  • First climb of the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships 2022 in Trento - Italy for my age category 45-49. I started off (way) too quickly and had to recover. My goal was to stay with the group until the tunnel because I knew the climb would flatten out, but I completely destroyed myself in the process. I did my best 10 minute power of about 380 watt of this season during the beginning of the race which is insane.
Fortunately my talents are to be able to recover well and to die slowly. I managed to descent quickly and return in a big group in the valley. The second climb went really well (same VAM as the first climb) and I overtook a lot of people there. I did suffer a bit of cramps from all those efforts in the remainder of the race, yet managed to do the third and last climb within a minute of my second climb effort. With a last quick descent and strong sprint to the line I finally came in as 25th and first of my country. Was a tough day in the pain cave, but one to remember!

As a 70+ veteran I love to see this real-life struggle uphill as it happens, with the registration of speed, effort, etc. Brings back a lot of memories. Beautiful! Congrats to you

Shear guts and determination and impressive riding Werner and nothing less than I would expect from a true racer. A great upload to share with us. Thank you.

I think this is a matter of personal/fysiological preference. Contador was able to stand for an hour in a row. And it’s hard to argue that he was not efficient with it. Since I adopted seating/standing more often I greatly improved my results.

I think I found that 1st climb the toughest of the 3!

I must say watching you suffer like this on that climb , was unreal for the amount of times you picked up the pace out of the seat . I can just imagine how much training it took to have such good recovery . Great video , and all the data from Garmin . I hope you finished in good place in your age category.

an interesting insight, I find myself still quite fit at 57 years but would not have managed this kind of pace ha ha ha

Super Aufnahme, super Wetter, super Gegend! Was ist Grand Fondo? Das sind Hobbyrennen wie der Dolomitenmarathon als Rennserie? Weltweit?

So surprised how many of them were on rim brake bikes. At this level?

I use rim brakes for mountainous terrain myself. Mostly because it’s just way lighter. I think if the 6.8 kg limit was lifted for pro riders you would hardly see anybody with disc brakes on a dry day.

probably your ftp is higher than 335w. Doing 50w above the ftp for 10min is a recipe for disaster but somehow you managed. I would estimate that you are closer to 350 or 360w or you have super muscular endurance.

I don't understand the concept of a championship grand fondo. Who decides a world championship and a Grand Fondo would go together? What events lead up to this point where people qualify for this World Championship? Grand Fondos are meant to be a paid group ride, sometimes spirited group ride. Please educated me.

Generally you qualify by finishing in the top 20% of any official UCI Gran Fondo. It’s basically a world championship for amateurs (you’re not allowed to have accumulated UCI points in the elite category) by age group on a very tough course. Also it’s an individual race so no team cars or other followers are allowed.

You're out of the saddle too often. Learn how to spin faster going uphill.

True.... use the 39 tooth chairing and spin it for your life...... it uses less of your muscular system and more of the cardio, plus its more efficient........ he's a strong lad and I believe had he done that he could've kept in touch longer with the front group...
