    Can you make this a series? Breaking down the elements of bags? Crossbody straps, pockets, zippers, boxing corners, adding accessories (feet, patches, d-rings, etc). I know you show us in the tutorials, but I’d like the foundations to add to ANY bag.

    I buy my interfacing in large quantities, so first thing I do is cut a bunch of 4” & 6” strips with my rotary cutter and ruler so they are ready for straps. When it’s time I just cut the strap fabric to the size I want and iron on the strips. I feel it’s a bit quicker than block fusing and cutting. I make a ton of bags though, so it’s convenient to keep those cuts set aside.

    When making a quilting cotton strap, for some bags, I like to just lay in cotton twill tape after I've pressed the fabric into a double fold. You can easily find it in either three quarters or one inch. It makes a strap that is still soft and flexible, but very strong. The top stitching will hold it in place just fine.

    Thanks Jess!! I have, by trial and error, learned to put some kind of interfacing in my straps. I have had to remake some cotton straps that wore out before the bag did. But, another thing I do is sew 3 or 4 rows of top stitching along the cotton straps to give it more stability. That really helps!

    Thanks for these great tutorials. I love them and I'm learning so much. Thank you. I've always learned to just hold the threads in the back and handcrank the needle into the fabric and hold the threads so they don't slip away. And then start my seam with back stitching and continue the seam till the end and backstich again. this way you also don't need to use any fabric just to start a stitch/seam.

So I hurry through the strap which can lead to mistakes and I don't enjoy the process. Also, like you said, the strap is ready to snap on when the bag is finished.

    Thank you for the video, as always. I have sort of a question, just looking for your thoughts. So many bags have “regular” straps. Then in addition they have a cross body strap. Personally, I think they should be one or the other. I don’t like using the crossbody strap and have a bag hanging on me with the other two “unused” straps flapping around. I usually skip the crossbody and lengthen the other straps to make a comfortable shoulder bag. If I really want a crossbody, I choose a pattern with only the crossbody strap. Does that make any sense at all? Sometimes I think I’m the only person the feels that way....Thoughts?

    • @OklaRoots
      @OklaRoots  3 роки тому +1

      You're definitely not the only one that feels that way! I also don't really like handle straps hanging when I wear a crossbody. I think many times bag makers (if store bought) just want to make the bag accessible to everyone.

One of my sewing machine is a smaller brother and it doesn't like a lot of bulk but my newer machine, the brother pq1500sl, it goes right through it. I would suggest you make a small scrap made up of what it would be if you were using the waterproof canvas for both and see how your machine does.
