I did like the the medium high and the low pitch cowbell. I definitely have to recommend you to give a try to the peruvian cowbell brand FVPERUBELLS they artisan made i have the medium high and low afro pitch cowbell the best , hope you can do a review of them 👍
I’ve seen their bells but never heard them. Have to check them out at some point as well. Doesn’t the same person make estuches? Not sure if that is the same company. Thanks for the comment Eduardo! Un abrazo
I enjoyed every single cowbell that was played. I think it really comes down to personal preference of which cowbell to use on a song. Awesome video ‼️
Awesome Jesse! Definitely is all about personal preference, I tried to mix up the tones to give a decent overview. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the support!
I like JCR (Medium-Low) and Mostly like LP Low Tone- ES-9. I have Colombian bells medium and high pitch that I use often. I also have a Toca Bell Medium pitch. Now just bought the LP ES-15 which I did not like so much. So I'm going to sell it. I'm interested in a low-low pitch if its even possible. But I can do with low pitch ES-9. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and well play.
Thank you so much bro. I know which one I want to buy now! This video helped me more than 2 hours of UA-cam I'm going for the es-9 so I can play at salsa clubs here in London without making too much of a racket for dancers
I understand....Reyes Percussion is from Colombia, they have a Facebook page if you want to get one, I’m sure they can ship it to you. Here it is: facebook.com/reyespercusion, hope that helps!
The first, second and fourth bells were my favorites. I am fortunate enough to own three JCR bells. I have one low and one high-pitched bongo bell, and one chacha bell. I remember each time I purchased them, as the selection process for me was quite personal. Not being able to see, God has blessed me with a heightened sense of hearing, so I based my selection process on songs and bands that I like. However, the first bell to my collection really happened by accident. Some years ago, my uncle took me to a guitar center down here in Houston to watch me play the congas and other percussive instruments that I could not afford. I wanted him to play with me, so I told him to go find a cowbell, and it happened to be the first bongo bell that I would buy, as it sounds almost exactly like the one heard in Poncho Sanchez's Coco May May. The second one that I bought was my chacha bell, based on the one heard in the mid-fifties to early '60s recordings from the original Orquesta Aragon. The low-pitched bongo bell that I bought based on the second time that I got to see the new Orquesta Aragon at Seattle's jazz alley. If you don't mind, I would like to share an audio example via Dropbox link here, as I believe these bells, especially the ones from JCR are worth sharing with others as they are now collectors items.
I have a set of 10 different bongo bells. Reyes, CP (Colombian percussion) Pezkao, LP (Barrio Bell, ES-15, quite good) and three JCR bells which are my favorite ones. I like the JCR high pitch and the JCR low tone too. I think JCR bells are unbeatable. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia.
Saludos! I agree, JCR is a treasure for me. I bought it directly from Cali’s hands. I’ve heard CP bells as well. They are also very good. So many options now.
I appreciate you played them consistently. For my personal taste, I preferred the JCR and the LP from your group. Def check out PL Benchmark; I have one of his Mid pitch bells. Difference in types of beaters would be another interesting comparison vid. 👍🏻
You’re welcome! JCR is a classic forever, love that LP bell too. Pete makes great stuff, I have to get one from him. Great suggestion btw! 👍🏼 I’ll consider it for a future videos, have to buy more beaters!
Hey Ernesto, thanks for the comment. For sure, it’s about personal taste. Some people like certain pitches and some pick their bells depending on the key of the song to see which ones fits better.
I have a set of three J.C.R. bells that I bought from Haight Ashbury Music about twenty five years ago. So while all the bells sounded fine, the J.C.R. is the one that to me that sounds like a cowbell should sound. Thank you for preparing and uploading this. Your effort is appreciated for this and your other videos.
Glad you enjoyed the video Gary! The Reyes Percussion bell is my most recent bell that I got, it was gifted to me by Tito Gutierrez and Julio Loyola, both play with La Sonora Poncena. Very good tone and light weight! 👌🏼 and LP, one of my favorite and most used bells.
JCR is treasured for sure! Great sound. I really like the LP bell too, my only wish is that it projected more in a Live setting. Both awesome bells though!
@@RomanPercussion i see jcr bells selling for CRAZY money, i’ll have to settle with the LP lol. I have a percussion plus bell that i LOVE. it’s so clean sounding and is great for studio but not so much for live. Hang on to the JCR, great investment
Unfortunately, some people are taking advantage of JCR bells. I bought my bells directly from Cali when he was alive and the prices that people are selling…..it’s sad to see. I understand they are valuable for sure but in my opinion, it’s too much. Regardless, beautiful bells and and one of a kind. Glad you got a bell you like! There are so many options out there now!
It depends on the style of band and music your gonna play, the jcr,and Lp bells I think are good for conjunto, one must know how to use the right bell for the right situation.
Very True! I typically am a “stickler” for making sure the bongocero’s bell and the Mambo bell from the Timbalero sound well together. Hence I have several bell options to make sure 😂
Hey Will. Loved this video! I like the pattern you're playing on the cowbells. If I'm not mistaken, it's the normal typical pattern, but you're hitting the 1, 1-and, 2 in a particular rhythm that makes it sound really cool. Just wanted to ask a couple of questions: What's the name of the backing sound track? And also, do you have any idea where the Reyes Percussion cowbell can be purchased online? I can't seem to find it.
Hey Arvind, thank you and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I’ll have to check what track it was. I don’t remember off hand lol 😅, as far as the bell, Reyes Percussion can be found on Facebook, here is the link: facebook.com/reyespercusion
@@RomanPercussion Thanks Will. I managed to find the track: Suena Mi Tambor (Instrumental Version) by Cuba Quartet. As for Reyes Percusion, it looks like they don't have an online shop, so I might need to contact them using the Facebook page you linked me to, to find out how to purchase. Thanks again!
Ah ok! Yup that’s it!...yes I don’t believe they have a website or anything. Just a Facebook page that I’m aware of. No problem and Thanks for the support!
My JCR bell is prized possession and it’s very dear to me since I bought it right from Cali’s hands. He was such a nice guy and his shop was like being at Disney World. A percussionist’s dream!
@@RomanPercussion My brother went to his shop while Cali was still with us ( I was too dang ignorant at the time, didn’t know enough about salsa). My bro bought a lot of bells, some with some history too. Now that I appreciate the genre, I can tell there are no replacements for JCR’s stuff. Thanks for the post man, keep it up!
Hi Will, When you play the J3, is it muffled in any way? Do you get any overtones in real life that somehow didn't get captured in the video recording? I got a J3, and I have to really wrap my hand around it to get a dry sound.
Hey Arvind, so I did not do any muffling to the J3. I think the J3 has some overtone but the overtone isn’t so noticeable. The J2 for example, I believe cuts more and has more overtone. You do have to grip it to get a dryer sound. But for me, it wasn’t until I bought the J2 when I noticed the difference. J2 is much more lively. Hope this helps!
@@RomanPercussion Thanks Will! In your video the J3 does sound pretty dry, which I like. Good to know that you achieved that using some grip-based muting.

I'd say #1 and #3 really caught my ear...but all sounded great and musical.

I was faced with a tough choice between the JCR and LP Low Pitched Cowbells, but I would go with the JCR Cowbell.
The last one

Awesome! I love the ES-9, just make sure it’s mic’d properly. Doesn’t have a lot of projection since it’s a low pitch bell.
The Reyes is my ideal sound, the sad thing is Australia has a very limited supply of cowbells so we can usually only get LP or Meinl
I understand....Reyes Percussion is from Colombia, they have a Facebook page if you want to get one, I’m sure they can ship it to you. Here it is: facebook.com/reyespercusion, hope that helps!

The Best for me JCR from the Bronx.
needs more cowbell!
Ha! 🤣 You got that right! WISH I had more cowbells!
All sound great… I am surprised at how, for lack of reasonably-priced availability of Cali’s bells, the LP bell is close enough.
the first 3 have a uniform tone, on the other hand the JCR and the LP ES9 give it a different color!!!
I would use the Reyes for live performances and the last two for studio recording.
Damn, 1 and 2 sound way better than the other two, but I guess this is all about personal taste
Hey Ernesto, thanks for the comment. For sure, it’s about personal taste. Some people like certain pitches and some pick their bells depending on the key of the song to see which ones fits better.
Good job comparing apples to apples and muffling the JCR like that 👍👍 unreal
I didn’t muffle the JCR. Just the natural tone, didn’t do any EQ or anything. That bell doesn’t have a ton of overtone anyway.

The LP. Has a little ring to it. I like dry, but need a little ring to enter the musical world.
Yea I know what you mean, for me it depends on the bell but dry is necessary too. I love the LP bell, like you said a little ring, just enough 👌🏼
