How to make an ABS Journeyman Smith Performance Test Knife
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this video I will be forging a bar of 1084 steel into an ABS (American Bladesmith Society) journeyman smith performance test knife. After the knife is forged, the blade is rough ground then heat treated. Then final grinding, handle installation and the actual performance test from beginning to end. #abstestknife #performancetestknife

You didn't luck out brother. You know what your doing... You got this 🤜
Thank you my friend! 😁
Really nice tutorial again!
I certainly got something out of it.
I like that you get information from Larrin Thomas/KSN and keep your metallurgical knowledge up to date. A lot of knifemakers with as many years of experience as you would think they know it all.
I also like that you openly mention what you would do differently at the end.
You're a humble man and I have a lot of respect for that.
Thanks a lot for sharing all this info.
Thank you. If we stop learning, we’re like a stagnant pond. I learn constantly. Thanks for watching my friend. 🙂
Dang , I had confidence that it would pass, but it still made me nervous ! Nice work friend. I especially appreciate your knowledge of metallurgy. I see too many that are clueless.
Thanks man! I actually made two and brought the 2nd one to do the actual test with Master Smith JW Randall. I made them both exactly alike so I knew if the first one would pass, I had it licked.
@TonySeverioKnives lol...good plan. I met him years ago at a show in Charlotte. Also an old maker at the time who was very popular, George Herron.
Yes indeed. I posted the test with him last year. This June I passed my presentation test at Blade Show. Here’s the actual performance test vid.

I knew Gorge Herron as well. 🙂
Tony, MileHighMark...been a long time since I've seen you, since you Rugaru days. I'm a high school friend of Bill from Lip 'Em & Rip 'Em. Always enjoy your videos and your passion! Love seeing you at work brother. I had no idea you were a bladesmith! You inspire me man. Actor, Director, Producer, Filmmaker, Fisherman, Hunter, Father, Bladesmith ect. ect... I miss chatting with you and your better half on Facebook. Keep on Trucking y'all!
Hey man, yeah I took a long break from UA-cam. Life circumstances etc. I’m no longer working in the film industry. It’s a viscous pit of snakes to say the least! But I’m back on youtube now and focused totally on bladesmith work. But yes I’ve been a bladesmith/knifemaker for over 30 years. Thanks for watching and I hope you hang around. Thanks!!
Beautiful job Tony. I love that you said you lucked out on the testing because any of us that have been watching your videos know there was about 5-10% luck and 90-95% skill lol. You always do beautiful work. Wishing the best of success on your journey for the journeyman testing.
Thank you my friend. I try to stay humble because we are never perfect. 😄
@@TonySeverioKnives now thats the truth right there. Thanks for sharing your work with all of us I really enjoy your style of knife building.
You’re welcome my friend. Thanks for watching!
Makes my heart stop just watching that bend test!
It's definitely spooky for sure. :)
awesome job my bro! that's a good functional design as well!
Thanks buddy!
Excellent job Tony! Goodluck with the test!
Thank you my friend! 😁
nice job Tony and good luck to you on your test Mark
Thanks Mark!
Wow Tony that was great Thanks for taking us on this test it was very good ,But I-knew you could do it ,BUT 90 Degrees WOW Goodjob from TN GREAT SMOKEY MOUNTAINS
Thank you sir, I’m glad it helps. Thanks for watching! 😁
Great job! Really like how you share the whys and wherefores of what you’re doing too. Too many people get stingy with their knowledge. You’re sure to pass if you haven’t already, best of luck to ya
Thank you and you’re welcome. I try to share what I can. However I do understand the hesitation from folks. I’ve done this over 30 years and have paid dearly for training. Just 6 weeks ago I paid for a class. Looking at my followers across 4 social media platforms, I have more than 130,000 followers. Out of that many followers I have THREE patrons on my Patreon. The reciprocation is hardly measurable. So I definitely understand. 😁
Awesome! Thx for explaining everything !
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Aweseome work!
Thanks brother. 😁
Great job
Thanks Jim! 😁
This is something I have been putting off for awhile. Just don’t know where to begin the process. I guess the first step is to believe in myself and find someone local for assistance. I live in Mt Airy NC. If you know anyone close that could help I would be appreciative. Great knife and test. Well done sr.
I don’t personally know anyone in your area but if you go to the American Bladesmith Society website, you can access a list of journeyman and mastersmiths around the country. They list by locations. 😁
@@TonySeverioKnives awesome. Thank you. I have been making knives for a few years and I certainly don’t know everything. I try to make the best possible knife with what I have however I really need professional advice and criticism from the makers who have a lot more experience then I. I will get up the courage and contact someone.
Just stick with it my friend 😁
Wish you the best of luck sir
Thank you my friend, I appreciate it! 😁
Try that no scale from pops knife supply! It will save you a lot of money
I have. Got some n the shop. 🙂
Nice video
Thanks!
Dang.....my knives are just under a quarter inch thick. What is the best thickness for this test?
If it’s too thick, it’s just takes more strength to bend it. As long as the heat treat is good and you can bend it, you’re good. My actual test knife was about 5/32 thick.
