None of this makes fiscal sense in the current environment. WDW has surface parking lots because they have the land and it is extremely cheap compared to garages which have very limited capacity. Disney Springs has garages since they want to maximize shipping area vs parking...value versus non-value. Universal has garages since, again, they do not have the land. As someone else stated, an automatic car retrieval system will NEVER happen not only due to technology issues (ever have your phone Bluetooth drop out?), the queue waiting for their car, but also the sheer cost of it. Michael, the corporation just laid off 28,000 cast members and cancelled all parties and events due to not only COVID but the cost to staff. They are not doing anything of value for the next 5-10 years or until the profit margin gets back to where it was in January.
So... Park closing at the end of the night over 20,000+ guest are all going to call their cars to come pick them up at a covered waiting area by the front of the park... 🤔🤔🤔🤦♂️😂😂 How long is that line going to be... 20,000 x 10mins pick up ... you might finally get picked up in 4 weeks...
Surface parking is such a blight. At Walt Disney World, the parking lots are bigger than the parks, it's just cheaper. If Disney ever did build a 5th gate, I think they should build garages on the far east side Magic Kingdom lot (Villans) and use the rest of the lot for the park. They can even build a Monorail station in the garage.
Automated parking, etc., just isn’t going to happen anytime soon. It will take a while for those type of cars to become mainstream. Look at the cost of the cars with the technology. Even the model 3, which is probably the cheapest to have it available, it’s an expensive option. Also Mercedes greatly limits where that technology can be used. Currently, not coming to the US anytime soon. I can see the solar panels added to the parking lots. That to me makes more sense. It’s a win/win for Disney, The upfront cost is expensive but it immediately starts to pay for itself in energy savings. Plus the upkeep is minimal. Heck, even on rainy days they are going to get power, and Florida just makes the most sense to do this. I can even see them shrinking the parking lot to a degree with just another level, putting the panels on the top floor, and then using the parking space for other things.

The cost of adding the software and hardware required for that level of automation is significantly higher than something like a backup camera. Solar panel covers over the lots makes alot of sense, if only for the fact that it will make adding car charging easier on a larger scale than what they currently offer.

I wish they'd lower the prices, which they should because your car is out baking in the sun. We don't go often enough to get AP's and that parking fee is a killer.
I don't think that's something we'll see in the parks for years and years and years. There are many things that would generate revenue for the parks quicker than updating the parking, so I think even if the technology is there within the next 5, 10, or 30 years, it'll take longer for that to be an investment in the park...But who knows!

We have a plan on what park we are going to on what day. Hopefully we pick the parks he will be at on the same day. We as a family spend a lot of time watching Micheals vlogs. He truly is inspirational for all of us. We listen to his recommendations for restaurants and a lot of times say” This place Micheal recommends”. Staying hopeful!!!!

It doesn't really work like the Mercedes clip he showed. You have to be within 200 feet to summon the Tesla. Not much point since you have to be so close. It isn't always accurate either & many have ran into other cars & even walls. There's some pretty funny videos of driverless Teslas blocking traffic because they don't know what to do.
Give it a few years and it will eventually be the standard to have auto parking, and eventually auto driving cars. Everything (planes, cars, trains, lawn mowers, etc.) will be automatic like in Wall-E.
