    The sound engineer deserves a medal. You know how hard it is to nail a live presentation like this? He caught everything, and the balance is perfect.

    I don't think there is a better illustration of the benefits of working together than a symphony, the many different sounds and skills joining to produce such beauty.

    Interesting choice here to use solo instruments at the start. The Siegfried Idyll was originally composed a birthday present for his wife Cosima and performed to her on the stairs of their swiss home by a small chamber group of wind and strings. It was only later expanded to full chamber orchestra when Wagner was compelled to publish the piece to ease financial hardship. I believe Runnicles chose to play the opening with solo strings to try and recreate this original iteration of the work, and it's a beautifully tender gesture I haven't seen in many other performances.

      This is quite interesting to hear - I recently played the piece as part of a chamber orchestra, and aside from two violins, two horns, and two clarinets there were only one of each instrument - and as far as I'm concerned it sounds just as beautiful with a smaller orchestra as it does a larger, perhaps even more so.

    The best interpretation! Using "String quartet" to introduce the main theme really gives the warm, cosy feeling that Richard Wagner wanted to express and then composition becomes majestic as the whole orchestra comes in. It feels as if the whole city is in love.

    • @SabriiAnderson
      @SabriiAnderson 8 років тому +3

      Anyone that has complained that this interpretation is too fast needs to understand that originally, Wagner did not intend to have people perform his dedication to his son as slowly as some other chamber orchestras have aimed to do. So I would understand if other listeners would prefer that it were slower, but to assert yourself to say that the first intent of the music was to be performed slower is not right.

    The conductor probably didn't know it was composed to Cosima's birthday - I hear zero intimacy in their playing , he doesn't let soloists express themselves .The middle episode ( starts from 9:53) is played like a German march and in general he played the whole piece with the same facial exrpession. How is it possible ?
    Listen to Gergiev with Munich Philarmonic , those guys really have it.
