This method is way safer (non toxic versus carcinogenic) but more difficult to use. Currently I would not recommend sealants such as MSC to anyone anymore because of health concerns. I simply do not find it worth the risk.
- Yes you still want to wear a mask and take all the usual precautions as you normally would. It is still a chemical so you want to avoid breathing it in or getting it into your eyes. - Some people have been using a brush only to apply the sealant. I would recommend checking DoA in the customisation part of the forum and read about their experience.
Liquitex actually does sell this as a spray. It's called Liquitex Professional Spray Varnish. It comes in both gloss and matte, so be careful which one you get.
I used this method with my airbrush and I must say I am hooked! at first it was getting a little drippy, but after playing with my airbrush settings a little bit, I got it down perfect, thanks for showing us this, it is truly so much better, even with a respirator, I swear, I could feel MSC in my lungs! this way is so much nicer!
From what people wrote after trying spray bottles and the special ones used for spraying oil, it splatters the sealant too much. The mist has to be light and fine, if the head gets obvious sealant droplets it is not good. But then again it could be an issue of the type of spray bottles those people used. It would be great if people didnt need to buy an airbrush+compressor so I hope they will keep trying different options to make this work :)
I never realized just how dangerous other popular sealants are. If that thing with the spray bottle/olive oil bottle works, you bet I'll be using this method of yours. Thank you so much for the information C:
In terms of it being waterproof, I tried rubbing it with water and it was just fine. I couldnt notice any difference between MSC and Liquitex. Yeah I know what you mean, this is why at the very end I airbrushed the whole faceup with the non diluted varnish to make sure everything is sealed properly :)
@@kumariniharika2224 Yes! It is much better since it isn't toxic, you could eat a small amount and all that can happen is that your stomach can hurt a bit,at least that is what they say on their website.
This video is so helpful! Aside from health concerns, I've heard MSC also does not work well in humid weather. Where I live it's always humid so there's just no use. I do own brush-on sealants, but I never thought to use them with an airbrush. I've found that brushing on liquid sealant (even when not cut with water) will make the watercolor pencils run, and the style I like is extremely hard to achieve with an entirely paint faceup. Thank you so much for this!
you are my savior! My doll's left eyelashes suddenly disappeared (it came out when I was changing her) and I couldnt find it. And watching this, I am so thankful! You are awesome!
You will need a half-face respirator that protects against organic vapours and has a N95 filter. I highly recommend checking the DoA thread called "What you need to know about respiratory protection" for more detailed info regarding brands and types of respirators.
I love your work, I have taught airbrush for several years. I have used acrylics (non-toxic only), and I noticed the water to medium ratio has to be right in order for the paint to flow properly. If it is too thick, the texture will become rough. Remember you are building layers, dusting coats, and fine mists will work perfectly...
Wow.... You're amazing! Thank you so much for giving all this info, I'm just starting out with my face ups and your videos have been such a great help!
This seems like it would be so expensive to buy or start as a hobby. I love the artistry of this! I would love one and I would enjoy making one but that a lot of money either way.
Those are all commissions from my clients. I am a faceup artists so all the dolls you see in my videos have been sent to me for customisation purposes by the original owner.
Thank you so much for finding safer alternatives to Mr. Super Clear! I've been sad because I've been wanting to do faceups, but even with a mask I seem to end up coughing after Mr. Super Clear. It just doesn't' feel safe to me. :(
Creative way of using brush on sealents and airbrushes! But I kinda thought u were actually going to use a brush and apply the sealent on the face by hand, would there be any effects in doing it that way since I don't have an airbrush? I want to start doing faceups soon, and I thought maybe brush-on sealents would be ok.
+Maverynthia I think she meant more like the sealant is for the brushes but she's trying it with her airbrush. that or because an airbrush does have the word brush in it. so technically it is a brush on sealant. 😅
i don't think you can actually brush on any sealant without smudging the colors though xept for gloss since its a thick layer lol. maybe the first layer but you might get brushtexture and hair stuck in it and it would be uneven so i don't think it'd be a good idea.
This makes sense to use it in an airbrush once watered down! I was confused how brush on works because if you brush it on that would just remove soft powders
This popped up on my tumblr dashboard and I just have to say it was wonderful watching you work. The faceup looks amazing. I wish I had the resources to learn to paint as wonderfully as you do. Thank you for sharing and if I ever get to learn, I will definitely come back to this video as a reference point :)
Nicolle, It was nice to hear your voice in your newer video's. I have been following your face up videos for a time now. I refurbish and repaint vintage Barbie dolls. I was able to pick up on the materials that you use and bought things accordingly...thank you for that! :-) But...I have dabbled in BJD's as I love to paint and to draw and work on doll's faces. Nicolle, do you have a Facebook page? Also..I was wondering what type of airbrush (and mask, for that matter) do you use (the model, the brand and the price.) If I do purchase one I would rather get a good one that I can use for a time, kwim? I wonder if there is a format for us to share some pics...I would love to share with you some pics of Barbie dolls that I have refurbished. I sew clothes and restyle/redo their hair as needed. You are a JOY to watch (work!!!) Thank you so much. P.S. I am like a 'Grandma' at 57 years of age but I still 'play' with dolls! ;-D It's nice to meet others that do, too. :-) Blessings to you Nicolle! :-)
lovely work as always. I'd really like to see the durability of a face-up done using this method of sealing tested over a period of months before calling this a good new option as sealant, especially since you had to dilute the matte medium for it to work through the airbrush so I'd wonder if that changed the durability at all.
kinda depends on what you want to do with it. "iwata" is great but quite expensive. if you want to make very thin lines and sections like for tattoos and scars you might want to consider harder & steenbeck's "infinity". just make sure its a "double action" airbrush.
That is a good idea! :O it would be interesting seeing if it worked with one of those small plastic spray bottles. If you end up trying it out, let me know how it goes :D
That sounds a great idea... I'm out to get some of the liquitex sealant tomorrow ( if I can find it ) and I'll see if I can give it a go. Will come back with the results!
Okay, I purchased a Derwent Spritzer bottle and used the same Liquitex fluid and water mixture. The method does work, it just takes care and experimentation. I found that the droplets from the spritzer were 'heavier' than those from an airbrush, so I sprayed from a good distance, with only one or two pumps. I did then very very gently use a tiny brush to brush over the droplets, otherwise they just sat on the plastic as little drops. As long as you're careful you shouldn't have an issue :)
Steven rawr Aww, really sorry to hear that :( it worked fine for me. Maybe try again but experiment with leaving each layer of sealer longer to dry, or doing more layers or something. I'm sorry I can't help you out more!
+Wolf Rhapsodos Did you have to wear any lung protection like respirators or masks? I just wanted to make sure since I don't want to breath in chemicals in the sealant. Thanks! :)
You need the compressor to supply the air to the airbrush. The airbrush alone cannot do anything on its own. It is like buying a digital camera without the battery.
i will use this , here in Mexico ( in the little town where i live) it's almost imposible to get a spray sealant and liquitex matte fluid its a great alternative if you have an air brush ( which i happen to have ... i don't have a compresor but i have cans which they sell at walmart and can be attach to be able to use the air brush) also its a great invertion you use so little and the smallest bottle of liquitex ( here in my country ) is of 16 oz so it will last a loooong way , so yeah i will follow your steps Andreja and i will buy a bottle of liquitex matte / ultra matte medium fluid :)
how long does your bottle last? I'm considering investing in this because I can't afford a new can of MSC every 2/3 face-ups and this seems to last much longer..
you know, you can get pencil extenders, which you put the pencil stub into to get a better grip. they really help. they have them in the drawing section at craft stores.
Have you tried different brands with the medium because if not you may want to check brand called Golden. They have medium that is made for airbrush and that you could use without diluting it. Not a lot of people seem to know it but adding a lot of water on any of the acrylics weakens it's ability to bind with the surface and it may end up causing trouble with time. Also different brands gives you different texture so it may end up helping you also with the extra rough texture the liquitex seems to give you. Your face ups are really amazing, thank you for sharing those.
Nicolle's Dreams Now you got me curious with where did you find that information? I have tried to find information from the toxicity with the acrylics because of my I have health issues around chemicals and I thought it was equal with Liquitex with mediums. I know they have couple paints that has the warning label and they also say that those should not be airbrushed because of it but other than that they should be equal. They do say to use NIOS mask because of the mist is not healthy to breath in but that goes with Liquitex too since they both are plastic and not very good for the lungs.
I do not have any way to test the UV protection that the Liquitex sealant offers without spending a nice chunk of money on resin parts and sacrifice them to the sun. On a side note I used the MSC that has UVcut and the one that doesnt, on two of my dolls and I have not noticed any difference between the two after a full year. So who knows...
This is amazing, I don't like the MSC type sprays as they are so dangerous. But I never knew there was a safe option like this! I was wondering I saw some people mention the aerosol type bottles you can use as I can't afford a fancy airbrush like yours just yet. Any idea what they look like/where you can find them? Thank you for this! I will be trying this VERY soon!
I'm not sure where we got ours to be honest, and I live in the US. If it isnt too expensive for you you may be able to order one online. I've looked on amazon with the search terms 'olive oil pump sprayer' and it turned up quite a few results! Most of them seem to be no cheaper than 9.95 USD
Interesting choice. I don't have the money or time to get the famous sealants everyone uses, so I went into my local art store and found a matte sealant in spray. At first while using it I realize it left white sand-like particles all over the place, so I stopped using it. I tried to use it again recently, and realized that not only those white thingies disappear in a few hours, but the sealant is eco-friendly, which means is not that toxic. Still, if anytime I have the money and time, I would love to try this technique.
I have a question, I tried this method today but the heads gets a bit shiny, they are not matte like when I use MSC, can it be that I put too much distilled water on the mix? In the video you seem to be airburhushing the head a lot, so I don't think I'm over doing it... >.
I know you can't answer every question you get but hopefully you see this one. What kind of airbrush do you use? I've never used one before and I can't seem to get a good read on what's best for repainting, or in this case applying sealant. Is it gravity feed, dual action, internal mix or siphon feed?
Airbrushes are expensive, but if someone is going to be doing a lot of faceups it's not a bad investment for your health! Thanks so much for sharing this, MSC is the one downfall for me with faceups. I mean yes, pastel dust isn't good for you either but the MSC is so toxic, makes me want to do less of them.
You say it is rough and I know you gave examples, but I am not sure off the top of my head the difference in the feel of those papers. So would you say it is so rough it feels bad or just more rough compared to other sealants?
I don't know if the question has been posed or not, but... Which would you suggest for someone new to faceups? I don't have an airbrush, but someone suggested the spray bottle, which I'd be willing to try. But is it safer/easier to just use the stuff in the spray for someone who is still learning this sort of thing?
Alright. Maybe I'll try using the diluted medium in a spray bottle, then? You can test sealants and things on the headcap, correct? I figure it should be worth a shot. Liquitex is a lot easier for me to get my hands on.
I tried it on a tan Lati Lea (see my latest video). I will be getting more tan dolls this month and will keep testing it out but so far it works wonderfully.
What if..not owning an airbrush, you were to put the sealant into a small aerosol can or some sort of spray can you can use instead of an airbrush for sealing? Another stupid question x)
I am afraid that using a brush would smear the paint (especially pastels and shimmer). I tried applying the liquid with a brush on the headcap of one of my dolls and you could see the brush strokes which wasnt very nice.
Hi again Andreja! I started to use liquitex for my customizations, but it's sold out in my country, I want to try the Golden Acrylic Matte Medium, do you think it will work fine too?
Hello! :) I know that you have already stated that you use craft glue for putting in the eyelashes, but have you told us what type? I am sorry if you have answered this--I have watched all of your videos but I may have missed that part. Thank you!
I may try this instead. I just got a Luts Senior Delf Niya in recently and I would like to get her blushed but I need a sealant. I don't want anything too toxic (if at all) because I'm sensitive to such things and it would be difficult for me to wear a mask or respirator. Already is with COVID.
Sorry to stalk this video so much with questions. Seems like you're the only youtuber using airbrush sealants rather than MSC. What do you use to clean your airbrush after using varnishes? Do you have a cleaning routine that you could share? i'd love to see that!
Do you still need to wear a respiratory mask for the non toxic sealants? Also do you have to airbrush it? Can't you put the sealant on with a brush? ;-;
What brand/model airbrush are you using anyway? Would you have any suggestions to a good one that could work for either the sealing work or the gouache work?
They have these bottles for Olive Oil that you can buy that turns it into a spray similar to the aerisol looking cans of cooking spray, I wonder if it would be suitable for DaniDollfie's suggestion? Basically you pump the can before spraying.. They come without olive oil so you wouildnt have to worry about cleaning it out.
Cap'n Valentine If you see the first ones, she's already REALLY good at it. She's a professional ilustrator so she had past experience and doing face-ups its like drawing but on a doll face. If you have 0 experience in drawing or things like this, it would take you MUCH longer than to someone who had experience.
Ashura Sarin all my friends say I'm like a professional at drawing which I kinda am not trying to brag... But I'm really good at dolls now and I'm selling them so it's interesting!😀
I bought two different bottles for olive oil today and tried it, the spray doesn't seem as light and misty as an aerosol bottle or airbrush, but I'm going to try to thin the sealant a little with water or something else and see how it goes. I really wish this would work!
Yes ♥ M ♥ when something is labeled as "non toxic" it doesn't mean that it is good to inhale or ingest it. So play safe and make sure you use adequate protection, it is really not worth any long term consequences :) Gloves, respirators and eye protection can be bought with money, but health once it is messed up can be much more hard and expensive to recover.
I'm considering purchasing MSC, but obviously, I'm not going to use it unmasked. Do you know if there is specific kind of respirator that would be best? What kind do you use?
Once upon a time, I was testing the liquitex sealant on the head cap of my floating head, and it came out perfect. However, when I did the face up, I made the layers too thick, so it looks very shiny and textured. I'm determined to get it right! I can't afford an airbrush, so I can only use normal paint brushes and makeup sponges. I also need the varnish to create a hard top coat...
Your work is incredible 😍😍😍 I've been watching a lot of face up and repainting videos, and you are amazing! Do you sell a step by step tutorial on how to do face-ups?
I tried this sealant on a monster high doll and a barbie. But even after a few days the skin feels a bit "sticky" and when I wanted to paint with a watercolor pencil it didn't work well. Any idea what went wrong? (Sorry, my English is not perfect, I'm from Germany)
Thank you for the fast answer :-) So you don´t think it could be because the dolls head is vinyl and not resin? Tried it on resin and it worked fine :-) Well, but it was an other temperature and humidity that day. ;-)
Maysi - Art I agree with sage-acris about the varnish needing to be diluted. I had the same problem and it was not diluted enough and I put on too thick. The weather was also very humid.
I know it sounds like a stupid question but I do not own an airbrush... do you think doing it with a soft brush and diluted would achieve the same effect?
Hey there. I have two questions. 1) could I use a normal spray bottle to apply this to the doll's face. 2) Is it safe to spray this sealant inside, I know it is non-toxic but I'd rather be safe then sorry. Thanks
with the watercolor pencil do you dampen it before you apply it to the face? I have to do my face this will be my third try. I do air brush work on motorcycle and I am very skilled with drawing with pastel and at painting this is knew to me and I am looking for help in learning to do face ups not for money just so I can do my own dolls faces.
If I understand correctly you live in Australia yes? I was wondering where you got your liquitex prodcuts, I've been searching and searching but I havent been able to find a place that stocks them! Thank you!
This method is way safer (non toxic versus carcinogenic) but more difficult to use. Currently I would not recommend sealants such as MSC to anyone anymore because of health concerns. I simply do not find it worth the risk.
No liquitex doesn’t have any toxic fumes
- Yes you still want to wear a mask and take all the usual precautions as you normally would. It is still a chemical so you want to avoid breathing it in or getting it into your eyes.
- Some people have been using a brush only to apply the sealant. I would recommend checking DoA in the customisation part of the forum and read about their experience.
Liquitex actually does sell this as a spray. It's called Liquitex Professional Spray Varnish. It comes in both gloss and matte, so be careful which one you get.
thank you so much for telling us about this. I was worried about having to get an air brush because I rarely use them because I have terrible aim xD
Wow.... and i went and bought an airbrush solely for this purpose!! :D I'm in pain!! :D
GFDI OTL me too! I literally just bought an airbrush machine yesterday for this soul purpose T^T
*pats your back* I thought i was the only one lol!! At least you'll have the airbrush if your local art store doesn't have the spray like mine...
I just bought the spray, and I could find no information about doll customizing using it... I hope it works...

Could you go over airbrushes (where to buy/techniques)?
Yeah that would be awesome!

Elena A. I know that Hobby Lobby sells them
one question, is those sealants you're using strong? i mean if you put your doll in water it wont wash away?
It shouldn't wash away,on the website it says it's waterproof
That is a good idea! :O it would be interesting seeing if it worked with one of those small plastic spray bottles. If you end up trying it out, let me know how it goes :D
Joelle, I asked this question the other day and she said to use the watercolor pencils dry.
Can I have a step by step on what you used when and how, please? I got confused half way through it! 🤣
hey this is pokori and omg you make my heart stop everytime....can I just say I love you so much
does anyone know if you can put the mixture into a spray bottle to spray it on the doll instead of an airbrush

you do such amazing work, I always enjoy watching your videos and thanks for experimenting with brush on sealants I've been curious about them
wow thats amazing! What a beautiful face. Would love to see her completely finished with body etc. Thanks for sharing. Hugs Ali
Thank you for watching :)

Your face ups are really amazing, thank you for sharing those.
Yes I know about Golden but my aim was to find a non toxic alternative, that is why Golden did not make the cut.
Nicolle's Dreams Now you got me curious with where did you find that information? On a side note I used the MSC that has UVcut and the one that doesnt, on two of my dolls and I have not noticed any difference between the two after a full year. So who knows...
I always get excited when you upload a new video! Beautiful work as always! What model of doll is this? I absolutely love it!
Can you please tell what spray it is?
Enon Z Matedart.
Did you use an airbrush or spray directly onto the head?
*****
No, the sealant on its own.
I do not use pastels with the airbrush. I do however have separate airbrushes for the sealant and gouache :)
She made a questions video about that. Link is in her description 😊
What is the sealant to water ratio that you use?
Airbrushes are expensive, but if someone is going to be doing a lot of faceups it's not a bad investment for your health! Thanks so much for sharing this, MSC is the one downfall for me with faceups. I mean yes, pastel dust isn't good for you either but the MSC is so toxic, makes me want to do less of them.
Your work always puts a smile on my face. ^__^
Hi,would you like to tell me the brand of distilled water which you used to mix with Liquitex Matte Medium. Thanks very much!!
I love your skills. I absolutely adore your videos too. Thanks so much. :)
I like this video cause I want to start repainting dolls but I want to have a non toxic alternative while removing and start draw😊
I was wondering if the matte varnish is also watered down, I know the medium is, but what about the varnish?
She said in the last part of the video that one of the pros of the varnish was that it didn't need to be watered down.
Ah, thank you! :D Must have missed that part oTL
Yay! I've been waiting for a video like this for a while now, thank you!
You say it is rough and I know you gave examples, but I am not sure off the top of my head the difference in the feel of those papers. So would you say it is so rough it feels bad or just more rough compared to other sealants?
Will matte finish spray paint work as well
I don't know if the question has been posed or not, but... Which would you suggest for someone new to faceups? I don't have an airbrush, but someone suggested the spray bottle, which I'd be willing to try. But is it safer/easier to just use the stuff in the spray for someone who is still learning this sort of thing?
What do you use to make the airbrush reddish on the dolls eyes?
I'm so glad that this is working out for you! And hoping that you're doing better as well :)
Alright. Maybe I'll try using the diluted medium in a spray bottle, then? You can test sealants and things on the headcap, correct? I figure it should be worth a shot. Liquitex is a lot easier for me to get my hands on.
Hi Andreja, can you explain why we need the compressor as well and not just the airbrush?
I tried it on a tan Lati Lea (see my latest video). I will be getting more tan dolls this month and will keep testing it out but so far it works wonderfully.
Do you have any videos of you doing a close up on how to do the eyebrows
Can you put this in a spray bottle and have the same or a very similar effect? Sorry if it's a stupid question.
When putting the coating on, what consists a good even coat? Should the head be damp or lightly moist?
Could you just paint it on or do you have to distill it then paint it, or does it need to be airbrushed on? Sorry for so many questions.
Very beautiful work!
Hello! :) I know that you have already stated that you use craft glue for putting in the eyelashes, but have you told us what type? I am sorry if you have answered this--I have watched all of your videos but I may have missed that part. Thank you!
Thank you for replying I wish I could find a method to spray it on. I di not own an airbrush and getting set up for one will cost a lot I am sure.
Do you still need to wear a respiratory mask for the non toxic sealants? Also do you have to airbrush it? Can't you put the sealant on with a brush? ;-;
It is written in the lower third at the exact same time > "Here I am mixing Liquitex Matte Medium with distilled water"
Lol all I see is pro people that make beautiful dolls while I'm just a beginner!😬
oo she's been doing this for years, practice and you'll get better C:
Cap'n Valentine If you see the first ones, she's already REALLY good at it. She's a professional ilustrator so she had past experience and doing face-ups its like drawing but on a doll face. If you have 0 experience in drawing or things like this, it would take you MUCH longer than to someone who had experience.
Ashura Sarin all my friends say I'm like a professional at drawing which I kinda am not trying to brag...
But I'm really good at dolls now and I'm selling them so it's interesting!😀
FLUFFY PANDAS That's wonderful to hear :) Congrats
It is fortunate and blissful to start a project and strive to learn more! You being eager to learn is a great start for any project!
I bought two different bottles for olive oil today and tried it, the spray doesn't seem as light and misty as an aerosol bottle or airbrush, but I'm going to try to thin the sealant a little with water or something else and see how it goes. I really wish this would work!
Im still confused about everything. Please can you do a video showing every step you do like if wear your respatory mask when you spray sealant
+Yukiemrah Key yes you always wear respiratory/eye/skin protection
Nicolle's Dreams ok thank you
Yes ♥ M ♥ when something is labeled as "non toxic" it doesn't mean that it is good to inhale or ingest it.
What kind do you use?
she answers that in her faq i believe
Once upon a time, I was testing the liquitex sealant on the head cap of my floating head, and it came out perfect. However, when I did the face up, I made the layers too thick, so it looks very shiny and textured. I'm determined to get it right! I can't afford an airbrush, so I can only use normal paint brushes and makeup sponges. I also need the varnish to create a hard top coat...
Are you using the portable type of air brush? like the ones used in make ups? THanks!
Is it necessary to put on a sealant? And is there any other way to achieve that delicate shading without an airbrush?
I love your videos! i am just starting to get into this! :) Your work is amazing!
Your work is incredible 😍😍😍
I've been watching a lot of face up and repainting videos, and you are amazing!
There could be many reasons, you might have applied it too thick, or maybe the temperature was too low or the humidity levels too high.
Thank you for the fast answer :-)
So you don´t think it could be because the dolls head is vinyl and not resin?
Tried it on resin and it worked fine :-) Well, but it was an other temperature and humidity that day. ;-)
Nicolle's Dreams how many days Take to finish one doll? I didn't found this answer On FAQ
Did you dilute it? It could be too thick.
Hi. What did you use to stick the eyelashes?
Beautiful, what brand of air brushing compressor do you use?
Was the glue that you put on the eyelashes to hold the eyes?
What s in that red bootle? You put that in the liquitex. Is it water?
can you do this was a spray bottle or paint brush? also do you need to wear a mask?
Thank you!
I like the buffer stick where can i get one Thankyou for a great alternative sealant video x
it looks Amazing, like always !
how much does it take you to do 1 doll ? (like put color on it)
