FC is a Guitar Hero term meaning "Full Combo" it means he hits all the notes and no overstrumming. It basically means he played all the notes correctly.
@@Raittarian hey thank you so much for replying! Ahhh I see that makes a lot of sense. All the more power to you, you nailed it either way. I respect it!
Thanks for watching my video dude, it means a lot :) The tab book wasn't out when I covered that song (couldn't find it if it was...) and I saw you play this live recently and realized how much I got wrong! Love your vids, keep 'em commin'! Cheers
Could you do some compositional breakdowns of your songs? How parts were written, what's happening theory-wise, etc.? Especially that clean Dark Horizontal bit, I'd love to know what's going on compositionally.
As someone who has played Guitar Hero/Clone Hero for a very long time, I am incredibly happy to see you watching the a vid from Randy. I figured I'd throw in some input as someone fairly knowledgeable on the game. An "FC" is a "Full Combo". You go from the first note to the last note of the song without breaking your combo. Pretty much 100% notes hit without overstrumming, which would break your combo. Most Clone Hero vids will always be FC's especially if the player very skilled. Randy is a top 5 player in the world along with Darkly, Frosted, GHAddict, and Acai (not a 100% definitive list) That gallop technique is actually super comfortable to do on a plastic guitar. Since you're effectively moving a lever up and down and not actually plucking a string, it's not too weird when you actually do it. On a real guitar it's a nightmare of course, but for GH/CH, it really helps with being efficient since starting each gallop with a downstroke can get tiresome especially at higher tempos/notes per second. Also being able to use your index finger to do the "upstroke" makes the technique very easy to do as Randy did. Archspire songs as a whole are perfect for the custom song community. Hell, the only chart I've ever made was for Scream Feeding. A lot of players have gotten to the level of skill where they'd rather play digitally created songs since songs created by bands aren't hard enough. They will either do that or take songs and speed them up to be more challenging. (Randy uploaded a 250% speed Bat Country FC today. Yes, 2.5x speed of the original song) Archspire is challenging enough to where advanced players still get a kick out of playing them. If anyone have any questions, I'll try my best to reply to anyone with questions about Clone Hero.
yeah man! I was gonna add in that thing about using the index finger for the upstroke, its way more natural on the strum bar than actual gallops. I was one of the people that got into metal and guitar centric music in 5th-6th grade because of guitar hero and now I've been doing both real guitar and guitar hero for like 13 years lol.
That's what I was thinking of as he mentioned that. It's interesting that Lucas Mann said that's the way to do it, because you waste less energy/time moving your hand back up, but Dean sticks with regular galloping. It's interesting to see two techniques presented with different reasons behind them.
It’s like alternate picking vs. economy picking. One is technically more efficient, but maybe a little disruptive to your natural rhythm if you haven’t practiced it a lot.
@@monsterfukk7737 Lucas probably does it that way because it's a lot better for him as a player to conserve energy, RoS tend to save all their ridiculousness for some very specific riffs and the solos, so it's probably just the way he prefers to do it. I love seeing all the different playstyles of talented guitarists, really helps to show that there's no "one way" to do it.
11:40 In case you're wondering it makes it so you don't lose any momentum in your picking hand. Lucas Mann has a video on this, I think the song Bleed by Meshuggah also uses this technique. It's extremely annoying to practice you pretty much have to change your entire muscle memory for gallops.
11:36 This is something that Lucas Mann breaks down in his tutorial video for "Shards of Scorched Flesh" at the 8 minute 20 second mark. He said something along the lines of you start working against yourself at a certain point. He also brings up the continuity thing and discusses practicing specifically to address the accents. Economy of motion blah blah blah...I can't gallop at 200 bpm like y'all anyway so it doesn't matter for me, but you might find it useful. The lick he plays is pretty damn fast. I'd be curious to see if you can get it with the conventional method. Cheers!
I used to gallop like the guitar hero guy when I was first learning things like The Trooper, because my right hand couldn’t keep up with the speed of the gallops at full-speed. Whilst it really helped with my upstroke-vs-downstroke consistency, trying to get every group of 3 sounding the same, it was a really annoying habit to break as my muscle memory kept defaulting to alternating starting on down vs up. Even today a decade later I favour starting on an upstroke if I’m not paying attention in riffs where it might seem unnatural to most people. Fun to see that I wasn’t the only person to gallop like that though (even if this guy is playing Guitar Hero not actual guitar).
If I did a cover of one of my favorite bands songs, and then a member of that band went and posted a video reacting and *playing alongside me* my mind would be absolutely fucking blown
Man, i recently found your channel after scrolling through the comments of your first album and i feel like you don't appreciate your own music enough! I really think Archspire is pretty much the very best technichal death-whatever band ever! Cheers!

I don't know how this will make you feel but I first came across Archspire when looking for crazy hard songs to play on Guitar Hero (or Clone Hero, as the version Randy is playing) and I really liked the music, so I came to UA-cam to check you guys out and found the Season of Mist playthrough videos and loved the 7+8 string guitar combos and how cleanly you guys played, combined with the insane technique the drummer has for the 300bpm blasts and the super fast vocals... everything just pulled me in like stars to a supermassive black hole!
The problem with if you were trying to do the normal method for those gallops, is you can't fake the last upstroke as well, and if you overstrum (strum more notes than are actually there) then you will miss the FC.
I remembered going to some random local venue in Portland and seeing your band there you guys were unbelievable, I was very drunk, I think the only conversation we had was about merch and I didn't actually end up buying anything lmao keep it up dude ✊
Lucas Mann has a video of him playing a track off of dingir that has that down-up-down up-down-up gallop picking. He pulls it off pretty well and it’s pretty cool to see

The pianist was struggling a little though; needs to shed it more before posting to UA-cam. Also, I like that Dean does these; they are funny and showcases other talented musicians!
That whole part about the gallop between down-up-down, up-down-up. Or doing al down-up-down... I am a drummer and torn between hitting these style parts on kick with right-left-right, left-right-left when it gets that fast orrrrr just hit two separate right-left-rights. I wasn’t sure if I was the only one having this debate until now 😂 super cool video man
Lucas Mann from Rings of Saturn actually play his fast gallops doing Down Up Down and then Up Down Up, he explains that he can go faster and that he trained to achieve the same sound.
Randy in the beginning and thumbnail, awesome! Been online friends with that dude for so many years. I also play like him, just less fast. 67 notes per second is my max so far.
FC = Full Combo. It refers to all of the notes in the song being hit without missing. You keep your combo from the first note, all the way to the last note of the song, hence the term "Full Combo"
I play guitar so I know what you’re talking about with the way he does gallops. Having also played a lot of guitar hero I think I can pretty safely say that he alternates starting with a downstroke and an upstroke to avoid accidentally bumping the strum bar thus over strumming and breaking his combo. You shred dude, keep it up! \m/
Funny what u said about the sweeping parts, because Michael Angelo Batio... invented, discovered, made? the sweep picking technique because he played piano and he wanted clean arpeggios like u play in piano, so those shapes u play on guitar originally come fron piano ^^
Judging by my experience, he's doing these "alternating gallops" because of the nature of the "strum button". It's a button with two triggers - up and down. Neutral position does not trigger anything BUT because it has a spring inside - it will return to neutral everytime you let go of it. Sometimes, when you're playing very fast shit (like, I don't know.... Archspire or something), it can fuck you up by triggering once more. Alternating like that (and holding it instead of letting it return to neutral position) helps to eliminate this.
And when the strumming gets really fast having it trigger on its own is preferred. That way you can do a technique called rake strumming where flicking the strum bar down once causes 1 input, then when it bounces back up thanks to the spring, its so sensitive that it does an up-strum on its own. You rake the bar, so that your index finger and middle finger together flick the bar twice on the way down, and it returns to neutral between them each causing an up-strum on its own. So with one motion down, you get 4 inputs. Another 4 when you up-strum. So with fast rake strumming you can get tens of notes per second strummed, way past whats possible on a real guitar.
When i first taught myself to play guitar I hated using a pick so i simulated a pick with my two fingers like the first dude lol. Actually worked out pretty well for a while but its hard to get any real attack on the strings
Nice to see guitar hero getting some love! I didn't make the chart in the video, but I am finishing up the whole Relentless Mutation album on guitar thanks to the tab book. It's the closest I'll get to being able to play Archspire 😂
We use to call it alternate triplets. My friend was quite fast on the guitar and going down with every triplet slowed him down to much. So he started going down up down, up down up. Maby i can get him to pick up his guitar again and send you a vid.

I remember when I saw this 2 years ago and was like it cant be that bad its just like someones house right? Then in the doc you show its some random ass room dimly lit in like some alley, guess you were being honest haha
FC means Full Count or full combo. In other words they hit every single note and did not miss any. Very difficult to do especially on such a difficult song.
Fun fact: Anders Björler appearently plays galloping riffs strictly with alternate picking. Also, Patrik Jensen always starts the same riffs with an upstroke.
Dean: "It's pretty funny to see our music being played on a guitar like this.." Me: "It's absolutely hilarious to see death metal played on a fuckin gold glittery guitar" ;)
Hey Dean, new to the channel but could an olde English bastid request you suss out 'Bonesaw' by Autopsy? Should take a few minutes on a livestream, should be some fun. Keep that glitter on the guitar and not your face mate (some sort of 'dont sell-out' euphamism no doubt). Take it easy bro.
That "down up down, up down up" Gallop is how learned how to do it originally. It just makes more sense to use that rest rather than move my hand back up above the string during it. Lucas Mann talked about it in his "Shards of Scorched Flesh" lesson vid for those stupid fast gallops in that track.
The reason he chose to do the gallop that way is because he doesn't have to worry about rhythmic continuity because he has a screen that shows him when to play and when to pause. He's not playing to a rhythm he's playing to a screen that tells him what to do.
I think the guy who isn’t using a pick is actually using one of those graph tech thumb picks on his index finger or regular finger pick... he has something around his finger in both videos.

@@Embryoyoyo he was talking about gallops not alternate picking
“Well, that was weird, very strange...thank you” 😂😂
That piano one was insane
Totally
Fuck that piano cover is sick!
Agreed
Lucas Man also play 3 sixteen notes like that instead of galop triplets
Fun fact: Miles Dimitri Baker from Interloper actually does do the alternating gallop thing that Randyladyman does
Yikes
can we get a video of you and Claire playing guitar hero hahaha
Do you use eyelid highlighter? they look on point man
Ensiferum, Kamelot, Archspire
Roberto has good taste
The reason he chose to do the gallop that way is because he doesn't have to worry about rhythmic continuity because he has a screen that shows him when to play and when to pause. He's not playing to a rhythm he's playing to a screen that tells him what to do.
Dean loves final fantasy 7 yessssss
Jordan and Tommy are awesome
unless someone has already told you fc means full combo (but i call it full clear cause it means literally the same thing)
How you gonna stop a dark horizontal right before the solooo
I think the guy who isn’t using a pick is actually using one of those graph tech thumb picks on his index finger or regular finger pick... he has something around his finger in both videos.
