  • Episode 76: Dr. Robert Shapiro talks to Dr. Lindsay Weitzel about the stigma and workplace discrimination experienced by people with migraine and other headache disorders.
Do you know what the "legitimacy deficit" is in reference to migraine? Have you heard people in the migraine community discuss how important "coming out" about their migraine disease has been to their "self-advocacy"?
Hear Dr. Shapiro discuss this terminology and where we can go to feel supported when telling people at our workplace about our headache or migraine disorder. You can read Dr. Shapiro's article here: bit.ly/3k62DOL

Great information presented here. I am also a chronic migraine sufferer and I am working on researching workplace stigma faced by migraine warriors for my PhD dissertation. Thank you for taking the time to put this podcast together.

Thank you for this podcast! I am suffering from migraine and autoimmune and feel and have experienced all of this, the stigma, the discrimination, the judgement from loved ones even, AND the self-stigma (pushing through). I was discriminated against and forced to resign from my job in STATE GOVERNMENT even though I was assigned to special projects, stayed to make up time, had FMLA, etc. We all need to do better to accommodate people with disabilities and enforce the protection laws we already have. I could have kept working, but now I'm not. I was denied telecommuting after COVID. How? Because they could. And after years of fighting discrimination, my health got worse and now I can't work. I'm no longer ashamed, it's on them, not me.

Thank you so much Dr Weitze, I know exactly how you felt! People at work became impatient with me, as I am usually fatigued from pain killers due to migraines. Removing gluten (gliadin) and strangely corn and rice too, has really pulled the handbrake on both the severity and frequency of my migraines..
