Thanks! Totally miss seeing your homestead! I’ve been a follower for a long time- when y’all were in the camper looking for your homestead! I do enjoy seeing your hard work and sacrifice! Miss seeing the kids grow too- but totally get why you don’t show them anymore! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Way to go!

Hi Eric! Good seeing the homestead. On this Memorial Day, we thank you for your service to our country🇺🇸.
You gave your maple trees a year of rest. It was certainly a strange year for tapping maple trees. It was extremely early and was on again off again style. I remember how much you all loved the maple syrup!!!!!
Thank you for sharing this video.

I LOVE our woodstove. It keeps our house warm...sometimes too warm. But, we also have a furnace. In the spring when the days are warm but cold at night we use it in the morning for an hour or so. This takes the chill off the house until the sun comes up.

Hi Eric. A little advice about the tractor. ideally it should be under a roof, the sun dries out the tires, hoses, etc. which is expensive to fix. If it sits outside, at least put an empty 5 gal. pail over the shifter. Otherwise when it rains, the water runs down the stick and gets into the hydraulic oil causing huge problems. Your place has a lot of potential! Thanks for sharing!

Oh I am glad you are showing your homestead and poultry. And you are a medical man and so know biology. Now l.never heard anywhere that sulfa is used to treat respiratory issues. About 1954 when l was a teenager l had a small chicken 🐔 farm and egg 🥚 route. ln those days we never heard of bird flu. From time to time l would have a hen with respiratory problems and my mother would bring the ill hen into our basement and cure her with sulfa and each time another hen was cured and back into the flock she went. And for good or bad that is the story told for information purposes only

I know they're growing in leaps and bounds, spiritually, mentally, and physically) I understand you and Ashley's reason for the protection of your family. When you both stated why, sometime back I didn't. Wasn't aware of what was going on at that time here in southwest Ohio and then... WOW. I understand.

HELLO LADIES! And guys too. Calling in from lovely Hamtramck this post dawn morning. Great property! Love that blue coop. Go ladies! Great video.
I dont know if your garden plot is dampish or not. I will assume, as is Michigan, a mixed lot. Hmm. Mom, the farmer says, clear out that brush and trees and till the ground. Many plants crops do fine on fresh tilled ground. Others do not. You also need to think obout shade, you know this as you are smart folk, but hours of that direct sunlight. With larger lands you can have different plots or fields. Some for those berries, others for the more grain and tubers. Frankly a orchard of well drained soil is what mom thinks. Apples, cherries and peaches. They come on at different times and four trees of each will provide your growing tribe with pleanty.
Dad says to get some goats and clear it out this year. He likes hogs better for clearing and many people love to buy free range hogs. Define the boundaries with fence and let them prepare the ground for you. They feel a double purpose for everything is a good idea. And yes, in hard times we ate our pets.
In the early 70s, we had some milk cows and a couple bulls. More for milk and pets and permanent residents. Times got bad. It was winter. One bull was named Buford. He was older and a favorite. At dinner one night dad and mom told us we had to sell the cows and the hogs. We just needed the money very very badly. Farming equals poverty mostly. The next day we watched the hobby farm guys come and get the livestock. Buford did not go. We figured it out before mom and dad told us. We were down to little grain and hay. Buford was slaughtered the next day. As was the one hog left. We kept the sow as she was full of piglets. My oldest brother did the kill shot. He was loved till the end. We butchered him that week. I was wearing my new leg braces. Mom was able to take us to the dentist too. dad gave the remaining hay to the neighbors up the hill. Their horses were starving. Nothing sadder than a starving horse. I remember waking up one morning. In the good neighbors, pasture the one horse dying. The oldest girl had his head on her lap, crying. It had become spring by then. My tough mom went over and sat with her to console her. He had been eating the fresh grass. He was skin and bones, but had made the winter. For a long time she sat there as her sisters joined her. Us guys went over to say we were sorry.. He long hair covering her face and the horse as he had died. Later she would thank us for helping to feed them Dad was always coming across a deal for old hey. It just was not enough.
That winter we would have school friends come over. They were amazed on how well we ate. Steaks and roasts every night. The freezers were full of Buford, the hog and chickens. Meat every night. Before we ate, we thanked Buford for his gift to us. I was still sad. I told my mom we should eat the neighbors next time. She looked at me and said, "they would be pithy meat and taste bad." Everyone laughed as they got the joke. I did too eventually. Buford was a great guy. He gave us lots.
In that ground I would clear asap and put in a set grain Not to late for corn. Have you thought of tobaco? It will grow in Michigan. Good time to put in next years crops too. As you are in a cooler climate maybe a small pond in the low part. Like in Chile, the traditional way is to have a little pond and put trees and crops around it. Acts as a heat source and micro system environment. I would mound and put in a few rows of potatoes also. Or let goats or hogs run wild.
To all my friends out there. Buy land now. I am already seeing the refugees from the big cities of the east and west coming to Michigan and the middle. Most want homes. But, the big parcels are being carved up. Tax sales, whatnot. Little plots can feed you a lot. Good luck. Great vid
