I hope wherever Richard is now, he knows that ‘Countdown’ is still going in 2021! The big 4-0 in November next year!
He would be so proud !
What a fabulous grand final.!!!
Richard Whiteley, not only the god of Countdown but also of Channel 4 when it initially launched back in 1982
I just noticed the "Challenge" logo is blurry, is that just to avoid getting a copyright strike?
WHAT A SEASON
Friday 27th September 1991
The Grand Champion of Countdown wins 20 LEATHER-BOUND GOLD-LEAF VOLUMES OF THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY WORTH OVER £4000
14:10 also SCAREDLY for eight

50-1=49
7-2=5
49x5=245
245+8=253

Wow what a grand final in series 22 of countdown that was and that is the best grand final ever between chris waddington and robert teuton.
When Richard Whiteley says 'thumbs up from Simon' at 22:02, I think he actually means 'thumbs up from Richard (Samson)'.
There used to be a lexicographer called Simon Mason, I guess Richard got them confused.
For that last numbers game, they should determine the winner by who gets 150 the most different ways. :) There's easily half a dozen.
I didn't get MALINGERS (should have; I'm a psychologist), but I did get REALIGNS for 8.
That last numbers game would be a lot trickier if you had to use all the numbers
24:54 I did:
100 x 7 = 700
3 x 9 = 27
2 / 2 = 1
700 - 27 - 1 = 672
27 September 1991
Another way they can do in the first numbers game
50 x 7 = 350
9 x 9 = 81
8 x 2 = 16
350 - 81 - 16 = 253
75 x 5 = 375
7 - 3 = 4 take it away = 371
Dramatic ending or what!
10 - 7 = 3 x 50 = 150
@Leeswinburn
Chris waddington did it in 29 seconds before the final was finished.
20th September 1991
9 * 3 = 27
27 - 5 = 22
75 - 22 = 53
53 * 7 = 371

WTF doing here?
75x5=375
9-7=2
375-2-2=371
100 x 7 = 700
9 x 3 = 27 take it away = 673
2/2 = 1 take it away = 672
