In an interview with the BBC published on April 6, Stoltenberg said "It was up to Ukraine to choose when and under what conditions to seek peace with Russia." Zelensky should know his place and obey his master. If NATO decides he'll negotiate then he'll either negotiate or continue without additional support only to surrender unconditionally a bit later.
Zelensky will come to the table once Ukraine loose Nikolaev and Odessa.
When Russia liberates Odessa, Zelensky will not go to any table, because he knows he will be the meal, he will run as fast as he can to hide for the rest of his life. Zelensky is not the legal president of Ukraine any more, so he is nobody Russia can discuss legal matters, Zelensky has no legal powers recognised by international law. And Russia always goes by the book, by the rule of law.
So Zelensky is a non starter for these two reasons. The west are so stupid, they still do not understand this.

NATO were testing Russia's strength and capabilities and now they understand that Russia is stronger than even the days of Soviet union. Russia is a tried and tested real superpower of the world and no one can dispute that. Russia is fighting against the collective western world and they're losing the war hence suggested that Zelensky should make a peace plan with Russia. NATO didn't expect that Russia could be still firing more than expected number of missiles into Ukraine. I remember UK saying Russia has runout of ammunition, what a joke it was. I'm really optimistic that Zelensky would come to his senses rather than being fooled by NATO

The issue that no one is talking about is that Putin has 5 more years as president while Zelensky doesn't (if he holds elections) as the polls are already against him. So most likely, he might start the negotiations but wouldn't end it. A regime change might see a president more aligned towards Russia.
Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity.
In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.
If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy.
Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements.
Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time.
Russia's national security was compromised once nato began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining nato was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns.

The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present.
Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave.

I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written.
