If I were to ask you how many continents there are you might think “what an easy question!” and if like me you are from the English speaking world you would say seven. but if you ask some people from elsewhere in the world you could be told as few as 5.
Why is that and what are the different models of thought? Watch this video and find out.

Why don’t any countries teach 4 continents? The America’s Afro-Eurasia Australia Antarctica If Africa Asia and Europe are joined together as one landmass why aren’t there any countries that teach that they are one continent?

I'm from Bolivia, and here we use the 5-6 system of continents. That's why we call the people from USA 'estadounidenses' and not 'americanos' because America includes all lands from Canada to Argentina.

I’m from Costa Rica and I was taught that there are 5 continents: Africa, America, Asia, Oceania and Europe. The 7 continent model is based on the different tectonic plates according to Wikipedia and other sites but this doesn’t make sense because Central America, Arabia, India and many other regions and countries have their own tectonic plates so then there would be more than 7 continents. The 5 and 6 continent models make more sense to me and you have to know the Panama canal doesn’t divide South and North America in the 7 continent model, the border between Colombia and Panama does. Also the Panama canal isn’t a natural land form. Many Organizations like Fifa and the Olympics consider the 5 continent model because the five rings of the Olympics logo represent 5 continents and Fifa does the world every four years in a different continent for example when they did it in Brazil it was considered the America World Cup not the South American World Cup.

In Latin America we don't count North and South America as two separate continents, we just call it America. So when I came to the USA I was confused why they said 7 continents.

That was why I was always so confused! In Costa Rica we are taught that there are 6 continents: America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and Antarctica. Actually, for a lot of people is kinda offensive that the US doesn't have another word in English other than "Americans" to refer to its citizens, since a big part of the continent/s believes that we are all one America and them calling themselves that way conveys that they are excluding the rest of the continent. I personally don't think like this, since I know that US citizens aren't calling themselves that to actively piss people off, but I still wish there were another word like "estadounidenses".
I'm from Brazil and here is the same, and I do feel offended by they calling themselves Americans not because they want to piss people off but because they know it does, a lot of "Americans" know that this term is excluding and simply don't wanna change it, they could call themselves US people, US citizens, UnitedStadians or even US Americans but they prefer to call themselves "Americans.

I was initially thought there are 5 continents, being: Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and America. Later during college the idea change and from then I know them as Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, America, Antarctica and Australia.

4 Continents. Culture is not an excuse to divide Africa, Europe, and Asia they are all connected theoretically you can walk from Cape Town SA all the way to Vladivostok Russia without encountering any ocean to stop you (No the Suez Canal doesn't count). The same can be said of North and South America, they are also connected you could walk from Buenos Aires Argentina to Nome Alaska without any ocean (again man made canals don't count)

North and South America are subcontinent. America is the continent. Look at the symbol of the olympic games. There is only 1 circle to represent America. A few mistakes:
-You used Ucrania to separate Europe from Asia, when actually they are divides by the Ural Mountains, splitting Russia in two.
- 2:50 Spain is not pronounced Speen, what the hell was that.
-The number of continents can actually vary from 3 to 11.

There are various english dialects and words (such as Spain) can be pronounced differently in each dialect

Funny how the video states that continents are subjective and there are different models depending on which countries use them and yet people in the comments insist that the model taught to them is objectively right.
I had an argument with a coworker about continents. She insisted calling Mexico part of South America since they have a similar culture. Then we would also call India and Pakistan its own continent, then if we go with that logic, make the Slavs have their own continent, Arabs would also want their own continent so Middle East.

In Norwegian we have two words: "Verdensdel" (world part); Europe, Asia, Afrika, North- and South-America and Oceania. Then we have continent; Eurasia, Africa, America and Antarctica. Two words - no problems!

The "Verdensdel" seems to correspond to what English-speakers called "continent", why Norwegian "continent" seems to work similar to what other speakers of such languages as Russian would called "continent".

I go by the 'four continent' model. To me it's the most consistent and logical. If we define a continent as a continuous landmass unbroken by water, then there are four continents: America, Afro-EurAsia, Antarctica, and Australia.
It's still arbitrary because there are many minor continents and there is no definite size between where one landmass becomes a continent or really big island.

I was born and raised in Greece. We learned about North and South America in school. Not one continent. The information given is either outdated or too modern. My father, who is also Greek and went to school in the 60s and 70s also learned it as being two continents.

In the uk and also in the us and also in many other places we are taught 7 continent but it is stupid and broken that’s why lots of people say 4

You can’t divide America into two continent at the moment you do so ur breaking the rule of a massland. America is a single land surrounded by water until the canal of panama but still a canal no an ocean. There’s not such thing as a north and South America.

Very great video. In the US we are taught there are 7 continents, same as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and some Western European countries; India, China, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore and English Africa.
Recently, France & Romania have acknowledged the 7 continents models.

Well, Antarctica is really an archipelago of islands under the ice, so if you only count large *land*masses, then you could ignore that one I guess.
In Dutch a continent is a very large landsmass bordered by the seas and ocean. I learnt there are 5 continents: America, Eurasia, Africa, Australia and Antarctica. I find this weird, because we don’t separate the Americas because of the Panama canal, but we do separate Africa and Eurasia because of the Suez canal.
There is however another word in Dutch called “werelddeel”, which translates to part of the world. Then we use the 7 listed in the beginning of the video.
These continents in Dutch also exclude islands. So Madagascar is not part of the continent of Africa, but it is part of the ‘part of the world’ of Africa
The canal of panamá was something made by humans. Not by nature. There is large river that make the construction of canal easier. I went to school in panama and Colombia and for us America is one continent no 2. USA just took the name from the whole continent for them.
In the US we learn 7, but I personally like the idea of 6 (combine Africa and Europe since they’re a giant landmass with no oceans or narrow isthmus to separate them).

just because its ice dosent mean its not a continet, antarctica is huge its bigger than europe so why wouldn't it be a continet?
North America, South America, Eurasia, Africa, Oceania, Antarctica. You can't make North and South America into a single continent then leave Africa separate from Eurasia because North and South America are separated by the Panama Canal and Africa is separated from Eurasia by the Suez Canal, meaning that your map has inconsistencies and therefore should be considered irrelevant.
