Honestly, sometimes I still miss it, even though I've seen the episode many times and know it's there. I had to replay that part in this video a few times and then pause it in order to see where it was.

I'm impressed you noticed the driver, a lot of reactors completely miss that detail. It's a nice subtle touch that something DID change for the better. As I've said on other videos, Jackie and Rose probably spent years envisioning the driver who hit Pete as some kind of cackling monster who ran him down maliciously before speeding off... but the reality is, he was just a kid, and probably drove away because he was scared of the consequences. He maybe spent his entire life wracked with constant fear and shame over what he'd done, and was never able to atone for it. Thanks to Rose's actions, that man stayed and faced what he'd done, and Jackie doesn't even sound mad at him over it. Pete still died, but SOME good came from it all.
It's heartbreaking but at the same time warming. Because while Pete still died, Rose and Jackie never have to wonder the what if's about who did it, the driver also likely got some leniency for staying too, especially since as a result of this it wasn't a murder and maybe manslaughter or they may think Pete committed Suicide and ran into the car on purpose.
I love the conversation the doctor has with the couple. It's a theme with the Doctor: there's beauty and meaning to be found in the world around you. The innate value of ordinary is equal to that of extraordinary. He probably knows that better than anyone because he knows that interfering with the death of one average man on one average day can break reality itself. We all make up the fabric of history and even our simple stitch is essential. The doctor can see that the serendipitous meeting of two future lovers on a street corner is of equal consequence to the birth of kings or the fall of empires. That's one of my favorite repeated messages of the show.

I think this episode more than any other in this season really demonstrates the strength of doctor who. Last episode we had a slime monster controlling journalists in a space station and now we have an exploration of truly human emotional experience through a semi absurd framing device.
This was the first episode to crush me. No spoilers, but… it happens a lot 💔

what's fascinating with reactions to this one is that each person is impacted by different scenes, especially when they're a dad, or if they've lost a parent. it's lovely how cathartic this one can be for so many people.
This episode is so underrated. It doesn’t pop up in nearly enough favorites list. This is the reason she joins the TARDIS. She didn’t agree to come until she heard it traveled in time. The instinct to want to talk to your parent one more time is so complicated. Like the story of Casper. I lost my Dad as a teenager. I understand this all too well.

It's too bad more people don't get it when Rose says her dad was a bit of a Del boy. She immediately gets the kind of guy he must have been instead of the one her mom told her about. Also more people should watch Only Fools and Horses.

This is an episode all about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people. The Doctor, despite being the titular hero of the series, saves no one. Meanwhile, Rose "saves" her dad, and Pete saves the world (and the Doctor) through a heroic sacrifice. The Doctor keeps repeating the message, first to Rose, and then to the couple getting married, there is no such thing as an ordinary life. "Ordinary" people are the most extraordinary people in the world. A powerful episode.

I had forgotten that this was indeed one of the more heart-wrenching episodes of the show. And good eye, spotting the Bad Wolf graffiti!
Theres a fun parallel with this coming immediately after The Long Game (at least TV wise, some debate on where the expanded universe stuff takes place).
Like The Long Game showed Adam wasn't a good companion (willing to risk breaking time for financial gain), Fathers Day shows that Rose is flawed as well. but the two episodes also show how differently Rose & Adam responded to getting it wrong.
On the one hand, Adam was acting out of greed in wanting to get rich. And then said it was all the Doctor's fault, that Adam got the chip & tried to get future knowledge.
On the other hand, Rose's heart was in the right place in just wanting to save her dad. And then she took the blame ("is this my fault") & she was genuinely sorry after she saw the consequences of her saving Pete.
it took me almost 6 days to watch this video because I still cannot watch this episode without crying. This episode destroyed me the first time I saw it, and I still cry every time I rewatch the show. Its amazing
Making this a separate comment cause I think its quite a potent point, but this episode actually demonstrates how time works in this show. Time is a flexible, fluid substance but it isn't invulnerable. It could accommodate a small stretch, going from a hit and run causing Pete to die alone to a responsible accident and rose being there to comfort him. But if he actually survived, that is too much and time snaps. You can imagine how this interacts with historical figures mechanically. People I think really underestimate how reasonable the time travel rules in doctor who are.
This episode was the first time I saw that British television could be so emotional. Previously I only knew it from silly comedies (ie ‘Are you being served?’, ‘Keeping up Appearances’, ‘Monty Python’, etc.) or historical pieces (ie ‘Masterpiece Theater’, ‘Downton Abbey’, etc.).
Those creatures were the physical manifestation of the Time Travel Protection Conjecture (or Chronology Protection Conjecture). In sci-fi, this is a "rule" of time travel that says anytime someone makes an attempt to change a major event in history, the Universe will conspire to ensure that the change will not happen. (In real world physics it just means that when a wormhole to the past is opened and stable, it collapses when any more mass is introduced so that nothing can go back in time. So particles can travel backwards but not molecules or bigger.) This was an interesting and rule-setting episode. You can only change events in the past if they were meant to be changed to begin with.
Great example of someone recklessly messing with time and seeing the consequences.
I think the show handling such interesting and deep philosophical concepts while simultaneously being an incredibly approachable family show is why it's lasted as long as it has. Seeing the doctor face moral quandaries is the best part of the show imo
it's so nice that you pay attention to the little details, doctor who is very rewarding in that regard, always foreshadowing stuff

I love how Pete figures things out and takes all this bizarreness in stride. He’s smart, he’s not easily phased by this stuff (before he realized he was going to die). You can see him in Rose. The Rose who joined the Doctor. I could see Pete doing the same. And this course of events made him a hero. “Thanks for saving me”. That line meant a lot
I think with that line he is saying that she saved not just his life (from the car accident), but from being a dad who wasn't there for his family to one who was literally willing to give his life for them.
best episode of the whole show
Despite it being the typical monster-of-the-week episode, I felt a heaviness when it aired and at the time I didn't understand why. Now it's obvious what the story was setting up, and it boils down to two things:
A. the Doctor is not invincible
B. Rose is loyal to a fault ... which manages to be an actual character flaw she has apart from, y'know, getting locked in rooms all the time and lacking the ability to run ... she'll always come back to the people she loves
Your episode 4 reaction, by the way, left me a little confused. I started to think I was wrong about her mom's name being Jackie and it was in fact Sharine. (Not your fault. Just a slight hiccup in the way the reaction was edited.)
On one hand it is sad he "had to die" and happy that "he didn't have to die alone" but... our past is what makes us who we are. The good... and the bad.
Also imagine Jackie's shock if she looks back at her wedding photos and see a full grown Rose in them.
Such a nice emotional episode.
THIS is why the Doctor can't go back and fix things after the fact.

Glad you liked the story. Remember at the end of the first episode, ‘Rose,’ when the Doctor asks Rose to come with him, but she declines? Why did she then change her mind when the Doctor came back to her a second time? It could be that she took the plunge because he’d given her a second chance to travel with him, but I’ve always wondered if she made that decision based on the Doctor’s line that the TARDIS could also travel in time. When Rose hears this, she hesitates a few seconds before committing herself. Maybe it was in those few seconds she had formulated a plan that by travelling with the Doctor she could hope that somewhere down the line she could convince the Doctor to take her back to see her dad when he was alive, and prevent what happened to him in the ‘Father’s Day’ episode?
Bit of a long shot, but it would have been nice to have had the Doctor ask Rose in this episode, “Is this why you wanted to come with me in the first place? That you knew if you could travel in a time machine you could go back to when your dad was alive, and save him?” It would have been interesting to see Rose’s response to this.

Rose is from the East End of London, and they often drop the T when they speak. Billie Piper is more educated/posh than her character, so she doesn't talk like that in real life. This is also one of her (and Christopher Eccleston's) favourite episodes.

Not really. The exact circumstances that arose in this episode (someone preventing their parent from being killed) never occurred before or afterwards.
Maybe this episode broke them.
There's a clear explanation in the script: "Two sets of us being there made that a vulnerable point." That's enough of a difference to explain the absence of Reapers from the other paradoxes.

This is the most favourite among the fandom but for me "controversial" i know this was one of my least favourite episodes as I'm not really in for the whole soap opera and family route I'm more into the science fiction route the only interesting bit for me was the time reapers because I thought Rose did really stupid thing and really annoyed me in this episode but the Doctor has to have some blame in this too as you think he would had known better.
When he says "apes" I believe he's referring to the human race because remember he's an alien.
Never really liked this episode. Probably because of the awful CGI creatures but watching it again, I'm disliking it a bit less.
A fantastic reaction of a very nice episode. Doctor Who does'nt have the best special effects, but the writing is fantastic. So much more emotions, so much more ethical issues, than the average sci fi show. Therefore, it's the best of the bunch. Thanks for a great youtube channel. 🫶
