Thanks Nelson for fixing up this great, and I mean great, instrument... I've owned a lot of Stratocasters, this one is my favourite one. It's effortless to play and the tone is outstanding. This demo doesn't do it justice... I'm blown away on this one. 😍 There's something so cool about owning a great playing and sounding guitar that's over 25 years old and inspires you to want to create new music. 😘
Richard Gallo hey Richard, I noticed that your Strat has a neck plate stamped "FENDER". These plates are off the original 84-87 Japanese Fenders, but you have your serial number at the base of the neck heel, which denotes a newer production date.
Good job, one suggestion, in the future insead of someone stating the guitar was noiseier before and it's much quieter now... perhaps let us hear the noise, then do the shielding, then compare the two?
Woodeso's Guitar Mods I scored a 1977 Greco Les Paul standard law suit made in Japan a while back . I payed 450 for it with shipping from Japan . Comparing this guitar with a real Gibson they are damn near identical twins. I can see why this particular guitar would be called a lawsuit. Open book head stock right down to the correct bridge post . Very nice guitar for the money . Some guys will tell you the Japanese fenders from around the mid 80s through 90s were built better then the American ones. Nice strat you got there ..
Vintage 30 from 1984 to 1987 Japanese Fenders were the only ones. When Fender changed owners the sale didn't include the Fullerton plant so production was moved to Japan until the Corona plant came online starting with a small volume run of historic reissues in 1987. Full production resumed in the USA in 1988. I have a December 1987 Fender Custom Telecaster '62 reissue and it is amazing to play and it's workmanship is second to none. It's coming up to 30 years old at Christmas and it will still be going in another 30 years, it'll outlived me.
Great video, again, that's why I subscribed your channel. But a demo of the noise before would have been great, there is only the result for the viewer, not the way it was like before.
That Strat looks awesome. Those old Japanese Fenders are really killer instruments, but I was chuckling knowingly when you had the issues pulling the pickguard off of the body (been down that road with my MIJ Strat many times!). I'm still trying to find a middle position pickup that sounds as good as the stock one sounded (getting very, very close with a Lollar, but I still never should've yanked it!). Richard needs to hold on to that one!
Richard has good taste, Nelson has got great talent. And when you combine taste with talent, you get a kick ass rock n roll good time guitar. Woodeso guitar mods is where it's at. Good video
Fender Japan guitars -- even the lowest price point versions -- have always been quality instruments. The top-end ones that never leave Tokyo are better than anything made in the USA...
I finally broke down and got a 57 reissue CiJ Strat in Old Candy Apple Red and i instantly fell in love with Fender Japan. In addition to my Mexican Standard Strats from 2006 in Blizzard Pearl and 2008 in Candy Apple Red, that 57 Strat is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.
Out of the Japanese Fender Reissue models, the 62 reissue is hands down the best. Cosmetically its way more appealing than the 57ri and 72ri and the pickups are underrated good.
Hey is was just thinking for reducing the waste on shielding, why not use the cut out pup parts from the scratchplates for the pup holes in the body? Either way a really stunning guitar.
I have a 1986 Japanese Squier strat (e series), have you ever worked on or played one? I find it's better then my 1996 mim strat, but then I also have 1998 squier jagmaster (Vista series) that I wouldn't part with for the world, something about them Japanese guitars
I also have an E series..I’ve just upgraded the pick ups to 69 Fe dear Custom Shop and it sings..I’ve had the guitar since 1993 and it’s stunning to play. Also shielded it which has made a great difference
Hi. How do you deal with the truss rod screw being inaccessible? Should I ask a luthier to route between the neck pickup cavity and the neck joint cavity? I've got this same MIJ strat. Thanks for the tutorial!
Around 6:30 into the video the look at the bridge pickups ? it's backwards & i don't think you would get the pickguard to fit properly with the pickup positioned like that . so i figured it was corrected & left out of the video . MIJ guitars are great quality
Just a suggestion here. You said the guitar was making a shit ton of noise prior to shielding. Next time you do a shielding job can you do a before part in the video? Film the noise prior to shielding so the difference can be heard?
excuse me mr.tim..are u' inserting a new wire ground?in the volume switch, how about old wire ground that conected to guitar body in the same place.i meant by volume switch..
Nice job. That guitar looks like my brothers Japanese 80’s Squier, built by handpicked parts. The Swedish luthier who built it allways used the best parts. Is it true that japanese Squiers in the 80’s was better than the Fenders? Some say that. I don’t know.
Hey, Nice demo and thanks. I'm probably gonna shield my MIM Strat soon. I'm a bit confused with what you did at around 5:00 Did you connected the Trem ground to volume pot's ground? and that extra wire you soldered, is it connecting the copper shielding and the volume pot's ground? Really helpful to know, thanks. (:
Chris Franklyn I got mine on amazon and it worked a treat. You would have to glue down kitchen foil which would be messy but this worked very well for me 👍 KING DO WAY Copper Foil Tape Guitar EMI Shielding Adhesive Barrier ( 20M x 30MM) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01G4QUTWM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_p1OyzbWPDTB0D
Yeah he's right.. copper shielding on Amazon is cheap. If you're on Prime.. it'll get to you in no time. You can absolutely use aluminum duct tape from the home improvement store, you just can't solder to it, but it does the same job. You need to connect it to ground just the way I did here.
I just use my soldering iron for shrink tubing. Just use the part closer to the handle thats not as hot and rub that over the tubing a few times and done.
TimB4305 I have a 1991 62 reissue and a 1994 54 reissue, and both came with lower grade pots and switch. Both have been upgraded, and are superb instruments.
Thats one nice guuitar i have the 57 mij just finesed insalling plate so far watched 2 grest vedios yours for a 62 abd onther 57ri...i guess that sheilding from the factory dud not cut it.RocknRollflat5
How to tune your guitar in 3 easy steps............ Then put guitar in hands of somebody that can play........ Plugged into a worthy amp........ etc etc etc
it never fails to rip my knitting when i see a guitar in this price range that hasnt been shielded. its about 10p worth of tape and takes 5 minutes. even if they used paint I would be happy, but to have nothing at all is totally unacceptable.

Man i love to watch you work. You are damn good at what you do. You make it look so easy.
Thanks man.. started teaching myself right where you are 4 years ago:-)

I MEAN THAT
What a beautiful Strat.
Great video, again, that's why I subscribed your channel.
But a demo of the noise before would have been great, there is only the result for the viewer, not the way it was like before.
Great vid. Richard sounds awesome. It's got a great bluesy sound

Remember when Japanese Fenders were looked down on? Funny how things change!

Your videos are surprisingly entertaining.

good call
Much neater then when i do mine. Thumbs up!!
Dude - I love the way you button everything up on the inside even though it's hidden. F**king Pro.
What a nice guitar.
Thanks Nelson for another great upload. I have to ask. Is there a reason you don't use the electric string winder anymore?
Makes too much noise on video;-)
Thanks Nelson !!! :-)
You seem really handy with the electronics ...ever thought about taking on an effect pedal kit?
Hey Nelson... Good to see you.
I have a 1986 Japanese Squier strat (e series), have you ever worked on or played one? I find it's better then my 1996 mim strat, but then I also have 1998 squier jagmaster (Vista series) that I wouldn't part with for the world, something about them Japanese guitars

very good test the sound it's super
beautiful!!!
Good work. Nice clean job.
looks like a sweet guitar! glad you had fun shielding :P
Fantastic job!! Should have twisted the three pickups and out put jack wires. Cheers
Such a cool axe and find... Nice sound... 👍
The pots connect to the aluminum,,,why you put a cable between the aluminum and the pot?
Thanks, this is a very good informative & entertaining video. cheers !
The bridge pickup was installed backwards ,I guess that was edited as it probably wouldn't fit ....................Great video man .
What do you mean ?
Around 6:30 into the video the look at the bridge pickups ? it's backwards & i don't think you would get the pickguard to fit properly with the pickup positioned like that . so i figured it was corrected & left out of the video . MIJ guitars are great quality
"*sighs* and now we gotta pull all this fucking bullshit apart". LOL.
Nice amps!!
Just a suggestion here. You said the guitar was making a shit ton of noise prior to shielding. Next time you do a shielding job can you do a before part in the video? Film the noise prior to shielding so the difference can be heard?
No shit. Useless vid
excuse me mr.tim..are u' inserting a new wire ground?in the volume switch, how about old wire ground that conected to guitar body in the same place.i meant by volume switch..
he also kept that one that is your main ground, the new one grounds the shielding
Nice job. That guitar looks like my brothers Japanese 80’s Squier, built by handpicked parts. The Swedish luthier who built it allways used the best parts. Is it true that japanese Squiers in the 80’s was better than the Fenders? Some say that. I don’t know.

It's the same thing what i have watched in stewmac, they put an extra wire:)
Buzz Kill! Great job, and love the channel.
Are you grounding to only the shielding tape or is that in addition to grounding to the claw?
I own one - still the best Strat I've ever had
Need to ask... where did you get the copper tape from? I got some from L&M, just enough to complete the job...
what do you do with the hole that the wires go through?
when you shield do you always connect another ground from the shielding ?
I wish I could send you my guitar to do a video on
I've got a guitar that could benefit from this, do you need special copper? tape. Or can you just raid the kitchen for some aluminium foil?
Chris Franklyn I got mine on amazon and it worked a treat. You would have to glue down kitchen foil which would be messy but this worked very well for me 👍

Oh nice, thanks. Doing an amazon order as we speak anyway. Ta!
Yeah he's right.. copper shielding on Amazon is cheap. If you're on Prime.. it'll get to you in no time. You can absolutely use aluminum duct tape from the home improvement store, you just can't solder to it, but it does the same job. You need to connect it to ground just the way I did here.
Got Prime. Can't live without Prime. Prime is existence. :)
Tom Corr no US shipping. That sucks.
This is one kind of buzz kill that guitar players like ;-)
Richard is getting better and better at his playing , if he wasnt spending so much time pursueing guitars he would have been the next Hendrix :D
Eb711 um..no
who's that the next george hendrix ?
No more blow dryer, I saw you finally got a heat gun (Instagram pic).
I just use my soldering iron for shrink tubing. Just use the part closer to the handle thats not as hot and rub that over the tubing a few times and done.
run the barrel of the soldering iron along it or heatshink , faster , better
Nice job on the shielding though.
pro job
What is the year of manufacture? The pots and switches are better quality than those fitted to many MIJ 'reissues'.
William Glover this is a 1991-1992 according to the serial number
TimB4305 I have a 1991 62 reissue and a 1994 54 reissue, and both came with lower grade pots and switch. Both have been upgraded, and are superb instruments.
William Glover absolutely, they are exceptional quality.
don't I need to do the same in the back cavity? thanks
Not at all, since in the trem cavity there's no electronic components.
Thats one nice guuitar i have the 57 mij just finesed insalling plate so far watched 2 grest vedios yours for a 62 abd onther 57ri...i guess that sheilding from the factory dud not cut it.RocknRollflat5
sooooo....how come nobody this century's heard of the twisted pair ?
can't you solder strait to the copper ?
didn't see you ground the p-gard copper
When the cover is put back on it touches the other overlapped foil on the body.
How did you stain the pickup covers, tone and volume knob?
Time! My jap fender is 25 years old now and looking very yellow on the plastic parts that have been exposed to the light.
Same Japanese Strat as I have
Nice.
What alnico are the pickups
Jamie Spinks ALNICO II
Woodeso what state do you live in?
LONE WOLF1 he lives in Canada, Ontario I believe
sorry about my question,i meant sent it to woodeso's....answear please,
How to tune your guitar in 3 easy steps............
Then put guitar in hands of somebody that can play........
Plugged into a worthy amp........
etc etc etc
You could have installed a 'dummy' coil that would have killed all of the noise.
I hope you had the owner's permission to add extra holes to their guitar. Just solder to the copper shielding.
If you guys like the fender japanese "reissue" 62 strat, there's a demo of a nice one in my channel
clearly you watch AvE, ...looks like a skookum choocher to me
hi,woodeso's guitar mods...
"Nixon-dings", eh...?
it never fails to rip my knitting when i see a guitar in this price range that hasnt been shielded. its about 10p worth of tape and takes 5 minutes. even if they used paint I would be happy, but to have nothing at all is totally unacceptable.
Being faithful to the original 62 spec. shielding would not be fitted.

Stikibits ah generalization, we meet again.
I hated when foreigners rip my country, especially when they're right.
