Everything u said especially the not enough sparring was spot on. It's easier to be a groundfighter cuz of fear and also lack of coordination. Thats why at the Shaolin Temple ur required to practice forms 2-4hrs day but they make u sparr just as long where u are required to incorporate the forms applications into the live sparring to show u've mastered the form and ur ready to advance but thats to hard for the average American so lets just "kickbox and groundfight" instead its more practical
I really aprceate you sharing the clip. Notice how nervous these guys are? And how they kinda loose their martial form in a actual fight? Not many are disiplin enough to maintain it but its great to watch those who can even when they loose.
"Fear" is a major issue in fighting nowadays. The reason why people who train in striking styles end up "grabbing" is because of "fear", you see it all the time. That is why fights are taken to the ground so much now, making it a requirement for UFC/MMA fighters to learn ground fighting.
meaning "EASIER". Seriously thats wat i've discovered over the years the word "practical" in terms of martial arts really means "easy". But keep in mind the first style of KF was Shuai Jiao aka wrestling. And it was used to train the Chinese military and the Shaolin, who victims to robberies enlisted the teachings of weapons and unarmed combat from the soldiers to defend themselves. At the time Shuai Jiao was the only unarmed combat so the Shaolin decided to create unarmed techniques based on
Also too much new age has been add it into the mix so now ppl see these systems as only for health! Up until the Republican period, in the Guoshu Academy, there were National Examinatons where candidates had to fight to prove their skill. Nowadays too many teachers get away with saying their art is too lethal to be used in combat!
Yeah, they seem nervous, you're right. Probably not the best fighters too. Not sure what you mean by martial form. The fact that they've gone far away from say form/taolu patterns is understandable :). I've just realized it looks like the floor is quite slippery. It may explain some things too..
"Fighters" generally don't fight enough to use what they practice efficiently. Many Kung Fu styles are highly effective, but most who practice them tend to forget or just simply don't know what to do in the situation of a real fight because a lot of them don't understand the nature of real fighting and everything that goes in it; time, space, and energy variations. Also, most fighters you ever see from the 1900's to now are very passive in terms of "moving forward" and "intercepting" the enemy
The sad thing is, when they do walk through the first step, "interception", they end up relying solely on instinct instead of what they've been trained in, resulting in a sloppy brawl. The timing is too fast and their bodys' aren't trained to react in that kind of situation, so they either end up "grabbing", "trading strikes", or "taking hits".
That is why people just learn what they think is practical; styles like thai boxing and ground fighting(ie. jujitsu) is the best choice for that purpose. Real fighting skill is starting to become extinct.
That is why I think that what we see in kung fu films nowadays really portray what real kung fu fighting was like back then, minus all the flying wire effects. Because I'm assuming fighters back then generally didn't grab that much at all, if not, grappling and ground fighting would be a major section in Kung Fu. People didn't stoop to grabbing.
weapons combat. Literally just swinging and striking the same way u wud with a weapon even though u arent armed at the time. So Pedro, u and Ryan are all right.
ThePedobrothers - your lack of actual insight or understanding of real fighting is crying to the heavens. Real bare-handed fighting has always gone to the ground - not because of fear, but because proper striking will knock your opponent to the floor - where you can finish him using ground tactics - ground£ or submission. The reason most asian martial-arts focus on stand-up fighting is the fact they were developed from weapon-systems.
In my truest and honest opinion, I dont think a real fighter should have to fight on the ground. Ground fighting is popular now because stand up fighting especially Kung Fu in general is too complicated and requires way too much skills for the modern person. To achieve that ability is just too hard for the modern person, not because we are born weaker, but because of our modern societies in which we live in.
I disagree, to ay that "real" KF is what you see in the movies is non sense. The reason nowadays pppl who train KF dont know how to fight is becase they dont do it. Too much horse stance, forms and little applications and what is most important free sparring.

It's raining and the stage was very slippery. But this shouldn't be the excuse.
