How to make a custom box for shipping freight

- Part of how I make a living is to manufacture the products I have designed. Many of them are odd sizes and shapes, so I need to create boxes for them to fit in so I can ship them nationwide. In the past I used a lot of tape, now this is what I do. I use FedEx and UPS to ship and this works well with these companies.
You can get a lot of supplies at Dollar Tree. They have trifold cardboard display boards, they are fairly large, roughly 3’X4’. You can make a box from it. And foam boards too (as extra cushion) for inside the box, if you are shipping glass or mirror. Thank you! I am far less afraid now to custom pack/ship fragile, large items!
Love how the chicken just walks right in
Thank you so much, this was very helpful. I'm shipping a painting that is 40"X48" and it would be really expensive to have a custom box made. I found huge sheets of cardboard that are 48"X60" at U-Line for $2.71/sheet. Since they are a wholeseller, I had to buy 10 which was only about $29 after taxes. Huge money saver! Just a tip if you need big cardboard slabs :) Thanks again!
Your video just saved me a lot of hassle. I have to ship a coffee table and could not find a box with the dimensions I needed. Thank you!
This is incredibly useful for shipping my art, thank you so much!!! Saved me a lot of money and hassle!
You might be able to use bicycle shipping boxes. Bike shops are usually happy to get rid of them.
Great idea about CONTACT CEMENT and DRYWALL JOINT KNIFE (spatula).
You can GOOGLE " Fanfold Corrugated sheets " I buy continuous folded corrugated sheets for my custom acrylic framing business. Acrylic sheets are as large as 48" x 48" Sometimes larger. It's not hard to just wrap the edges with cardboard and then wrap the acrylic picture frames for shipping. Also foam sheets 1/2" 4ft x 8ft from Lowes for under $12 can be used for extra impact cushioning. Foam cuts easily with a razor blade or even a tablesaw blade.
I’m a printing press operator. Go to your local large format sheetfed print shop and ask for their empty paper carton boxes. They should have 28”x40” 25”x38” and 24”x36”. They will have loads of boxes just waiting to be shipped off to the recycle factory free of charge.
great info- thanks for sharing! have made a few boxes recently and this video came in handy!!
I kinda like your idea about contact cement, I think you would do better to pour that quart (or half of it) into a gallon can, then you can use a brush and just leave the brush standing in the can with the lid on when done, no need to clean or throw it away. Thats how I kept mine when I used to do laminate tops. If glue gets on the handle, wrap a piece of paper around it to cover the sticky.
Thanks for the vid, helpful. Look at the rooster!
Nicely done!
The problem(s) with this is that anything that comes in contact with the cardboard is going to dent the item. You need at least 3 layers of carboard on all sides. Secondly you don't have to cut a box open to do this. Just get the correct size box and some cardboard sheets. Creasing the cardboard on the edge of a table requires no tools.
Very helpful. Thank you!!!
Good information...thanks for sharing!
me again- just wanted to share what may be a tweak to your already great sytem-
long story short, i was too lazy to hunt up my drywall knife- and i thought what might work even easier is a - - pizza cutter!
i got one at the $ store (after my box was done) and tried it on scrap- seems to work pretty good! just roll it along a straight edge.
However- if the cardboard is poor quality it will probably cut through the top layer. might be worth a try and you'll only be put $1. but stay away from your wife's pizza cutter : ) thanks again for the video : )
Thank you, I ship large paintings also, I usually leave my DNA with all the cuts I get on my fingers, lol
shipping a 1:12 scale doll house. Will try this. This is my last resort because I"m outa time. Hope it works.
Great Vid! Thankx!
When I tried to do this, the contact cement wasn’t sticking to the other side of the box, there was no hold it just flopped right back open. Any advice?
Did you do both sides and let it dry until tacky?
Thank you!!
This guy ain't wrapped too tight!
Contact cement!!! It may be the solution I have needed. Thanks!

I did it with the Woodglut plans.
Mine works too. I used woodprix plans and build it without any problems.
I heard very good opinions about the Stodoys plans.
