When you're fighting with blunt replicas of historical swords, daggers, staves, etc., and you're free to move from side to side like in a real fight, that all falls under the umbrella of "Historical European Martial Arts", or "HEMA".
I can just see Cartoonz walking up to Delirious, pull a white glove out of his pocket and slap him across the face with it saying “ I challenge you to a duel!”
The move sets are based on HEMA Historical European Maritial Arts. Which were recorded in fencing treatises and manuals. It is a martial art you can practice. There is lots of content on UA-cam. What that means in terms of the HEMA mode is that you are using training swords and still hitting eachother but without the murder and or ambulance ride. Swordfighting but without the risk of death, so you still need to land a good hit to earn the point.

I've been enjoying the Hellish Quart videos from Toonz & Delirious b/c I grew up with the collaboration of Toonz & Delirious & this game is both amazing & intense. Also, the beginning of this video was so far the best start to a video from this series haha.

Synthetic refers to a hard polymer (plastic) sword that is safer to fight with in practice because the polymer obviously doesn't have an edge, and is normally lighter than metal. HEMA stands for "Historical European Martial Arts", which, when you are going full power, you wear protective gear and use non-sharpened metal swords. It's how we practice sword fencing (yes, every form of a sword duel is considered fencing, not just rapiers) without actually injuring or killing each other. Makes for lots of fun with maybe a little bit of bruising, and you get to feel like a knight. :D

I love the realism of this game! Most sword fights are this short and when people get stabbed their muscles retract rather than continuing the fight.
