    The thing with a plant like this, it gives you a fast screen, great. When I have a 6 foot hedge that is 100 feet long let's say, every year the plants grow 7 feet tall according to this video. That's an insane amount of clippings and work compared to a slower growing plant. Patience and thinking ahead is key

    How do you trim the hedge on the other side? Do you ask your neighbors to allow you over everytime it needs hedging? Do they trim it? Do you put the hedge further inward, so that you can walk on what is legally your territory to trim your hedge? Or maybe you hire someone that your neighbor agrees to come trim? I would love to plant one of these on my yard, but don't really have any experience as to how these work.

    Great video here. I'm considering this plant or in the process of building a horizontal screen fence.. I too would like to say goodbye to noisy neighbors. Hopefully bush is dense enough to muff out their noisy dog!
    btw if I planted one plant could that extend width wise to create a hedge or would i need a few. I only want to grow about 50-60cm wide from fence. My back area is quite sandy too

      At least you can use a dog whistle to irritate the dog back until MAYBE they learn some manners. But most dog owners don’t have any. A very small percentage do. It’s the same no matter what you bring along...not everyone loves your dog/child like you do, dear world, so kindly keep them in check in public places. Your right to swing your fist ends where everyone else’s nose begins. When ignored, their fist may decide to swing freely and meet up with your nose as well. One can only hope.

    Someone over here in the UK had the same idea 40 years ago (as Edward says below) They were called conifers and they have been nothing but trouble ever since. You say it grows six feet per year? You must spend all day every day trimming it. Imagine if you left it alone for a year or two. Steer well clear of this plant my Ozzie cousins.

      This is about the best advice that anyone's offered so far! Who (other than the most naive) would ever want a weed like this? I'm trying my best to remove this kinda crap and, where I can, put up decent 'no maintenance' 'man made' fences.
      Some people must have nothing better to do with their time! 6 feet per year...

      J.Jesus Ramirez A common name for it is Lilly Pilly Tree. It can be pruned as a tree although it looks rangy. It is not a surface rooter, so it could be planted near a sidewalk. Since it grows near streams, it probably has high water requirements. Pruning it as a formal hedge looks like a good use of the plant.

    How can a trademark be the identity of a plant.? You identify the plant as GOODBYE NEIGHBOURS which is not the name of the plant at all

    • @timpickles8715
      @timpickles8715  9 років тому +18

      The plant is a type of lilly pilly,(Acmena smitii minor 'Goodbye neighbours'). The reason plants may be referred to by there trademarked name, is to differentiate between the many hundreds of other Acmena smithii minor that are on the market, Each having a different colour, habit, leaf size, dimensions.A. Smithii minor 'goodbye neighbours is different to A. smithii 'firescreen', which is different to A. smithii 'tiny trev', which is different to A. smithii 'cherry surprise' etc.So if it doesnt have The Goodbye Neighbours label attached it's not Goodbye Neighbours.

    • @hermit20082012
      @hermit20082012 9 років тому +8

      Tim Pickles your lack of understanding of trademarks is very poor
      Have a good read of the National Plant Labelling Guidelines. Firstly a trade mark is an adjective, Once it becomes a noun its a clear sign the trademark is being misused. In your video you continually refer to the plant as Goodbye Neighbours
      Trade marks CAN NOT identify the plant as you have suggested
      Isnt it obvious to you that the varieties you have used for differentiation are all VARIETIES (Firescreen, Tiny Trev and Cherry Surprise) while Goodbye Neighbours is a registered trademark. Does this seem strange to you?

    Here in Gwinnett County, we have a pattern of illegals living 5 families per house, and turning their home into a business, right in the middle of a subdivision. The county doesn't do squat about it. One popular thing, is to turn your home into a mini landscaping company, complete with landscaping supplies, vehicles, and a BIG GIANT building almost as big as the house. LOVELY! I need a 3 meter barrier, just so I can enjoy my home as if it was just a home, and I'm pretty much the only person in my neighborhood that wants their home to be a home.

    We moved to a nice upper class neighborhood with no HOA.. Things were mostly fine for the most part everyone kept their high priced properties and homes nicely kept up. 4 years ago a young couple moved in that have to be the laziest people in the world. I will never understand why they bought in a area like ours. Some of the trash has been along side their house in the open for over 2 years.. one of their bushes has a large plastic bag stuck under it for a couple of years. When they moved in they put a picnic table in the front yard, sprayed it down with some cheap spray paint thinking it would last... it was faded out after the first year and now is the center piece of their yard with weeds growing up around it. They do have a person that comes and mows their 5 acres weekly but that is all he gets paid for is the mowing so no trimming is ever done on the property.. when it is trash day they leave open trash cans out for the pickup. If a wind comes through I have to pick up trash off my property and they leave the rubish cans out for a week sometimes.. So this is why we need Good Bye Neighbor privacy hedges..

  • @oldbladderhorn949
    @oldbladderhorn949 6 років тому

    how far do you have to plant these away from your property line so as to not trespass onto your neighbour's land and how often will you need to trim them .
    maybe a nice dry stone wall would be an attractive alternative that you both could admire.
    you and your neighbours , you might even get too talking to each other.
    even become neighbourly a place to chat get to know each other.

    Do you have an outlet in the United States? I'm sure that delivering from Australia to U.S. would be most prohibitive.
