  • In this video lecture, professor fink reviews the major functions of the Limbic System (including emotions), and the Hypothalamus the center of Homeostasis) of the Brain. Included in the presentation are neural connections, Regulatory Reflex Centers and selected pathologies & disorders. Limbic System reference include the amygdaloid nucleus, the rabies virus, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder & antidepressant drugs. Hypothalmus references include the Thermoregulatory Reflex Center, the Osmoregulatory (Thirst) Reflex Center [supraoptic nucleus], the Appetite/Satiety Reflex Center and the Parturition/Milk Let-Down Reflex Center [paraventricular nucleus].

    Thank you so much Professor Fink for making physiology so easy understanding and logical
    I was studying with german books (Silbernagel/Thieme and Schmidt/Springer) the whole year but it didnt worked out very well because they overcomplicate even easy topics for no reason...
    My final is in the next week and now with your support I am not afraid about the exam anymore.
    Thank you very very much for sharing your knowledge and helping students to have fun studying physiology

    Dr. FINK , I am a retired cardiologist much interested in neurophysiology. I recently discovered your UA-cam during the Covid lock-down in INDIA. They are Superb.
    You are a great teacher, indeed. I wondered why you didn't mention serotonin in depression. Also, why you didn't discuss sleep cycle and sexual arousal etcetera in your discussion , I wondered. Thanks a lot for your lectures , Dr. Fink. I plan to watch every one of them.

      Thank You for your kind words about my Video Lectures! There are many other facets of Human Physiology that I would liked to have presented, but for the limitation of time. All Teachers must choose which topics to cover -- or not -- based upon the amount of time and their relative importance in that course.

    Dr. Thank you for caring I love all your lectures. You are a master teacher. Please tell me what causes Bell's palsy please?

    • @professorfink
      @professorfink  7 років тому +4

      Bell's Palsy is associated with dysfunction of the Facial Nerve (VII). It is believed to be caused by a viral infection of the Facial Nerve [see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell%27s_palsy ]
      I speak about Bell's Palsy in my Video Lecture on the Cranial Nerves (about the 25 minute mark): ua-cam.com/video/CvETRHXwb9I/v-deo.html

    Prof. Fink... Fantastic lecture. Just a note, however, on the concordance rate in monozygotic twins for schizophrenia. It is not nearly 100%. In fact, the highest concordance rate I've found (with a little variability depending on the study), is around 50%. I wonder... is there some study, or comorbidity factor you're including (some studies have discussed that schizophrenia may have a continuum of disorders?)? I used to work for the MN Twin Family Study, so this just happens to be an area that piques my interest :)

    • @professorfink
      @professorfink  8 років тому +9

      Thank you, Rana, for pointing-out that the identical twin studies show -- at most -- a 50% correspondence, and not the 90% that I stated. I would like to also thank Dr. Jonathan Weiner, MD for making this same point. Dr. Weiner, a forensic psychiatrist also made the following 2 additional points regarding schizophrenia: [1] it should be viewed more as a loss of contact with reality than an antisocial disorder, and [2] the risk of violence associated with most schizophrenics is not higher than that found in the general population. -- professor fink

    contact report 294, February 3rd, 2001: "Billy:
    Well, again and again the question arises whether the character can be inherited. In my opinion this should not be the case, because during my whole life I have never noticed that descendants have the same character as one or the other parent. Therefore, I assume that each person forms his or her own individual character. First this happens through the basic character formation that takes place during pregnancy in the mother's womb. This is followed by the educational character, which is formed by education and environmental influences during the first seven years of life. And finally, through self-education the character of life is formed, which results from the first two character forms and from the character of self-education.
    Ptaah:
    85. The character cannot be inherited and is therefore not genetically conditioned.
    86. The actual character, which you correctly call life character, is formed by the basic character or pregnancy and prenatal character as well as by the educational character and the self-educational character, as you have correctly explained.
    87. All three stages of character formation are therefore decisive for the final character form, the character of life.
    88. The entire process of character formation takes place in the limbic system in which the instance of morality is located.
    Billy:
    This is probably the instance that decides on the negative and positive as well as on the good and bad or honest and dishonest thinking, feeling and acting?
    Ptaah:
    89. You can also explain it this way.
    Billy:
    Good."
