    Music of the Spanish Renaissance performed on the Vihuela, a popular instrument of the time.
    Fantasias I - VI from the great collection El Maestro (Libro de música de vihuela de mano intitulado El maestro), the first collection of vihuela music in history.
    Performed on Renaissance Vihuela by Polivios
    Vihuela built by Barbara Ferloni www.apizzico.de
    I have recently been encouraged to start offering lessons via Skype, especially for advanced classical guitar students or classical guitarists who want to segue to historical or ethnic instruments (lute, vihuela, baroque guitar, oud, etc). For more info: www.polivios.net/teach

    What a difference between this rendition and those played on either a Lute or a guitar. I am surprised by the sweetness of the upper register and the richness of the lower notes. Having this recording offers insights into how I might play this fantasia on a classical guitar.

      The difference would be greater if the performer played with 16th century technique and style, and not modern classical guitar technique and aesthetic.

      @@taylordiclemente5163 You'r right. It's always difficult for former guitarist to learn a new position for the right hand and play without nails, but it's worth the effort for the quality and the difference in sound.

      @Timopeo But this is not a lute, but a vihuela, and in order to obtain that sweet and delicate touch it is mandatory to use the proper technique: figueta castellana. The thumb under, not over the other fingers.

    Hard to imagine it was that instrument that was the basis for all modern guitars.

    • @taylordiclemente5163
      @taylordiclemente5163 2 роки тому

      That is not entirely accurate. The vihuela de mano faded out by the end of the 16th century. Meanwhile the four-course guitar got bigger and lower-pitched and gained a fifth course in the 17th century, then gained a sixth course in the 18th and switched from double to single courses. From that point on it kept growing until it reached the present Torres shape.

    • @taylordiclemente5163
      @taylordiclemente5163 2 роки тому

      It's possible, however, that, while this evolution was happening in Spain and Europe, that an instrument like the Italian cousin of the vihuela de mano, the viola da mano, reached the new world, as the tres puertorriqueño bears the same distinctive shape.

    So is it tuned just like a 12 string? Doesn't sound like it. Why wouldn't it be? What's the purpose of the double strings?

    • @Neoprototype
      @Neoprototype 4 роки тому +3

      It's a re-entrant tuning in fourths, depending on the region / composer they didn't have the 440 tuning we have nowadays, they tuned them according to their needs or the capacity of the instrument. However the fourths relationship between the notes is preserved and it's a vestige of the Arabian tunings were it is derived from. The purpose of the double string is to give it stronger sound (they used gut strings) and to introduce a pleasant dissonance, that's why some of the strings are octave pairs rather than unison.

    • @MarkHoemmen
      @MarkHoemmen 4 роки тому +3

      What would be the G course on a 12-string guitar, is an F# course here (relative tuning, not absolute -- vihuelas might have G or A as their lowest string instead of E). The same strings that would be octave pairs on a 12-string are octave pairs here too, but in the opposite order. If you strum from lowest to highest, on the 12-string guitar you'll hit the higher string of each pair first, but on this vihuela, you'll hit the lower string of each pair first. The point of the octave pairs is to help the lower gut strings sound louder -- low gut strings aren't as "bright" as and have less sustain than low metal strings or even the low metal-wound nylon strings on a classical guitar, so the high string helps them ring more.
