I have my favorites. I like shooting 6.5 CM because it shoots very much like .308 out to 3-400 yards but it just so smooth and the recoil is so tame. I love my .308’s because the round is just so good all around for hunting out to 400 yards, has so many offerings from bolt actions to military styled rifles and any shop that has any ammo will have .308. I shoot a lot of 5.56 because I have AR’s and a Mini and is so cheap to shoot. I just got into .300 AAC because it is great in carbines and has a bullet viable for hunting deer and pigs and you can reuse your AR lowers and Mags. It is also a bit more precise than 7.62x39. Lastly 7.62x39 due to my interest in the Russian guns. And it is still cheap to shoot.

speaking of 300 AAC, I wonder how well that 8.6 BLK going to be. That's supposed to be the real hunting cartridge of the family.

Interesting and informative as usual sir. My 30 06 is still my go to, yes I'm an old guy lol. It wouldn't be my selection to go grizzly hunting, but I'll take it for moose and pack 220 grain in a spare clip just in case. If I wanted to shoot paper or vermin I would buy a 22-250, or maybe. 223.

Id have to say the 30-30 winchester and the 45-70 govt should be on that list. There are millions of rifles chambered for the 30-30 winchester, and at one time it was the most popular hunting cartridge in north america.

Funny fact…if you get on numerous state hunting websites, especially Alaska…they recommend only the most seasoned shooters bring anything more than a 30-06. They highly recommend the 30-06 for all North American game including elk and moose.
It’s said that the 30-06 has the most recoil the avg shooter can shoot accurately. Now if you start having a brick of a rifle built, or add a muzzle break that could change that of course.
Although, then you have the blast from the muzzle breaks some people can’t take. Which leads to poor shooting.
Now days with most scopes having some sort of ballistic turret, a laser beam isn’t really necessary. Even a 30-06 zeroed at appx 238yds can shoot anything 0-275ish yard with no hold overs etc.

Most popular cartridge of the past 116 years is the 30-06.
Still the best all round cartridge for everything in Africa excluding the Big 5 even though it's killed everything Africa has to offer.
    Edit
On the farm we had 3 choices in rifles when we hunted.
    22LR, 243 Win and 30-06.
The 243 Win killed a lot of animals but the 30-06 was my go to rifle.
I have killed a lot of game with it and it has never let me down. I own a lot more rifles now but the 30-06 is still the rifle I grab whenever I go hunting. My June 2022 hunt includes springbuck, gemsbuck, warthog and eland. The only rifle I considered was the 30-06. I like my 300WM, 6.5CM etc. but they are safe queens when it comes to hunting. All the new kids on the block will always be measured against the 30-06 but in my (biased) opinion they will always fall short. My wooden stock Sako 30-06 has not let me down in 30 years of hunting African antelope and I doubt that it will start failing me just because there are new calibers. If there is anything that a 30-06 running 165gr Nosler Accubonds at around 2850fps wont kill, I have not encountered it yet.

I have reviewed 6.5 creedmore and 6.5 PRC and I like some of their points, but don't really need them. My 7mm Rem Mag is my goto long range hunter, I have a 6.5 grendel AR that handles shorter mid range deer and varmints and the 308 is being set up as a do all. I've got loads with 110 gr. shorties that can be used for lighter game, subsonics with 190 gr. for suppressed silent close deer hunting and 200 gr. long range, that work on Elk size up to 450 yards. Every new cartridge that comes out is the next best thing ..
The 30-06 ,is a proven hunting cartrige been around since 1906 and still popular for a reason ..won't wear your barrel out and shoots up to bear stopping pieer 240 grain woodleigh bullets
When will it stop? Until you're using ray guns ?...hunting should be just that ..where it takes some sweat and effort to take home some game.
Shooting animals at a mile away takes everything personal out of the hunt.hunters today are just plain lazy
You aren't much if a hunter if you can't get within 6 football fields away from a deer or am elk and put some effort into the stalk .
They wanna sit with a 90 power spotting scope and kill animals at 1500 yds ..that is not hunting it's sniping .I have no respect t for that
You've stopped having the fair chase factor involved in hunting
Most of you couldn't even identify a deer or elk bed or hoe fresh a track is
Or how fresh scat is .
It'd just sad all these lazy ultra long range hunters have lost what hunting is all about .it's being 1 on 1 with nature and being on its terms

7-08 was always considered a "girl gun" around here. I have no idea why. I don't hunt much, but try to shoot when I can.
I went on an impromptu hunting trip with a buddy last year. I borrowed his loaner (intended for girls that he brings to his camp). I shot it twice the afternoon before. It was dead on.
I dropped the first buck that I had taken in years the next morning. It was about a 200 yard shot, which is kind of far in my area, for deer.
I got a model 700 in that caliber as soon as I got home. (And two boxes of ammo that I owed my buddy).
I love it. It's definitely an underestimated and underappreciated round. I hope that it never catches on. I have found ammo when everything else was pretty much wiped out on more than one occasion.
I was also eyeballing a nicely setup AR at my favorite gun store chambered in 7-08. It was a little bit out of my price range. When tax returns came in, I rushed to scoop it up. It was gone. My frickin boss had bought it the day before!

Why wouldn't you want it to be more popular (I own one fyi, it's great) ? In rifle cartridges, popularity equals more ammo, options and development and a future. What hurts a cartridge is not being popular. Try finding multiple options for.257 Roberts or .260 rem. Great calibers but not very popular so there's no reason for companies to put money into them.

I was halfway kidding about the 7-08. But it does seem to be in that sweet spot as far as popularity goes. Like I said before, I have found it on shelf more than once, when .308 and 30-06 (two extremely popular and common cartridges) were picked clean.
I have a couple of guns that are chambered in .308. One is my "main" hunting rifle. During ammo scares, it gets scooped up really quick. The 7-08 is still there.
It's kind of like the old addage "you will always be able to find 9mm. It's everywhere".
During the last ammo shortage we all learned that's not necessarily the case. All of the popular rounds are the first to go when people start to panic buy.

    Absolutely unreliable data!
Search engine optimization and custom rifle chamber inquiries means nothing, these findings yield small percentages.
Ammunition purchase data these days don't include what people actually want. If all you do is use factory ammunition then you're at the mercy of available ammunition therefore not reliable data.
7mm reloaders are screaming for available bullets! Bullet manufacturers don't seem to be offering 7mm bullets. Where are the 7mm bullets for 7mm-08 Remington, 7x57 Mauser and 280 Ackley Improved cartridge reloaders that are extremely popular?
.338 caliber rifle cartridges (338 Federal, 338-06 A-Square, 338 Winchester Magnum, 340 Weatherby Magnum, 338 RUM and 338 Lapua Magnum) to name a few are incredibly popular.
Rifle sales? Again firearm manufacturers are pushing the latest fad. Your findings have zero meaning.
6.5 Creedmoor along with your doomed 6.8 Western factory ammunition are meant for target shooting not big game. Long high BC bullets produced in factory 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.8 Western are not properly constructed bullets for taking big game.

I'm not sure the custom rifle list is a good metric. Another list that would be interesting (but nearly impossible to compile) would be a list of custom rifle (or stock rifle) chamberings that people eventually have re-chambered to something else. I've heard .28 Nosler is a very common round for people to have re-chambered because it wasn't what they expected, or because they felt the price of components and ammo was too costly and/or component selection and availability was too limiting. Same goes for other PRC/Weatherby/Creedmoor/whatever rounds as well. From gunsmiths I have talked to, those rounds have a higher percentage of people having them changed to something else over time. So, while a list can be compiled for custom rifle sales, it's not really a true indicator of customer satisfaction and true popularity. Because how truly popular are any one of those rounds if they have a higher incidence of being re-chambered?
As far as ammo and rifle sales, I am actually surprised more people are buying more .30-06 than .308. Given the amount of platforms that .308 is available in, I would have assumed .308 would be selling more than .30-06 on a sheer volume basis. Especially given there seemed to be a bit more of an ammo shortage with .30-06 than .308 during the pandemic. As a .30-06 fan myself, seeing it outsell .308 is actually kind of heart-warming and reassuring in a way, given that .30-06 is pretty much a hunting-only round, which really goes to show just how popular it still is with hunters. It's just perennially a great and effective round for so many species and applications.

In Europe we are going led free soon. On the British fieldsports Channel they tested the led free 22lr and they saw That it is Not accurate at all. Ist This Trend the end of the 22lr? What small caliber would be an accurate led free caliber (22mag, 22hornet, .17,…) could you test it?

I'm sick of mfg chambering the same 4-6 cartridges because they're all the hot-thing on the web. There's no variety available because of social media and capitalism. Yay.

6.5 CM? Bull cookies. Of course that is YOUR favorite so it has to be #1. I think your numbers and choices are 💩.

That list of rifle sales explains the high numbers of used 300 Win Mag for sale used. Too damn much rifle for most folks. I always wonder who’s putting them into that caliber…

So many people buy the hype! 6mm Remington ballistics beat 6.5’s and .243’s. Too bad you can’t buy 6mm Remington ammo anymore.

Surprised how many in the US don't reload. Must be more hunters/more casual shooters. In the UK most people reload but factory ammunition is also expensive.

Guilty. Just bought a first rifle in 6.5cm.
If 6.5 prc, have fun with the 1000 round barrel life

Why don’t you talk about ammo you get now it’s bad enough just trying to find 270,30-06 and even 308 good luck with all these new ones

When I had my 6.5 prc I couldn’t find ammo for it so I traded it off, now I see ammo every where. I just picked up a 243 and no one had ammo for it, did score a couple of boxes.
