  • Updates on my cabin workshops. Setting up my new off grid homestead for a self sufficient lifestyle. I started this journey by building a tiny cabin in the woods that I used as a hunting camp. Now that the addition is put on, I'm getting my workshops in place so that I can work from home and enjoy a simple life of self sustainability.

    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

14x24 is the size of the building I had delivered on my 20acres for my retirement home. I did not elect to get their windows because I wanted better quality then they offered. Thanks for another great video, you have no idea how much your videos help me get away from the things I'm dealing with. It allows me a nice mental escape, thank you.

The Boss definitely knows how to live and enjoy life. I’m getting the wheels in motion to leave the “city” life and live more like the Boss. I’ve always wanted a simple lifestyle in the woods, just being in a cabin and chopping wood. God bless you and yours!

I love your passion and motivation. I was born and currently live in Florida but my Dad's family is from upstate New York and as a result I've spent a lot of time in the southern Adirondacks. I have a lot of dreams about living like this. My friends and family here ridicule me for wanting such a lifestyle but when I'm in the mountains I feel alive, I'm truly free.. Breathing clean air, watching the fireflies at night, admiring the stars, hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening... All the things I love but can't do here in my deed restricted neighborhood surrounded by urban sprawl, smog and bumper to bumper traffic.. Someday soon I hope I'll get there.. Thanks for the videos.

JC - I think the ideas you presented on why it makes sense to have the building up by the road for your "business" (Some kind of food related venture??) makes COMPLETE sense to me. I've scanned the art prints, etc. from the site you forwarded and I think it is impressive. I imagine the "business" will also be so. I enjoy the fact that you follow 'THE MEAT TRAPPER" and just wanted to say that both of you are people that LOTS of younger folks need to listen to and think about the ideas / attitudes/ experience / skills / etc . you men discuss. I really like your art, but I just LOVE your videos! I look forward to all you publish. I was lucky that I worked at something for nearly 40 years that I enjoyed...and that made it possible for me to raise my kids "off the grid" even though I left our cabin in our woods here in Indiana every morning and worked for a VERY large Company all day. KEEP THEM COMING...I'D LOVE TO SHARE A BEER WITH YOU BEFORE I CHECK OUT!

Good job on seeing things through. JC you actually helped me put things in perspective recently. I've wanted a hunting cabin my whole life, along with many other wants, and may possibly have the opportunity after this year to buy a friend's place. I decided to quit wishing and do something about it by picking my side job back up and getting my finances in order so that if I have the chance I can jump on it. I'm truly happy in the woods and want to see my kids and perhaps their kids someday have a place to enjoy in the outdoors. Truly enjoy your videos, thank you sir.

I love it when we "Live the Dream" I did some of that a while back, and like you, I'm finally ready to go the extra mile, to finish up on my "Living the Dream" too! I was quite shocked at how much I actually got done, when I took a very good look at my place. I also kept one of my properties separate from my cabin, and although I am not sure what I will do with that yet, single use or multiple, I'm sure when I move there, It will all fall into place. I have only 3 small jobs to finish before I can move in for good, but I am on my way too. It's SO GOOD to have a dream, and actually live it. So encouraging for me, and so many others. Thank you, Sheila

Boss...This is my first time commenting. I love your channel -- watch it all the time! Frankie's my favorite:) With Thanksgiving approaching, I wanted to share with you something I saw on a local educational channel here, a new way to fix a turkey. Purchase about a 13-15 gallon aluminum trash can and burn it off to remove any residue, etc. on the can. Place a large sheet of aluminum foil on a level, clear piece of ground. Take a wood stake and cover it completely, including the top end, with aluminum foil and then stick the stake into the center of the foil that is on the ground. Salt and pepper a turkey that is no larger than 13 pounds both inside and out. Place the turkey on top of the stake, legs down. Place the trash can over the turkey. Place a layer of hot coals on top of the can, then another layer around the outer bottom edge of the can on the foil. In about 90 minutes remove the can, put a thermometer in the turkey to be sure it is 165-170 degrees -- and you should have a perfectly done, smoked turkey! Works like a convection or Dutch oven and doesn't mess up the kitchen and keeps the stove free for other things. Looked delicious!
