    I LOVE the "slings" you have the boat hanging in while you are gluing it. Great idea! And the method of skinning is so logical, let gravity help!

    Try using a soldering Iron to “cut” the fabric.. it cuts clean and melts the edge too so it won’t fray!

    Very cool - instead of using staples for the second overlap on the stems could you run another bead of hot glue and fold over that?

    thats great stuff.
    it would never have occured to me to use hot glue.
    ive only done 3 sof kayaks before so stitching the top centre deck is all that is required if you have a wide enough cloth.

    • @bluewondercanoe
      @bluewondercanoe  7 років тому +1

      Okay - your´s is a kayak - this one i a canadian style canoe. There are no decks for stitching. The hot glue is an easy way for me to pre-fixing the fabric before mounting the outwhales. After mounting the outwhales comes ironing. Such as with your kayak : after stitching comes ironing. Different types of boats - different ways for building that. Thanks for your comment ..

    • @jadekayak01
      @jadekayak01 7 років тому

      bluewondercanoe the difference is obvious but your technique still has merit for a kayak to reduce the stress on the centre seam.
      the hot glue bead would act like a gasket and asdist with keeping the hull fabric under some tension independant of the seam tension.
      im all for learning tricks from other industries/methods to help.
      the bedt part is you can do a kayak hull in one colour fabric and the deck in another(because of fabric width maybee or custom printed fabric) and sticking with clear sealant.
      i saw one kayak skinned with a std printed fabric from the fabric store then polyeurathaned.
      all the best with you boat.its a great looking example of light n functional

      oh yes : the stress of the centre seam - I have never thinking about that. Of course the hot glue can be helpfull, I think. Have a nice time.

      It is still a kayak, not canoe. Canadian canoe has no frame, it relies on the sides/bottom planking (be that bark, cedar strips, plywood or polymer plastics) for structurall strength. Canoe also is not a multi-chine hull.

    Have you given a thought to cover SOF canoes with precoated fabrics? Like the ones used in the Yostwerks website?
    Thanks for sharing.

    Did you shrink the skin tight with a steam iron.? This works great on polyester but I'm not sure about nylon.

    • @bluewondercanoe
      @bluewondercanoe  4 роки тому

      No this not a steam iron. But I keep the nylon wet before ironing...

    Brilliant ideas with the hot glue, hanging bag and temporary sewing in the middle. Thanks for sharing this. Do you find the nylon remains tight or does it loosen up over time? Better than polyester cloth I assume since you use it here?

    smart. but reinforcing the hot glue with nails or staples would be a good move.

    • @bluewondercanoe
      @bluewondercanoe  5 років тому +1

      the hot glue is only for temporary fixing. After glueing the outwhale, the nylon is bulletproof fixed and ready for ironing. No nails needed ...

    How does this method differ with polyester? I’m wanting to build a canoe, probably the arrow 14 (unless I can be guided otherwise). I’ve never built one before but I’m mechanically inclined and confident I have the skills.
    I want a solo canoe that tracks straight as an arrow and can hold gear, (think multi day deer hunting trip)

    • @bluewondercanoe
      @bluewondercanoe  5 років тому

      I never used polyester - so I can´t give the right answer - sorry. But I heard that nylon is much stonger an much more shrinkabel - so I use that.

    • @lazydragonslayer
      @lazydragonslayer 5 років тому

      bluewondercanoe I’ve read the same thing, though polyester is still plenty strong enough to work.
      The advantage -as I’ve read- is that polyester is easier to paint and doesn’t absorb as much water as nylon. The skin can become less taught on the first use with nylon.
      Any thoughts?

    • @bluewondercanoe
      @bluewondercanoe  5 років тому

      @@lazydragonslayer Ok the facts: I use nylon fabric with COELAN for coating. Nice result. Nylon absorbs water and goes limply. Unfortunetly is COELAN also hygroscopic. Normaly a bad constelation. But in water the canoe goes for 8 hours without any problems. But if the humidity is hight, raining about the whole day and night, the skin goes limply. Wrinkles to be seen. One day in the sun, and teh skin looks fine again. I will do a try with polyester at a model... btw. Nice contact with you! Are you on facebook? Hallo! Ich liebe deiner Kanu's. Kann einer Kanu mit SOF uber einer Stein fahren ohne zu Riesen? ( Hello! I love your canoes. Can a canoe of this sort mit SOF ride over a rock without ripping the fabric? ) Danke :)

    • @bluewondercanoe
      @bluewondercanoe  7 років тому

      Thanks for your interest, but who want to ride a canoe over rocks ? It´s build for water ;-) By the way. In white water the stones are mostly roundet - no problem. In slowly or quiet water the stones can be very pointed and sharp. That´s a problem for the coating fewer for the nylon fabric. It takes a knife or broken glass to destroy the fabric by cutting not by ripping. These are my experiences.
