....top 5 of all times. It takes you somewhere you've never been before every time you listen to it.
People meeting up after WWIII
"Oh shit".......about says it all brother, soundtrack of my youth right here....
I will ✌
Great reactions, from an Old Hippy from the Sixties to a young Hiphop Head. We can share this magic.
Agreed , i feel like i missed out
Neil Young is not on 'Wooden Ships,' which is on the first album, 'Crosby, Stills & Nash' ; the second album, 'Deja Vu,' is Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. As well, it was written by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane, who also recorded a version for their album 'Volunteers.'
This is from the mind of David Crosby. Vocals from both David and the great Stephen Stills. Some great, great music.
Great song and mood.
Maybe from the Revolutionary War time? Coat, Wooden ships, who won..... We are leaving, you don't need us.
Crosby stills Nash, one if my list favorite groups of the 70's. That sound gives me goose bumps still. Great song!
Indeed
Here are a couple lines you might like from "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. "Fear is the lock and laughter the key to your heart." and "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now." I first heard those lines over fifty years ago and I still randomly think about them now and then. "Wooden Ships" is a song written at the time of the Viet Nam war and is about people surviving a nuclear apocalypse. The "silver people" mentioned in the song are people on the shore wearing radiation suits.
I should have gotten that about the silver people , totally get it now
CROSBY STILLS NASH AND YOUNG...
Miss Elizabeth has excellent taste. Love this jam. You should check out the Woodstock videos of these fellas. OOOORIGHT ✌☮
For the longest time I thought this was about two civil war soldiers, meeting at the end of the war., on their way home! 🤔😂😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 one of my favorite groups. In my top five all time!
Neil Young's signature choppy guitar licks
