How do you trim the hedge on the other side? Do you ask your neighbors to allow you over everytime it needs hedging? Do they trim it? Do you put the hedge further inward, so that you can walk on what is legally your territory to trim your hedge? Or maybe you hire someone that your neighbor agrees to come trim? I would love to plant one of these on my yard, but don't really have any experience as to how these work.
Thanks for your advice. Just one question. If I make such a natural hedge along a neighbor boundary. I can maintain my side often but how I can be sure or manage the other side what might irritate the neighbor if I can not go that side to trim them off?
I planted 4 some years ago purchased from my local Bog W garden centre, (reputable source) they failed to grow. Planted other types of bush from cuttings nearby, they thrive, but the Tim's brand of Goodbye Neighbour has totally failed to thrive in southern Adelaide Australia.
How I wish this were available in the US! Would this plant be able to withstand snow in the winter and 10 degrees below zero temps? Please let us know when and where these might be available for those of us who are interested in the U.S. Thank You!
The root system is not invasive especially if you keep the plant pruned. We have a hedge growing here at the nursery. It hasn't lifted the paver or damaged the retaining wall. Come and check it out.
I planted poison ivy and poison oaks, Boston ivy, along with oleanders, on the edge of my property here in California. I don't have a nosy neighbors problem anymore.
nipzilla Lol...since they cut down a two sides of hedging and two trees in my garden, resorting to Paulownia I hope. Broken my back replanting hedges. And leaving nettles to party on the edges 😅
The thing with a plant like this, it gives you a fast screen, great. When I have a 6 foot hedge that is 100 feet long let's say, every year the plants grow 7 feet tall according to this video. That's an insane amount of clippings and work compared to a slower growing plant. Patience and thinking ahead is key
J.Jesus Ramirez A common name for it is Lilly Pilly Tree. It can be pruned as a tree although it looks rangy. It is not a surface rooter, so it could be planted near a sidewalk. Since it grows near streams, it probably has high water requirements. Pruning it as a formal hedge looks like a good use of the plant.
Thank you for this! I have some neighbors that like to dumb their cat litter into my back yard and they have this big mess back there that makes it look like it's in our back yard. We put up a privacy fence but they dump the cat litter along our fence into our yard still. I just hope it grows in my area.
I certainly hope your neighbors have stopped dumping on your property. I would highly suggest you get a camera and capture them on video. That way you can use it as evidence not only of illegal dumping, but also in court when you sue them for the cost to clean up their cat shit.
Thanks Mitch, I live in a cold valley so it does look like Surrey sometimes. This plant is cold tolerant. Sorry about the over use of the word Fantastic!
Great video here. I'm considering this plant or in the process of building a horizontal screen fence.. I too would like to say goodbye to noisy neighbors. Hopefully bush is dense enough to muff out their noisy dog! btw if I planted one plant could that extend width wise to create a hedge or would i need a few. I only want to grow about 50-60cm wide from fence. My back area is quite sandy too
At least you can use a dog whistle to irritate the dog back until MAYBE they learn some manners. But most dog owners don’t have any. A very small percentage do. It’s the same no matter what you bring along...not everyone loves your dog/child like you do, dear world, so kindly keep them in check in public places. Your right to swing your fist ends where everyone else’s nose begins. When ignored, their fist may decide to swing freely and meet up with your nose as well. One can only hope.
What is the name of the plant? To try to find it in LatinAmerica! Also would you please, show process to mantain, how to make it square? But no so wide!😯 thks!
Someone over here in the UK had the same idea 40 years ago (as Edward says below) They were called conifers and they have been nothing but trouble ever since. You say it grows six feet per year? You must spend all day every day trimming it. Imagine if you left it alone for a year or two. Steer well clear of this plant my Ozzie cousins.
This is about the best advice that anyone's offered so far! Who (other than the most naive) would ever want a weed like this? I'm trying my best to remove this kinda crap and, where I can, put up decent 'no maintenance' 'man made' fences. Some people must have nothing better to do with their time! 6 feet per year...
your description sounds like the dreaded "Leighton Green" , an ugly fast growing pine that is becoming common coz councils won't approve high fences & ppl grow them for privacy , this craze will end in tears tho !
I bought two from Tim's nursery maybe 18 months ago. They are now about 3 metres tall. I'm allowing mine to grow into trees rather than hedging. So far they are looking superb and pest free
Thanks Jesus. Everyone's in a hurry these days so they want a hedge fast. Modern hedge trimmers make pruning so much easier. I use a Pole hedge trimmer at my place.
I wonder if these are available in the UK. My neighbours are lovely but like many uk townies they are building like crazy. So it's more a case of wanting to say "Goodbye neighbour's buildings" and hello green again.
Townies sure do know how to ruin the scenery in a flash. They move to the country for its quaintness and quiet, and then bring the town mentality and arrogance with them to wreck it all...
The plant is a type of lilly pilly,(Acmena smitii minor 'Goodbye neighbours'). The reason plants may be referred to by there trademarked name, is to differentiate between the many hundreds of other Acmena smithii minor that are on the market, Each having a different colour, habit, leaf size, dimensions.A. Smithii minor 'goodbye neighbours is different to A. smithii 'firescreen', which is different to A. smithii 'tiny trev', which is different to A. smithii 'cherry surprise' etc.So if it doesnt have The Goodbye Neighbours label attached it's not Goodbye Neighbours.
Tim Pickles your lack of understanding of trademarks is very poor Have a good read of the National Plant Labelling Guidelines. Firstly a trade mark is an adjective, Once it becomes a noun its a clear sign the trademark is being misused. In your video you continually refer to the plant as Goodbye Neighbours Trade marks CAN NOT identify the plant as you have suggested Isnt it obvious to you that the varieties you have used for differentiation are all VARIETIES (Firescreen, Tiny Trev and Cherry Surprise) while Goodbye Neighbours is a registered trademark. Does this seem strange to you?
A select form Mathew. It has much smaller leaves than Smithii so it is better for hedging. Al round a much better plant so don't let people tell you it's the same plant. Check for the Goodbye Neighbours label. That's my ugly head.
how far do you have to plant these away from your property line so as to not trespass onto your neighbour's land and how often will you need to trim them . maybe a nice dry stone wall would be an attractive alternative that you both could admire. you and your neighbours , you might even get too talking to each other. even become neighbourly a place to chat get to know each other.
In the philippines we use 6 feet hollow blocks with concrete fence and barbed wire on top to keep everything out.. its not the nosy vecinos that we hate but felons... the fence is the most important thing no need for guns in most cases..
I need these - in fake. Faux. Can't kill. Do your Worst. Lol. I have horrible, vindictive neighbors and a long fence line. Hi Tim, We are planning to plants those in our garden, but we realised that we have only 30 cms of soil and under that is just rocks. How deep this plants need to root properly. Thanks.
hi tim like your goodbye neighbours and is it possable for you to post it to me in Ireland and what is the latin name for goodbye as i have never seen or heard of it beforeMartin
Hi Tim, do these flower and produce edible berries? Also if left to grow how wide and tall can they grow? I am looking to hide a two storey neighbor's house but dont want it growing into their yard so need to know how far away from fence I can plant it
Here in Gwinnett County, we have a pattern of illegals living 5 families per house, and turning their home into a business, right in the middle of a subdivision. The county doesn't do squat about it. One popular thing, is to turn your home into a mini landscaping company, complete with landscaping supplies, vehicles, and a BIG GIANT building almost as big as the house. LOVELY! I need a 3 meter barrier, just so I can enjoy my home as if it was just a home, and I'm pretty much the only person in my neighborhood that wants their home to be a home.
Ha,ha, I love you Aussies, only in Australia would you have a hedge plant called "Goodbye Neighbours" love it!
Think ur confused with Canadians m8
@@KzEProduction No they're definitely Aussies m8!

Feeling is probably mutual 😮mate
Too bad they don't sell this in America. I have some neighbors from hell I'm just dying to say Bye Bye to!
Idk I've seen in America b4
If you planted this 'weed' then you'd be the neighbour from hell!

What an excellent title!!, exactly the reason I want the hedge for, I hate having neighbours, Alan, in Norfolk, England.
Me too, I hate having neighbours, I'd like to have that hedging plant.
I'd like screen out my neighbours with a giant fly swat.
My best friend, Thank you for your hard work in making the video. I enjoyed the good video. Have a happy day.
Geezz how I wish you're garden center was here in the States! I really need the Goodbye neighbours plants badly!
For those in the USA asking about Lilly pillies they tend to grow in areas of good rainfall from temperate to tropical.

If you don't want to be constantly pruning your privacy hedge, plant a metal cyclone fence with reed fencing attached to the front or back.
