iPAQs probably deserve an episode of When Phones were Fun although they are technically not phones, they can be turned into a phone via a module. They are the wildest implementation of modularity together with Handspring PDAs. I remember I had an iPAQ (one of the 5500 series?) which was almost a phone. It had a sticking out antenna just for wifi, and had a sim card slot that serves no purpose. I guess HP wanted to make it a phone but changed their mind at the last minute

Symbian was way ahead of its time and I miss it. I have both a Nokia 2760H and a 6133. These phones still look and feel very modern. these were the first devices I owned that could play music on, send pictures via Bluetooth to Windows Mobile phones and store files on without the heavy need of a computer. The 6133 was so modern in fact, I could use Yahoo Messenger with most of the features the desktop-class app had while I was away from home. These phones were a dream for me at the time. The speakers on them are loud and crisp. I love snapping my 6133 open and closed with the side button. Every now and then I'll boot them up just for the pure nostalgia along with other devices I've collected over the years.

I wrote a proposal for a universal 'app store' for Symbian powered devices back around 2002. It was rejected because 'Nokia didn't believe there was a big enough market for apps'.
The term "app" goes back to the 1980s. You can find early 90s episodes of "Computer Chronicles" that use the term. It seems people believe this term was invented by Apple or the smartphone era, but it wasn't.
I was handling logistics and used this phone extensively for email, specially with attachments. I even replaced its screen later on . created tons of themes for it. it was one of the best phones I ever used. It still works, connects to GPRS but web is too bloated for it to handle browsing.

Oh, MrMobile, thanks for another portion of nostalgia. I remember when I was a kid I used to go to the mobile phone stores and take promotion journals from there and then read them through. I remember how on the last pages I could see phones like SE M600 (that was my dream phone, and actually still is), P990i, Nokia N73, N95. I knew everything about these phones and believed that one day I'll get myself one of them. After some time I got myself K700i, then K790i, K810i. I remember how I used to modify it's firmware with community patches, installing elfs on it, changing anything on the phone (like menu styles, hidden system configuration, camera drivers) from itself via MiniCommander app. Back in the day phones really were fun. Right now, even though most of the phones run Android (which has Linux kernel under the hood, that is capable of many things) and some of them are user-unlockable, firwmare is mostly the same.
I had the P800 & P900 and I absolutely loved them, I so regret stupidly giving both away. Call me crazy, but I would love to see an episode of this series on the original iPhone. I know, I know, it is the very phone that precipitated the design trend which this series decries, but I think it’s important to remember how, at that time, it truly was a new, unique, and, yes, fun take on the mobile phone. So fun, in fact, and executed with such polish, that it became the driving force behind smartphones becoming mainstream devices. Design stagnation non withstanding, I think that is something all tech nerds such as myself should celebrate.
i had this phone, i made a trip in Italy at 2004, so, i downloaded tom-tom maps on p910 and i purchased a GPS bluetooth receiver. so i had my own GPS device before it was a thing at the time... so happy with that phone, it really showed the future.
I remember spending way too much money hunting down a NA variant of this phone (p910a). I used it religiously for a couple of years before upgrading to a Palm Treo. UIQ will always hold a special place in my heart.
Never had or used a P910 however in my childhood years, my dad brought the later P990i which marks our first experience with smartphones. I couldn't clearly remember about the performance of the P990i but I do still remember the usefulness of an physical scroll wheel which is one of the things I would bring back today!
Man I have to say this series is my favorite thing on UA-cam. I forgot how much of a nerd I was untill I start seeing these old phones. About lost my mind on the Nextel series. That hit close to home. We would type in random two way numbers and prank people...
Hey Michael, David from DSNY. I love these videos. So entertaining, I love these vintage phones. It's great to see how far phones have come and what we thought was so futuristic is now a piece of mobile history. Best youtuber for tech!
Oh god, how I loved this phone. The P910 (and later the P990) were truly the phones which started my love affair with smartphones which lasts until this day. Thanks for an absolutely great episode!
I miss Sony jog dials. I remember having one on an old Sony minidisc player (MZR909)? Great for one handed use and offered good tactility too when scrolling through lists. It did leave an indent on your finger if used too extensively though!
Hey Mike! Funny and informative video! Glad we could talk today and it was a pleasure having you stake out for a little while at my shop! I'll be watching more of these. - Ian from Mystic
The most impressive feature of Symbian from a power user perspective was that it offered true multitasking, Something which iOS took several iterations to achieve.
I had one back in the day it was my first smartphone. God I loved that thing, I went through a few batteries. Watched movies on long journeys, music, and gamed on it too
Hi, Michael Thank you for writing and producing this review with the P910i you acquired from me🥰. As always video quality from you is top-notch! This series is one of my favorite on UA-cam. It takes us back to a time when mobile devices used funky branding, features and customizability. The contrast is almost unbelievable when compared to modern devices - such as the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy lineups. I thought I threw a full sized sim card in there.... my bad! I have so much of those just lying around. Trust me, I will be showing this video to my friends, as I now have BRAGGING RIGHTS!!!!😎😎😎 EDIT: Fun fact, this phone was used by Andrew Garfield's character in the 2010 film, The Social Network.
Thanks again for making this phone available to me, Michael! Sony Ericsson is requested quite often and it was a pleasure to cover a device kept in such excellent condition. Really appreciate the opportunity!
I couldn't stop staring at that headphone jack cover at 5:48 😂. My dad was a mechanical engineer for cell phones in the 90s so we have a bunch and all the rubber looks just like that. That small piece brought back so many memories
Mine too, and since then I really wanting to have one. But it was too expensive for me to have it that I might break it. When he retiring it, the phone is too old and there are better ones in the market, even though they are not touchscreen.
I still wish sony would make P910 on modern era version with bigger screen, slimmer, but still have the qwerty flip keyboard. 4:25, i love that qwerty keyboard. At that time, it's better than nothing, almost other phone only had numeric keypad. And i have no problem using my thumb, maybe because i'm asian, it still fit for me (even though i am 180cm tall). And it doesn't need arrow/cursor button because we can use the jog dial to move the cursor.
Great series! I had the P910 back in the day (and later the P990 and P1). A great phone for it's time. It's amazing the amount of accessories included back then. The only thing I did not like back then was that firmware updates were often at the mercy of the network provider as to whether you received it or not. Phones were often customized to the network.
Really loved these. I was too young to own one but I could see where Sony Ericsson were going and I also really liked it’s successor the P990 despite the issues it had with RAM management, it was quite clear that smartphones were the way to go, but the underlying software needed more refinement.
when i was in college this was worlds coolest phone on market....only rich kids could afford it and everybodys dream phone i saved money almost 2 years to buy it but when i finally saved enough that was late because the phone get outdated.....sad story of my university time😁now i have iphone13promax but when i watch this video felt so excited like that good old days.....thanks alot sir
2.9 inch display?!? I thought the screen was huge and the time . It always fascinated me that Symbian died, considering , it was at one time omnipresent 🐼
Ah yes… i remember in high school my friend had a P800, at times i borrowed his just to browse the apps with the stylus, in which my Nokia didn’t have. Phones were fun back then
I had a friend at the office who had this. At the time it was the bleeding edge because it combined a phone and a PDA. I was carrying two devices in my pockets then. A symbian phone and a Palm PDA. So witnessing this expensive juggernaut was something. p/s - drew a breath when you mentioned the jogdial. Had it on my Sony Clie Palm PDA and later on company issued Blackberry. Tactile sensation at its peak. I really missed it.
For those who wondered what that sleek, thin laptop featured at around 9:30 when talking about phones replacing laptops: My best guess is that it's the Nexdock 360 (which is a laptop but without the computing bits)
Defo one of my dream phones back in the day, when PDA phones simply oozed surrealism. was in high school when it first came out & was simply too damn broke to afford something so godlike back in the day. nevertheless, it was one of the reasons why i was so into phones & so enthused by new releases. a stark contrast to where i stand today when phones are concerned, as anything that're not foldables ain't even gonna pique my interest. it's a rather weird thing, coming to think about it. the dream of seeing smartphones becoming a reality was why i got so excited about phones back in the day, & that excitement was thoroughly snuffed out not long after the dream did become reality to the point where everyone was owning one.
The amount of research on stuff that isn't easy to find given the period, unique expertese from someone who was a mobile phone enthusiast before phones were widespread enough for that to be a practical thing for most people, the effort of sourcing these things and getting them working, subject matter that remains timeless in a space where every video usually is never watched again after a month and all wrapped up in a package of phenomenal editing. this series is nothing short of amazing.
I still have my Sony Ericsson P1i.. the last iteration of this series. I had lost the charger, so found one on eBay and brought it back to life. Still love it and I remember the attention magnet it was when I bought it. Ah, the good old days, as @theMrMobile says, when phones were fun 🙂
I really feel that time was a better time to see tech, right now it's like seeing the same device by different brands and that's it, no major changes, maybe with the foldable s we will have something new and i would love to see a case that allow to have physical keys
I had the P800 and loved it. The Jog wheel predates blackberry. It was a original Sony Mobile feature as seen on phones like the Sony CMD Z5 back in 2000. Also, I can't believe you didn't show of how good the dock was. It would mirror your phones display to your PC and you could even use your PC as input to control the phone, I'd always reply to friends SMS message with through my PC.
The optional flip reminds me of my old Samsung Luminix SCH-N255 with interchangeable "chin" - included, of course, in the box - which could convert it from a 3310esque bar to a bona fide flip phone. AFAIK it should be quite rare, as most of the research I done on it indicates a very limited LATAM/SA release.
Mr mobile! My favorite channel! I swear about an hour ago I was looking at your channel like man I've watched the latest ten episodes already and then boom! Love these videos!!!!
Forget about the Ericson. Great to see you're using Surface Duo 2. Is a re-review coming? I'm using Duo 1 and since the latest Android 11 update it's been awesome. Very smooth experience and bugs are now brought to such a minimum level that I rarely encounter them (used to be daily business).
Still remember the day I bought my P800. Loved the optional keypad, although it had resistive "dimples" that pressed on the touchscreen to dial numbers. I think I removed it rather quickly. There was a great racing game for it that used the scrollwheel as a steering wheel.
I had a P990, a PSP and a K750i and that was an awesome set up. Full PSP online access anywhere and being able to download ROMs and stuff or stream video wherever you were. The camera on the k750i was amazing at the time and the fact they all use the same memory stick duo format was the extra little touch that made it so usefully back then.
I honestly like that you are doing these videos for the information and the fun of it. It brings me back a lot of memories these types of phone brands. The first and second generation cell phone i really love it. :) I can tell you back in 2003 i had a Nokia 6600, 2007 Nokia 6120 classic, Sony ericsson W960... So on; I have finally bought a flip phone once again after seeing this video. It brought a lot of memories, I know, i live in a different generation but i got to disconnect from all the social media, the smartphone life - phone dings to much from all the apps we have now n days. It feels weird having a old era phone, Although at the same time, it get the job done; Like calls and texting "the original button press experience". :D Thumbs up on your content! I really enjoy them.
Ohhhhh the memories!! I had the P800 and upgraded to the P900! I loved those 'smart' phones! I really did as much as I could with them. Loved it! Can't believe I forgot all about them! Thanks for taking me down memory lane MrMobile!
I remember this phone being a grail here in Portugal, it was displayed like the arc of the convenant in a window in Portugal's largest mall, people were fascinated, including me as a young boy, i remember going to the mall just to see the latest gadgets on the windows. Good and simple times. Movie references, as always, on point Mr.Mobile. Great video. Cheers from Portugal.
I owed this phone and loved it at the time. I remember people saying smartphones will never take off and look what we have today. People are saying the same about the duo now but I have a feeling flip, folding and duel screens will be. Big part of the future.
My dad had this as his work phone when it came out. Got handed down to me after a couple of years. Was such an awesome thing to be a kid and having this phone (no cell service, but still). I eventually took it apart cuz I lost the charger and I was going through a phase in which I was tinkering with electronics a lot to see how things looked on the inside. Good times.
Oh wow, I had a P800 around the time I finished highschool back around 2004 or so. I remember liking it, but one of the little tabs on the side of the keypad was broken so it would touch the screen when closed. The keypad wasn't a fancy thing like on the P910, it just floated over the touchscreen when closed and when you pushed a button a tiny stylus on the back of each key would just hit a button on the touchscreen. Barely worked on my phone since said tab was broken and the edge of the keypad was always touching the screen.

The only tech channel i have subscribed and await for videos. Please keep this segment always when phones were fun.
Never had or used a P910 however in my childhood years, my dad brought the later P990i which marks our first experience with smartphones. I couldn't clearly remember about the performance of the P990i but I do still remember the usefulness of an physical scroll wheel which is one of the things I would bring back today!
You are the only one that keeps my 2000s memories alive with these nostalgic devices. I wish we could get them back for when life was fun.
Man I have to say this series is my favorite thing on UA-cam. I forgot how much of a nerd I was untill I start seeing these old phones. About lost my mind on the Nextel series. That hit close to home. We would type in random two way numbers and prank people...
I had the P1i for the longest time and loved it. Sony Ericsson made great phones back in the day!
Man, I loved that crazy clever keyboard.
Hey Michael, David from DSNY. I love these videos. So entertaining, I love these vintage phones. It's great to see how far phones have come and what we thought was so futuristic is now a piece of mobile history. Best youtuber for tech!
This is my favorite series on UA-cam
I used a P900 then! And oh it was such glorious phone! My first smartphone ever!
Oh god, how I loved this phone. The P910 (and later the P990) were truly the phones which started my love affair with smartphones which lasts until this day. Thanks for an absolutely great episode!
Excellent video as always!
P910 was the beast of it’s time . I loved the detachable keyboard . Thanks for this video
Nah,.. windows mobile already offered true multitasking and for 'power user', nothing beats windows mobile at that time..
I had one back in the day it was my first smartphone. God I loved that thing, I went through a few batteries. Watched movies on long journeys, music, and gamed on it too
Hi, Michael
Thank you for writing and producing this review with the P910i you acquired from me🥰.
Trust me, I will be showing this video to my friends, as I now have BRAGGING RIGHTS!!!!😎😎😎
EDIT: Fun fact, this phone was used by Andrew Garfield's character in the 2010 film, The Social Network.
Thanks again for making this phone available to me, Michael! Sony Ericsson is requested quite often and it was a pleasure to cover a device kept in such excellent condition. Really appreciate the opportunity!
When i saw that MTN sim, i knew this phone came from the mother land
I had a p990i and learnt so much about phones and modding with that. Just loved the phone with so many input methods
I couldn't stop staring at that headphone jack cover at 5:48 😂. My dad was a mechanical engineer for cell phones in the 90s so we have a bunch and all the rubber looks just like that. That small piece brought back so many memories
Salute to your father! I Loved the little headphone cover on my P910i! It was satisfying to use, and it protected the port from dust and moisture!
Sony Ericsson was way too awesome back then. I remember falling in love with their logo, their hardware, their unique UIs. So nostalgic!
My dad had one of these and I loved it
Mine too, and since then I really wanting to have one. But it was too expensive for me to have it that I might break it. When he retiring it, the phone is too old and there are better ones in the market, even though they are not touchscreen.
@KornKernel Man it is the nostalgia
It had a nice 3D golf game, no?
Used this for 2 years, loved it so much
Really loved these. I was too young to own one but I could see where Sony Ericsson were going and I also really liked it’s successor the P990 despite the issues it had with RAM management, it was quite clear that smartphones were the way to go, but the underlying software needed more refinement.

I have something for you....
when i was in college this was worlds coolest phone on market....only rich kids could afford it and everybodys dream phone i saved money almost 2 years to buy it but when i finally saved enough that was late because the phone get outdated.....sad story of my university time😁now i have iphone13promax but when i watch this video felt so excited like that good old days.....thanks alot sir
2.9 inch display?!? I thought the screen was huge and the time .
It always fascinated me that Symbian died, considering
, it was at one time omnipresent 🐼
Another great trip down memory lane. Outstanding work - as always.
Ah yes… i remember in high school my friend had a P800, at times i borrowed his just to browse the apps with the stylus, in which my Nokia didn’t have.
Phones were fun back then
man! You broght so mane memories back to me! I remember my beloved P910. It was the time of fun -and stylish- phones.
For those who wondered what that sleek, thin laptop featured at around 9:30 when talking about phones replacing laptops:
My best guess is that it's the Nexdock 360 (which is a laptop but without the computing bits)
Thank you MrMobileMichealFisher for your kind words and special gifts you gave me 😍😘💖💖💖
Defo one of my dream phones back in the day, when PDA phones simply oozed surrealism. was in high school when it first came out & was simply too damn broke to afford something so godlike back in the day. nevertheless, it was one of the reasons why i was so into phones & so enthused by new releases. a stark contrast to where i stand today when phones are concerned, as anything that're not foldables ain't even gonna pique my interest. it's a rather weird thing, coming to think about it. the dream of seeing smartphones becoming a reality was why i got so excited about phones back in the day, & that excitement was thoroughly snuffed out not long after the dream did become reality to the point where everyone was owning one.
Love that series, reminds me on good old days when switching phones felt something special :)

I have something for you..
The highs were higher, but the lows were also lower. Swings and roundabouts
I had the P800 and loved it.
The Jog wheel predates blackberry. It was a original Sony Mobile feature as seen on phones like the Sony CMD Z5 back in 2000.
Also, I can't believe you didn't show of how good the dock was. It would mirror your phones display to your PC and you could even use your PC as input to control the phone,
I'd always reply to friends SMS message with through my PC.
Sound recorder and call quality are two different things.
Makes you wonder if Apple really invented anything or they're a really good marketing company.
Apple doesn’t invent technology. They refine and implement it better
I LOVED the p80p and p900 and something we’ve lost is the JOY of the side wheel. Turn to scroll and press to click. Wonderful. I miss it.
I always wanted one of those phones when it was released. Too bad I couldn't afford it then. 😅
Same. I've been catching up getting the classic Sony phones (Xperia Play, XZ Premium, etc.) which I couldn't afford when I was younger

I have something for you....
No, forget about the Duo. This is a 'When Phones Were Fun' episode.
Still remember the day I bought my P800. Loved the optional keypad, although it had resistive "dimples" that pressed on the touchscreen to dial numbers. I think I removed it rather quickly. There was a great racing game for it that used the scrollwheel as a steering wheel.
We should blame Apple for their lousy ideas about removing accessories. Smartphone companies follow the trends.
My first smartphone was the SE M600i. It’s still my all time favourite phone. Bar none. UIQ was phenomenal.
I HAD THIS PHONE FOR YEARS AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH
I honestly like that you are doing these videos for the information and the fun of it.
This is one of my most nostalgic videos!
As a 44 year old dude this video took me back to the phone I had on my first trip to NYC
.. And suddenly I got super nostalgic. ☺️
I was a happy owner of the p800, p900 and then the P910. I loved it, at the time. It was so ahead of its time. Thank you for making this video.
I still have mines in the garage some where. I miss the days when phones were unique.
I owed this phone and loved it at the time. I remember people saying smartphones will never take off and look what we have today. People are saying the same about the duo now but I have a feeling flip, folding and duel screens will be. Big part of the future.
Thank you for this video. I owned both the P800 and P900. I loved the P900!
Best tech reviewer on UA-cam . Please give us more When phones were fun content!
Good times.
Been there! Destroyed so many psp's 😂
Love this show! Bring back old memories when phones were fun.
I've been a proud owner of P990 and P1. Man, I loved this series of phones.
