the Swimmer and Seconds have a lot in common: Of which , one point: Both Rock Hudson and Burt Lancaster thought they were the best acting jobs/roles they ever did. Both movies were out just as the 2 were past their "prime". Both movies were HUGE box office failures and are now held upon HIGH regard with fans.
When me and my best friend saw "A Hard Day's Night" in 1964, there were all these young ladies in the theater screaming, just as if they were seeing The Beatles in concert! My friend kept calling out "SHUT UP" while tossing popcorn at them, even though he also kept turning to me and complained that he couldn't understand what The Fabs were saying because of their accents.
I lived in Northampton Mass when "A Hard Days Night" was released and the Father of a guitarist in our fledgling band was the Manager of the Theater. As a result of our connection we arrived at Noon and sat through the film 5 or 6 times.....the final two times being all by ourselves as the theater was Closed at 10 or thereabouts. With each viewing our lives changed a bit more. Within a short time after that "Viewing" a Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar and my Hofner Bass became Family Members. 🍎 #fab

"The President's Analyst" had an appearance of the psychedelic band Clear Light.For some reason Barry McGuire played the lead singer of the band, when he wasn't actual lead singer.
Being British and a huge appreciator of 60s music and films, I love this period of time. I love Hard Days Night and Help, but also "Ferry Cross the Mersey" with Gerry Marsden, Cilla, the Fourmost , "Catch us if you can" DC5 , "Bunny Lake is missing" starring Kier Dullea and featuring the Zombies, "Saturday Night Out" featuring the Searchers, "The System" starring Oliver Reed (theme song by the Searchers) "These are the Damned" starring Ollie Reed, "Scream and Scream again" starring Vincent Price and Featuring Amen Corner, "Melody" AKA "S.W A.L.K." made in 1970, but featuring 60s music by the Bee Gees and C.S.N. There are so many , we were spoilt for Excellent Quality and interesting themes. Love all 60s Hitchcock & Bond (Her Majesty's Secret Service) . I love your channel, it's right up my street 🎶👍👦👍🎶❤

Do you know these early beat group films " Live It Up " featuring a ton of pre Beatles groups all courtesy of maniac Joe Meek. " Some People " from 1962 young toughs get into music to claen up their act and 1965's " Be My Guest ". All of these feature David Hemmings and two have Steve Marriott pre Small Faces. Are you a fan of " Up the Junction " with Suzy Kendall and music by Manfred Mann ??

"Some People" was filmed in Bristol, you can see how the City looked back then. I like alot of Joe Meek's Artist's particularly the Honeycombs. They had a Magnificent Singer Dennis D'ell, and their first LP was one of the Best albums from 1964.

Omg I’m 61 and I’ve seen all of those movies. I’m one of those ppl who rave about Dr Stangelove. I think I’ve been watching Mad mad mad mad world as long as I’ve been watching movies. I liked the Matt Helm movies too and I’d watch the first Batman movie anytime it’s on. Ditto The great escape. My wife loved the beach blanket movies which about as guilty a pleasure as it gets.lol Now this is from the 90s but since you were talking about westerns I’d say Tombstone may by the last great western(Val Kilmers Doc Holiday) We always got a kick out of watching Rod Taylor boarding windows without nails in The Birds. Good list! Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is the only major omission I can think of at the moment. Great movie. Another very 60's screwball comedy (although not exactly a great movie) is "What's New Pussycat".
I am so glad you mentioned "The Party" because that movie hardly gets mentioned anywhere. I first saw in the theatre back in the day when I was a little kid. It is very much a period piece and definitely of its time. I still enjoy this movie to this day on DVD.
Just watched "The Party" again, the first time for my wife, a month ago...! Laughed just as loud as the last 6 (?) times before...good medicine for the soul..."Birdie Num Num..."
One thing I like about movies is when I can admire a character. One of my favorite scenes in all of cinema is in Breakfast At Tiffany's in which the two chief characters are in Tiffany's, shopping for something for only ten dollars. The clerk in the store treats them with attentiveness and respect, even after realising they only have ten dollars. Great model for how to treat people. Love that.
Love the Innocents! Gothic Horror perfection! One of my favorite ghost stories on film is the 1976 BBC Christmastime special for the Signal-man, which is an adaptation of a Dickens short story. You can find it on youtube, and I highly recommend it. It's a creepy slowburn, but in the best way.
I caught a bit of The Innocents on TV once, very striking and memorable. It was the inspiration for a song on Kate Bush's third album, The Infant Kiss from Never For Ever.
I saw almost all of the films you mentioned. I remember my father took me to the drive in to see "A Hard Day's Night". I think he unexpectedly liked it. Sounds you you had a happy childhood. (Moon River).
Pyscho came out in 1960, when I was 10. Plastic wrap was kind of a new thing at the time, replacing waxed paper for food storage. So I'm sitting in the theater, during the Saturday matinee, watching Psycho, and when Perkins wraps Janet Leigh in the shower curtain, some girl sitting behind me said, "I guess that's a Sad Bag."
Great list and review. Mad Mad World did have a fantastic sequel in 1979 now disavowed by Speilberg: 1941. Robert Stack is a priceless counterpoint to the original, unequalled SNL stars Belushi, Aykroyd, and Candy. Spectacular dance scene, not to mention the flapjacks! Hard to equal the earnest pathos of Winters, but the Stack v Tracy role offers golden nuance. Belushi is at the very top of his game...."let me hear your guns!"
I had friends that went to find "The Big W" from the movie! They had to scale a huge rocky area to get to it. It's actually on someones property (private home). They were greeted by GUARD DOGS behind the fence surrounding the property and had to make it back down the mountainous area - Covered with cuts and bruises . At that time , part of the "Big W" was gone already. I remember when it was down to just one tree. And that is probably gone now.
Definitely a Very Nice film list, Matt.👌 My 60s list necessarily includes starting off the decade with Stanley Kubrick’s epic _‘Spartacus’_ (1960) and ending the decade with his _‘2001: A Space Odyssey’…._ And “tucked in-between” must certainly include the equally epic productions of David Lean’s _‘Lawrence of Arabia’_ (1962) and _‘Dr. Zhivago’_ (1965), plus Joseph Mankiewicz’s pageantry epic _‘Cleopatra’_ (1963) and *definitely* Stanley Donen’s brilliant productions of both _‘Charade’_ (1963) and _‘Two for The Road’_ (1967) “highlighting” irreplaceably Stylish-n-Gorgeous Audrey Hepburn!!! 😍 And the “merited” cast in John Frankenheimer’s startling _‘The Manchurian Candidate’_ (1963), and Sinatra's pivotal cast in _'Ocean's Eleven'_ too (1960). And perhaps even the equally “startling” *ramifications* in the original _‘Planet of The Apes’_ (1968) by wonderful Franklin Schaffner….. On the Westerns front, unquestionably Brando's directorial achievement in _'One-Eyed Jacks'_ (1961) remains forever in my personal #1 Western Slot, while Sam Peckinpah’s remarkable _‘The Wild Bunch’_ (1969) actually "broke new cinematic ground" while laced thru a very well-developed plot of "ethics" and "allegiances", and Richard Brooks’ equally A-Team cast in _‘The Professionals’_ (1966) certainly rate _Right Up There_ *TOO….* IMHO!!! 🤪 And of course, The List could.... _and DOES...._ go *On-n-On-n-On....* within the 60s "peak" of Hollywood's unrivaled Golden Age of cinema!!! 👍= 🎯

I have to agree with most of your list and there are a few you mentioned that I never saw and always wanted to such as Torn Curtain so thank you for that. But as a side note about the pizza delivery- we never had fast food or ate out at a restaurant more than once a year when I was a kid. But every now and then we’d get a pizza delivered and it will always be associated with a happy memory of my childhood. As always great show.
A great list, Matt, Thanks. Like you, I have fond memories of watching all of these movies when I was young. The scene from Dean Martin's "The Enforcer", in which he cavalierly drinks while driving, reminds me of something that happened to me in the late 60s: Four of us teenagers were driving around town drinking beer when a policeman pulled us over. He questioned us, shined his flashlight around the car and saw the open beer bottles that we had hurriedly placed on the floor. The cop told us to be careful and let us go on our way. I guess back then there just wasn't an awareness of how dangerous it was to drink and drive! It was a different time...

Ah Henry Mancini. I loved Charade! Many of the films you mentioned are my favorites of the 60's. Family friendly films we saw in a theater but Peter Sellers, Beatles, Hitchcock, war films, westerns and Bond films were always at the drive-in. My favorite memory was seeing 'Hard Days Night' from the back of a station wagon in my pj's with a friend. Mom popped a brown paper shopping bag full of of buttered corn. Casino Royale was one of the first films I saw on a COLOR TV at my grandparent's house! Wow! When I was a kid the elementary school and our local theater would show a comedy or two for a quarter. Usually a Jerry Lewis or Bob Hope. Popcorn was a dime. Pretty great when you're 8 or9. I will watch anything with Sellers, Grant, Hepburn, or James Garner. Way too many movies to list here. This was a great idea for a video Matt. Brought back some wonderful memories. I just finished watching a couple of Peter Sellers biographies. What a marvelous odd man he was. I do recall the film 'Blow Up' being in the George Harrison biopic 'Living In The Material World' co-produced by Olivia Harrison, covering George working on the soundtrack. All time favorite movie 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. My room was covered with posters and pictures from the film. I had 3 copies of the soundtrack. Spoiler alert: My family is related to Butch and my new grandbaby is named Cassidy. (I'll stop now.) 😆
Great list! "Thunderball" from the Bond series is my favourite. Some Hammer Horror, as well as "Mask of the Red Death" with Vincent Price would also belong on my list. Still love the Pink Panther movies.

Just re- watched A Taste of Honey with Rita Tushingham for the umpteenth time. And may I add, another great film ça. 1966 is A Man for All Seasons - superb!

I see this is a year old but enjoyed it: Shot in the Dark was my favorite comedy for decades. Goldfinger the BEST bond film….In my top all time movies from your list along with Hard Days Night andThe Birds. Love The Apartment The Wild Bunch is my favorite western all time, 1969. We went to the movies (us kids) most Saturdays so my fav kids movies include: Journey to the Center of the Earth and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Other great 60s movies: Cool Hand Luke, The Graduate, 2001, Bullitt, The Pawnbroker….but that’s my list. I was 10-18 years old during that decade.

(Til now) I worked at the theater and saw the 2nd half every night after I closed the ticket booth, then came on my day off to see the entire film. I've never been the same! Life-changing

It changed my life into a "hippie chick" i.e., explorer, and I've been researching that event a bit the past few months, so I bought in the DVD a year ago and hadn't seen it since way back then on the big screen. Wanted to see it again but haven't noticed it being shown in all these years. I only have a laptop player & small speakers today, but it's satisfying anyway. So, that was a test to see if you considered it a worthy film! (And you do) "Peace Love and Music, and ONLY peace love & music", as Yasgur says! ☮ ♥🎶 and lots of 🌧 (don't you wish you could do the rain chant & mud runs?!!) I went to every concert I could after I saw it, and many were amazing--especially after I ended up in So. Calif. in 1975
@@popgoesthe60s52 Matt, an article I found recently quotes Roger Daltry as saying that they (i.e. the Who) waited non-druggedly all night Sat until the line-up of musicians was finished. Since the rain had delayed the schedule by about 8 hr, the other musicians performed all night, and the Who went onstage early Sunday morning instead of being the final Sat night act. Roger was so thirsty that he had a cup of tea. They had avoided all the trucked in beverages & water and knew that the water had been spiked but he still got extremely loaded just from 1 cup of tea. I am so anti-drug at this stage of my life that I find those activities appalling now!! But they were the general attitude among the "partiers" (as I call them, aka the "counterculture") who believed, and took the actions, that somehow everyone would benefit from tripping. Therefore everyone who performed or supported the acts was likely "out of it", and this is confirmed by all of the ones I've come across. Perhaps Woodstock comes under the category of a guilty pleasure
A fun presentation that makes me want to see a lot of films! So many great films from so many different genres were referenced. I appreciated that Matt mentioned Lonely Are the Brave, a smaller film and sort of a requiem for the western way of life. Stanley Donan's Bedazzled is still hilarious. Cool Hand Luke, The Time Machine, The Manchurian Candidate, The Monkees Head, Persona & Repulsion are great art films from the time. The 1960s are great for the exploration and boundaries crossed.

Interesting list, Matt. Nice to see the Hitchcock-like (and -lite) "Charade" getting a nod. For my money, many of the greatest films of the sixties came from places other than the U.S. and England--e.g., "8 1/2," "Breathless," "L'Avventura," "The Battle of Algiers," and especially "Persona." As for blanking on the theme song from "Breakfast at Tiffany's," probably you were distracted by the babbling of that watery, flowing thing--what's it called again?--behind you.

My dad and I went to our local theatre to see Shenendoah, in September 1965 (third grade year for me). We both liked westerns and Civil War movies. We figured Jimmy Stewart would be a heroic cavalry officer, or someone similar. Turned out to have kind of a downbeat, antiwar theme. Very good film, though.

Also there are so many New Wave British films from this era, you may of seen some of them, like Accident, starring, Dirk Bogarde and Stanley Baker.

And I Love the music with Simon and Garfunkel. -On that Note: when you watch Midnight Cowboy, watch it at Night. Hoffman and Voight's performances are Top notch! From this period, I like very much the movie cartoon "Yellow Submarine" (1969) with the Beatles. In the field of musicals I would like to quote "West Side Story" (1961). And finally, the David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) with its very good photography.
The Beatles at first refused to have anything to do with more cartoons and so voice actors were hired. But then the lads visited the animation studio and became huge fans and put their 1 min live "stamp of approval" on the amazing cutting edge animation work of art. I was blessed to see the original and refused to see it again unless it was on the big screen. Which Yoko made sure happened for its 50th anniversary 4 yr ago. Omg what a wonderful fun event to be with a theater full of people singing along. I bought the DVD that was made from this film that was hand cleaned frame by frame , plus included the song that was left out of the original American release. When I saw it I thought "I don't remember "Bulldog" in that". Since that was the film that immediately turned me into a huge fan and I only had a cursory knowledge of their songs , that tells you how impactful that film is. Not only for the amazing capture of the time period but it's such an act of outright respect and love for those amazing young men as a gift back to them, a thank you from fans and an homage. They were VERY honored. Later I was a huge part of the Festival of Animation and learned how painstaking and brilliant those writers and artists had to be in order to create the work of art named "The Yellow Submarine" during the 60s. And I just noticed Lawrence, same story as Y.S. Saw it in the theater and thankfully it was showing as a special engagement about 10 yr ago at arts theater here' in San Diego and I organized a group of my friends to go with me. Then I relented and bought 2 copies of the DVDs (one I play and the other is the art version case with insert and kept for my "library" like a first edition book). I also bought the paperback of his autobiography. Wow, what a man, what a story. Highly recommended.

Glad you mentioned overlooked gems-The Train with Burt Lancaster and Brando's One Eyed Jacks which is in my top five best western movies. A fun summer movie is Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation. The 60s were an excellent era for music and film! Oh yeah I almost forgot Hitchcock did make one more great movie - Frenzy 1972. A few quick extras that came to mind: Dr. Zhivago, Barbarella, Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Barefoot In The Park, and Thunderbirds Are Go (1966 movie). By the way, when you mentioned Blow Up, it triggered in my mind some foggy trivia that Antonioni wanted The Who for the band, but they turned him down. The Yardbirds was a follow-up. That might make sense as to why Beck does a Townshend on his equiptment in that film…LOL. Thanks.
Yes, Barbarella would be in my guilty pleasures category I think. I didn't know Thunderbirds had a movie! For Blow Up, Velvet Underground was also considered as was Tomorrow, who actually recorded a song called Blow Up, which is great.
In "Breakfast At Tyfanny's" soundtrack can be found the Henry Mancini's song called "Moon river". There's a scene with Audrey singing this song. In my opinion, another film from this period with another great song is "Roman Adventure" (1962) with the italian theme "Al Di La". Everyone's list is different but I liked your movies. Fun fact, that is Claudine Longet dancing with Peter sellers in 'The Party' she was married to singer Andy Williams until 1975. A year after the divorce she shot and killed her boyfriend olympic skier Spider Sabich, the jury convicted her of negligent homicide, she got a small fine and 30 days in jail, good to be more beautiful, rich and famous than your victim I guess. One movie I would have added at least as a guilty pleasure is "The Magic Christian" Peter Sellers and Youngman Grand (Ringo Star) .
I'd like to recomend two films from 1967 and 1968. The first "Up the Junction" starring Dennis Waterman and having an entire soundtrack written and performed by Manfred Mann. Second "If" starring Malcolm McDowell. A strange film about the British Private School System. Check 'em out!!
Great pick, Gary! I'd also mention another Lindsay Anderson movie, O LUCKY MAN! with Malcom McDowell. It's a surreal 'Pilgrim's Progress' type of film reflecting both the class struggle and how corporations have replaced the old colonial system. The soundtrack by Alan Price is excellent, with each song commenting upon the plot, much like a Greek chorus.

Torn Curtain is very underrated, although there’s no doubt Newman feels a bit out of his element. I’ve still never came around to Topaz but I’ll give it another shot. I think his true last great film was Frenzy, from the next decade.

Rod Steiger with Sidney Poitier in the 1967 movie ''In the Heat of the Night'' and Rod Steiger again in the 1969 movie ''The Illustrated Man'' and who could leave out Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in the 1962 horror film ''Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?''. Charade is a great film and very accessible to view. The movie entered the public domain right away because of a copyright error so free versions are all over the place. However, if you can watch it with the fabulous Henry Mancini soundtrack included, it's worth a few bucks for a rental. Also features one of my favorites Walter Matthau! Bonnie and Clyde makes my list for fav '60's films
Great list, Matt! Favorite films always attach us to our memories of place and time. I was 8 in 1960 and saw a lot of these when they came out, at big screen theaters. I’ll pick a few that I saw in those theaters that are the most memorable; my overall favorites list would be longer and include films like “The Apartment”. OK - “The Mask” (really effective 3D and nightmarish scenes), “Goldfinger”, “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” (what a cast and so entertaining), “Psycho” (freaked me out, but didn’t see it until I was 13), “Yellow Submarine/“King of Hearts” (double bill at the Biograph in Chicago, on acid), “Dr. Strangelove”, “Lord of the Flies”, “2001” in Cinerama, 70mm screen, “Bonnie and “Clyde” (in Aspen, on 10,000 mile VW van driving trip in 68’ with my friend and his parents), “Easy Rider”, “Alice’s Restaurant”, “The President’s Analyst”, “Cool Hand Luke”, “The Hustler.”
I LOVE '60s films, Matt. My favorite decade for movies, hands-down. (Well, I love '50s westerns, and I agree with you....westerns started getting way too violent and "gritty-for-grittiness' sake" style-over-substance starting with the '60s, although I still love some of them like "True Grit"). I love all of the films you mention here - not one dud in the bunch. I even agree with you on the over-viewed or over-rated films you mentioned at the end. But yeah, I love the '60s.....I love the look of the films (that whole '60s look.....just brings back memories of my childhood so much!) and the classier way people dressed and behaved back in the day. A lot of great choices- for me, (top of my head) "The Apartment", "AHDN", "The Graduate", "Bonnie and Clyde", "2001", "Romeo and Juliet", "The World of Henry Orient", "Pink Panther" (Fran Jeffries scene!), "Sound of Music", "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (how could you cramp up on "Moon River"?), "Charade". Framed original 1-sheets for "Tiffany's" and "Charade" on my walls.
All of the films you mentioned are great motion pictures in my book. A Hard Days Night & Goldfinger are all I need though. At that period of my life I really only wanted to be John Lennon or Sean Connery (as James Bond of course). Psycho and Dr. Strangelove are personal favorites as well as Magical Mystery Tour (I know. But it's The Beatles for crying out loud). Very enjoyable segment sir. Hope you enjoyed your mini-vacation.
Great review Matt. I would have to add in 2 Elvis movies, Spinout and Viva Las Vegas. Also the documentary of the Monterey pop festival and lastly the 2 spy movies James Coburn did Our man Flint, In like flint are particularly good.

Matt you couldn't have posted this at a better time! I only just watched Model Shop over the weekend (because of the Echoes in the Canyon doc) and wanted to look at more 60s films to check out. If you'd also be up for making a list of films that capture that 60s California feel, I'd love to see that. I reckon Model Shop and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would make that list for sure.
Great list. I've prob seen 80% of the films mentioned. A few of my faves that were seared into my memory as a child was Carnival Of Souls (1962) and Lord Of The Flies (1963)--RIP Peter Brook and Ship Of Fools (1965). Years later, I've come to appreciate In The Heat Of The Night and Guess Who's Coming To Dinner (both 1967).
Loved this video. Interesting that both To Sir With Love and Goldfinger name drop the Beatles in the films, with the former praising how game-changing the Beatles were and the latter disparaging them.
Casino Royale (1967) has (I think) "Les Beatles" written on the public toilet wall at the beginning of the film - Would be interesting if some nerd could compile a list of Beatles movie references in other films/tv shows from that era!
Some of my favorites from the 1960s are The Incredible Mr. Limpet, The Shakiest Gun In The West (both with Don Knotts), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (with Dick Van Dyke), Once Upon A Time In The West (my favorite western, with Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda), Bikini Beach (favorite Annette/Frankie Beach movie), Easy Come, Easy Go (favorite Elvis film), Help (favorite Beatles film). Also, like you, really like It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World. One of my favorite scenes from that movie is when Buddy Hackett's character is standing in front of the "Big W" (4 standing palm trees growing in a slanted way, to form the letter W). His character faces the trees, then turns to the camera saying, "Everyone's looking for some "Big W". Well, where is it?" The expression on his face (when he realizes he's in front of the "Big W")!
hi matt! hope you're enjoying your vacation...really enjoyed your list as i own 95% of these on vhs, dvd, blue ray but, as i watched i kept thinking- he's going to mention them, i just KNOW! he's going to mention them...if not as favorites, then as guilty pleasures because you're right on point with your list but, no mention of "the ghost and mr. chicken" "the great race" and "those magnificent men in their flying machines" all family favorites. if you haven't seen them, try renting and watch with the whole family, they'll become family favorites too.
Very good call on "Charade". It is one of the great mystery thrillers ever made, and probably Cary Grant's last good / great film. To this day it has been widely considered by film critics, film historians and just film buffs who know their movies (and you'll hear this quote all the time about "Charade"): is that "Charade" is the best (greatest) Alfred Hitchcock movie that Alfred Hitchcock never did. Charade also had those great opening film credits you saw come out from the 1960's. Also: great date movie too.
I recommend you give "The World of Henry Orient" a view, it was a very impactful movie to me as a kid. I watched it again a few years ago and it holds up, but is a coming of age movie, so perhaps it only works if you saw it as a young person first. Great list.

Nice choices. Cept I'm not big on the musicals i.e. Julie Andrews and so on... I was waiting for "Wait Until Dark" and you finally got around to it. And you an Audrey H. fan. Funfact about Thunderball. The aqualung had only been invented 2 or 3 years before the movie was filmed. It must have seemed so futuristic to the contemporary audience.
I saw that movie as a kid, and yes, I was impressed by the re-breather. Goldfinger was just beautiful. Interesting to think that, as a lad, Goldfinger was the first movie Pierce Brosnan ever saw.
Great list! Several of which I’ll try to find. One I thought I’d see on your list is ‘Don’t Look Back’ Pennemakers doc on Dylan’s ‘65 UK tour. My favorites include: Hard Days Night, To Sir With Love, The Battle of the Bulge, The Longest Day, King Of Hearts (Alan Bates in WWI French town abandoned except for residents of local asylum); The Graduate (haven’t seen it in 15 years but I’d watch it again); Goldfinger. Casino Royale is a complete disaster-the only good scene is Woody Allen escaping the firing squad by jumping the wall only to find himself in another firing squad. Midnight Cowboy is pretty good, but the soundtrack is OUTSTANDING imo! Well worth buying!

@@popgoesthe60s52 Easy Rider *was* important for opening up what was possible but also not so far from being just another biker-western-psych flick with Jack and/or Peter and/or Dennis in it. Maybe we could say it was the best of that hybrid genre. I hope you can get to La Dolce Vita. One of the best films ever. The look exchanged between Mastroianni and the young girl toward the end is a moment of heartbreaking cinematic magic.
Moon River was the song you were searching for in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I named my house after that song - love it. A real fun post Matt and I will be looking some of these up. I nominate Planet of the Apes, released March 27, 1968. As for TV shows, Star Trek, Batman, Get Smart, Addams Family, Mr Rogers. As for books, The Godfather. As for comedians, Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin. both started in the 1960s. Just to name a few. Great Times!
Matt: so much I agree with: The Birds, Goldfinger, A Shot in the Dark, and so many more. I have kept a favorite movie list of my top 50 or so movies for almost 50 years. I was a little disappointed that 3 of my top ten were movies you have “seen enough” but one I really think you are missing the boat on is The Wild Bunch….the last western that was needed. The characters, the actors, the music, cinematography…..it is about men who have outlived their time when technology is encroaching….it will end their world…It’s about a lot more than making the violence look more realistic….as it attempted to do at the time. It is about the code of the west: stick by your friends, do the right thing……even if you are not the best of men.
Totally agree with your assessment on The Wild Bunch, Great cast and fantastic directing by the Legendary Sam Peckinpah. (Also check out -Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo García, Top Notch acting by Warren Oates)

Fascinating background story in the making of the film too, that you can get on the 2 dvd Blu-Ray ("The Story of the Swimmer"). You might be able to find it on You Tube. the Swimmer and Seconds have a lot in common: Of which , one point: Both Rock Hudson and Burt Lancaster thought they were the best acting jobs/roles they ever did. Both movies were out just as the 2 were past their "prime". Both movies were HUGE box office failures and are now held upon HIGH regard with fans.
When me and my best friend saw "A Hard Day's Night" in 1964, there were all these young ladies in the theater screaming, just as if they were seeing The Beatles in concert! My friend kept calling out "SHUT UP" while tossing popcorn at them, even though he also kept turning to me and complained that he couldn't understand what The Fabs were saying because of their accents.

I lived in Northampton Mass when "A Hard Days Night" was released and the Father of a guitarist in our fledgling band was the Manager of the Theater. As a result of our connection we arrived at Noon and sat through the film 5 or 6 times.....the final two times being all by ourselves as the theater was Closed at 10 or thereabouts. With each viewing our lives changed a bit more. Within a short time after that "Viewing" a Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar and my Hofner Bass became Family Members. 🍎 #fab

I love Hard Days Night and Help, but also "Ferry Cross the Mersey" with Gerry Marsden, Cilla, the Fourmost , "Catch us if you can" DC5 , "Bunny Lake is missing" starring Kier Dullea and featuring the Zombies, "Saturday Night Out" featuring the Searchers, "The System" starring Oliver Reed (theme song by the Searchers) "These are the Damned" starring Ollie Reed, "Scream and Scream again" starring Vincent Price and Featuring Amen Corner, "Melody" AKA "S.W A.L.K." made in 1970, but featuring 60s music by the Bee Gees and C.S.N. There are so many , we were spoilt for Excellent Quality and interesting themes. Love all 60s Hitchcock & Bond (Her Majesty's Secret Service) . I love your channel, it's right up my street 🎶👍👦👍🎶❤

Do you know these early beat group films " Live It Up " featuring a ton of pre Beatles groups all courtesy of maniac Joe Meek. " Some People " from 1962 young toughs get into music to claen up their act and 1965's " Be My Guest ". All of these feature David Hemmings and two have Steve Marriott pre Small Faces. Are you a fan of " Up the Junction " with Suzy Kendall and music by Manfred Mann ??

"Some People" was filmed in Bristol, you can see how the City looked back then. I like alot of Joe Meek's Artist's particularly the Honeycombs. They had a Magnificent Singer Dennis D'ell, and their first LP was one of the Best albums from 1964.

Omg I’m 61 and I’ve seen all of those movies. I’m one of those ppl who rave about Dr Stangelove. I think I’ve been watching Mad mad mad mad world as long as I’ve been watching movies. I liked the Matt Helm movies too and I’d watch the first Batman movie anytime it’s on. Ditto The great escape. My wife loved the beach blanket movies which about as guilty a pleasure as it gets.lol
Now this is from the 90s but since you were talking about westerns I’d say Tombstone may by the last great western(Val Kilmers Doc Holiday)

Good list! Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is the only major omission I can think of at the moment. Great movie. Another very 60's screwball comedy (although not exactly a great movie) is "What's New Pussycat".
I am so glad you mentioned "The Party" because that movie hardly gets mentioned anywhere. I first saw in the theatre back in the day when I was a little kid. It is very much a period piece and definitely of its time. I still enjoy this movie to this day on DVD.
Just watched "The Party" again, the first time for my wife, a month ago...! Laughed just as loud as the last 6 (?) times before...good medicine for the soul..."Birdie Num Num..."

One thing I like about movies is when I can admire a character. One of my favorite scenes in all of cinema is in Breakfast At Tiffany's in which the two chief characters are in Tiffany's, shopping for something for only ten dollars. The clerk in the store treats them with attentiveness and respect, even after realising they only have ten dollars. Great model for how to treat people. Love that.
A great decade for movies
The Innocents (1961) and The Haunting (1963) are among the best ghost movies ever made, both would be on my list of the 10 best films from the sixties

Love the Innocents! Gothic Horror perfection! One of my favorite ghost stories on film is the 1976 BBC Christmastime special for the Signal-man, which is an adaptation of a Dickens short story. You can find it on youtube, and I highly recommend it. It's a creepy slowburn, but in the best way.

I caught a bit of The Innocents on TV once, very striking and memorable. It was the inspiration for a song on Kate Bush's third album, The Infant Kiss from Never For Ever.

I saw almost all of the films you mentioned. I remember my father took me to the drive in to see "A Hard Day's Night". I think he unexpectedly liked it. Sounds you you had a happy childhood. (Moon River).
Pyscho came out in 1960, when I was 10. Plastic wrap was kind of a new thing at the time, replacing waxed paper for food storage.
So I'm sitting in the theater, during the Saturday matinee, watching Psycho, and when Perkins wraps Janet Leigh in the shower curtain, some girl sitting behind me said, "I guess that's a Sad Bag."

Great list and review. Mad Mad World did have a fantastic sequel in 1979 now disavowed by Speilberg: 1941. Robert Stack is a priceless counterpoint to the original, unequalled SNL stars Belushi, Aykroyd, and Candy. Spectacular dance scene, not to mention the flapjacks! Hard to equal the earnest pathos of Winters, but the Stack v Tracy role offers golden nuance. Belushi is at the very top of his game...."let me hear your guns!"

I had friends that went to find "The Big W" from the movie! They had to scale a huge rocky area to get to it. It's actually on someones property (private home). They were greeted by GUARD DOGS behind the fence surrounding the property and had to make it back down the mountainous area - Covered with cuts and bruises . At that time , part of the "Big W" was gone already. I remember when it was down to just one tree. And that is probably gone now.

My 60s list necessarily includes starting off the decade with Stanley Kubrick’s epic _‘Spartacus’_ (1960) and ending the decade with his _‘2001: A Space Odyssey’…._ And “tucked in-between” must certainly include the equally epic productions of David Lean’s _‘Lawrence of Arabia’_ (1962) and _‘Dr. Zhivago’_ (1965), plus Joseph Mankiewicz’s pageantry epic _‘Cleopatra’_ (1963) and *definitely* Stanley Donen’s brilliant productions of both _‘Charade’_ (1963) and _‘Two for The Road’_ (1967) “highlighting” irreplaceably Stylish-n-Gorgeous Audrey Hepburn!!! 😍
And the “merited” cast in John Frankenheimer’s startling _‘The Manchurian Candidate’_ (1963), and Sinatra's pivotal cast in _'Ocean's Eleven'_ too (1960). And perhaps even the equally “startling” *ramifications* in the original _‘Planet of The Apes’_ (1968) by wonderful Franklin Schaffner…..
On the Westerns front, unquestionably Brando's directorial achievement in _'One-Eyed Jacks'_ (1961) remains forever in my personal #1 Western Slot, while Sam Peckinpah’s remarkable _‘The Wild Bunch’_ (1969) actually "broke new cinematic ground" while laced thru a very well-developed plot of "ethics" and "allegiances", and Richard Brooks’ equally A-Team cast in _‘The Professionals’_ (1966) certainly rate _Right Up There_ *TOO….* IMHO!!! 🤪
And of course, The List could.... _and DOES...._ go *On-n-On-n-On....* within the 60s "peak" of Hollywood's unrivaled Golden Age of cinema!!! 👍= 🎯

I have to agree with most of your list and there are a few you mentioned that I never saw and always wanted to such as Torn Curtain so thank you for that. But as a side note about the pizza delivery- we never had fast food or ate out at a restaurant more than once a year when I was a kid. But every now and then we’d get a pizza delivered and it will always be associated with a happy memory of my childhood. As always great show.

A great list, Matt, Thanks. Like you, I have fond memories of watching all of these movies when I was young. The scene from Dean Martin's "The Enforcer", in which he cavalierly drinks while driving, reminds me of something that happened to me in the late 60s: Four of us teenagers were driving around town drinking beer when a policeman pulled us over. He questioned us, shined his flashlight around the car and saw the open beer bottles that we had hurriedly placed on the floor. The cop told us to be careful and let us go on our way. I guess back then there just wasn't an awareness of how dangerous it was to drink and drive! It was a different time...

Ah Henry Mancini. I loved Charade! Many of the films you mentioned are my favorites of the 60's. Family friendly films we saw in a theater but Peter Sellers, Beatles, Hitchcock, war films, westerns and Bond films were always at the drive-in. My favorite memory was seeing 'Hard Days Night' from the back of a station wagon in my pj's with a friend. Mom popped a brown paper shopping bag full of of buttered corn. Casino Royale was one of the first films I saw on a COLOR TV at my grandparent's house! Wow! When I was a kid the elementary school and our local theater would show a comedy or two for a quarter. Usually a Jerry Lewis or Bob Hope. Popcorn was a dime. Pretty great when you're 8 or9. I will watch anything with Sellers, Grant, Hepburn, or James Garner. Way too many movies to list here. This was a great idea for a video Matt. Brought back some wonderful memories. I just finished watching a couple of Peter Sellers biographies. What a marvelous odd man he was. I do recall the film 'Blow Up' being in the George Harrison biopic 'Living In The Material World' co-produced by Olivia Harrison, covering George working on the soundtrack. All time favorite movie 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. My room was covered with posters and pictures from the film. I had 3 copies of the soundtrack. Spoiler alert: My family is related to Butch and my new grandbaby is named Cassidy. (I'll stop now.) 😆

The Wild Bunch is my favorite western all time, 1969. We went to the movies (us kids) most Saturdays so my fav kids movies include: Journey to the Center of the Earth and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.
Other great 60s movies: Cool Hand Luke, The Graduate, 2001, Bullitt, The Pawnbroker….but that’s my list. I was 10-18 years old during that decade.

(Til now) I worked at the theater and saw the 2nd half every night after I closed the ticket booth, then came on my day off to see the entire film. I've never been the same! Life-changing

It changed my life into a "hippie chick" i.e., explorer, and I've been researching that event a bit the past few months, so I bought in the DVD a year ago and hadn't seen it since way back then on the big screen. Wanted to see it again but haven't noticed it being shown in all these years. I only have a laptop player & small speakers today, but it's satisfying anyway. So, that was a test to see if you considered it a worthy film! (And you do) "Peace Love and Music, and ONLY peace love & music", as Yasgur says! ☮ ♥🎶 and lots of 🌧 (don't you wish you could do the rain chant & mud runs?!!) I went to every concert I could after I saw it, and many were amazing--especially after I ended up in So. Calif. in 1975

@@popgoesthe60s52 Matt, an article I found recently quotes Roger Daltry as saying that they (i.e. the Who) waited non-druggedly all night Sat until the line-up of musicians was finished. Since the rain had delayed the schedule by about 8 hr, the other musicians performed all night, and the Who went onstage early Sunday morning instead of being the final Sat night act. Roger was so thirsty that he had a cup of tea. They had avoided all the trucked in beverages & water and knew that the water had been spiked but he still got extremely loaded just from 1 cup of tea. I am so anti-drug at this stage of my life that I find those activities appalling now!! But they were the general attitude among the "partiers" (as I call them, aka the "counterculture") who believed, and took the actions, that somehow everyone would benefit from tripping. Therefore everyone who performed or supported the acts was likely "out of it", and this is confirmed by all of the ones I've come across. Perhaps Woodstock comes under the category of a guilty pleasure
A fun presentation that makes me want to see a lot of films! So many great films from so many different genres were referenced. I appreciated that Matt mentioned Lonely Are the Brave, a smaller film and sort of a requiem for the western way of life. Stanley Donan's Bedazzled is still hilarious. Cool Hand Luke, The Time Machine, The Manchurian Candidate, The Monkees Head, Persona & Repulsion are great art films from the time. The 1960s are great for the exploration and boundaries crossed.
Yes, I had Head and Repulsion on my larger list, but I made a few cuts. So much great stuff for me to still discover!

Interesting list, Matt. Nice to see the Hitchcock-like (and -lite) "Charade" getting a nod. For my money, many of the greatest films of the sixties came from places other than the U.S. and England--e.g., "8 1/2," "Breathless," "L'Avventura," "The Battle of Algiers," and especially "Persona."
As for blanking on the theme song from "Breakfast at Tiffany's," probably you were distracted by the babbling of that watery, flowing thing--what's it called again?--behind you.

The Manchurian Candidate is really spooky to watch considering that a year later in 63 you have someone like Lee Harvey Oswald killing JFK.

My dad and I went to our local theatre to see Shenendoah, in September 1965 (third grade year for me). We both liked westerns and Civil War movies. We figured Jimmy Stewart would be a heroic cavalry officer, or someone similar. Turned out to have kind of a downbeat, antiwar theme. Very good film, though.

Also there are so many New Wave British films from this era, you may of seen some of them, like Accident, starring, Dirk Bogarde and Stanley Baker.

One that caught my interest and I also got to check out is one that Antony Rotunno mentioned on his podcast with you is The Swimmer with Burt Lancaster.I Agree with The Graduate, Ive seen it enough times as well, even though Kathrine Ross is a delight to watch! And I Love the music with Simon and Garfunkel. -On that Note: when you watch Midnight Cowboy, watch it at Night. Hoffman and Voight's performances are Top notch! Also a Great Psychedelic Warhol-ian party scene at the end of the movie (Kind of Like the Easy Rider Acid trip scene) As for Bullit with Steve McQueen, What is Cool about watching this movie is seeing San Francisco so pristine with No Traffic congestion or Homeless people living on the sidewalks. -So here is my Top 10 List of Movies from the 60's #1.Night Of The Living Dead #2.I Love You Alice B. From this period, I like very much the movie cartoon "Yellow Submarine" (1969) with the Beatles. In the field of musicals I would like to quote "West Side Story" (1961). And finally, the David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) with its very good photography.
The Beatles at first refused to have anything to do with more cartoons and so voice actors were hired. But then the lads visited the animation studio and became huge fans and put their 1 min live "stamp of approval" on the amazing cutting edge animation work of art. I was blessed to see the original and refused to see it again unless it was on the big screen. Which Yoko made sure happened for its 50th anniversary 4 yr ago. Omg what a wonderful fun event to be with a theater full of people singing along. I bought the DVD that was made from this film that was hand cleaned frame by frame , plus included the song that was left out of the original American release. When I saw it I thought "I don't remember "Bulldog" in that". Since that was the film that immediately turned me into a huge fan and I only had a cursory knowledge of their songs , that tells you how impactful that film is. Not only for the amazing capture of the time period but it's such an act of outright respect and love for those amazing young men as a gift back to them, a thank you from fans and an homage. They were VERY honored. Later I was a huge part of the Festival of Animation and learned how painstaking and brilliant those writers and artists had to be in order to create the work of art named "The Yellow Submarine" during the 60s. I wondered why Matt mentioned the others and left Y.S. off his list. Cheers! Thanks for mentioning it
And I just noticed Lawrence, same story as Y.S. Saw it in the theater and thankfully it was showing as a special engagement about 10 yr ago at arts theater here' in San Diego and I organized a group of my friends to go with me. Then I relented and bought 2 copies of the DVDs (one I play and the other is the art version case with insert and kept for my "library" like a first edition book). I also bought the paperback of his autobiography. Wow, what a man, what a story. Highly recommended.

Interesting list. We agree on several. think my favorite ‘60s movie is also one of my top movies of all time - Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I also like Charade and The Birds. One you didn’t mention that I’ve always loved is Two for the Road, with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney. Also, The Children’s Hour, Midnight Cowboy, and many more.
Glad you mentioned overlooked gems-The Train with Burt Lancaster and Brando's One Eyed Jacks which is in my top five best western movies. A fun summer movie is Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation. The 60s were an excellent era for music and film! Oh yeah I almost forgot Hitchcock did make one more great movie - Frenzy 1972. You should check it out Matt.
Another overlooked gem is a Brando western from 1966 called The Appalossa with John Saxon playing the heavy. Pretty good western.

That was a fun watch Matt. I enjoyed it. :- ) Most of your favourites weren’t mine, but many of mine you finally mentioned toward the second half of your list…LOL. A few quick extras that came to mind: Dr. Zhivago, Barbarella, Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Barefoot In The Park, and Thunderbirds Are Go (1966 movie). By the way, when you mentioned Blow Up, it triggered in my mind some foggy trivia that Antonioni wanted The Who for the band, but they turned him down. The Yardbirds was a follow-up. That might make sense as to why Beck does a Townshend on his equiptment in that film…LOL. Thanks.
Yes, Barbarella would be in my guilty pleasures category I think. I didn't know Thunderbirds had a movie! For Blow Up, Velvet Underground was also considered as was Tomorrow, who actually recorded a song called Blow Up, which is great.

In "Breakfast At Tyfanny's" soundtrack can be found the Henry Mancini's song called "Moon river". There's a scene with Audrey singing this song. In my opinion, another film from this period with another great song is "Roman Adventure" (1962) with the italian theme "Al Di La". My favorite James Bond's movie is 1963's "From Russia With Love", with the theme sung by Matt Monro. As always, a great video, my friend Matt. Good to see you!

Everyone's list is different but I liked your movies. Fun fact, that is Claudine Longet dancing with Peter sellers in 'The Party' she was married to singer Andy Williams until 1975. A year after the divorce she shot and killed her boyfriend olympic skier Spider Sabich, the jury convicted her of negligent homicide, she got a small fine and 30 days in jail, good to be more beautiful, rich and famous than your victim I guess. One movie I would have added at least as a guilty pleasure is "The Magic Christian" Peter Sellers and Youngman Grand (Ringo Star) .

I'd like to recomend two films from 1967 and 1968. The first "Up the Junction" starring Dennis Waterman and having an entire soundtrack written and performed by Manfred Mann. Second "If" starring Malcolm McDowell. A strange film about the British Private School System. Check 'em out!!

Great pick, Gary! I'd also mention another Lindsay Anderson movie, O LUCKY MAN! with Malcom McDowell. It's a surreal 'Pilgrim's Progress' type of film reflecting both the class struggle and how corporations have replaced the old colonial system. The soundtrack by Alan Price is excellent, with each song commenting upon the plot, much like a Greek chorus.

Torn Curtain is very underrated, although there’s no doubt Newman feels a bit out of his element. I’ve still never came around to Topaz but I’ll give it another shot. I think his true last great film was Frenzy, from the next decade.

Charade is a great film and very accessible to view. The movie entered the public domain right away because of a copyright error so free versions are all over the place. However, if you can watch it with the fabulous Henry Mancini soundtrack included, it's worth a few bucks for a rental. Also features one of my favorites Walter Matthau! Bonnie and Clyde makes my list for fav '60's films

Great list, Matt! Favorite films always attach us to our memories of place and time. I was 8 in 1960 and saw a lot of these when they came out, at big screen theaters. I’ll pick a few that I saw in those theaters that are the most memorable; my overall favorites list would be longer and include films like “The Apartment”.
OK - “The Mask” (really effective 3D and nightmarish scenes), “Goldfinger”, “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” (what a cast and so entertaining), “Psycho” (freaked me out, but didn’t see it until I was 13), “Yellow Submarine/“King of Hearts” (double bill at the Biograph in Chicago, on acid), “Dr. Strangelove”, “Lord of the Flies”, “2001” in Cinerama, 70mm screen, “Bonnie and “Clyde” (in Aspen, on 10,000 mile VW van driving trip in 68’ with my friend and his parents), “Easy Rider”, “Alice’s Restaurant”, “The President’s Analyst”, “Cool Hand Luke”, “The Hustler.”

I LOVE '60s films, Matt. My favorite decade for movies, hands-down. (Well, I love '50s westerns, and I agree with you....westerns started getting way too violent and "gritty-for-grittiness' sake" style-over-substance starting with the '60s, although I still love some of them like "True Grit"). I love all of the films you mention here - not one dud in the bunch. I even agree with you on the over-viewed or over-rated films you mentioned at the end. But yeah, I love the '60s.....I love the look of the films (that whole '60s look.....just brings back memories of my childhood so much!) and the classier way people dressed and behaved back in the day. Not to mention the music, the cars, the beautiful '60s girls, the whole package. Loved this video, thanks!! Jeff

All of the films you mentioned are great motion pictures in my book. A Hard Days Night & Goldfinger are all I need though. At that period of my life I really only wanted to be John Lennon or Sean Connery (as James Bond of course). Psycho and Dr. Strangelove are personal favorites as well as Magical Mystery Tour (I know. Great review Matt. I would have to add in 2 Elvis movies, Spinout and Viva Las Vegas. Also the documentary of the Monterey pop festival and lastly the 2 spy movies James Coburn did Our man Flint, In like flint are particularly good.
We share the same film tastes....good list...thanks for including "The Misfits" Marilyn Monroe's extraordinary last performance plus I'd add two french films "La Piscine" and Jacque sTati's hilarious film all pantomime "Playtime" set in Paris in 1967 ...good to encourage folks on this side of the Atlantic to enjoy what was made in the UK and Europe in the 60's

Matt you couldn't have posted this at a better time! I only just watched Model Shop over the weekend (because of the Echoes in the Canyon doc) and wanted to look at more 60s films to check out. If you'd also be up for making a list of films that capture that 60s California feel, I'd love to see that. I reckon Model Shop and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would make that list for sure.
I have the Model Shop soundtrack which I love but I've never seen the film. I may do some of the Psych - biker exploitation films in a segment.

Great list. I've prob seen 80% of the films mentioned. A few of my faves that were seared into my memory as a child was Carnival Of Souls (1962) and Lord Of The Flies (1963)--RIP Peter Brook and Ship Of Fools (1965). Years later, I've come to appreciate In The Heat Of The Night and Guess Who's Coming To Dinner (both 1967).

Casino Royale (1967) has (I think) "Les Beatles" written on the public toilet wall at the beginning of the film - Would be interesting if some nerd could compile a list of Beatles movie references in other films/tv shows from that era!

Some of my favorites from the 1960s are The Incredible Mr. Limpet, The Shakiest Gun In The West (both with Don Knotts), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (with Dick Van Dyke), Once Upon A Time In The West (my favorite western, with Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda), Bikini Beach (favorite Annette/Frankie Beach movie), Easy Come, Easy Go (favorite Elvis film), Help (favorite Beatles film). Also, like you, really like It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World. One of my favorite scenes from that movie is when Buddy Hackett's character is standing in front of the "Big W" (4 standing palm trees growing in a slanted way, to form the letter W). His character faces the trees, then turns to the camera saying, "Everyone's looking for some "Big W". Well, where is it?" The expression on his face (when he realizes he's in front of the "Big W")!
hi matt! hope you're enjoying your vacation...really enjoyed your list as i own 95% of these on vhs, dvd, blue ray but, as i watched i kept thinking- he's going to mention them, i just KNOW! he's going to mention them...if not as favorites, then as guilty pleasures because you're right on point with your list but, no mention of "the ghost and mr. chicken" "the great race" and "those magnificent men in their flying machines" all family favorites. if you haven't seen them, try renting and watch with the whole family, they'll become family favorites too.

Very good call on "Charade". It is one of the great mystery thrillers ever made, and probably Cary Grant's last good / great film. To this day it has been widely considered by film critics, film historians and just film buffs who know their movies (and you'll hear this quote all the time about "Charade"): is that "Charade" is the best (greatest) Alfred Hitchcock movie that Alfred Hitchcock never did. Charade also had those great opening film credits you saw come out from the 1960's. Also: great date movie too.
I recommend you give "The World of Henry Orient" a view, it was a very impactful movie to me as a kid. I watched it again a few years ago and it holds up, but is a coming of age movie, so perhaps it only works if you saw it as a young person first. Great list.

So glad you mentioned "The Misfits" & "Lonely Are the Brave" ( hardly anyone does) but also I would have Lawrence of Arabia & Dr. Zhivago on my list . L The Sellers film " I Love You Alice B. Toklas " and the original "Bedazzled" from 1967 would be in my fav. comedies of the 60's as well .

I saw that movie as a kid, and yes, I was impressed by the re-breather. Goldfinger was just beautiful. Interesting to think that, as a lad, Goldfinger was the first movie Pierce Brosnan ever saw.
Great list! Several of which I’ll try to find. One I thought I’d see on your list is ‘Don’t Look Back’ Pennemakers doc on Dylan’s ‘65 UK tour. My favorites include: Hard Days Night, To Sir With Love, The Battle of the Bulge, The Longest Day, King Of Hearts (Alan Bates in WWI French town abandoned except for residents of local asylum); The Graduate (haven’t seen it in 15 years but I’d watch it again); Goldfinger. Casino Royale is a complete disaster-the only good scene is Woody Allen escaping the firing squad by jumping the wall only to find himself in another firing squad. Midnight Cowboy is pretty good, but the soundtrack is OUTSTANDING imo! Well worth buying!

I'm a Hitchcock fan but probably have no need to see The Birds again. @@popgoesthe60s52 Easy Rider *was* important for opening up what was possible but also not so far from being just another biker-western-psych flick with Jack and/or Peter and/or Dennis in it. Maybe we could say it was the best of that hybrid genre. I hope you can get to La Dolce Vita. One of the best films ever. The look exchanged between Mastroianni and the young girl toward the end is a moment of heartbreaking cinematic magic.
Moon River was the song you were searching for in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I named my house after that song - love it. A real fun post Matt and I will be looking some of these up. Add in Where Eagles Dare, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and guilty pleasure Elvis in Viva Las Vegas and Blue Hawaii. You really must watch Midnight Cowboy! Enjoy your break :)

Matt: so much I agree with: The Birds, Goldfinger, A Shot in the Dark, and so many more. I have kept a favorite movie list of my top 50 or so movies for almost 50 years. I was a little disappointed that 3 of my top ten were movies you have “seen enough” but one I really think you are missing the boat on is The Wild Bunch….the last western that was needed. The characters, the actors, the music, cinematography…..it is about men who have outlived their time when technology is encroaching….it will end their world…It’s about a lot more than making the violence look more realistic….as it attempted to do at the time. It is about the code of the west: stick by your friends, do the right thing……even if you are not the best of men.
