    Thank you for another clear, informative video. So sorry for the storm damage, but it’s always encouraging to remember, just like the plants, God helps us weather storms in life and come back stronger. You are so right-when you grow tomatoes you always want extra to share. That’s the best part of gardening.

    Whenever I grow tomatoes in containers, I use the 5-gallon buckets, as they allow the plants to get even bigger, and produce more fruit. Also, a little trick I learned to maximize fruit quantity takes place during the pollination phase. I went to the grocery store and bought a really cheap children's battery powered toothbrush. Using the backside of the head of the toothbrush, turn it on, point the flower downward, and touch the toothbrush to the stem, just above the flower. This gives more complete pollination than would be attained just by bees or other insects. You get almost 100% pollination success. It's time-consuming, but if you're growing cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes, the production increase is well worth the time spent. Another trick is when a tomato fruit has been damaged by insects or animals: cut away the damaged part, and scrape out the seeds. They can be used to start new plants, thus avoiding a total loss. Cust a slice of the tomato fruit about 1/4 inch thick. Put it in the soil, and when it sprouts, thin it out to the healthiest one. One final comment/suggestion is for when the plant has finally died. Tomatoes are notorious for using up a lot of the nutrients in the soil, and it's usually recommended that you use a different part of the garden each year. If crop rotation isn't easily or readily available, you can take the dead plants (minus any dirt from the roots), throw them into an old blender, and puree them up. Spread the pureed mixture back into the soil for the next generation of plants, and reclaim the nutrients. If the plants were really large, you could put them through a wood chipper first, and then blender the final results. I'll say a prayer for the two of you, for continued gardening success in your new Florida homestead. - George

    I really do love ❤️ your all’s channel!!! I’m having a marathon gardening channel watching your all’s videos. I can’t wait to get started. Do you all grow tomatoes 🍅 and peppers inside ? I have never done that. I’m worried about those nasty 🤮 gnats. Even with the soilless soil. I’m afraid my cats are going to get into it. I usually put in containers to grow certain things. Is it to late to plant the seeds for tomatoes 🍅 and peppers ? That is a great 😊 idea to grow some on the patio as well. I think 🤔 I revived a tomato 🍅 plant last year one of them and it was nice to walk on the deck and do that

      Gerhard Braatz - They did, but they filmed lots of videos so we would have stuff to watch while they are setting up their new homestead in Florida. BTW, they did post a tour of their new Florida place, so take a look on their channel... ☺️

    Where would I aquire bamboo poles? Are they better than the cages?

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  4 роки тому +1

      We have some on our Amazon Storefront on the about tab of our channel. I use the canes to support my seedlings in the wind. After the plants get mature and the stems and stalks are strong enough to survive wind then I remove the canes and save them for reuse

    we had a miniature chi and didn't feed her dog food we bought a rotisserie chicken every week and fed her that, our Vet told us that we needed to feed her dog food, that chicken was to much protein and could shut her kidneys down over time. So brother beware and discuss it with your vet. lots of veggies would be different.

    Absolutely love how you guys do how to videos from start to finish in one video (spanning weeks or months) with links to videos that have all the details (example the soil reclaiming like this one) as well as failures and how to deal with them. Really informative, don't have to wait for another video or try to hunt down multiple parts, really excellent! Sending your link to friends all the time!

    I just want to say I love you guys, and you are truly an answer to my prayers as I lost my parents young and have always wished I could go back and get some much needed info and learning on planting vegetables as they were amazing farmers. You are a blessing. May God's grace and mercy be with you always.

      So sorry for your loss Susan. My Daddy was born and raised on a farm in Georgia. My Mother was an experienced gardener as well. They are both in Heaven too. Me and Nancy will help you with your garden but I’m like you, I wish so often I could ask my Daddy questions about gardening and farm animals. Peace to you Susan❤️

    Do you fertilize your tomatoes any time during the growing season? I used your potting mix combination for planting in containers.

    @kathleenambrose877 5 років тому +3

    Hey, Hollis, could you pinch off the early suckers on these and root them so that after the mother is done fruiting you could replace with the rooted suckers? Always seems a shame to just call it quits for the season on those determinate tomato plants.
