========= No Bullets Fly LYRICS =========
From down below an enemy spotted
So hurry up, rearm and refuel
But through the bomber’s damaged airframe
See wounded men, scared to their bone
Look to the right and then look again
And see the enemy in the eye
No bullets fly, spared by his mercy
Escorted out, out of harms way
Fly, fighting fair, it’s the code of the air
Brothers, heroes, foes
Killing machine
Honour in the skies
B17
Flying home
Killing machine
Said goodbye to the cross he deserved
He risked his life two times that day
To save an unknown enemy
Escort to safety, out of the killzone
A short salute, then departed
========= Historic Fact ==========
Following a successful air raid on the German city of Bremen, Charlie Brown's American B-17 bomber, ‘Ye Old Pub’, suffered severe damage. When German fighter ace, Franz Stigler, was ordered to shoot it down, he risked his life to escort the bomber to safety instead of attacking.

The only problem is, he thought, would this act really be a chivalrous deed. He remembered the first lesson he had learned from his first commander, another Luftwaffe ace Gustav Rödel. "If I ever find out that you've shot down an enemy parachuting pilot," Rödel told him, "I will shoot you personally. Although we are at war, we cannot lose our humanity. @@stalinium4769 good question
I mean shooting someone that is defenseless in any kind of way is not human.
@@stalinium4769 it all depended on the man. Stigler was a zealous Catholic. The moment he flew beside the B-17, he had a rosary in his hand. Therefore, his deep Christian faith did not allow him to shoot down a "defenseless" machine. A lot also depended on where the fights took place.
I don't know why, but this actually made me cry.
The fact that the German fighter pilot showed such humanity in the midst of war reminds us that while governments may have evil designs, the people are still just people, and while it's one thing to shoot at someone who is trying to kill you, it's a different thing to attack someone who is defenseless.

At 3:38 they show Stigler pointing over his shoulder to the right, followed by Brown shaking his head "No!" That actually happened. I read the book "A Higher Call". Stigler didn't think the B-17 could make it back to England due to how heavily damaged it was and was pointing them to neutral Sweden where they would be safely interned. Brown thought Stigler wanted him to land at a German airfield, which was why he refused. BTW, Stigler flew close formation with the B-17 over the coast because he knew German AA gunners would recognize a 109 and not fire. He not only refused to fire himself, but also protected the B-17 from other German fire. If any man deserves an honored place in Valhalla, it is Franz Stigler.
war may mean death but it doesn't mean heartless.... most of the time anyway
@@hunterbear2421 True. During Operation Market Garden when British paratroopers were cut off and surrounded at Arnhem, they set up a field hospital in the basement of a hotel. During the battle, the upper floors were hit by shell fire and set ablaze. The British commander knew the wounded in the basement had to be evacuated before the building collapsed, but the incoming fire was to heavy. He sent word, under a flag of truce, to the German commander explaining the situation and requesting a temporary ceasefire so the wounded could be saved. Not only did the German commander agree, but many German soldiers laid down their weapons and crossed unarmed into the British perimeter to assist in the rescue operation. @@carsismyaddiction6919 it's also a sign of a good commander. The entire purpose of a military is to accomplish the political goals of the state through force/violence. Using excessive force (such as killing injured troops) actually makes your acts less effective. As it may make the enemy fight on even past the point of being combat effective.
In fact such acts of compassion can motivate an enemy who is no longer combat effective to give up and surrender. Thus saving you time, supplies and personnel. This is a lesson that goes as far back in history back as Cyrus II of Persia (500B.C.).

While in training Stigler was told by his commanding officer “If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you down myself. You follow the rules of war for you - not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” Stigler later commented “To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn’t shoot them down. “
Just a small correction to your post. I read the book "A Higher Call" which details this story. It was well after Franz Stigler was a fully trained and experienced pilot that he was assigned to North Africa. It was there that, when he first reported in, his squadron commander told him, "Shooting a man in a parachute is not an act of war, it is an act of murder. If I ever find you have done that, I will draw my pistol and shoot you myself." Just a small detail.

Women: "Men can´t even cry over Titanic"
Sabaton and Yarnhub: "Have you heard the Tale of Ye Old Pub and Franz Stigler?"
Its a story not many know, and with good reason...for if the story ever broke during wartime, Franz would probably have executed. But the story goes, that he spotted Ye Old Pub, wounded, on fire, bloodied. He could have fired. He could have downed the men. He could have been awarded for his...barbarism. But his own master, his old commander once told him, that to shoot such pilots would be tantamount to treason and would put a bullet between Mr. Steigler's eyes. So despite his repeated gestures to order the plane down, at great risk to all involved, he escorted Ye olde Pub home. Ye Old Pub's commander told them to censor the story to save the man's life. Years later, the pilot one Charlie Brown sought out the pilot and they met. It was a glorious meeting. And they remained friends until they flew on their final mission together into the annals of history. Perhaps the lesson here is that at the end of the day, honor trumps any award.

@@goldosprey his commander had actually said "if you shoot at a man in a parachute, i'll shoot you", or something to that effect. he didn't fire because he didn't see a difference between the Pub and a parachute, they were, for all intents and purposes, defenseless. the commander told them to censor it as much to save the pilots life as because it would sent the wrong message : the idea of an honorable enemy pilot would have potentially had a negative impact on allied forces : i forget where, but there was a quote that at its core, was about how oftentimes in war you dehumanize your opponents, because if they were human, what does that make you? if they had told the story of an enemy pilot showing humanity in war, it would have likely made some of their pilots more hesitant to pull the trigger on the enemy

Stigler’s CO during training instilled these values into him, teaching him to NEVER shoot down parachutes and that if he ever did, he would find Stigler and kill him himself. The book is excellent. I'm currently reading it for the second time. I can't get enough of this story. If it were fiction, people would say it's too farfetched but it's real.

Until No Bullets Fly Arrived.
There are actually several documentaries about Stigler and Brown. I remember seeing one on The History Channel, back before it became the Space Alien Bigfoot Templar Conspiracy Channel.
Nice reference. hahaha
Unsung no more
I highly recommend the book "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos! It recounts Franz's life growing up in Germany and Charlie's in America until they came across each other on that memorable day December 20, 1943!
no one could really speak about it until more recently. one because he would have been killed by the fanatics that took over his country. the other because he'd been ordered not to speak of it because it didn't fit the propaganda the higher ups were pushing at the time.
We need more people like Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler now more than ever.
What happened in the skies shows that even in a time of war there is good in us humans and humanity shines so bright.
@@Kanefan701 unfortunately it can be only in the air. The reason of the mercy of Franz Stigler was in the air code of the war. For the pilot destroying the enemy with the parachute it is a shame. And Franz Stigler when he saw this injured plane associated this plane with the pilots on the big parachute and didn't shoot them. Pilots always was more "kind" to the enemy when other forces. Even on the our front (I am Russian) usually Russian and German pilots didn't attack enemy on the parachute. But I say usually. Sometimes Germans could do it, and our pilots took a revenge for the comrades
We dont need more people like them, we ourselves need to be like them

"If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself."
You have to wonder though- Ye Olde Pub crew did a lot of missions after this. How many of his own countrymen did Stigler get killed by not dropping the plane?

It seems that Franz Stigler took a final nod towards an era that started and ended in World War 1 during the dawn of plane to plane combat. When pilots were more like knights of the skies, fighting with a code of honor and admiring eachother's skills. A kindness in war is the rarest thing of all. It should be nurtured wherever it can be found.
theres a powerful photo somewhere on the internet taken after the war of german soldiers being shown the reality of things and how wrong the propoganda they were brainwashed with was. so so many were horrified with what they were made to do after being shown the truth.
B-17s were beasts, the amount of damage those birds could take and still keep going were mind boggling
The only modern equivalent in terms of taking damage and not giving any fucks would probably be the A-10s. The USAF can keep their exorbitantly expensive F-35s. Those fancy jets can't take nearly as much damage as an A-10 and most certainly can't be easily repaired while in the field.
The repairs the mechanics did would give the FAA today an aneurism. ☠️
It was supposed to take 25 hours to remove and replace a single B-17 engine. Mechanics learned how to do it in 4 hours.
They merged 2 planes into one, tied things together with bailing wire and a prayer.
This is why there are almost no flying WW2 planes. Only replicas and a few that were sitting on the factory floor when the end is the war was announced.
I actually got to see a super rare Spitfire that was rescued as a derelict airframe in a Asian museum, that had seen and survived combat.
There is a damn good reason why the FAA and the FARRs are so strict.
They also keep getting stricter too!!!
@@equarg Some are for good reasons but most is there from lobbying. Not for good or bad reasons per say but why its there.
@@azurblueknights well, f-35s arent meant to take any damage at all which is far better. You can't shoot what you Cant see
@@jeremiahbuck2450 The point is that the air-force was wanting the F-35 to take over the A-10s duty of close air support. For an aircraft to adequately perform a CAS role to troops on the ground, it cannot be moving as fast as an F-35 is capable of. They'd never accurately hit enemy infantry and smaller vehicles on the ground moving at speed, which means the F-35's attack runs on ground targets would have to be slower, which would then cause the F-35 to be vulnerable to return fire.
The A-10, by comparison, is slower but more heavily armored. This allows them to perform CAS missions more reliably and linger in the airspace of friendly ground forces for far longer. The F-35 is a good multi-role fighter, but CAS is simply not a role it is suited to at this point in time.
