For more budget options I would go for viewsonic... The little parrot is basically the only reason, but for higher end monitors I would either go for Asus or Samsung...

Apple really just needs to stop being in denial about their limited UI scaling. All MacOS needs is a 1.5x scale version of all UI elements and suddenly 4K monitors would look perfect.
There are so many easy, small things like this that Apple could do, but absolutely refuses to do for whatever reasons. And considering the company is worth like 3 trillion dollars, apparently it’s working for them. :/
Apple did mess around with non-integer scaling on older OSes (Around the 10.3-10.4 days). I think they moved away from doing so because that would mean a lot of work for developers. And considering how easy it is to just double-scale everything like in iOS…
The LG Ultrafine 27" 5k is already basically 1:1 with a Mac studio panel, and it's currently on the market. Shocked you don't have one to compare, we have 3 deployed in a professional photo studio and they are getting great feedback.
@@yeetmaster9010 to some, yes. If you want your desk to look nice, the LG displays aren’t cutting it though. Also the displays had terrible problems the first years after release. I have no idea if they fixed those problems, but I won’t be spending money on them because of that.

Samsungs monitor comes with a far more complete package and already has things that apple charges extra for. Such as a height adjustable stand or a matte screen or even the fact that the studio display is known for bricking itself. And above that you get a far superior camera too
Mac users' way of thinking are a lot different than the usual Apple/iOS users'. If the other product fit the bill perfectly for them, they'll definitely go non-Apple

Samsung has the smart app/tv functionality which I 'do not want' I hate targeted advertisements. Samsung has inferior speakers... I much prefer the sound quality of the ASD. Samsung's monitor is still wobbly = Fail Samsung monitor looks objectively inferior to the ASD beautiful all aluminum frame Samsung has lower nits of brightness = fail Samsung's Infinity Display is overpriced.... There are apps that try to fix the situation of macOS looking worse than it needs to on non-hiDPI monitors - trying those programs would be an interesting follow up to this video. SwitchResX is one.

I recently got my first ever Mac (M1Pro MacBook Pro), and text sharpness on my 24" 1440p monitors was driving me crazy! Last week I discovered an app called Better Display which has helped a lot. Apple really needs to figure this kind of stuff out.
Ngl, you got a real laugh out of me when saying that Apple had the was the correct ppi. Then I got to thinking and yeah, we should prioritize ppi, that’s a smarter way of measuring resolution because as you later stated, for 4k the pixel amount stays the same and the screen size can change and will give varying sharpness. That’s why I like MAC address!
Appreciate the detailed review, and your point on matching the 218ppi pixel density with macOS. However, let me share my personal standpoint. That level of pixel density leads to much smaller on-screen elements on 27-inch monitors, which in my case, causes eye strain and reading discomfort. Given this, I found my sweet spot with dual 4K monitors running at 200% scaling. This setup not only ensures comfortable viewing and reading, and is still quite sharp, but also provides extensive screen space, much more than a single 5k monitor, while costing less than a single 5K Apple display setup.
4K at 200% scaling is just wasting an enormous amount of content you can fit. Given they are 27", 150% or at least 175% still give reasonably large UI elements while fitting a ton more content compared to 1440p at 100% scaling.
Exactly my thoughts. 218 ppi is too dense. We should be making larger panels and simply placing them slightly further away. There is enough room on most desks.
And while we're at it: Computer monitors should not be a 16:9 aspect-ratio. Wide-screen is ideal for televisions. But 4:3 is better for almost all tasks on a computer. And also works as 3:4 when rotated. And enables more ergonomic multi-monitor setups.

The 150% or 175% scaling is a non-integer value, results in macOS having to make approximations when rendering. This can lead to a slightly less crisp image as compared to pure 200% scaling. At 200% scaling, macOS renders the screen at twice the resolution in both dimensions, so each pixel in the lower-resolution 'image' cleanly matches up with a 2x2 block of pixels on the higher-resolution screen. This results in clean lines and text that's free from blur or distortion.
Some of what you mentioned about scaling isn't entirely true. Nowadays scaling is performed on the display although it can be performed on the gpu. It's more about choosing resolutions that scale niceley with Apple's resolutions to avoid uneven scaling artifacts. This is less prevalent on Windows machines as they are more flexible about different displays and scaling and have cleartype.
Not on MacOS, you will have performance degradation with the current OS implementation, including Sonoma that's in Beta. For most tasks it may be fine, but for a more demanding professional usage it's easy to notice.
Unless you want to use an OLED or QD-OLED on Windows, in which case it renders font somewhat poorly since the sub-pixel layout is different on those display types.

most people i know struggle with a 32" 4k display with 100% scaling. one of the most common issues I have seen while supporting large companies when upgrading monitors, is people complaining about text being too small , and of course the scaling in windows is rubbish... so higher PPI without proper scaling is lost on most.
This is mostly an education issue (and windows should default to maybe 150% scaling at that size+rez). I am aware some software won't scale correctly (but it SHOULD be larger, if soft), but majority of apps that most people use does scale. I'm a pro software dev and I use 24" 4K with 200% scaling. 1440p @ 24" is just not sharp enough.
You should mention refresh rates too, after working on a 120hz monitor for years I couldn't go back to 60hz so I went with 4k 144hz displays for my new mac studio.
I bought the viewfinity and have absolutely no regrets. I paid a little over $1,000. The price was $500 cheaper than the Apple studio display. It’s got plenty of ports. The colors compare relatively well to my MacBook Pro m3. Although I do prefer darker blacks. With the hardware limitations, the matted finish further reduces the blacks . I don’t mind the matte. The gloss on the Apple monitor is unbearable because it reflects every light source, often getting in the way of viewing what’s behind the light reflection. If there was one thing I would’ve changed on the viewfinity it would be the cheap plastic screen. When I put the resolution at 5k the Samsung is unusable for work. The text is too small to be legible. It’s got pros and cons but I can live with it until Apple creates a monitor with more ports.
There is a company called Innocn that makes 3 Mini LED 4K monitors, 27 inch 60 hertz $499 27' 165 hz, $749 and 32 inch 144 hz $899 all with 100% P3 and HDR 1000. These are the monitors you want if you need a bigger monitor to compliment the Macbook Pro or iPad Pro Mini LED display. I first bought the 60 hertz monitor and later picked up the 32 inch just because high refresh rate monitor are great for Pro Audio with moving meters and graphs. I even turned the 32 inch into a touch display with one of those infrared USB snap on kits for $80 to use as a live audio controller when working outside in the bright sun using the Vivid app and pushing the panel to 1000 nits all the time. Just remember to turn on local dimming in the menu when you get the monitor. Mini-LED is just the perfect style monitor for me, I tried a couple OLED monitors and they were too dark and dim. Even at 500 nits OLED doesn't get the same pop as mini LED when watching HDR content. But I would like to see a 5K Mini-LED monitor if even at 60 hertz just to compete with the Pro Display XDR.
"solved decades ago" is very bold calm, scaling in Windows got usable in last ~5 years. And usable is still far from perfect -- with monitors with different scaling I still get to see blurry windows on daily basis.
tf are you talking about. High DPI scaling has been horrible on Windows for ages and sometimes still is. Most Linux OS outright do not support it or only very limited like in Ubuntu which then breaks the moment you connect an external display to a laptop where both screens would require different scaling modes.
Finally, someone that accurately explained macOS and it’s weird scaling. I hate that it is the way that it is, but it’s exactly why the Studio Display / Pro Display XDR are leaps and bounds better than other displays for me when using a Mac.
as someone who spends hours reading text at a time and scrolling quickly (code + documentation), i havent found anything that matches my lg 5k and ASD. being able to adjust brightness and night shift mode + universal control across intel/m1/ipad has been *chef kiss*
I actually have this (I live in South Korea) and this is no replacement for the Studio Display. The coating is no match for the Nano-Texture, and the Smasnug version looks to be much.... washed out and fuzzier. Not to mention the squishy and soft USB ports, just calling for problems in the future. Also, only the stand is aluminium and the monitor itself is made of creaky, oily plastic masquaerading as metal. Horrid.I will return this within the week and just use my ASD, and I strongly recommend anyone who has the ability to buy the ASD over the S9 to do so. There will be no real regrets. Edit: And don't even mention the bloatware SmartTV features. Why????? Just remove those features and reduce the price, Smasnug... P.S. It costs around 1400USD in Korea.
If connected yes. I wouldn't know what IPs these would use to phone home. But, if you do, you can see to blacklisting those at your router. More than likely there are forums where others have done the same.

I'm DevOps/developer/Linux Server Admin and I work with text *A LOT*, like... all the time. Text in terminal, text in editors, code, automation, etc. I was using Linux for last 16 years or so (I'm 31 LOL) and I do really love Linux and it's tools for my work. But half year ago I switched to MacBook Pro M2 Max because I was tired of shitty scaling in Linux (which is also shitty on Windows). And trust me - scaling that macOS has with "fuziness" because of scaling down 5K image to 4K is the perfect one for this. REALLY. On Linux and Windows you actually get text rendered at 125% or 150% and it's shit. Tables rendered with 31px, 32px, 31px and 32px spaces all over the place because... rounding of numbers when calculating where line should land on screen, text rendering, etc. - everything about that is really worst in Windows and Linux and while macOS scaling-down may be performance hit - I don't feel that - and I really want 5K 27" display which would be ideal to have the sharpest letters. Looks like monitor for me, so I'll be waiting and watching!
I'm an old guy, and I finally became an Apple fan boy when I saw a 27" 5K iMac. Now I have three Intel iMacs (all bought used or refurbished), and whenever I have to stop using each one as a computer, I'll buy the $125 Luna cable/adapter and a Mac Mini, and continue to use those amazing displays.
I really wish MacOS would use monitors better. We need fractional scaling. I often use my MacBook with a 35 inch ultrawide monitor. It looks great to me, but when I share my screen over Teams, my colleagues can't read much on their side. This is true in Windows and Linux as well but there I just quickly set scaling to 150% and life goes on. On MacOS, the only way to do it is to drop resolution from 3440x1440 to something lower - which is not a viable solution.

I don't understand why you clearly mention that the screen's distance to the user being a massive factor in determining how good it looks, but promptly decide to use pixel density instead of resolution because... ? Pixel density doesn't account for distance either ! What you're looking for is visual angle, measured in arc seconds per pixel. It measures the area in your field of vision from the point of view of the person sitting in front of it. Also text fonts are vector graphics ! They can be scaled up or down ad nauseam and still remain pixel perfect ! The only reason text gets fuzzy at the wrong resolution on MacOS is... MacOS ! Apple just needs to implement proper scaling based on resolution like pretty much all their competitors and text would look perfect at any resolution without requiring downscaling overhead ! They simply decided not to so their customers have to pay extra for the Apple branded monitor, or force competing screen manufacturers to make one from scratch at that resolution increasing their cost. Finally, Maria has the right idea for image quality. For digital work, practically no end user will have a >4K resolution screen. Everyone has either 4K or 1080p, and sometimes the odd 1440p, but 5K is exceedingly rare and not worth designing for. Even higher resolution would only be useful for print work, but even then, you can just... zoom in. Resolutions higher than 4K are currently just a nice quality of life feature, not worth doubling your screen's cost over.
To be fair, I'm not a graphic designer of any sort. I do video editing at a VERY amateur level. I do audio editing -- and I play games / watch various content. I'm perfectly happy with my 27" 1440p Asus displays on my Mini. They're sharp, look good and do the job.... And I didn't pay anywhere near a grand for them. To my admittedly untrained eyes, they look good. Skin tones look right to me and so on. I went with 1440p / 144Hz displays as a balance between smoothness, price, and size. If I were a graphic designer or I produced videos professionally, I can see the value in spending the extra money -- but for your average layperson, I'm perfectly happy with my choices :) Hell -- my old (like 7 years old) Asus 24" 1080p monitor still works perfectly, and I still use it as well.
I currently own a 2020 iMac 5K and if I have to go with a Mac Studio + Display, nothing here has convinced me that anything would be better than the Studio Display at its 5K resolution. 5K gives you a baseline 1440p resolution with graphics and text rendered at double the resolution providing a very sharp UI. Everything I've seen here is a compromise based on price - like it was a _sin_ to want a really sharp UI - and the monitors which can give you that sharpness are no cheaper and may compromise on things like color accuracy or sound. A Studio Display gives you what Mac users have been asking for for a long time - a separate monitor with the iMac 5K's resolution and brightness (actually a tad brighter) that is separate from the computer so you can use it with any Mac. It's got a nice thumpy bass speaker and decent mics (though it still lacks FaceID). I've been using 5K iMacs since I discovered them in 2014 after I'd stopped buying Macs when Apple discontinued the 17" laptops which had been my previous mainstay. I stopping buying laptops until Apple came out in 2019 with the 16", and I now own a 2020 5K iMac and a 2021 16" M1 Max laptop for use away from my desktop (which also has a gorgeous display). I figure the iMac with its core-i9, 128 GB, AMD Radeon 5700XT w/16 GB, 10 gb ethernet will probably last until there's an M3 Max Mac Studio - don't think I'll need an Ultra - and expect the M3 at 3nm will offer enough of a performance boost to tempt me away from the iMac so displays are a moot point for me until that time.
Given the current Apple external display lineup, I would consider the Samsung display if it offered 120Hz refresh rate. Full array local dimming would be nice too, but I can overlook that. I just want my external display to match the display of my MacBook Pro... Is that really too much to ask?
It's on pre-order for 1599 euros here in North western europe. Same price as studio display. Hardly a competitor. Don't see why anyone using Macs would use the Samsung over Apple at same price.
just got the apple studio display a week ago which is what i am using at the office and yep.. wouldn't go for other brands when the first reason i bought the studio display is due to i have already been impress with the studio display.. for adjustment you can basically get the vesa option and buy a 20-30 bucks vesa mount

I run 2 4K LG displays (model: 27BL85U-W) with my Mac Studio and I'm fine with it. My current settings are set to use a scaled resolution with them and I thought this was fine, but now that I think of it, it might be why I seem to have more RAM issues than other Mac users I know. Assuming the RAM use is increased due to the scaled resolution setting. For example, I run these 2 4K displays and I am currently going on 5 days of no shutdown or even sleep mode with my setup. My memory usage is currently at 45% with a few Safari windows open, a few Firefox windows open, Discord, and a small game. Occasionally Safari seems to have an issue when I try to type. Beach ball cursor issue. One of my brothers owns one of the newer iMacs, unsure the specs, but he does have a 2nd display connected to it. I'm unsure his display settings, but he says he only ever restarts for an OS update and rarely puts it to sleep. He tells me he never has the issues I seem to have. I have had the issues I've described above when I used to own an Intel iMac, an Intel Mac Mini, and even the M1 Mac Mini. Have I been using my Macs wrong all these years?
I wish the studio display was cheaper but a glossy screen is a must for me. Maybe Apple will make a cheaper version in the future. When I was looking for a new computer I decided against a Mac mini because I couldn’t find a display that met the Apple criteria for a price I was happy with. Ended up with a MacBook instead. Essentially, the intended resolution is important for me. I can see the difference.

you probably havent tried a good quality matte screen, as it is cheaper to have them matte. There is no difference between the two in terms of vibrance/color reproduction. You do get different reflections artefacts from the surrounding environment tho.@@Fenrir11119
As another graphic designer, if you are using a 4K monitor on macOS you need to use the standard 2x scaling otherwise text and UI elements look poor, but it leaves you with a very large UI with not a lot of usable space. Alternatively, you need to use true 1:1 mode but then the UI elements may be too small. The LG 5K, Studio Display, and this new Samsung one are the best options for the best macOS experience on a 27" display.
Guys! Do you know that there are more developers using macOS (professionals working with code aka small text) than video and music production professionals combined? Yet, you deliberately ignored us. We need 5K more than anyone else.
This perfectly demonstrates everyone can make less premium, less color accurate, less sharp, worse sound quality display compared to apple's, while pricing exactly the same.
So everything was rendered in 5k, then downscaled to 4k? I wonder if the downscaling is where the lack of clarity comes from, not the slightly lower resolution.
Using a 4k monitor on macOS gave me a headache because of the display scaling issues. Sprung for a Kuycon G27X 5k monitor. Half the price of the studio display and uses the same panel. Pretty happy now.
I reviewed last years variant of this on my Channel, the Samsung S8. I was quite impressed for content creators. Seems like they made a few tweaks this year making the s9 even better. That being said, don’t discredit the much cheaper (since it’s older) s8.
The sad thing is that my biggest issue with the apple studio display and the LG 5k display before it wasn’t even the price (tho I cringe at that too), it was that apple can’t be bothered to put a damn display port or hdmi port on it, which makes it useless with the eGPU on my iMac. At least the Samsung has the display port, but at the moment it’s a $300 plastic monitor that they want the same price as apple’s studio display for because they put “smart” apps in the thing that literally NOBODY wanted (no one is going to buy this and not plug it in to a computer that can stream content way better than the monitor apps can). If Samsung has just made this overpriced instead of obscenely overpriced I’d maybe look past that (I mean at least, unlike apple, they include a display port and vesa mount screw anchors), but really hard to drop $1600 on a plastic monitor when the 4k plastic 28” equivalent is $250. Sigh. I’d pay a premium for 5k, if anyone made one that had a normal standard video port or that wasn’t a cheap plastic thing for 5x the price of cheap plastic monitors.
I'll share my personal experience with a non-Apple monitor on a Mac device. I have the MBA M2 paired through a USB-C with DP to a Gigabyte G27Q 1440p144HZ. At first, it looked a lot worse than my Windows PC at 1440p. 720p was good but too big. I solved this using Better Display, which by magic (?), created a 1440p HiDPI resolution that looked a lot better. Another thing is the colors. By default, depending on the display and macOS version, the display would use the YPbPr color space instead of RGB, so colors may look weird. There are various methods to get to output RGB. Still doesn't look as sharp as the integrated display but is a lot better than out of the box. Might wanna try with your current display instead of looking for a new one first.
If your monitor is 27in, 1440p is actually a great resolution for macOS because it is exactly half (or technically 1/4) of a 5k display. Since the studio display renders 2x at 5k 27in, 1440p at 27in renders at a perfect 1x. So while its not retina, the sizing of everything should match exactly what a macOS display at 5k would look like, just half as dense
You guys should do a video about running Apple accessories through a non-Apple eco-system. Airpods and Android, Studio Display and Windows, etc. See how much Apple you can do without using any of their operating systems.
I have a 2019 16" MacBook Pro, and I use it with a pair of Dell 4K 32" monitors at default scaling, and so far I'm pretty satisfied. Things may be a bit fuzzier, but I really have to stop and look for it. I haven't seen a performance hit, and my fans kick in less than when I was using a 1440p and two 1080p monitors.
I really do wish more companies would start caring about pixel sharpness instead of useless features like RGB. I've been shopping around for a new 4K monitor to game/work and I don't think I've ever seen one with >200 PPI. It's not a deal breaker for me though as long as text are sharp.
What makes this monitor so exciting is that it supports DisplayPort. That means it is a legitimate alternative to the studio display for people who want to use a windows laptop. If you are using something like an XPS 15 or any of its direct competitors, this could be a great productivity display. Windows works well at native 1440P and 27” (just ask any gamer). Since 5K is exactly double the pixel count in both dimensions, 200% scaling will appear to be the same size but the image will be sharper.
One thing to consider: on a deskatop if you have 4k screen that has low dpi because it is a big screen and you have the space, you can just position the screen father away from you and you will have the same effect as with a hight dpi screen. This is something you can't do on a laptop for obvious reasons.

I feel like mentioning the (lqck of) speakers of the pro display xdr kind of ignores it's point. If you actually need a pro display xdr, you also either don't need audio or need an audio setup that can't be realistically provided by a monitor

Apple did mess around with non-integer scaling on older OSes (Around the 10.3-10.4 days). I think they moved away from doing so because that would mean a lot of work for developers.

standard 4K displays are 27", not 28.
The LG Ultrafine 27" 5k is already basically 1:1 with a Mac studio panel, and it's currently on the market. Shocked you don't have one to compare, we have 3 deployed in a professional photo studio and they are getting great feedback.
It's literally developed with Apple. But it is considered to be an ugly display by most apple fans.

Samsungs monitor comes with a far more complete package and already has things that apple charges extra for. Such as a height adjustable stand or a matte screen or even the fact that the studio display is known for bricking itself. And above that you get a far superior camera too
Mac users' way of thinking are a lot different than the usual Apple/iOS users'. If the other product fit the bill perfectly for them, they'll definitely go non-Apple

There are apps that try to fix the situation of macOS looking worse than it needs to on non-hiDPI monitors - trying those programs would be an interesting follow up to this video. SwitchResX is one.

I recently got my first ever Mac (M1Pro MacBook Pro), and text sharpness on my 24" 1440p monitors was driving me crazy! Last week I discovered an app called Better Display which has helped a lot.
Apple really needs to figure this kind of stuff out.

Ngl, you got a real laugh out of me when saying that Apple had the was the correct ppi. Then I got to thinking and yeah, we should prioritize ppi, that’s a smarter way of measuring resolution because as you later stated, for 4k the pixel amount stays the same and the screen size can change and will give varying sharpness. That’s why I like MAC address!
Appreciate the detailed review, and your point on matching the 218ppi pixel density with macOS. However, let me share my personal standpoint. That level of pixel density leads to much smaller on-screen elements on 27-inch monitors, which in my case, causes eye strain and reading discomfort. Given this, I found my sweet spot with dual 4K monitors running at 200% scaling. This setup not only ensures comfortable viewing and reading, and is still quite sharp, but also provides extensive screen space, much more than a single 5k monitor, while costing less than a single 5K Apple display setup.
4K at 200% scaling is just wasting an enormous amount of content you can fit. Given they are 27", 150% or at least 175% still give reasonably large UI elements while fitting a ton more content compared to 1440p at 100% scaling.
Exactly my thoughts. 218 ppi is too dense. We should be making larger panels and simply placing them slightly further away. There is enough room on most desks.
And while we're at it: Computer monitors should not be a 16:9 aspect-ratio. Wide-screen is ideal for televisions. But 4:3 is better for almost all tasks on a computer. And also works as 3:4 when rotated. And enables more ergonomic multi-monitor setups.

The 150% or 175% scaling is a non-integer value, results in macOS having to make approximations when rendering. This can lead to a slightly less crisp image as compared to pure 200% scaling. At 200% scaling, macOS renders the screen at twice the resolution in both dimensions, so each pixel in the lower-resolution 'image' cleanly matches up with a 2x2 block of pixels on the higher-resolution screen. This results in clean lines and text that's free from blur or distortion.

Some of what you mentioned about scaling isn't entirely true. Nowadays scaling is performed on the display although it can be performed on the gpu. It's more about choosing resolutions that scale niceley with Apple's resolutions to avoid uneven scaling artifacts. This is less prevalent on Windows machines as they are more flexible about different displays and scaling and have cleartype.
Not on MacOS, you will have performance degradation with the current OS implementation, including Sonoma that's in Beta. For most tasks it may be fine, but for a more demanding professional usage it's easy to notice.
Unless you want to use an OLED or QD-OLED on Windows, in which case it renders font somewhat poorly since the sub-pixel layout is different on those display types.

most people i know struggle with a 32" 4k display with 100% scaling. one of the most common issues I have seen while supporting large companies when upgrading monitors, is people complaining about text being too small , and of course the scaling in windows is rubbish... so higher PPI without proper scaling is lost on most.

This is mostly an education issue (and windows should default to maybe 150% scaling at that size+rez). I am aware some software won't scale correctly (but it SHOULD be larger, if soft), but majority of apps that most people use does scale.
I'm a pro software dev and I use 24" 4K with 200% scaling. 1440p @ 24" is just not sharp enough.

You should mention refresh rates too, after working on a 120hz monitor for years I couldn't go back to 60hz so I went with 4k 144hz displays for my new mac studio.

I bought the viewfinity and have absolutely no regrets. I paid a little over $1,000. The price was $500 cheaper than the Apple studio display. It’s got plenty of ports. The colors compare relatively well to my MacBook Pro m3. Although I do prefer darker blacks. With the hardware limitations, the matted finish further reduces the blacks . I don’t mind the matte. The gloss on the Apple monitor is unbearable because it reflects every light source, often getting in the way of viewing what’s behind the light reflection. If there was one thing I would’ve changed on the viewfinity it would be the cheap plastic screen. When I put the resolution at 5k the Samsung is unusable for work. The text is too small to be legible. It’s got pros and cons but I can live with it until Apple creates a monitor with more ports.

There is a company called Innocn that makes 3 Mini LED 4K monitors, 27 inch 60 hertz $499 27' 165 hz, $749 and 32 inch 144 hz $899 all with 100% P3 and HDR 1000. These are the monitors you want if you need a bigger monitor to compliment the Macbook Pro or iPad Pro Mini LED display. I first bought the 60 hertz monitor and later picked up the 32 inch just because high refresh rate monitor are great for Pro Audio with moving meters and graphs. I even turned the 32 inch into a touch display with one of those infrared USB snap on kits for $80 to use as a live audio controller when working outside in the bright sun using the Vivid app and pushing the panel to 1000 nits all the time. Just remember to turn on local dimming in the menu when you get the monitor. Mini-LED is just the perfect style monitor for me, I tried a couple OLED monitors and they were too dark and dim. Even at 500 nits OLED doesn't get the same pop as mini LED when watching HDR content. But I would like to see a 5K Mini-LED monitor if even at 60 hertz just to compete with the Pro Display XDR.
I love how this is exclusively a software problem that every other os has solved literally decades ago.

And usable is still far from perfect -- with monitors with different scaling I still get to see blurry windows on daily basis.

tf are you talking about. High DPI scaling has been horrible on Windows for ages and sometimes still is. Most Linux OS outright do not support it or only very limited like in Ubuntu which then breaks the moment you connect an external display to a laptop where both screens would require different scaling modes.

Finally, someone that accurately explained macOS and it’s weird scaling. I hate that it is the way that it is, but it’s exactly why the Studio Display / Pro Display XDR are leaps and bounds better than other displays for me when using a Mac.

as someone who spends hours reading text at a time and scrolling quickly (code + documentation), i havent found anything that matches my lg 5k and ASD. being able to adjust brightness and night shift mode + universal control across intel/m1/ipad has been *chef kiss*

When making these videos, could you also mention color accuracy for each of the displays. It's super useful for designers and photographers.
I actually have this (I live in South Korea) and this is no replacement for the Studio Display. The coating is no match for the Nano-Texture, and the Smasnug version looks to be much.... washed out and fuzzier. Not to mention the squishy and soft USB ports, just calling for problems in the future. Also, only the stand is aluminium and the monitor itself is made of creaky, oily plastic masquaerading as metal. Horrid.I will return this within the week and just use my ASD, and I strongly recommend anyone who has the ability to buy the ASD over the S9 to do so. There will be no real regrets.
Edit: And don't even mention the bloatware SmartTV features. Why????? Just remove those features and reduce the price, Smasnug...

If connected yes. I wouldn't know what IPs these would use to phone home. But, if you do, you can see to blacklisting those at your router. More than likely there are forums where others have done the same.

I'm DevOps/developer/Linux Server Admin and I work with text *A LOT*, like... all the time. Text in terminal, text in editors, code, automation, etc. I was using Linux for last 16 years or so (I'm 31 LOL) and I do really love Linux and it's tools for my work. But half year ago I switched to MacBook Pro M2 Max because I was tired of shitty scaling in Linux (which is also shitty on Windows).
And trust me - scaling that macOS has with "fuziness" because of scaling down 5K image to 4K is the perfect one for this. REALLY. On Linux and Windows you actually get text rendered at 125% or 150% and it's shit. Tables rendered with 31px, 32px, 31px and 32px spaces all over the place because... rounding of numbers when calculating where line should land on screen, text rendering, etc. - everything about that is really worst in Windows and Linux and while macOS scaling-down may be performance hit - I don't feel that - and I really want 5K 27" display which would be ideal to have the sharpest letters.
Looks like monitor for me, so I'll be waiting and watching!
I'm an old guy, and I finally became an Apple fan boy when I saw a 27" 5K iMac.
Now I have three Intel iMacs (all bought used or refurbished), and whenever I have to stop using each one as a computer, I'll buy the $125 Luna cable/adapter and a Mac Mini, and continue to use those amazing displays.

I really wish MacOS would use monitors better. We need fractional scaling. I often use my MacBook with a 35 inch ultrawide monitor. It looks great to me, but when I share my screen over Teams, my colleagues can't read much on their side. This is true in Windows and Linux as well but there I just quickly set scaling to 150% and life goes on. On MacOS, the only way to do it is to drop resolution from 3440x1440 to something lower - which is not a viable solution.

What you're looking for is visual angle, measured in arc seconds per pixel.
It measures the area in your field of vision from the point of view of the person sitting in front of it.
Also text fonts are vector graphics !
They can be scaled up or down ad nauseam and still remain pixel perfect !
The only reason text gets fuzzy at the wrong resolution on MacOS is... MacOS !
Apple just needs to implement proper scaling based on resolution like pretty much all their competitors and text would look perfect at any resolution without requiring downscaling overhead ! They simply decided not to so their customers have to pay extra for the Apple branded monitor, or force competing screen manufacturers to make one from scratch at that resolution increasing their cost.
Finally, Maria has the right idea for image quality.
For digital work, practically no end user will have a >4K resolution screen. Everyone has either 4K or 1080p, and sometimes the odd 1440p, but 5K is exceedingly rare and not worth designing for. Even higher resolution would only be useful for print work, but even then, you can just... zoom in. Resolutions higher than 4K are currently just a nice quality of life feature, not worth doubling your screen's cost over.
To be fair, I'm not a graphic designer of any sort. I do video editing at a VERY amateur level. I do audio editing -- and I play games / watch various content. I'm perfectly happy with my 27" 1440p Asus displays on my Mini. They're sharp, look good and do the job.... And I didn't pay anywhere near a grand for them.
To my admittedly untrained eyes, they look good. Skin tones look right to me and so on. I went with 1440p / 144Hz displays as a balance between smoothness, price, and size. If I were a graphic designer or I produced videos professionally, I can see the value in spending the extra money -- but for your average layperson, I'm perfectly happy with my choices :)
Hell -- my old (like 7 years old) Asus 24" 1080p monitor still works perfectly, and I still use it as well.
I currently own a 2020 iMac 5K and if I have to go with a Mac Studio + Display, nothing here has convinced me that anything would be better than the Studio Display at its 5K resolution.
5K gives you a baseline 1440p resolution with graphics and text rendered at double the resolution providing a very sharp UI.
Everything I've seen here is a compromise based on price - like it was a _sin_ to want a really sharp UI - and the monitors which can give you that sharpness are no cheaper and may compromise on things like color accuracy or sound.
A Studio Display gives you what Mac users have been asking for for a long time - a separate monitor with the iMac 5K's resolution and brightness (actually a tad brighter) that is separate from the computer so you can use it with any Mac. It's got a nice thumpy bass speaker and decent mics (though it still lacks FaceID).
I've been using 5K iMacs since I discovered them in 2014 after I'd stopped buying Macs when Apple discontinued the 17" laptops which had been my previous mainstay. I stopping buying laptops until Apple came out in 2019 with the 16", and I now own a 2020 5K iMac and a 2021 16" M1 Max laptop for use away from my desktop (which also has a gorgeous display).
I figure the iMac with its core-i9, 128 GB, AMD Radeon 5700XT w/16 GB, 10 gb ethernet will probably last until there's an M3 Max Mac Studio - don't think I'll need an Ultra - and expect the M3 at 3nm will offer enough of a performance boost to tempt me away from the iMac so displays are a moot point for me until that time.
Given the current Apple external display lineup, I would consider the Samsung display if it offered 120Hz refresh rate. Full array local dimming would be nice too, but I can overlook that. I just want my external display to match the display of my MacBook Pro... Is that really too much to ask?

It's on pre-order for 1599 euros here in North western europe. Same price as studio display. Hardly a competitor. Don't see why anyone using Macs would use the Samsung over Apple at same price.
just got the apple studio display a week ago which is what i am using at the office and yep.. wouldn't go for other brands when the first reason i bought the studio display is due to i have already been impress with the studio display.. for adjustment you can basically get the vesa option and buy a 20-30 bucks vesa mount

I run 2 4K LG displays (model: 27BL85U-W) with my Mac Studio and I'm fine with it. My current settings are set to use a scaled resolution with them and I thought this was fine, but now that I think of it, it might be why I seem to have more RAM issues than other Mac users I know. Assuming the RAM use is increased due to the scaled resolution setting. For example, I run these 2 4K displays and I am currently going on 5 days of no shutdown or even sleep mode with my setup. My memory usage is currently at 45% with a few Safari windows open, a few Firefox windows open, Discord, and a small game. Occasionally Safari seems to have an issue when I try to type. Beach ball cursor issue. One of my brothers owns one of the newer iMacs, unsure the specs, but he does have a 2nd display connected to it. I'm unsure his display settings, but he says he only ever restarts for an OS update and rarely puts it to sleep. He tells me he never has the issues I seem to have. I have had the issues I've described above when I used to own an Intel iMac, an Intel Mac Mini, and even the M1 Mac Mini. Have I been using my Macs wrong all these years?

When I was looking for a new computer I decided against a Mac mini because I couldn’t find a display that met the Apple criteria for a price I was happy with. Ended up with a MacBook instead. Essentially, the intended resolution is important for me. I can see the difference.

you probably havent tried a good quality matte screen, as it is cheaper to have them matte. There is no difference between the two in terms of vibrance/color reproduction. You do get different reflections artefacts from the surrounding environment tho.@@Fenrir11119

As another graphic designer, if you are using a 4K monitor on macOS you need to use the standard 2x scaling otherwise text and UI elements look poor, but it leaves you with a very large UI with not a lot of usable space. Alternatively, you need to use true 1:1 mode but then the UI elements may be too small. The LG 5K, Studio Display, and this new Samsung one are the best options for the best macOS experience on a 27" display.

Using a 4k monitor on macOS gave me a headache because of the display scaling issues. Sprung for a Kuycon G27X 5k monitor. Half the price of the studio display and uses the same panel. Pretty happy now.

Channel, the Samsung S8. I was quite impressed for content creators.
Seems like they made a few tweaks this year making the s9 even better.
That being said, don’t discredit the much cheaper (since it’s older) s8.

The sad thing is that my biggest issue with the apple studio display and the LG 5k display before it wasn’t even the price (tho I cringe at that too), it was that apple can’t be bothered to put a damn display port or hdmi port on it, which makes it useless with the eGPU on my iMac. At least the Samsung has the display port, but at the moment it’s a $300 plastic monitor that they want the same price as apple’s studio display for because they put “smart” apps in the thing that literally NOBODY wanted (no one is going to buy this and not plug it in to a computer that can stream content way better than the monitor apps can).
If Samsung has just made this overpriced instead of obscenely overpriced I’d maybe look past that (I mean at least, unlike apple, they include a display port and vesa mount screw anchors), but really hard to drop $1600 on a plastic monitor when the 4k plastic 28” equivalent is $250.
Sigh. I’d pay a premium for 5k, if anyone made one that had a normal standard video port or that wasn’t a cheap plastic thing for 5x the price of cheap plastic monitors.

Gee golly, Samsung competing with Apple? Never seen that before.
I'll share my personal experience with a non-Apple monitor on a Mac device.
I have the MBA M2 paired through a USB-C with DP to a Gigabyte G27Q 1440p144HZ.
At first, it looked a lot worse than my Windows PC at 1440p. 720p was good but too big.
I solved this using Better Display, which by magic (?), created a 1440p HiDPI resolution that looked a lot better.
Another thing is the colors. By default, depending on the display and macOS version, the display would use the YPbPr color space instead of RGB, so colors may look weird. There are various methods to get to output RGB.
Still doesn't look as sharp as the integrated display but is a lot better than out of the box. Might wanna try with your current display instead of looking for a new one first.
If your monitor is 27in, 1440p is actually a great resolution for macOS because it is exactly half (or technically 1/4) of a 5k display. Since the studio display renders 2x at 5k 27in, 1440p at 27in renders at a perfect 1x. So while its not retina, the sizing of everything should match exactly what a macOS display at 5k would look like, just half as dense

You guys should do a video about running Apple accessories through a non-Apple eco-system. Airpods and Android, Studio Display and Windows, etc. See how much Apple you can do without using any of their operating systems.

27" 5K iMac is the king of monitors! Get one: remove the Intel space heater; install the monitor hack; and connect to an Apple Silicon Mac.
I have a 2019 16" MacBook Pro, and I use it with a pair of Dell 4K 32" monitors at default scaling, and so far I'm pretty satisfied. Things may be a bit fuzzier, but I really have to stop and look for it. I haven't seen a performance hit, and my fans kick in less than when I was using a 1440p and two 1080p monitors.
I really do wish more companies would start caring about pixel sharpness instead of useless features like RGB. I've been shopping around for a new 4K monitor to game/work and I don't think I've ever seen one with >200 PPI. It's not a deal breaker for me though as long as text are sharp.
What makes this monitor so exciting is that it supports DisplayPort. That means it is a legitimate alternative to the studio display for people who want to use a windows laptop. If you are using something like an XPS 15 or any of its direct competitors, this could be a great productivity display. Windows works well at native 1440P and 27” (just ask any gamer). Since 5K is exactly double the pixel count in both dimensions, 200% scaling will appear to be the same size but the image will be sharper.
One thing to consider: on a deskatop if you have 4k screen that has low dpi because it is a big screen and you have the space, you can just position the screen father away from you and you will have the same effect as with a hight dpi screen. This is something you can't do on a laptop for obvious reasons.

And your point of most other monitors being "the same amount of content, just bigger" is something I'm totally fine with.
I feel like mentioning the (lqck of) speakers of the pro display xdr kind of ignores it's point. If you actually need a pro display xdr, you also either don't need audio or need an audio setup that can't be realistically provided by a monitor

The font rendering on the Samsung almost looks like subpixel rendering. Which is weird because apple switched to grayscale font rendering ages ago.
