When I realized floating in the sea with miles of nothing underneath to save you, is like hanging from a helicopter, 10 miles in the air with no parachute. I didn't go in again.
    That & Jaws!

The ship was moving when this happened. Getting hit by ship is just as bad, or worse than getting hit by a car. Most probably they killed what they hit. They felt the impact, so whatever they did hit must’ve had serious mass.

The four foot cut might have been a split caused by the coating being punctured during the attack, and water flow during the transit back to port. Great video, and thanks for your work.

It was rubber adjacent material, yeah? Most of those types of materials from my experience will absolutely shred to thin strips if even punctured by a dull object that drags across the surface.

The hooks were analyzed by marine biologists with extensive experience studying large marine squids, and -- using the unusually large size of the hooks for estimation purposes -- they approximated the size of the squid that had gouged up the Stein's sonar dome at upwards of 100 feet long!
As others have mentioned, the Stein hadn't been operating in Antarctic waters, where the largest squid with tentacular claws lives, the Collosal squid, aka Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni lives, so the damage was most likely done by a particularly large species of squid still unknown to science.
One minor correction, but the man who spoke on camera about the damage was not Petty Officer Ira Carpenter.
His hat device consisting of a fouled anchor with two stars identifies him as a master chief, thus he would have been Master Chief Petty Officer Ira Carpenter.
I served on the last ship built of the class of ship that the Stein was part of, the Knox-class frigates, the USS Moinester (FF-1097).

I'm sure in the depth of the ocean, are many creepy and even dangerous creatures lurking about, we never heard of or will maybe even never discover, because of how hard it is to
explore the deep regions of the oceans.
personally, I am already afraid of murky lakes, when you don't know or see what's swimming around you but it would be a nightmare to me, to be alone, swimming in the sea.
    maybe even at night😮

Having a 'kraken' attack a US Navy frigate in the 70s must be like finding Jenny Greenteeth hanging out in the local community pool.

Tackar, väldigt intressant. Visste inte att jättebläckfiskar saknar klor. Personligen tror jag det var en väldigt stor kolossal bläckfisk.

3/4 of the earth is water. We know very little of what swims and crawls in the oceans. Could be anything including the squids mentioned. Captivating! Thanks! Go Pinnso!!!!

I remember a story about semi circular bite marks on submarines rubber outer skins a while back. Cookie cutter shark was the creature they attributed, created suction cup shaped wounds.

You never hear about what might cause gigantic species in the oceans. We have gigantism on land in all kinds of animals and people. The growth hormone isn't regulated due to thyroid problems and the pituitary gland. I don't see why the same can't happen in ocean creatures.

If they recovered a hook. Could they not perform measurements and compare to known species. Also these days we have DNA that could be compared. That would pretty much settle it.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that the top 5 most intelligent animals are apes and bonobos, cetaceans, dogs, corvids and…..octopodes and squid.
