garden update | storing onions for long term

- The most important factor to consider if you want to store garden fresh onions long-term is variety! Some varieties just store better than others. This year I grew two varieties of onion plants from Dixondale Farms - blush and Patterson.
Blush onions are a cross between yellow and red, popular in France. They store for 5-6 months so I will mostly use these first.
I also grew Pattersons, a yellow onion with 8-10 month storage potential, so I'm hoping I can stretch these until early next summer when I can start picking spring onions to use as I need them before next year's July harvest.
I grew about 300 onions for our family of 6. We will see if I need to adjust next year, if anything I will need more. I'll be using quite a few of these when I make salsa so any that didn't look good for storing, I just set to the side and will use over the next month or two in my salsa and sauce making.
All of my aprons are from Etsy.
My red glasses (which were falling off when I was talking because it was 100 degrees and I was sweating after braiding!) are from Eye Buy Direct, I save a ton of money ordering them online rather than buying them at the eye doctor.
Most of my dresses are from Neuflora, they curate a natural capsule every month which makes shopping easy for me: www.neuflora.c...
I love that you let your hens become mamas - it’s a great trait to keep on a homestead!
You are so blessed by everything you have, I'm so happy for you! There's always something to do at a farm and you have 4 children. You are a wonderful lady!❤
Bahaha! Episiotomy on the birth of onions from the row cover!! I love it! My small flock I have also had as many as 5 broody at a time, & still want to be broody, I had to put my foot down and told them we raised enough chicks this spring!
I’m about there!! I think after this hatching they’re going to be done!
This is where I ordered my onions from, too, they did so great! I'm going to order more next year now that I've done it once and understand how to. Word of caution to anyone reading this and thinking you can buy the onion sets at walmart or lowes, you can't, they won't grow, I tried two years from each place and never got anything larger than two tiny pingpong ball sized onions from 50+ sets each time. Order from Dixondale!
I absolutely LUVVVV your lifestyle. Never been afraid of hard work myself. I’m sure it’s very rewarding and good for the soul. 🥰
Thanks for the storage onion varieties. Always searching for some that last a long time
Very nice congratulations on your harvest. I wish there were more women like you in this world.
So cool on
Onions. I’m so surprised the chickens don’t get into the onions as they lay out in the yard. Glad to see another vlog. Happy summer! ❤️❤️
Chickens will generally avoid onions
Your salad looks so good!!! The onions are so nice looking.
How do you get them to store for so long without molding or going bad?
Tell me about your twine holder and scissors! That is so cute and looks like something really handy to keep around the kitchen!
I managed to brush my teeth today. 🤣
I'm inspired to stop being a slug and be a superwoman like you.
I dont know if i will ever get far enough into my farm life dreams to braid onions but if i do (*fingers crossed*) i hope i can do it as beautifully as you just did lol the process kind of reminds me of french braiding which ive never mastered so hopefully its easier than it looks lol
Enjoyed your video Steph. Beautiful onions that you grew !! That is awesome. 😊
Need to know where your apron is from 😍
Those onions are a beautiful thing! Do you ever do a pantry tour?!
I’ve got to make space to grow onions and potatoes next year! Red onions are my favorite.
You are an inspiration! :)
Onions are one of the easiest things to grow, you’ll love it!
I just love your videos! So so helpful ❤
Thank you!
Giving your weed barrier an episiotomy cracked me up lol
So enjoyed this 😊 Thank you for sharing with us.
Hot here too! I’m not the best with onions for some reason. Too much water possibly. One garden I don’t water as much thrives for onions!
Ps i look forward to seeing the baby chicks i was glad to see you let them keep the eggs. You will need to use more eggs!!!
Great harvest 😊
I don’t grow onions, but always wanted to know how they made those braids. Thank you!
Beautifully done!❤
Absolutely look forward to your videos ❤
Hello i like your video and the fact that you are harvesting so many onions. I tried growing onions for the first time this year, but from i planted them the tops fell flat, then they came back up and now they are flat again. I don't see any onion growing under the ground. Do you what's wrong? I pplanted them all over my garden, there are areas that get little sun and other areas that get a lot of sun and they are all behaving the same way!
I will be growing onions like this next year! This years onions were a disaster.
Enjoyed the video 😊
Thank you!
Very interesting so when you hang them in the basement there is nothing else you need to do to them?
Passing through. Where are you located? What day length are you?
Wonderful thanks for sharing 👍 ❤❤
very informative about onions. Did you start with store bought seeds?
How do they taste? The blush are so pretty!
Thank you!, very interesting!
I also want to know where you get your work aprons/dresses from. Do you make them?
Thank you for the tips ❤
Do you have a link for your apons?
Love this!!
Do you grow your onions from seed, starts, or sets?
How do you make it last for a year ??
Fantastic
Your chickens don't destroy your garden?
I have to ask the dumb question: when u go to use onions from the braid, do u take from the top or bottom? I'm assuming they're hung from the strands' ends. Plz correct me if I'm wrong
Bottom!
Where do y’all live? It’s so beautifully green!
In the Ozarks of Missouri, it is beautiful here!
O
Ill pay you 100 iranian rials for the lot , take it its a good deal .
Got a bag of red onions for 5 bucks from Fred Myers, that's about as much work as I am willing to invest. 😂
