i'm surprised someone asked about single coils + high gain and glad they did. billy corgan, j mascis, kevin shields, among many, get ***tremendously*** high gain sounds out of single-coil strat/jazzmaster pickups. incredible tones.

I was at a jam session yesterday and asked the other guitarist who had a nice looking schecter if I could “have a shwang”, and he looked at me blankly, with no idea what I meant - my heart was broken just a little bit.

Mick: I also use the Supro Trem, BUT... I actually mainly use it as an overall tone sweetener, so it's always on. It just sounds so good with my setup as a sort of pre-amp. I place it after my drives with the gain between 7 and 9pm depending on mood, and before my echos.
Mod tip for anyone wanting to do this: I replaced the Depth knob with an MXR/Dunlop style with the rubber cover so I can roll in the trem with my foot when I want some. Easy.

On the subject of songwriting rigs: I've designed for myself a "fly rig" type pedalboard designed to be used for practice, demo recording, and even direct to PA live performance, for both guitar and bass. My plan is to use mostly mini pedals from tc electronic and One Control, a DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim Deluxe, and a Radial J48 Stereo DI (one channel for instrument DI/safety track for later re-amping, the second channel for mono to the PA). The whole thing will fit on a flat board small enough to go into a standard 22x14x9 rollaboard suitcase and leave plenty of room for clothing and toiletries.

Massive thank you gents!! This chord was literally haunting me. Majorly frustrating to try and play it when testing out gear and never be able to find it.
I can completely see why its your favorite chord Mick. I love the sound of it and when hearing it with delay....as Dan would say....EPIC!! Its just one of those chords that makes something that already sounds great...sound even better!
Now I have to go practice F add9 for the next month or so!! I am so happy to have this video to refer back to if I dont get the sound right! TPS....its not just about Pedal and Amp education!
    Cheers
    Rob

Dan, if you're going to build Fuzz Faces with different guts, please use the same enclosure so we can take the visual prejudice out of our listening. A Vlog on chord harmony would be way cool. And if you do a show on phasers, it'd be great if you could get a LongAmp Custom Shop Da Funk Orange ... from the maker of Dan's Roxanne flanger. Cheers!

  • @forgediron
    @forgediron 5 років тому

Gents, a suggestion for Dan's direct rig ----- Guitar -> distortion, overdrive, etc -> Effectrode Blackbird 600 ohm bal out -> mixer. For the wet side - Effectrode line out -> reverb - delay, etc -> ADA GCS-5 analog speaker sim -> mixer. You get a psuedo wet dry by using the transformer out for dry and the 1/4" output running to the wet stuff. Each is fed into separate mono channels on the mixer. Had to swap the phase on the bal out and add a little top end at the mixer input. That could also be handled by another GCS-5 or perhaps both speaker sims could be done with a single GCS-6, it's two GCS-5's in the same enclosure. The transformer out on the Blackbird is balanced so I just swapped the wires in the connector to change the phase. The Effectrode Blackbird is a great preamp, I hope you guys take a look at it some day. The tube tone is absolutely in there.
Thanks for all great shows! Cheers!

One of the reasons I love my Palmer Pedalbay (that isn't just the price compared to Pedaltrain) is that you can adjust the rail spacing on the "rear" rails (furthest from your feet) as some of the pedals I don't tend to switch frequently, and thus can be put at the back, happen to be smaller.

I think that chord that Mick plays there is the same one that I play in the chorus of my song "June 28th". All those pretty maj7, sus2/add9, and sus4 chords are a staple for old shoegazers like me.

    +1 for chord harmony vlog!
+1 for hi-gain with single coils, i sometimes play hi-gain with a center block Gretsch with Filtertrons, i have to dial it in differently than my EMG-loaded Explorer but it works, was already wondering about single coils since strats were somewhat popular in early metal.
And i agree, there is no perfect pedalboard on the market but since pedalboards are a very personal thing it's hard to design a board that fits all possible needs. I build my own 2-floor pedalboard from wood and i have to completely rebuild it every few weeks because i want something a little bit different, in that perspective i can't even design the perfect board for myself.

Case in point regarding surface mount: The Benson Preamp. You’d think it was full of paper in oil caps and turret board by the sound of it, but it’s 100% SMD. Benson makes hand wired boutique amps so you’d expect the same of his pedals, but in this case he actually thought the SMD version sounded better. Just goes to show that if something’s designed to sound a certain way it doesn’t matter how big or small the components are. It’s 100% design. The Kingtone Minifuzz is phenomenal too and lives quite happily with my RCA Sunface.

Three things. First I don't really consider a mini fuzzface a mini pedal it's just proper size, I would never buy a large fuzzface for space reasons. Second I would love a chord harmonies vlog Dan. Lastly did you know Ariel Posen played the TPS outro riffon an Andertons video for Hansen Guitars released the same day as this VCQ?

I think mini pedals are best deployed strategically, for saving a few inches here or there rather than as part of a full-blown "mini 'board extravaganza." I placed my Mooer ElecLady on the edge of my Pedaltrain Jr where it's all metal underneath. In addition to having Velcro on the bottom, I tied some light string around it to help with support and keep it steady. Works like a charm!

  • @eking9321

4:36 "It's all in your head" - a good analogy (IMO!) is when you see a full moon rising -- it always looks HUGE ... but it isn't it's the very same size in the sky as it is whe it's moved far into the sky. It's all in your head ... but the perception can't be denied! True story. Same for ears as eyes, I reckon.

It’s great to see you guys moving beyond your initial brief of just discussing pedals. I like the chord harmony vlog idea and have enjoyed the other repair and technical vlogs. My favourite episode of all remains your visit to play the vintage Fender guitars. That was awesome and I go back to it regularly to reference the touchstone tones. Stealing an idea from Josh of JHS, would you consider referencing an album or track performance at the end of episodes that acts as an example of the sounds or effects you have been discussing?

I'm a big fan of using a valve preamp into an IR cab simulator. There's lots of uses for this if you can get it right. I've compared the Mooer Radar to the Hotone CAB and prefer the CAB because it has more controls on the unit than the Radar does which I find makes it easier to fine tune. It also comes with 100 built in IR's which of course you can add to with 3rd party IR's.

    Dan,
when you build the circuit, try it with carbon film, metal film and metal oxide resistors. You will find each sounds different.
Similar can be said for capacitors. yellow film caps are very different from brown caps which are different to oil and paper.
it wont cost you more than 15minutes and 4quid
Please give it a go and then re-evaluate whether a resistor is doing the same job. they do but with different outcomes.

hi guys, love the show! there's nothing wrong with mini pedals, but the issues i find with them are things like hitting the button (i use a qmx4 though ;) ) and you don't save much space because of the awkward power cables and how they have to weave in and out of the pedalboard. it drives me mad! i still love my cheap mini pedals. they're not the same as the things they're trying to be, they're their own thing!

Great show, thanks a lot! If you will look again to small pedals, you may want to take a look on the Japanese „one control“ stuff if you can get hold of those - I really dig the sound and feel of the ones I have (reverb, tubescreamer, compressor, trem) and I think you never had those on your show.

I met Mick at the show and told him how my Dad ordered a 'fuzz is all you need' size 14 year years old t-shirt for my 32nd Birthday - bit of a stonehenge spinal tap moment when putting it on - i only told him the story as i thought it was quite funny that i ended up wearing a crop top, and first thing he said was to get in touch and he'll sort me out with the right size.... its obvious he's a decent bloke he is (as im sure Dan is too) but it just showed just how much they actually care for the fans of the show. From Mick's Vlog the only thing the guys could do better would be to build a room in a room studio with better acoustics. Unfortunately the room is the room... and this is true for most of us. Just a big thanks to TPS:
We record a lot of young aspiring guitarists at our studio and you guys have really helped me a lot with finding tones that suit their original music with the growing collection of pedals we own. You guys are also bang on regarding all the side-info you provide on the show... some examples: wet/dry recording, EQ and speaker combinations, things that matter in a studio.
What would your suggestion be on a do-it-all delay that's easy enough for an ogre like me and an artist with no experience on the pedal to use??? #Valontemuch?

+1 on a Dan Master Class on his amazing chordal style of playing, which often leaves me slack jawed and wondering how on earth to play that way. I love his approach, and I really appreciate the fact that you both play so differently but in such a complementary way - that is, for me, one of the very best things about TPS.
On another subject, inspired by the question in this VCQ about any pedal sounding awesome in the right hands and context: I wonder often, when you guys are producing these amazing sounds, how those amazing sounds wind up sounding in a band mix or a recorded track. You talk about this sometimes, but I'm sure many people have had the experience of finding a really killer sound in their room which sounds totally different (not in a good way) at band practice or in a club with different acoustics.

Mick, I hear you liked the Aynsley Lister Signature Amp from Rift then. Spent a good hour on and off playing through it Sunday. Amazing amp.

I use those chords a good bit and had no idea what they were. I would love love love to see a video that would expand my chord knowledge.

If you are going to do another show on phasers, I recommend taking a look at Mr. Black's Twin Lazers. It's a really nice stereo 4-6 stage phaser, and if you don't want to run it in stereo you can run it into itself doubling the staging.

Dan, YES! Do a vlog on chord harmony. I know it might not be true to the typical tps topic, but I’m sure there are enough fans of tps (like me) that would enjoy and benefit from from hearing your perspective.
