If it weren’t for the fact that Terminators cannot 'self-terminate,' the easiest method for terminating Sarah or John would have been a suicide attack using the hydrogen cell.
I do find it odd that in T1 the terminator doesnt craft or obtain explosives or a sniper? "Hey just what you see pal" , isnt enough to convince me the arsenal is limited. Go to another store or something. I don't believe it has to avoid collateral damage either. (Concealing its existence is understandable though) Its hyped as an infiltration unit but goes full on soldier when target is in sight. Rather than planting traps to ensure victory. But if we say these things are smart, why arent they smart...
they have two primary Objectives. eliminate the target and ensure Skynet is made. Explosives would draw suspicion to it so a Terminator Blends in, looking like a normal person. explosives cause collateral damage and would raise an alarm, it may even destroy a target they were assigned to protect or keep alive(some terminators in the comics were sent to keep the Dr. Serena Korgen alive to ensure Skynet was made.)

14:08 shut up shut up shut up, i prefer to think there are perfectly logical reasons why skynet decided a hud display is the best option for its units, just because it looks so awesome
Huds would be completely useless and unnecessary for machines. Any information they display would be better accessed directly, instead of from a visual system. However, if we assume that a lot of technology Skynet uses started from human tech, then it makes more sense. That would be an incredibly useful tool for humans to debug robot functions. Skynet just never saw the need to engineer it away.
the machine does not rely on conceptual formats like a Hecatonchires system, the way Briareos does in Appleseed. it relies on a more rigid format and targeting system. in the first movie it is seen that the machine uses the HUD for placement and hand/eye coordination as it scanned the width of a door and also when it was reading the address book as it found Sarah's mother's address. the reason why it was not shown in the beginning was to give the viewer a sense of belief that the antagonist is just a Human.
