I think that's the key. They demand an intelligent audience. It was worth sacrificing the big time in order to maintain their musical integrity. That's the only reason that they're "underrated". I know the term is abused all over YT, but it's fair to say that XTC were (are still) underrated. But, then again, can you be underated if you never actually attempted to be in the limelight? Because they certainly were not overlooked by their own fans.
@@steelyman08the other key is that they dropped out of a major US tour that would have made them popular to Americans. They also had a scummy record label that didn't market them very well and discouraged Andy's ideas for creative music videos.

There just not enough words in my vocabulary to praise Colin and Andy but if I do in a few it would be the Lennon/McCartney of the 80/90 's with Dave as there George Harrison.
You missed out Queen, but fair point there is no band today that can equate with these (Muse, Green Day, Kasabian etc. are good but not in the same league). Ever since the Illuminati decided that we should like JB and Gaga, they have cast aside quality in favour of temporary glamour and the cool factor. XTC have never been cool - they got their success by grafting hard and creating fantastic memorable songs which will still be loved long after I am dead (and I'm 27!)
colin moulding and andy partridge contribute to my quality of living.
XTC's music contains so many details that I never get tire of listening. It's so original that it doesn't age. One of the best bands of all time.
Agreed
I can't be the only person who thinks the horn arrangement, though sparse, is nothing short of absolutely stellar.
It's so airy. The calculated feel backs the melody nicely.
XTC, criminally underrated band. The Beatles in the shadow. From Spain I salute you, Colin and Andy, wherever you are!!!!!
This was the first band I ever saw live. These guy's are like old friends, we've been together for 35 years!
I love this song so much.
I swear this might be my favorite XTC song. It is just so engaging and re-listenable.
And beer tastes good in tins.. Test Matches we might win.. genius!
a gem from the most under-rated English band... magical, masterful music for intelligent listeners.

I'm stupidly happy listening to this song.
For me it's the Beatles closely followed by XTC. They reach that nerve... they're amazing.
the beatles could have been as great as xtc,if they'd been better friends!
Louis Caprani This is very Kinks-like. Check out "Autumn Almanac."
XTC are way greater (and more talented) than the beatles

@@kittenmittentheatreadventu3185 You're so right 👍 Beatles fans won't have it tho. Scared of the truth 🙉
@Simon price
Unmatched quality, indeed.I'll love XTC for my entire life, and i'm just 16!

This feels like a part 2 to "I Like That."
Oh my god. This is so good.
I love this. Great hook.
Love. This. Song.

Thumbs up!
Still sounds like them.
Complete this progression, everyone .... The Beatles, then 10CC, then XTC, then ....... ? (is there anyone worthy nowadays?) -
REM possibly.
Musica così non ne fanno più.
Ciao
Ecstasy !
@PsychoAnnalist Yes, I totally hear Roger Waters, too!
@ Jeff Bullock Ween (1995 - 2012)
so much for atheism

How about Coldplay?
Coldplay has gone into woke trash pop. Truly sad
