    People freak out SO MUCH about insulin response... This is a great way to show them how much harm meat is really bringing in terms of the insulin response.

      BigTallTrainer I'm sick of people trying to be smartasses by saying: "Uhm actually fruit is very unhealthy cause blood sugar spikes!!" This isn't even just a thing amongst low carbers, people in general perpetuate this myth since sugar is so bad right? And then they turn around and drown their food in hundreds of oil calories that supply little to no nutrition but since humans need fat and carbs are the worst it's ok!!!!

      Insulin signals to the body it is time for anabolic activity, carb storage, protein synthesis, and repair. In and of it self not a bad thing.

      That is very true....however the degree is also important. A larger insulin spike doesn't mean more anabolism and bigger muscles and more repair. I mean c'mon if it did, then most of America would be so freaking fit and healthy.

      Fat is the only macronutrient that doesn't cause an insulin response. What's so surprising about the fact that adding more food, if it doesn't contain much fat, increases the insulin response?
      (If the only criteria was zero insulin response, the answer would be to only eat fat. Of course, that would cause health problems, too.)

    Very interesting video and great point you make about adopting a healthy diet being the more logical choice than taking drugs to counter the effects of a bad diet. I have this discussion with people a lot. There are lots of things I don't eat, because I know what's in them and I want to avoid inflammatory foods. People at whose houses I can't eat anything often say to me that my diet sounds like not a lot of fun. Meanwhile, those same people have trouble keeping up with me and are always complaining about being tired, having headaches, etc. People will rather take Statins, than change their diet, let alone exercise (and you don't have to go to the gym 3 times a week, but go for a walk a few times a week, instead of driving everywhere, right?). And it's such a waste, because they'd be happier and healthier in so many ways.

    To be clear, my blood sugars do rise slightly when I eat an avocado by itself; however, when I eat meat, cheese, fat (virgin coconut oil), Irish butter, or avocado oil) with the avocado, my blood glucose lowers (e.g. hence insulin spike)... imagine that! For the record, I eat 8-10 cups of green veggies daily (i.e. sometimes blended to retain fiber), also, if I eat 1/2 pink grapefruit with 2 eggs and 1 tbls virgin coconut oil or grass fed butter, my blood glucose lowers too. I might not be a medical doctor, actually a computer doctor (pun intended), but I have completely stopped taking insulin (fast and or long term) since January and reduced blood pressure simply by eliminating grains (ALL), prepared foods, fast food, and eating at least 7 cups of raw green veggies daily with fats and I am older and was dealing with 15 years as a type 2 diabetic. I still cannot eat crappy food, but animal and fruit are definitely part of my dietary intake and if raw milk was available in my area, I would also consume 2 cups daily. It would be nice to see some studies on meat, cheese, eggs, dairy, and nuts paired with leafy greens and non starchy veggies without the grains. I hope my pancreas heals to normal soon, but an average of 120 - 130 daily is not too awful when it was an average of 275 in December 2016! I agree with the concept of this video: eat your veggies and live a plant based lifestyle!

    Okay, this is great information and I eat berries every morning on my raw oatmeal. But some doctors would say that because I had high cholesterol and have one stent, now I am on statins and have low cholesterol, I should still eat no nuts or avocado. So which is it? Does avocado contribute to or reduce cholesterol. The problem I am finding on a whole plant food diet with no added fats or oil at all is that I have lost too much weight. Nuts and avocado would really help out here!

    I once was told by a raw fruitarian that fat and carbs should never be mixed. From this video, I can now add an extra layer of understanding to the equation: a fatty food that doesn't contain fiber makes us hit sugar spikes. Fatty and fibrous food can be mixed with carbs (to which Dr. Michael Greger would add 'complex carb'!).

    The main problem I have with this is that there's only one study listed here that followed the insulin curve with a non-animal protein. Since that study was done with peanuts, which are high in fiber, it confuses the picture on the protein effect. A good study to evaluate this would use isolated proteins. They could compare pea protein to whey protein, taken along with white bread. (They could also used hydrolyzed beef protein instead of, or in addition to the whey) this would give us more information about whether it's the protein or the food.

    • @earthpet
      @earthpet 7 років тому

      I think the idea is that plant sources of protein contain other components that are beneficial whereas animal based proteins are devoid of these beneficial components. So let's say the study was done using an isolated plant based protein and it also caused a spike. The conclusion would be to NOT consume concentrated protein sources.

  • @msinbalony
    @msinbalony 6 років тому

    I don't understand.. what I need is a comparison with an addition of plant based protein, and how that is affecting the insulin spike.. cause I assume of course an addition of any sort of food will spike the insulin response, the question is which will spike it higher - the plant based or the animal protein.

I have never been obese, fat or else, I eat well and portion my food to my satisfaction but I think our bodies need a well balanced diet that includes fruits, veggies, meats and grains that provide good fats. Our minds are more dangerous to our bodies than our diets. If you eat to feel well and be healthy then you will be. Just be conscious of your choices.

    Since I lack accessibility to these studies, can you tell me why meats, eggs and cheese are paired with starchy veggies or grains? For instance, I do not get an insulin spike from eating 4 chicken wings (baked with skin); however, when I pair them with a starch or grain, my insulin spikes. Can you research the effects and affects of just plain meat, eggs, and cheese without pairing with starch? Also, how many grams of protein are measured in these studies per meal?

      how do you check your insulin spike tho at home? i think what you mean is blood sugar

    • @MejamzEwe
      @MejamzEwe 7 років тому +1

      János Harcsa, You are correct, checking an insulin spike is not done at home, it is my blood glucose which does not rise... in fact, if anything, insulin, in the situation I presented appears to remain the same based upon the fact that my blood sugars do not rise or lower;moreover, if they are 120 when I eat the chicken, they remain between 110 - 120 2 hours later; furthermore, I need to check c-peptides to accurately check insulin spikes. Thank you for questioning my wording (e.g. someone is paying attention, nice to see a reaction). BTW; the body generates about 30 grams +- 5% of natural insulin per meal to maintain blood glucose levels, and it begins when you start to smell food. Thank you for questioning my perspective János Harcsa.

  • @KelKel627
    @KelKel627 7 років тому

    I would like to know what happens to these spikes when low amounts of carbohydrates are consumed. From what I've observed socially, most health-conscious people agree that refined and processed carbs are to be avoided. However, most of these people are more likely to believe the paleo/keto diet where carbohydrates are restricted. It seems that most of the information given in this video and the prior video combine meats and carbohydrates. Therefore, I think many people would use the potato/rice as a scapegoat and claim that the refined carbs are the issue.

    For the record, I subscribed to this channel to get nutrition facts as the channel name implies and while I understand what you are trying to accomplish, I have some questions and reservations regarding how much nutrition facts we are seeing. It is no wonder why people remain unhealthy, because most of the information presented is slanted toward promoting agendas, which there is nothing wrong with promoting an agenda, I just want to view ALL the nutritional facts when they are presented. I have had enough of each group or respective industry (dairy, meat, vegetable, medical, etc.) presenting free information that contains partial knowledge. Where is the whole enchilada (i.e. an analogy). It is no wonder I have had to spend 5 months researching nutrition and it looks like I will have spend more time in research to get all the facts, then decipher truth from hyperbola.

      Not really. The videos have shown that to be a canard and that the higher vegetable intake is more likely protective. This was in response to the idea that olive oil is healthy when it isn't, so meat would also apply given the higher rate of obesity in Greece, highest in Europe. The higher incidence of fish in Japanese diet is linked to depression and may be an indicator in Japan's high suicide rate. Japanese are thin but have a higher diabetes rate than USA. The combination of the tuna + potato graphs in this video show why. Same thing with tuna + rice in another video. It's the fish causing the problems through the body's overreaction to its presence. Avoid the fish and you don't have the reaction. Simple.

    • @bella3636
      @bella3636 7 років тому +1

      Karl Laur a Mediterranean diet with much fish and olive oil is not a healthy diet. It's just healthier than others because it does contain little meat and no dairy. In contrast to what other European countries are consuming :way too much meat and dairy. Dairy is probably the most harmful, Harvard even eliminated it of their food recommendation plate. Others recommend it because of the strong food industry lobbyists. healthesolutions.com/harvard-declares-dairy-not-part-of-healthy-diet/

    Isn't that a bit like comparing apples with oranges? As far as I know were the servings that led to the insulin index mentioned in the video, of the same caloric amount. Let's say they gave them 200g of white bread, meaning 500 Kcal. One egg weighing about 50g equals only 75 kcal. You would need 6.6 eggs to result in 31% of the insulin spike that our white bread evokes, means :
    You would need 21eggs to result in the insulin spike of 200g white bread. What a heavy breakfast!
    If You want to bring insulin levels down and thereby the risk of diabetes there's nothing better than keto diet and intermittent fasting.

    In my previous response questioning the research methods used in this and most studies, I worded my critique incorrectly, which, János Harcsa, questioned. Read my response to János Harcsa, for corrected wording. Also, since the body secretes insulin every time a meal is eaten, insulin will spike autonomously, sometimes not in the right proportion depending upon you personal pancreas health

  • @Appleblade

    Uh... why didn't you show the insulin spike when you leave carbs out altogether and just eat meat? My guess: because you get no insulin spike at all... and the fatter, redder the meat the better. And since plants and nuts interfere with vitamin and mineral absorption, and since we can make all the glucose we need from fat and protein, what's the reason to eat any carbs or plants at all?

      With all due respect, it sounds like you have no idea what raw food is. No raw foodist that I know eats any dairy, none. As for poly-nutrients, the old saying "more is not necessarily better" applies. Please do some reading before you make a crash statement like "The raw food diet is silly". Every living creature on Earth other than humans eats only raw food and drinks only water. As for Many foods are better digested cooked, that is because it takes your body a few days to adjust to "clean" food, once you do, cooked foods will not digest very well. I know this from over 17 years of being totally raw and studying the subject.

      Homo sapiens and other extinct Homo species have been cooking their food for about 1.9 million years. We are humans, not cows or any other kind of animal. It good that you and your friends don't eat raw eggs or milk, but that is quite a popular fad now days. If raw food works for you, fine, but it is just another fad diet. There is no science behind the extravagant claims of raw foodists. The key to good health is eating a whole plant based diet. Cooking some foods actually increases its nutritional value.

On my own I eat mostly plant based now, but occasionally go off the path and havre a soda, or a drink, or cake or ice cream. I don't really know what this all means. Human brains are linear, and these things that he is talking about are multi-variable with a lot of complex interactions, yet he sounds confident like he understands what he is saying and it makes sense, but he never just says - eat this, don't eat that, or have this meal for dinner, etc. All these experiments do not add up. I don't think anyone understands how human digestion works, and we are all genetically a little different too.

      Fish are sentient and feel pain -- in fact their nociceptors (pain receptors) are thought to be more sensitive than most mammals :S I don't really want to get into the ethics though.... I want to stress that in relation to human health fish contain mercury, PCBs, plastics, and other toxins (as well as saturate fat and cholesterol which Dr. Greger is not a huge fan of). The ocean is one giant ecosystem and she is very sick :( Eating something that is "less toxic" is still toxic and will cause an inflammatory response. You will certainly never hear Dr. Greger promoting eating fish!
      Not sure why you felt the need to tell the original poster that wild caught fish is still okay, but just thought I'd let you know that many would disagree. Eder Corrales, happy to hear you are doing well! Keep up the great changes, it gets easier and easier :)

      One of the studies shown in the previous video does compare adding vegetables to meals. Another compares salad. Added oil(fat) was also compared in both these studies, which was found to significantly reduce blood sugar and insulin spikes. Probably explains why almond butter combined with Wonder Bread lowered blood sugar spike.

      NGC6144 Thanks for sharing those articles. They show exactly what I expected: when having a balanced meal, animal protein does NOT cause an unhealthy insulin spike.
      I'm pretty sure the insulin spike that comes with "animal protein" and carbs, is easily explained by the lack of fiber. Fiber, of course, regulates the absorption rate, and thereby attenuates the insulin spike and the glycemic response. So, it's not that "vegetable protein" is better... It's just that vegetables come with fiber. Very simple.
      By contrast, what this presentation actually shows is that fish and chips is an unhealthily balanced meal. Don't think we needed charts to demonstrate that point.

      The credit goes to Davey. Anyways, from what I understand and I'm not advocating this diet, high fat and animal protein(Ketogenic) diets don't spike insulin and blood sugar like what Dr. Greger is pushing in this video. It's when high fat is combined with carbs that sugar/insulin spike, not the protein per se. But, with animal protein comes with fat, especially fish. This is typical of Dr. Greger to produce a video that isn't really objective enough just to push don't eat meat.

    I used to really enjoy avocados, but since I've gotten used to eating low fat, they are now too fatty for me. The thought of eating a whole avocado by myself makes me feel queasy. I'd have to share it, so it's not as much fat in a single meal.
    The other thing keeping me from eating them is that they are usually not ripe and it's hard to judge when they are ripe enough to eat and not miss the timing and have them go bad. And sometimes they get squished or something and they go bad before they are even properly ripe. You can't even really plan to buy avocados for a meal that way because you never know if you'll be able to get ripe ones at the store or how long they will take to ripen if they aren't ripe already.
    Avocados are one of the most frustrating fruit to buy.
