Hey! I got a question, but before I ask I will detail some info about me. I am a freshman in high school and I have been playing tennis for a while (since I was 9). I grew up learning from my uncle. He showed my one handed backhand, forehand, serve, net play, etc. until I got a dedicated coach around 13 years old. This year as a freshman I am 6ft 3inch. I am most likely going to keep growing as many family members of mine are 6ft 7inch and higher. I am physically fit. I played with a western forehand grip for most years on forehand, I have a good serve I think for my age and height, and a decent backhand. I pretty much only play on hard court and do USTA and highschool this year.
I understand that andrei is a onehander and has an eastern grip forehand. I have been considering changing my grip to something more moderate because my coach says my grip is too extreme for my height (I dont know the sciences and all behind tennis grips. I let my coach do that for me) and I will admit that recently my forehand has struggled as I have grown a lot in the last year. I know many people use a semi western and right now I may switch to that. However, I have seen some great eastern forehands.
So here is my question: Andrei I bet has played with an eastern for most of his life. What does he experience with it (spin, power, control, etc.)? Also, how does he train with that grip and how does he tend to play with that grip? If I do decide to switch to an eastern forehand, do you have any tips for me? I would say I have good extension and footwork because I have played for a while but if I have to do something different let me know. Also, how does he train his backhand? I watched a video and he looks much more comfortable with the backhand than I do. I kinda slice alot or just dont hit it unless the ball is easier. Is there anything he did during his highschool time to make his backhand that nice? My goal is college tennis right now.
Thanks Alot! Also, if anyone else has any comment or recommendations for me, let me know. I can go to my coach and show him the comment section. Plus, if I have to I can upload a video of me playing next time I play. I dont like putting myself on the internet like that but I will if I need to.

Connor Klein The answer is this. If you are an aggessive style player, eastern grip is great. Andrei likes to be aggressive from the baseline, which works well up to a point. Western grip produces more spin, of course.

I have been hitting with my training partner with both grips (semi and eastern) for the past few days now. I think I am going to go with semi western. Eastern was nice but I am not used to the ball it puts off. Semi is a bit closer to home and it feels like it has what I was looking for. I think I could use the eastern forehand but it is a very big change for me and I dont think it is wise to change this much in my game at my age. Maybe a year or two ago I could have done it.

@@Olgod2004 good luck Connor, i think the subtle change in grip will be good for you, too extreme Western will limit you too much!

@@mkbaharris Thanks for the comment. I agree... western was a bit of a bad habit growing up I guess. I was really short for most of my life then I boomed in height like crazy. So I guess to deal with the high balls early on I kinda swung western. but now that I am tall my forehand was just super spinny... I could flatten it but it was not what I was looking for because I felt like I really had to hit down on the ball in an awkward and bad positions sometimes.
Eastern was nice. I think going with semi western was better for me but I see the appeal of the eastern. I think playing with the eastern for a week really helped me change to a less extreme grip like the semi western. The eastern can get a lot of spin actually... I was suprised, but I have never been used to that kind of ball trajectory.
Semi western felt pretty the best... I could hit a solid drive... still a bit more spinny than my goal but I think that will just come down to practice. I think I like it better for my serve +1 though. The grip change and placement is better. I still get solid spin but I definently hit deeper now. It has been a few months since my original comment and I have played almost every day for 2 hours plus any matches I do.
I think I will leave it at this in case anyone stumbles upon my comment and is looking for advice (this is just based on my experience). I think the if you are looking to change grips, do moderate change because not only do you have to regain the feel of your forehand but also you have to come to terms with the new type of ball you hit. If you make a moderate switch, I think this process is much easier. Play style comes into discussion too. I think the channel owner of Andrei Fortennis made a good point about eastern lends itself to more aggressive players. If you are a coach or looking to get your kid into tennis or change their forehand, try to stay away from western. It may seem appealing at a young age but once they grow the western be bad. It made me play a little bit too defensive at times. If you can make it work then maybe it is fine but I think I recommend the semi western grip for most players. I think the eastern is a solid option too. Andrei hits a much better ball than most players so I guess that is enough proof.
Sorry for all the typing lol.
