    Thanks again, man - I don't get to sit down behind the kit as much as I would like, but keeping your concepts ( and approach) in mind ( and internalizing them "practicing within when without" and "air drumming") I've noticed a marked improvement in my ability, fluidity, and musicality every time I play. Just through the influence of your vids, I think I've naturally gravitated toward a lead musical hand approach 🤘💥🥁

      @@cedricjones9679 focus on playing on beat over playing fast. If you have to play a song at a slower tempo than the recording, then do that. For a beginner kit, the minimum you need is a hi-hat, a snare, kick drum, and a crash. If you can afford more then shop the style of kit for the kind of music you want to play. Jazz kits, rock kits, etc.

    I just watched my latest wedding gig on video. Wasn’t too happy of some of my fills. They were too clumsy sometimes. Then I thought to check, if uncle-Rob has any video for this topic… and BUM, here it is. Right on time! Thanks man! 😎👌

    The reason I don't wear any drum related clothes is - even though I started drumming in 1995 I don't consider myself a drummer. I can play my kit and play along to pretty tough /fast songs but I would never count myself amongst people like Thomas Lang for instance. I'll always be a beginner.

      I see lots of people wearing their favorite sports hero's numbers, and none of them are Tom Brady or that other guy.... whomever. Don't be so hard on yourself. I got my first kit in the late 60's. I'm no Danny Seraphine - never will be, I'm just me and glad I can play. What I have learned is that I learn from others, and become myself. Wear it, proudly.

    Serious question. Is is ok to bury the stick to the snare when you play trad grip? I was always taught to hit and release (bounce), but I don't play trad grip.

    • @MrMiau2
      @MrMiau2 2 роки тому

      Try both ways and you'll see that they both sound very differently. Burying gives you a choked sound while bouncing sounds more open (This isn't exclusive to traditional. Same thing happens with matched grip). There really is no 'correct' way to play anything. Just different sounds and different possibilities for musical application. (Although burying might put a little bit more strain on your wrist so just choose whatever is more comfortable to you)

    • @RobBeatdownBrown
      @RobBeatdownBrown  2 роки тому

      My left stick is always naturally dancing between backbeats when I use either grip, but burying is feels real good too if I’m just laying down a straight 4. There’s no real “wrong” way to do it as long as it sounds good

  • @jaygee8566
    @jaygee8566 2 роки тому

    This is a microcosm of why open-handed playing may not be the panacea that it's often assumed to be: The benefits of open handed playing come with the tradeoff that the lead hand is more constrained when it comes to orchestrating fills. The right hand is better positioned to move around the kit than the left (vice-versa on a left-handed kit). It's not an irreparable roadblock, but for a closed-handed drummer this lesson is the natural evolutionary step. Prior to this step, fills are more generic and strict, while the next step is to become more rudimental and creative. An open-handed drummer is mostly missing this middle step and many get stuck at this point, unable to bridge the gap.

    • @mcspankey4810
      @mcspankey4810 2 роки тому

      I’m an open handed drummer, any advice to over come this ?

    • @jaygee8566
      @jaygee8566 2 роки тому +1

      @@mcspankey4810 Advice will depend on where you're at, but if you don't already, placing a floor tom in the "side snare position" can help give your lead hand more utility.
      Besides that, I think it's best to buckle down and put a lot of effort on fills and rudiments, patterns like LRK, LRRK, LRLRRK, etc., and of course your singles and doubles. Start very slow on the snare, then move the weak hand between the floor tom and snare, and finally both hands around the kit. Focus on mastering one or two things at a time. You want to be equally comfortable ending fills with your weak and strong hands. A good exercise for this is something I call "ParaXDiddleXs," where you play an arbitrary number of paras and diddles (eg. mixture of paradiddles, triple-paradiddles, double-paradiddle-diddle-diddles, etc.) on the snare drum to a click, moving random-ish accents (typically the first "par-") onto the cymbals. Aim to play around half your accents with your weak hand. You're also going to learn the inverted versions this way, and you'll be going over the barline a fair amount. Playing odd time signatures will do wonders to your ability to find the one, and a good exercise is to turn some odd time signature song into one big fill. Rob has a video on "gospel chops" which is a good demonstration of approximately where you should be when you reach the other side.
