  • **easily butt hurt cruiser riders please note, I actually like this bike, it's amazing! I just don't like the suspension;)**
    If it hasn't been coined already, then I'm coining the phrase 'SUPER CRUISER'.
    A 24 hour test ride became a weekend test ride thanks to Manchester Ducati

    Great review! Thanks for this, spot on. Bike suits me and my riding style. I respect that Ducati don't follow any conventional 'rule book' on cruisers (so much so, they didn't want to refer to it as a cruiser initially). I find the bike super comfy on knees, thrilling, very engaging (especially in corners) and makes riding fun again. It's my first Ducati and without this bike I would never have bought a Ducati, simply because I wanted a cruiser but didn't want to compromise on thrilling performance.

      Thanks. They all seem to miss the back breaking rear suspension, which is a big deal on such an expensive bike.

    Hiya, came across this while waiting for mine to come back from the shop (was reversed into). What I love about the XDS is almost what you dislike, I've come from riding super bikes to wanting something that doesn't make me want to break the law every time I open the throttle but still can put it down when I want it.
    This for me bridges a gap, it's comfortable (pot holes aside - they're awful), sexy as hell, is incredibly quick, can take on a few twisty roads but importantly keeps me in a cruiser mood the majority of time and I don't need to be going triple digits to be having fun. Great review none the less.

      I liked it a lot more than I disliked it, and if I was ever going to buy a cruiser type bike, then this would be the only one I'd want. It's a real one of a kind of machine that's for certain 👍

    By far the best review out there, that good I test rode and bought an 'S' from Nottingham Ducati, the best customer service I've ever received from a dealer. I've had the bike 3 months now and they still ask me how is the bike?

      I've found Ducati customer service to be top draw too. It's the same with BMW as well, and I've found that it's the big 4 Japanese retailers that have the worst

    A very good and honest review, but I have just bought the 2017 x DIAVEL , and it is the most fun u can ever have, I agree with the bumps and hard on the ass, but to ride. its the best bike I have ever owned, a smile a mile, and the sexiest bike on the planet. 2 bikes in one, ballistic or in the garage lol, or town , slow and pose pose pose pose, or What gear am I in, how fast am I going , and omg I still have 2 gears left, save up and enjoy,.

      vernon woodland The harsh rear suspension was the only real problem I had with this bike, and if I was ever to get a cruiser, I'd go for this one every single day of the week. It's a real "WOW" of a bike 👍

      I'm late to the party here, but the factory wide seat and the aftermarket Ohlins rear shock will save you, especially if you're a big boy (I'm 195cm, 110kgs). Granted, it's a lot of money to spend on an already very expensive bike, but well worth the investment IMO.

    Great review as always-very informative and just the right detail about all the right stuff:)
    Also, if you haven't test ridden a SD 1290R then I do recommend it. I actually test rode the Superduke that your buddy Duke of DC purchased. I can tell you I was very surprised at the way that bike rides and handles; it is unlike anything I have ever ridden since I was a kid. The feel is more like a dirt bike of sorts---it feels very short and definitely has a bit of the V twin vibration, but a very comfy seating position. It also will wheelie at the mere thought of touching the throttle it has so much torque. I only had a short ride on it and after a bit I started to warm to it, but would have a tuono 1100 any day of the week instead. I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts.

    I did not care for your review before. I can't remember why.
    Then I bought the bike and listen to you again...
    OMG... you hit the nail in the head in SEVERAL things... that no one else did.
    Well done from a somehow regretful owner.
    PS: The Monster 1200S 2017 is MUCH more complete and less buggy.

      Thanks very much and I'm sorry that you've found the few flaws this bike has the hard and expensive way. I just try to be honest and call them as I find them. I'm not a proffesional journalist just an old biker with decades of experience, and I like try help people spend their hard earned money wisely. Thanks for your kind feedback, and I wouldn't give up on the xDiavel just yet. In your position I would take it to a suspension specialist and have the rear shock absorber sprung to be more plush and slower on thd rebound, I'd then look into after market ECU flashes to improve the low speed fuelling. With those issues addressed you'll have a truely great and special bike 👍

      Joe this bike is simply the best cruiser out there, with jaw-dropping performance and is drop-dead gorgeous machine if you elect to simply sit and ogle at it. All you need to do is get your rear shocks softened and order a backwards handlebar and also the extra-cushioned seat and you got yourself the Cullinan of Cruisers man. I bought mine (an X-Diavel S) in 2017 and last month I got my puppy a quick-shifter and the Bike makes you feel like a Superhero. I live in Dubai and this puppy is such an attention-grabber and people gather around it and wanna click pictures and stuff, each and every time I park it somewhere. So don’t characterize yourself as a regretful owner just yet. All your Bike needs is some tweaking and it should transport you to biking haven soon thereafter. 😇

    Excellent review. Seems like a great in-between bike for someone used to riding racing bikes in an area with challenging roads now living in an area with flatter straighter roads that are always smooth - Florida vs the northeast. Also like the feel of a bike that sits taller than the cruisers but with a seat height lower than the racing bikes - especially when carrying so much weight.

      You must ride it on smooth roads, as it's way to harsh on the pot hole infested roads of the UK. On better roads than I rode it on, it'll be lovely

      Nailed it. That’s the market and that’s what makes the bike fun to ride. It’s not a track bike. It’s a monster cruiser that gives you a feel of a Harley experience with the rougher ride. It also has something like 100 configurations of modes inside the settings. 3 power modes, 3 ABS modes, and 8 traction modes.

    Awesome review.... Almost like an ownership review. The pros and cons are spot on with my findings after doing a 20 min urban and freeway test ride with poor road quality similar to that shown in the video. Suspension is a major negative. DPL is so much fun. The stock exhaust has a lovely chortling tune. Liked and subscribed. Please do a review of the thunderbird storm lt and rocket iii roadster please. 👏

    Probably the best review I've found so far. I think the weird fueling may be because of the termi on it I've heard it needs its fueling remapped when you slap that on it. Though then again, I've also heard that it's not happy under 2500 rpm in general. =P That being said I'm absolutely in love with the S version of the bike. The VMax and the XDiavel S are my dream bikes. Too bad it costs about €28k (or about 25 GBP) over here. And also I don't have my licence yet. Waiting for another couple months to turn 24 so I can bypass the restrictions and get my full licence from the get go.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  7 років тому

      Thanks. Yes this bike is made for the open road, it's an absolute beast in the right environment. I'd probably take the xDiavel over the Vmax, which is saying a lot as I've been in love with the Max since I first rode one... well before you were born to be honest, but the Vmax is a weighty beast whilst the Ducati is more of a thoroughbred

    A great review, much important information there. Could you please share your opinion on the sound from those termignonis? Im especially interested if this was more a nice, not too loud bass rumble, still acceptable after few hours of ride or was it just too loud and, lets call it, an ear exhausting experience? Again many thanks for your good work.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  7 років тому +1

      They were just far far to loud. There was a really high intensity high range crack to the sound that I could actually feel causing damage to my hearing. Without ear protection you would certainly suffer permanent damage to your ears from riding with these pipes. They are anti-socially loud, and I love a strident exhaust note myself, but these are just to much.

  • @TG2FB
    @TG2FB 7 років тому +5

    That's a very good review. I like your reasoning about its weak spots, too. I own a XDiavel S myself, and I agree with most of your points, in particular the suspension from hell, which simply has been a poor choice from Ducati, given the riding position really doesn't lend itself to this kind of harsh suspension. Other than you, I don't have much of an issue with what you call the fueling at low speeds. And I think the main reason for that is that you keep it in sports mode in urban areas. For prolonged riding in cities, it's really much more comfortable to choose the urban mode. Perhaps if you can get a mother shot at it, please try that. Switching modes is very easy and can be done while riding. One other thing which I think you haven't mentioned (or I don't remember), is that for a cruiser, this bike has an amazing lean angle of 40 degrees. Harley's most mobile bikes have a max lean angle of 25 degrees, and some less than 20. Forty on a cruiser, that's a whole new level of fun in this particular seating position, and a novelty on the market, as far as I know. By the way, Ducati explicitly discouraged owners to take a passenger without installing the sissy bar. The "passenger" seat in solo mode is just for the optics, and not for actually taking anyone with you - ever. Again, thanks for a review well done!

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  7 років тому +3

      Thanks. I'd love another shot at this bike, it was an absolute blast to ride and tons of fun. Maybe the fueling is one of those things you just get used to, just like I have on my R1. I should have mentioned something about the lean angle, because there certainly wasn't an issue with it during my time on the bike. Handling wise I'm just used to sports bikes, so any bike's handling will feel sluggish after an R1 and I'd probably get used to its characteristics given enough time.
      I found myself missing it once I'd taken it back, and if there was a relatively cheap aftermarket fix for the rear shock then I could possibly see myself owning one in a few years once I've got sports bikes out of my system, as without a doubt it's the coolest looking bike I've ever ridden.

      Hi frank I have a 2017 xdiavel and found the suspension unforgiving if you hit a bump at high speeds. I increased the rear pretension 3 turns and wound the rear damping back one turn from the factory setting. I don't know if the factory setting is the same for all countries? I'm in Australia and our roads are not great. The changes lessened to bone-jarring impact of larger bumps at speed whilst improving the around town ride albeit it is still firm. good luck.

    Ok, so i'm seriously looking for a cruiser type bike. My knee's are shot and my sports bike brake me on a long trip. I am looking for a bike that goes and handles like a super sports. but doesn't have my legs tucked under me. After 5 years have riding my 2012 ZX10R, it still makes me smile when i give it the beans. Will this Ducati do the same? great vid. By the way, why are u using the clutch on the up shift?

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  7 років тому

      In a straight line it'll keep up with pretty much any sports bike, and for a cruiser it's not to shabby in the corners as well. It's slow to turn in, but once it's established in the turn it holds nicely. For me though the rear suspension is far to hard, and a big lump in the road shoots straight up your spine.
      The xDiavel doesn't come with a quick shifter as standard unfortunately and one would be handy

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  7 років тому +1

      it's difficult for me to say, as I've only ridden 2 modern Ducatis and both had DVT. However I've heard many tales of low rev lumpiness in previous non DVT bikes, but the Multistrada especially was very smooth at low revs, but had a bit of a flat spot in the mid. The xDiavel was less good at lower revs, but not unbearable, but had a really smooth and insanely torquey mid range, so maybe it is worth it.
      I did try and soften the suspension out as much as you can without getting the serious tools out, but the spring is still really stiff when fully dialed out.

    if your still reading comments on this vid you've made a while ago now... how is the wind blast? ive watched a lot of reviews no one really mentions it..

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  4 роки тому

      Sorry for the delay.
      The wind blast isn't an issue at all. I find that on fully naked bikes the wind is spread evenly over your whole body so you don't really feel it as a problem, and personally I prefer it because it's the quintessential experience associated with riding a motorbike, and to many people try to hide from it for some reason.
      In a lot of cases adding a small screen makes it worse, as the wind is compressed and sped up so that it hits your head and chest harder.

  • @simonconlaund1010
    @simonconlaund1010 5 років тому

    Before you took this bike, did you have the suspension set-up for your weight?

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  4 роки тому

      I tried to dial it in after I picked it up, but I maxed out the rear shock to try and make it less spine shattering.
      It's now a few years later, and If I was to buy one now, I'd go for a well looked after used model, and fit a top flight after market unit in the rear and have it sprung to my personal taste.
      It would be a kick ass bike then.

  • @JRBORIQUA7

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  6 років тому

      JR BORIQUA7 Hi. Yes the suspension is fully adjustable, but in my opinion the amount of adjustment needed is outside the range availiable on the rear shock absorber, plus I'd want a much softer spring on there. This could be done easily enough but you'd need to spend money

      The riding position is very comfortable....right up to the moment when you go over a pothole and the shock goes straight up your spine. Maybe the rear shock can be adjusted or modified to be much softer, but as stock, the rear suspension is rock hard

    You have to classify and compare this bike not to a Harley bagger, but a Softail type of bike that’s a bare cruiser. This is that, with 3x better handling and loads of insane power that blows most other cruisers away (except a few like the VMAX). You can’t compare it with other Ducati naked bikes either because that’s not what it is. You can also dial the power down in urban or tour modes and you can further dial down the experience with the traction modes (of which this bike has 8). That flattens it out if you want it. I bought this bike after riding a sportster 48 for 6 years and was tired of the poor handling and lack of power. This bike does both of those much better and it looks bad A.

    • @VeeFour

      I'm not a professional journalist, just an average guy who calls it like I see it. I give other average guy's like myself the no nonsense unvarnished information they need to make an informed purchase, when they're not in a position to test a bike themselves before they make an expensive decision.
      My comparisons are kept generally broad, and not being a cruiser guy, in my mind there is little difference between a Bagger or a Softail.
      To me if your legs form an obtuse angle and your feet are well forward of the bike's centre of mass, then it's a cruiser 😉
      However if I was a cruiser guy, then this would be the absolute FIRST bike on my short list, as it looks utterly badass and goes like stink 😎

    You say you don’t like the fueling at low speed, but if your around town urban is ideal. So you can pick your poison. Have a nice smooth city driver or a break neck beast. You don’t like the lack of power in Urban but then say you think the bike should have less power. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the fueling. I have owned mine for over a year. No difference between touring and sport? The throttle response and power application are markedly different between the modes. Touring gives you a nice smooth roll on/roll off throttle response. Sport gives you the raw Ducati experience.The matte paint is gorgeous and easier to maintain than gloss. Maybe you got a dud.

    I love loud pipes but that note gave me a headache after 2 minutes. Nice review. I like the look and sexiness of the XDiavel but not a fan of cruiser style in general. IMO it would look better with a set of (in your face) analogue clocks rather than that miniature mobile phone style. BMW and a few other manufacturers should have the same reserviors as these, rather than those R2D2 flopping around nasty bits of plastic that distract you while riding such as on the S1000r.

      Wales2Wheeler yes those Termis were horrendously loud. I enjoy a nice sounding exhaust note as much as the next biker, but it was ear damagingly loud. The machined reservoirs were a really nice feature, but given how much Ducati charge for their machines they should have quality fittings like these. The only reason why this bike wasn't selling any better is A-it's to stiff for the sofa loving HD owners B-maintenance costs for everyone else. Around 1000 pounds for a big service when U change all the belts and pullies that needs to be done every 5 years or 10K~12K miles on top of new tires (this bike eats back that back like there is no tomorrow) it's just to expensive to run as a only bike. As a second third bike that dose lass then 5K miles a year then yes but for that one has to have deep pockets.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  4 роки тому +1

      I think that it's a personally held fear of belt driven pulleys that has stopped me from ever owning a Ducati if I'm honest. Even though Ducati tend to have some of the longest service intervals in the industry, which I'm sure demonstrates the robustness of this system, I still don't feel comfortable with belt driven cams, and I'm sure that I'm missing out on some great motorcycling because of my fears.
      The V4 however, with all of it's gear driven loveliness, that is a different prospect entirely

      @VeeFour  6 років тому +1

      FlyBaby I know how to ride a bike mate, and the dealer himself admitted that the fuelling isnt great around town. The Multistrada works just fine so this should too. If a bike has to be ridden at high revs in low gear to make it useable, then there has been a failiure in the design stages somewhere

    • @zraybroske2416
      @zraybroske2416 5 років тому

      Exactly. It takes about 3 minutes to see where an engine wants to run, and if you read the manual, it’s clear that leak torque is at 5,000rpm versus a Harley that’s around 3,500. So you have to ride the bike closer to there to moderate
      Power. But it does produce 80% of torque at 2,000 rpm which is crazy for this kind of high horsepower engine and high revving for a cruiser.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour  7 років тому +7

      Harley, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda. They all make cruisers, and they are all uniformly softly sprung, and there's a reason for it.
      When you ride a bike with a neutral seating position, i.e with your feet underneath you, your weight is on your perineum and your inner thighs, plus you can mitigate sudden shocks like potholes by absorbing them through your legs.
      However on a cruiser with your feet forward, your whole bodyweight is directly on your tail bone and your spine is pretty much vertical. This is a very comfortable position to ride in but there's a massive downside. Without softly damped suspension any hard hits travel directly up your spine, and with your legs forward you can't mitigate any of that shock and it goes straight up your spine.
      Take it from me, when you hit a pothole on this bike it feels like someone's hit you simultaneously square in the coccyx and on the top of the head with a mallet.

      Honda are making inroads with their duel clutch bikes, but most riders, especially riders who choose a bike like this which is essentially a big expensive toy, ride for the simple pleasure of it. In my opinion, operating a fully manual powerful bike is the greatest pleasure to be had on two wheels, and that pleasure would be diluted by an automatic gearbox.
      However on the other hand, we have electric bikes on the horizon, and by their nature they will be twist and go, yet I am excited to ride one because of the torque that electric motors promise 👍

      I don't know know where youre getting trash talk from, this was an objective and balanced review. I also don't see where you're getting so much negativity from, I conclude by saying that there's only 2 major negatives with the bike, both of them valid in that at normal town speeds the fueling is terrible, which it is, and that the suspension is to hard and unforgiving for the upright riding position as it sends shocks directly up your spine when you hit large bumps or potholes. For everything else I'm largely positive. I compliment it's looks, character, brakes, equipment, fuel economy, built quality, I even say "there are more pros than cons with the this bike, so how is this to negative? The Ducati dealer even agreed with me about the suspension and fueling, and as for it being out of my age range, being 45 years old I am EXACTLY the age that this bike is aimed at. You obviously didn't watch to the end (probably because it's a bit long really) and just made this comment based on your observations up to the point you gave up, but watch again and you'll see that I end the review on very positive terms.

      I also own a 2019 Ducati v4S and have plenty to go by regarding power that puts you backwards. The Diavel has power but it isn’t something that is so utterly black and white with power as described in this video. The bike is very enjoyable and easy to ride at very low rpm/speeds and at higher speeds. The throttle is fine; no one is going to hit a bump and whiskey throttle so bad you launch your passenger off the back. I’m 6’5 and the bike’s seating position is great. The xdiavel has slightly different foot positioning, seating, and handle bars but it isn’t like this video describes; it isn’t like riding a 500 cubic inch block Boss motorcycle. I’m sorry, the whole synopsis of the motorcycle was over the top. The Diavel is going to be a tighter suspension ride but it has to be to increase cornering. With that said, it is no street fighter.

      I'm not sure that I'd recommend one of these for a beginner, but that's just my opinion. If the rider was suitably mature in their approach to this bike and treated it with the absolute respect that it deserves, then it wouldn't be to much of a stretch for a beginner to get past the initial steep learning curve without killing themselves on it. It has some characteristics in it's favour for the new rider, the clutch is very smooth and easy to modulate, and it's surprisingly easy to maneuver around at low speeds. The one thing that might cause a new rider serious issues, and by serious I mean the crashy end up in hospital (or worse) kind, is just how little you have to roll the throttle on before the world ends and planet spinning amounts of torque are unleashed at the back wheel. However if you've set your heart on one of these and treat it with the same amount of respect that you would a rabid Bengal Tiger, you might be okay.

It's nice to see how it performs on real world roads. I'm slightly more mature ( age wise ) than yourself ;) so not really a boy racer type. Was disappointed to hear about the fuelling surge issue. Had never heard this before in about 300 reviews I've watched on this bike. Probably because as I said previously it was never ridden on the road types we have.
