This is when I became a diehard Tool fan. I love all of their stuff, but especially this album. When bands are first breaking, they seem to create their best material.
Ya Jerk Off became one of my favorite tracks after the month of horror a roommate was causing....what a disaster of a human being he was
Possibly, but maybe we just associate it as the best because it’s the material we hold dearest to us.
Early stuff is just more raw and undefined it’s a thing of beauty ….✌🏻
To be honest, I think "Lateralus" is their best material, because to me, it is one of the greatest records ever recorded.
@@Xuimaki I think this is how people decide which Tool album is "better" or " best" just personal bias.
To me which ever tool album I'm listening to is my favorite for that time and the change with my mood.
Tool is a band that can do no wrong in my eyes. I love their entire catalog. It's cool how their music got more intricate and complicated with each album, but this one is still my favorite! I went through some weird dark times one winter shortly after this was released and I would listen to it over and over while sitting in front of my fireplace and getting lost in the flames. Mixed bag of emotions when I hear it now but still love it!!
With the distinct bass line and Maynard's vocals, I can always tell it's Tool.
Musicians usually have 10-15 years to craft a first album with no pressure. Once you make it you have to come up with another one every 2 years on a deadline - some musician, I forget
Ironically this is the album with the first bassist Paul D'Amour and not Justin Chancellor. I definitely agree with you that it has that fat thick distinct Tool sound, it's just interesting how they were able keep that tonally consistent with two different bassists

Brad is a sturdy rock and Lex is the wind, water and fire that dances around her sturdy rock. Brad processes the music and Lex feels it. ✌️
I love Tool, Danny Carrey is a beast on the drums and Maynard just has this great vocal range and interesting style. I'm loving just watching Lex vibe to this.
"Prison Sex' from the same album is one of my all time favorites. The bass and drums are just so thick. *Adult themes warning if you decide to react to it.

@@SoulTripChuck not karma. Its abt the chain of abuse. Children sexually abused are more likely to become abusers themselves but the song is about breaking the chain of abuse.
Tool is amazing. Been a huge fan since the 90s and this is my second favourite album of theirs after Enima. Crawl Away and Swamp Song are great songs to check out too.
tool has been my favorite band since I first heard their opiate album way back in the early 90s. in my opinion they have never made a bad song.
This album is very raw compared to their highly polished later work. I'd love it if they made another album like this one.
Wow Undertow? So glad to see you reacting to songs that aren’t “main stream“! I spent hours and hours practicing this song on the drums in high school when it first came out. So fun to play!
My older brother's friend got me into Tool back in high school. He could play guitar and sing just like Maynard, hitting and holding the notes. He pulled so much fine trim for an average looking chud.
TOOL is that rare band that i found in my younger angrier days, then as i aged they got less and less angry as did I. Every album release seemed to perfectly fit where my temperment in life was at the current time. Another band that went from super angry to more of a feel good mellower vibe (but still rocks hard) that i grew up with is CLUTCH, yall need to react to more Clutch, 1 song is not even a drop in the bucket of their vastly varying sound.

It’s about addiction. Plain and simple. How starting out, it seems like it makes everything better, then eventually it takes a dark turn and drags you down and gets so tough that it seems impossible to escape. And even though you can see it’s making you feel so bad, you still do it for that little glimpse of euphoria. I highly recommend having the lyrics pulled up while or before listening and the concepts of the songs will make more sense and likely will result in you having a better experience with the songs. Try to have yourself a great rest of your day!

So Good, Undertow was the album that really introduced me to Tool, and me and my friends played it over and over.Brad you really should of done the lyric video for this one.

This is early Tool, shorter/angrier songs, ha! Some prefer this vibe of their sound but I like the later stuff, it jibes more with my spiritual/seeking side, ha. But angry Maynard really fits the bill when I'm in a certain mood or mindset.

Lex almost hit it but just barely missed It's about being on the heroin nod, he's nodded off and now he's trapped in the Undertow and unable wake up, It's also about trying to get get clean but relapsing.

Of all the bands you really ought to make sure you have lyrics for, (especially
if you have trouble hearing/understanding the words in a song), Tool is on top
of the list.

It's very hard to find lyric videos of the modern songs. The videos are getting removed by the rights holders more and more. Tool lyric vods seem to be all nut gone now.

Flood is the appropriate song to follow listening to Undertow as in explains that once the goal Maynard was trying to reach in this song was reached it turns out not to be the Rock that Maynard thought he was clinging to
Just about my favorite Tool album
Early 90’s working in a machine shop was the first time hearing Tool. Fan ever since.
The undertow is the pull of addiction. In my opinion. The entire album is a struggle with abuse and addiction.
I always understood this song to be about addiction (heroin?) -- first verse hes praising how great it is, and 2nd verse hes singing only half the praise of it. By the end he is telling himself that he is euphoric, when it sounds like he isn't convinced.

Have you ever done any Porcupine Tree, they have some great songs! They split up around 2011 but now have a new album coming out! They are prog and Steven Wilson is lead singer and has had his own prolific solo career. The live version of their song "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" is better even than the audio version, they always sound fantastic live.
I really wish that Brad would do the lyric video for Blackest Eyes, they are an awesome band and Steven Wilson is very talented
I'd also like to see them do some The Mars Volta but Brad's head may explode
YES to Porcupine Tree!!! I like Tool, but Porcupine Tree is one of my top 5 favorite bands - incredible musicianship and Gavin Harrison is one of the greatest drummers of all time (Neil Peart was a fan)

Damn, YES. Unfortunately, they (almost always) only react to songs which win the stream polls. And most of their voters seem to prefer the mid-era music of the Pretenders more. Crazy I know, but there it is.

Wow! I really dig this song. I don't think I've heard this one. How did I miss it?
The brilliance of this song is how the lyrical theme matches the music composition and flow... Both of which depict the addiction flow.

Nothing matches the 1st high
And the flow - high/come down/despair/high/come down/despair
The flow lyrically and musically matches that pattern... Brilliance!
"left-right walking - tumble - get up" feel of this song makes another appearance in "the package" by a perfect circle. same exact idea. except i think apc has it as a winged iron giant robot trying to "give this to me" fly (like a moth to the sun ..."it's gonna be worth it!")
Early TOOL is some of the most honest music you will ever experience...no bells or whistles, just pure passion. Gotta do 'Hooker With A Penis' next, full of attitude and revenge...pure Maynard! More TOOL please, love you guys. X

I read somewhere sometime ago they wrote all their songs on lsd. As a 70s/80s user/not abuser, I have had many pleasant drug-free flashbacks while listening and looking thru the amazing albums artwork 😂😮😊
I do like some Tool though it has been a while since I've sat down and listened to them.
All of tools albums are concept albums this album specifically is about two things escaping the cycles of abuse and addiction and facing your problems and escaping you mind and mental illness before it consumes you there’s a bit more to it as well especially with the song flood he’s using an undertow as a metaphor to being trapped an undertow is, a strong seaward bottom current returning the water of broken waves back out to sea
This is what Tool was. I don't now when they started being called a Prog Rock band, but this was 100% hardcore Grunge

I was wondering when you'd listen to Undertow.
I liked their first Opiate EP, before Undertow that got heavy rotation on MTV. I more liked the band Stabbing Westward at the time, more punch. Check their song Ungod.
Another band from the time was The God Machine with the killer song Dream Machine.

The three bands I loved that I always felt had a similar sound were Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills, and God Lives Underwater. Great music from all of em.

Opiate and undertow easily are their two heaviest albums it got psychedelic and progressive from Ænima onward tool from 92 to 93 was alt metal alt rock hard rock

Lex is pretty close to spot on. It's definitely about nodding out on heroin and he's stuck in the undertow and unable to get up. It's about trying to get out of addiction and finding your self under all over again. EU PHOR RI AAAHHHH

I mean, when you don’t have a lyric video just pull up Genius, (but just don’t look at the “meaning” sections and the comments because all of that is user edited, so their interpretation is as good as yours but it’s so easy to get influenced by those opinions once you give them your time-pretty rare I pull up an annotation but I will to figure out a line or verse because maybe they incorporated a primary source into their interpretation, like an interview where the songwriter said, “this line means this…,” of course, that’s something Maynard never did for the bulk of the band’s existence. In fact, when asked he would explain that he’d rather fans interpreted the songs on their own, without his input beyond the expression itself.)
The whole Undertow album is that “heavy.”
Songs about heroin ( of course). And the emotive response to its addiction: the only word he screams, then elongates in the remaining 1/3 of this song is EUPHORIA!💡
Check out "A Perfect Circle" please. It's Maynard's(Tool's lead singer)'s side project. Also A+ excellent. Bit of a different style.
